2019 Challenge Series and Awards

Welcome to the 2019 Official Challenge Series!

This is a fun and friendly competition based on the official challenges for 2019. Everyone is encouraged to participate as much (or as little) as they wish. We'll have an overall challenge competition for this year, as well as several awards you can earn along the way based on your participation in challenges. The overarching goal of this is to have fun and encourage everyone to expand their film knowledge by participating in the various country/genre/theme challenges.

There are a few changes from last year (details below). The first major change is to eliminate some of the redundant awards (e.g., Dabbler, Winners). The second major change is to have two levels of goals for a few of these - one lower-threshold goal (achievable at ~1.25 film/day pace) and one upper-threshold goal (achievable at ~3.5 film/day pace); for example, the Obsessed Much Award will have the lower threshold at 36 and the upper threshold at 100. If you have questions on the awards, just ask. Discussion thread.

How Does It Work?

Very simply, earn points by participating in challenges. Points are based on your rank for the challenge, and totaled across all challenges you've participated in. (Full details of the scoring can be found in the Official Challenges Leaderboard.) In addition, there will be various awards you can earn along the way for achieving certain milestones. Other advice:
  • Record your watches that fit each challenge, even if it's only 1 or 2
  • Scoring tends to reward breadth; 5 watches each in 3 challenges tends to be better than 15 watches in a single challenge
  • Pay attention to films that count for multiple challenges
  • Most importantly, HAVE FUN!
Awards

Yes - there will be awards! Awards are based on participation in the challenges this year and achieving various milestones along the way. Just keep participating in challenges, and it's likely you'll earn quite a few of these along the way. Here are the awards:
  • Participation (AKA the "Christopher Lee") Award: How many challenges did you participate in*? Awarded in six levels, for participating in 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, and 36 challenges. *Lower threshold: 1 film/challenge counts as participation (same as 2018). Upper threshold: 5 films/challenge counts as participation.
  • X/X (AKA the "Beautiful Mind") Award: Awarded for watching X movies in X official challenges. There are 36 potential levels with this badge. Every challenge participant will earn at least the 1/1 level. But if you want to earn the highest level, you'd have to watch at least 36 movies in all 36 official challenges. No thresholds for this award.
  • Top 5 Performance (AKA the "Oscar Nominees") Award: For placing in the top 5 of a challenge. Level up each time you achieve this (Max 36). No thresholds for this award.
  • Obsessed Much? (AKA the "Adrian Monk") Award: For reaching the given threshold in a challenge. Level up each time you exceed the threshold (Max 36). Lower threshold: 36 watches in a single challenge. Upper threshold: 100 watches in a single challenge.
  • 300/1066 (AKA "Gerard Butler Yells A Lot"/"William the Conqueror") Award: Awarded once for reaching 300 total watches (lower threshold) or 1066 total watches (upper threshold) across all official challenges.
  • Nerdy Stats (AKA "Idiocracy") Awards: These are going to be a series of awards based on the three challenges combined each month, including top combined performance across all three challenges, bottom combined performance across all three challenges (contingent on participation in all three), and the central tendency trio of mean, median, and modal performance across the three official challenges.
  • Triple/Double (AKA "Space Jam") Awards: Watch the most triples in a month? Award. Most doubles in a month? Another award. Level up to 12. Note: This is an "opt-in" award/challenge - to qualify, you must post your doubles and triples in The Triple Challenge - 2019 thread. No thresholds on this one.

I like the idea of tracking the top combined performance across all three challenges in a month.

Bravo for doing this and congratulations on the 2018 series. It adds so much to the various challenges!
That's all, folks!

Credit for that idea goes to frbrown.

But thanks for the kudos!

Thanks for taking the time and doing this again. I really enjoyed skimming through last year's thread.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Once again you've made these fresh and interesting. I like the changes you are incorporating. It's like a tractor beam trying to pull me off my stated course. But I will resist getting sucked in despite that. Resist. resist...

