The title here refers to Prez who is told that he needs "soft eyes" to make it as a teacher. We're still yet to see him try to handle a class, but that should be interesting given his police background and history of recklessness. Bubbles also registers his nephew at the school where Prez is about to start working. At the moment, the season feels like it is on the cusp of getting really interesting, what with the street boys about to return back to school. The debates and pre-election mayor stuff is getting pretty intense too.

This forum-favorite Canadian documentary finally arrived from the library, and luckily it's on the JR list, so it counts for a challenge this month too. And I just wish I'd seen it sooner - this was awesome. The storytelling and the editing worked together to give a personal and telling description of Winnipeg, one that made me feel like I got to know the city better than if I'd seen half a dozen other conventional docs about the city. I lived in Minneapolis for about 5.5 years, and I felt I really understood and had lived many of the points he was making about Winnipeg.

I've seen most of Maddin's films. The guy is remarkably consistent in his aesthetic and weird tone. If you really enjoy one, chances are you will find few to any of his to be disappointed with.

Well that's a hell of a sales pitch. My only regret is not discovering Maddin during last month's Canada challenge.

:yucky: Ugh, I hate Guy Maddin. The Heart of the World is at least tolerable because it's relatively short, but Archangel and The Forbidden Room were painful to sit through and if My Winnipeg is anything like those two films, I'm probably doing myself a favour by avoiding it.

If you want a Canadian filmmaker championed by Rosenbaum, I would recommend Michael Snow instead. And actually, on that note, I don't think anyone has seen any of the three screenshot films that I included in the OP yet.

While there are more developments with the election for mayor here, it is Prez who is continuing to capture my heart. I really feel for his insecurities and nervousness teaching his first class, having trouble motivating his students and not knowing how to sort out fights. Also the way that admin teachers always seem to be right outside his classroom. Obviously, they are there to help, but you can feel Prez being worried about being watched and judged. And what an end to this episode too. Season 4 is fast becoming my favourite season yet...

Still continuing to enjoy Season 4 more than any other season even without McNulty and Daniels at the forefront. The school scenes are great and very down-to-earth. It's really interesting to watch Prez's evolution as a teacher, trying a rewards and consequences system, even bonding a bit with some of his kids who help him unlock his car by less-than-legal means when he leaves his keys accidentally inside. The race for mayor is tightening too and Kima is beginning to find her feet in a new department after a Mr. Lion phonecall and other rookie pranks.

38. Holy Motors (2012) - 6/10
It was okay. Perhaps my expectations were too high, because I really wanted to like it. Still, it's worth a watch simply for its intriguing approach.

Well, that's the thing about consistency. If you hate one, you're gonna hate all of them.

And see, I hate Michael Snow, so different strokes for different folks, you know.

Only thing I know that I fell asleep watching My Winnipeg in cinema.
and Cowards Bend the Knee or The Blue Hands is absolutely not my cup of tea. So seems I just should stay away from them.

7. The Wire S2Ep9: Stray Rounds (Timothy Van Patten, 2003) [JR#1078] 8
Definitely the Season's turn with one of the strongest episode so far: dramatic intro, very strong build and final cliffhanger.
8. Of Time and the City [JR#1085] 5
9. The Wire S2Ep10: Storm Warnings (Rob Bailey, 2003) [JR#1078] 8-
Starts a little bland but tilts with Ziggy showdown and the accelaration of the plot unfolding. Mouzone"s entrance doesn't disappoint and I am looking forward to the potential confrontation with Omar.

essentially so farShow
1. The Wire S2Ep6: All Prologue (Steve Shill, 2003) [JR#1078] 7+
2. The Wire S2Ep7: Backwash (Thomas J. Wright, 2003) [JR#1078] 7-
3. The Exterminating Angel / El Angel Exterminador (Luis Buñuel, 1962) [JR#492] [Rewatch] 9 (=)
4. Terri (Azazel Jacobs, 2011) [JR#1106] 6+
5. Wild River [JR#475] 7+

The title here refers to the race for mayor, which finally sees its resolution in the episode. Far more interesting though is Omar being arrested after being incorrectly fingered for a murder of a general citizen in broad daylight. A pretty decent watch, but there is sadly less focus on Prez this time, though we do get to see what his kids get up to in the streets.

3. Enthusiasm (Vertov, 1930). Not even Vertov, talented as he was, could make coal mining sexy. A little too agitprop to work well.

Lubitsch tries a few interesting things here such as choreographing his servant actors to move in sync and splitting the screen into three frames at one point. The story though is simply no great shakes and Ossi Oswalda, who was so charming in the much better Die Puppe, is borderline obnoxious as a spoiled heiress here. The film is also simply not very funny, nor is it especially satirical. Things do wrap up rather nicely, a couple of convenient coincidences aside, and the whole film is rather fluffy and inoffensive, but inconsequential too.

Things continue to be interesting on the middle school side of things, from Prez finding the "teaching opportunity" in using gambling to explain probability to his kids, to the new program from at-risk students going ahead with mixed results, to Prez being told "you don't teach math, you teach the test" - something all too true about education nowadays.

Bubbles makes a welcome return to the spotlight in these couple of episodes, teaming up with Herc for protection, yet still relentlessly beat up with Herc unable to honour his commitments in between trying to get back that police security camera that he recklessly allowed to get stolen. We also see more of Prez's disappointment at having to teach to a test, as well as the special program for at-risk kids at the school coming under fire since the kids there are not learning the test. I'm really digging how this season is showing the school funding system to be just as broken as the police system and race for mayor.
