Koo? Ku! This Soviet sci-fi film certainly gets to a promising start with a bouncy music score and much zaniness in the crafts that the aliens travel in, as well as their linguistic difficulties. Things get less interesting though as they manage to communicate in Russian and the novelty of the premise soon evaporates with many repetitive scenes of them traversing the planet's deserts in search of supplies to return home. The film is seldom short on imagination though, and from ferris wheel alien homes to bizarre singing rituals, there is lots to like here even if it runs a little long.

Based on a short story by Stanislaw Lem, as per Solaris and Ikarie XB-1, this film is at its best when exploring the central mystery (who on the crew is a human/android) and deep space uncertainties. As various crew members begin to confess their identity to the pilot, he has to weigh up both their testimonies as well as the evidence that they collected on others, playing sleuth. There is some great dialogue in the mix too ("it's better to be a machine than not exist at all") and eerie sets. The special effects vary in quality though.

Cosmonauts travel to one of the moons of Mars to rescue friendly alien space travelers who got lost on their way to the USSR (oh, yes). Apparently, the aliens enjoyed hearing the radio waves of Russia so much that they just had to go there, however, the songs here are pretty irksome and the characters are downright irritating. The film is blessed though with some amazing visuals, captured in glorious, vivid colour; both the alien's planet and future Russia (with giant public televisions) look gorgeous. It is hard to bask in the visuals with a narrator who tends to over-explain everything though.

I saw 11 different versions of Alice in Wonderland today, but as I am a bit strict to the fantasy definition I'm removing all movies where it turns out the whole story is just a dream or a story being told. I know I don't have to do this, but that is what I'm going with.

(I saw 1910, 1915, 1949, 1966 x2, 1972, 1985, 1986 (mini), 1995, 1999, 2009 (mini) if you wondered) I've also seen 1903, 1951, 1987, 2010 before so I'm now at 15 different ones.

I don't really need to explain the plot here, as you all know it: Alice goes down a rabbit hole. Starts to eat everything.

26. Alice in Wonderland (1966) UK 3 official lists 313 checks
Fantasy. It is a dream in this one too, but I'll let is pass as it is on the Fantasy Cinema: Impossible Worlds on Screen list.
27. Alice of Wonderland in Paris (1966) USA 8 checks
Fantasy. Rater a sequel to the book. Wonderland is boring so Alice goes to Paris instead. She spends the rest of the movie sharing fables with a mouse. So except the main character this has nothing to do with the book.
28. Alice in Wonderland (1985) USA 193 checks
Fantasy. The thing that changes the most in these version are Alice's age. In this one she's rather young so the acting lacks.
29. Alice E01 (2009) UK | Canada 5 checks
30. Alice E02 (2009) UK | Canada 4 checks
__. Alice (2009) UK | Canada 434 checks
Fantasy. One year before Tim Burton did the same Alice returns to Wonderland. In this Hot Topic version it's quite dystopic. And it's a romance.

If I was to "recommend" any of these it's the BBC 1966 one. They don't wear animal suits in that one, so it just seem like a far out stoner trip.

That's an amazing quest through wonderland that you are on, albajos. My favorite Alice is the one by Jan Svankmajer (from 1988). I also really like Dreamchild, which is more the story of the Rev. Dodgson who became known as Lewis Carroll (played by Ian Holm), filtered through the lens of an aged Alice. Jim Henson, in one of his darker modes, helped create the puppets that dramatize Carroll's story within the story. Dennis Potter wrote the screenplay - if you are familiar with his work that gives you the best idea of what this film is like.

Well, why do people keep adapting movies we all have seen before?

The actors are different. What they choose to keep in and leave out is different. And for Alice in Wonderland it doesn't really matter what order the scenes are in either. She has to to be in the rabbit hole first and court room last. Everything else doesn't really matter the order. The 1999 version even threw in The White Knight. And the discussion with the turtle was a wild card. You never know if it stays in or out.

As after 12 different versions (removing 3 that didn't really adapt the first book) I probably have covered every page of the book without reading it.

I mean, fair points. I just couldn't conceive of watching 11 [anything] movies consecutively myself, so this was just a foreign concept to me. But good work covering all the bases!