FYI: OP updated with a new award for Triples/Doubles.

I'm pulling data for that award from albajos' The Triple Challenge - 2019 thread. So if you want to qualify for that award, be sure to post your doubles/triples there. I'm quite sure it's retroactive to the beginning of this month, so get on it!

2019's X/X Awards

Image

This award is for those people who have watched X movies for X official challenges. The first level is easy to obtain - every challenge participant will have watched at least 1 film for 1 official challenge. But each subsequent level is harder to achieve - Level Two is 2 films in each of 2 official challenges, Level Three is 3 films in each of 3 official challenges, Level Ten is 10 films watched in each of 10 official challenges, and so on.

This is my personal favorite award. It's hard to achieve some of those higher levels, and it's only going to get more interesting as the year goes on. Level 3 is currently the maximum possible award, and 15 people have achieved that. Here is a list of everyone with an award promotion this month:

Level 3 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 3 films in each of 3 official challenges: albajos, cinephage, clemmetarey, flavo5000, funkybusiness, hurluberlu, jdidaco, jeroeno, Knaldskalle, maxwelldeux, nimimerkillinen, OldAle1, RogerTheMovieManiac88, sebby, sol, weirdboy

Level 2 - Congrats to all the participants who have watched at least 2 films in each of 2 official challenges: 3eyes, allisoncm, blocho, Coryn, Eva_L, Mate_cosido, ororama, vortexsurfer, zzzorf

Level 1 - Congrats to all the new participants who have watched at least 1 film for an official challenge: 45MinuteZoom, blueboybob, ChrisReynolds, connordenney, Daviddoes, frbrown, Hunziker, India Istanbul, jvv, klaus78, Lilarcor, Lonewolf2003, mightysparks, Mochard, morrison-dylan-fan, peeptoad, psychotronicbeatnik, RBG, sheikofhyrule, shugs, Simba63, St. Gloede, tourdesb, Traveller, VincentPrice, ZombieCPA

2019 Oscar Nominees*

Image

*I mean, not really - it's just a title. Please don't sue me.

This award is for finishing in the Top 5 of one of the official challenges. Level up for each Top 5 finish this year.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, jeroeno was the only one to sweep nominations in all three categories. Congrats to everyone with a Top 5 finish this month! Here is everyone and their respective levels they've earned:

Level 3 - jeroeno

Level 2 - albajos, jdidaco, sol

Level 1 - flavo5000, Knaldskalle, psychotronicbeatnik, St. Gloede, tourdesb, Traveller, weirdboy

2019's 300 Awards

Image

This award is for those who have tallied 300 total watches across all official challenges. That's 25 watches/month, with three challenges each month. And with strategic film choices that count for multiple challenges, the number of films required to reach this milestone can be greatly reduced.

After January, we had no one crest the "300 watch" threshold. Congratulations to nobody.

Which is probably a good thing as it would be almost 35 points every day

(And as far I know, we have only done 300 points in a month 3 times in 7 years)

I picked a number near 1000, as that was a decently high bar last year, which should be even more challenging this year with fewer triples possible. 1066 specifically because it amused me, seemed a nice complement to the "300/Battle of Thermopylae" number, and lent itself to William the Conqueror as a name.

TL;DR: Fun for me.

2019's Obsessed Much? Awards

Image

This threshold is for those slightly obsessive people who managed to watch 36 films for a single challenge, pacing over 1 film/day.

We had 21 slightly obsessed individuals in January - two people, jeroeno and sol, managed to do it in all three challenges, starting the year off at Level 3! albajos was also able to accomplish this in two different challenges, starting out at Level 2. Eighteen others start the year off at Level 1. Here is everyone who leveled up this month:

This is a series of five awards based on cross-challenge challenge performance each month. The Top and Bottom awards can be leveled up to 12, while the measures of central tendency could (in theory) be leveled up to 36.

Top Combined Performance

Add up the number of watches from all three challenges, figure out who had the biggest number, and you have the winner of this award. So who was it this month? albajos, with 280 combined points. :worship:
Bottom Combined Performance

Add up the number of watches from all three challenges, figure out who participated in all three and had the smallest number, and you have the winner of this award. So who was it this month? mightysparks, with 12 combined points. :poshclap:
Average Performance Across all Three Challenges

Looking across all three challenges, the average number of points was 26.40. So who scored closest to this value in one of the challenges this month? Coryn, hurluberlu, jdidaco, St. Gloede, and weirdboy, with 26 points each. :turned:
Median Performance Across all Three Challenges

Looking across all three challenges, the average number of points was 14. So who scored closest to this value in one of the challenges this month? allisoncm, Knaldskalle, jvv, Mate_cosido, and sebby, with 14 points each. :shifty:
Modal Performance Across all Three Challenges

Looking across all three challenges, the most common number of points was 1. So who scored closest to this value in one of the challenges this month? 3eyes, allisoncm, blocho, connordenney, Coryn, mightysparks, ororama, RBG, shugs, and vortexsurfer, with 1 point each. And a shout-out to mightysparks who did it twice this month. :satstunned:

2019's Space Jam Awards

Image

These awards are for those strategic individuals who watched films counting for more than one challenge (and reported them in the Triples Challenge thread). Level up each time you earn this award (max 12 each).

Congratulations our Triplers of the month, who each watched 2 films counting for all three challenges: jeroeno, albajos, flavo5000, maxwelldeux, Eva_L, and funkybusiness

And congratulations to our most voracious Doubler of the month who watched 38 films counting for two challenges: jeroeno

Thanks for all the hard work and effort with getting these new awards together.

Intrigued by how (relatively) few of us achieved 'Obsessive Much?' status with the new lower threshold. I was well aware of the fact that jeroeno and myself were the only January participants who watched 36+ for all three Challenges, but I was surprised by the fact that albajos was the only person who got 36+ on two. Whatever the case, I am certainly not on-track to achieve 36 in each of this month's Challenges, so I guess I should enjoy the glory while it lasts.

Feedback: Could you find a less blurry image for the ladies teapot awards? And I'm still a little iffy about highlighting the bottom achiever each month. Props to mighty for taking it in good spirit and all, but this still strikes me as the one (dis)honour that could possibly deter new participants.

Keep 'em comin'! :poshclap:

Bottom achiever is the only award I aspire to this year. Take it away and I'll be crushed.

I have watched TWO Twilight movies while putting these together. I wish I were joking.

That was a little surprising to me too - I thought the total number of different people who did it was about right, but the number of people who did it twice was surprisingly low. And yeah - you'd better step it up because you and jeroeno are the only two who can get to Level 36 on the X/X awards... :P

I'll work on the pic.

And I remember your feedback from the feedback thread. I do understand where you're coming from, but I did try a few small things to address it. Like it's couched withing a stats reporting thread - and the first things you're taught in stats about how to describe a data set are min, max, mean, median, mode, which is what I report, so I hope it flows naturally. I also hope that the general tone of this thread is all in good fun. And I wanted to make it contingent on participation in all three challenges, which helps skew it towards people who are a bit more interested in playing in the challenges. (And perhaps coincidentally, let's not forget that mighty also holds the record for the highest challenge performance, too.)

Oh, I'm well aware of that, but I can already tell you that I have no plans to go to 36 for Iran, and as for the other Challenges, my spare time is going to really impact on my performance. I have only been back at work for one week and already I'm feeling a bit .

Yup, Iran is going to be tough but I got a lot of Iranian films from recent freeleeches. Korea is going to be tough and next month's War challenge is going to be difficult. I'm fearing the Italian challenge the most because December also features the Around the World and Documentary challenges which are two of my favorites. This month is easy, a lot of Oscar nominations/wins from the 1930's and a lot of fun from the Hong Kong list.