Impressive feat, I want to watch the majority of these over the next year or two, but in one day, yeah couldn't do it. I just checked what I have seen. I assume you have never seen the 1976 version due to its adult content, that is quite understandable but I do recommend the 1933 version I watched it for the first time last year and I was quite taken with it.

I'll keep all things Alice in one post. More to come today of other movies.

To follow up on yesterday i saw 4 movies today called Alice Through the Looking Glass. With the same rule as yesterday, I'm only counting the one that actually gives us hope that Wonderland exist. Strange choice to keep them less fantastical, I know it's how the books ends, but if children believe in Santa they might as well believe in the Cheshire Cat.

Image

I saw Mary Poppins Returns with a 7-year-old a week ago, and her dad misspoke afterwards making it sound like she was real. And you just saw her eyes light up. It would be so easy to get the same element of wonder out of these.

Anyway, on to the check:
31. Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) USA | UK 1 official list 2 728 checks
Fantasy. But also with time-travel, so a bit of Sci-Fi.

To sum up (stuff I've seen):
Based on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865)
(1903) Alice in Wonderland - because of it's short length it's more like a best of.
(1910) Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - because of it's short length it's more like a best of.
(1915) Alice in Wonderland
(1949) Alice in Wonderland - Animated and live action
(1951) Alice in Wonderland - Animated
(1966) Alice in Wonderland
(1972) Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
(1985) Alice in Wonderland
(1986) Alice in Wonderland (mini)
(1988) Neco z Alenky - Animated and live action the Svankmajer way
(1995) Alice in Wonderland - Animated
(1999) Alice in Wonderland - last hour also includes plot elements from Through the Looking-Glass

Based on Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871)
(1966) Alice Through the Looking Glass
(1973) Alice Through the Looking Glass
(1998) Alice Through the Looking Glass
(2010) Alice in Wonderland - The script is all over the place, and can considered a sequel to the 1951 version. She returns and fight the Jabberwocky and meet most of the characters from Through the Looking Glass as well as reconnects with the cast of Wonderland.

Only focuses on the Jabberwocky
(1977) Jabberwocky

Sequels to the books
(2000) American McGee's Alice (Video Game)
(2009) Alice (mini) - Dystopian return to Wonderland for Alice
(2016) Alice Through the Looking Glass - How do you follow up to the 2010 mess?

Spinoffs:
(1966) Alice of Wonderland in Paris - Animated

I'll check out the 1933 version if I can find it, but probably not in this challenge. I should probably see Swankmajer's Jabberwocky from 1971 as well.

1. Aerograd AKA Frontier (1935) - Aleksandr Dovzhenko

I liked the exterior photography and especially the aerial work. However, this had way too many long speeches delivered in dim, claustrophobic interiors, and the plot sucked.

Everything until now have been US, UK or Canada, so better get some other languages going after this Alice overload.

32. Toki o kakeru shôjo (2006) Japan 2 official lists 8 199 checks
Sci-Fi. A lot of time travel.
33. Sutorîto Faitâ II gekijô-ban (1994) Japan 184 checks
Fantasy. The powers of the fighters of Street Fighter comes from both science and mystical, and there are even cyborgs in this so I could have gone with either. But as the three leads are Ken, Ryu and M. Bison which all have mystical powers let's go with Fantasy here.

5. The Orville: Ja'Lojah (2018)
6. Invaders from Mars (1953)
7. Dolls (1987)
8. The Mummy (1999)

Rewatch, because I love this movie. Mostly because I love Egyptology, and this series has just enough history and information in it to really keep me going and interested.

9. Phoenix the Warrior (1988)

Basically, this was Mad Max Thunderdome, but with boobs. A total sexploitation film set in a desert. The problem with it is that the boobs:badness ratio was off - it was really bad, but failed to provide enough boobs to justify the badness. I mean, if they'd made it funny. Or hired someone to choreograph the fight scenes with better qualifications than "I once bought nunchucks at the mall". Or actually provided any semblance of a plot.

10. Devil Girl from Mars (1954)

A British sci-fi pic about a martian spaceship landing in rural England, and the alien confronting the people staying in an inn. It was fine - good sets, which were fun to look at, but a pretty predictable plot.

11. Chopping Mall (1986)

And this finally fell into the "so bad it's good" camp. Fun slasher sci-fi flick about killer robots in a mall. I'm choosing to think this film was the inspiration for Robocop. But this film had lasers.