Updated 2019 Leaderboard

The first month of the year is now in the past, and all of the January challenges have been finalized. This means we have completed 1/12 (3) of the challenges for this year! jeroeno has jumped out to an early lead, and might just be the person to beat this year. In all, we've had great participation the first month, with 51 people participating in at least one of the official challenges. For the 2019 Official Challenge Leaderboard, the top 25 are below; full results can be found in the first post.

Congrats to Jeroeno - our new hare! You'll hear the hounds baying in your sleep.... You also have a very impressive average rank in all three challenges too.

Thanks for the comprehensive awards and leaderboard, maxwelldeux. :worship: Hoping to make into the Top 25 next month, though with participating in only one challenge a month the top spots are out of reach.

This is the 9th year this is running, and in the previous 8 there has been 7 different winning the yearly leaderboard. Which again probably is a good thing. If this result stands 2019 will give us the fresh blood yet again.

I need to quote this since it is my proof that yes: I was once second on the leaderboard this year! It's not certainly going to stay that way. :(

I'm actually a little surprised that I managed to place that high up. I suspected that I would be in the top 4, but considering that I pretty much flunked the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge, I thought that weirdboy and albajos would outrank me here.

Oh, and yay on the average rank. My average was 9.33 last year and I'm hoping to beat that this year if possible.

We had three very obsessed individuals in February - all from the Academy Awards challenge. Congratulations to albajos, flavo5000, and sebby for cresting the 100 watch threshold! albajos and flavo500 both move to Level 2, and sebby has climbed onto the leaderboard at Level 1.

2019's 300 Awards

Image

This award is for those who have tallied 300 total watches across all official challenges. That's 25 watches/month, with three challenges each month. And with strategic film choices that count for multiple challenges, the number of films required to reach this milestone can be greatly reduced.

After February, we had three people crest the "300 watch" threshold. Congratulations to albajos, flavo5000, and jeroeno for amassing 300 watches after only two months!

This award is for those who have tallied 1066 total watches across all official challenges. That's 89 watches/month, with three challenges each month. And with strategic film choices that count for multiple challenges, the number of films required to reach this milestone can be greatly reduced.

After February, we had no one crest the "1066 watch" threshold. Congratulations to nobody. How long until someone hits this goal?

May 31st is doable, But there are no triples in either April or May (haven't checked, but seems that way), so you really have to put the hours in.

Yeah, I was also thinking it would take the May challenge for someone (likely you and/or flavo5000) to do it, but then again I've been surprised before...

2019's Nerdy Stats Awards

Image

This is a series of five awards based on cross-challenge challenge performance each month. The Top and Bottom awards can be leveled up to 12, while the measures of central tendency could (in theory) be leveled up to 36.

Top Combined Performance

Add up the number of watches from all three challenges, figure out who had the biggest number, and you have the winner of this award. So who was it this month? flavo5000, with 202 combined points. :worship:
Bottom Combined Performance

Add up the number of watches from all three challenges, figure out who participated in all three and had the smallest number, and you have the winner of this award. So who was the conscientious performer this month? zzzorf, with 5 combined points. :poshclap:
Average Performance Across all Three Challenges

Looking across all three challenges, the average number of points was 20.496. So who scored closest to this value in one of the challenges this month? clemmetarey, Onderhond, shugs, and weirdboy, with 20 points each. :turned:

weirdboy also leaps into the average lead, moving to Level 2.
Median Performance Across all Three Challenges

Looking across all three challenges, the median number of points was 11. So who scored closest to this value in one of the challenges this month? funkybusiness and ororama, with 11 points each. :shifty:
Modal Performance Across all Three Challenges

Looking across all three challenges, the most common number of points was 2. So who scored closest to this value in one of the challenges this month? 3eyes, connordenney, Lilarcor, RogerTheMovieManiac88, VincentPrice, vortexsurfer, and zzzorf, with 2 points each. And a shout-out to 3eyes, vortexsurfer, and zzzorf who each did it twice this month. :satstunned:
