1. Mary Poppins returns (2018) - Surprisingly, not bad.
2. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
3. Gravity Falls: s2e19, s2e20, s2e21

Gravity Falls counts as fantasy, right?

11. Mary Poppins Returns (2018)

Image

An unexpectedly excellent belated sequel to the classic Disney musical that recaptures the spirit of the original, while at the same time spinning a refreshingly different story. The adventures that Poppins takes the kids on here are generally less random this time, with everything working towards a plot with solid foundations. This does invariably lead to a cardboard cutout antagonist, but the film combines song, dance and inventive animation in the exact same manner as the original and the kids are more appealing this time.

A few days late, but I am joining this challenge.

1. How to Talk to Girls at Parties (Mitchell, 2017)
Weird disaster of a film that tries to expand Gaiman's simple short story to feature length by adding lots of stuff about anarchy, viruses and alien politics. It's too poorly written to either make any sense or have any thematic resonance, and instead becomes tedious and irritating.
3/10

Image

2. Split Second (Maylam-Sharp, 1992)
Dick Durkin: I don't think this thing thinks it's Satan, I think this thing IS Satan.
Stone: Well, Satan is in DEEP SHIT!

A Rutger Hauer B-movie, where he's a cop hunting an alien/mutant/demon on low-budget Bladerunner-esque sets representing future London. Fun in places, but the script is a confusing mess (I never understood who or what the alien thing was supposed to be), and there isn't enough cheesy action to entirely make up for it.
4/10

Image

3. A Ghost Story (Lowery, 2017)
Sometimes ostentatiously self-indulgent in ways I equally admired and rolled my eyes at, but there is some beautiful film-making here, and an original concept that is explored in an intriguing way with a scope that became much broader than I expected.
6 or 7/10

Image

4. Batman Ninja (Mizusaki, 2018)
A baffling Japanese take on Batman that butchers the source material to make a Power Rangers-type action spectacle with Batman characters. The animation was impressive, but it had a very annoying Joker character and the plot felt inauthentic, as if it was trying too hard to be "kerraazy" and tick off all the anime cliches.
3/10

Image

5. Oblivion (Kosinski, 2013)
Looks and sounds great, but the generic script is uninvolving and the revelations were unsurprising.
4/10

5. Aerograd (Dovhzenko, 1935). Weirdboy is correct, this really doen't measure up. The "proclamations" made by the various characters quickly become tedious and the beautiful cinematography can't make up for the simplistic plot. My least favorite of the 4 Dovhzenko movies I've seen so far.
SpoilerShow

Just checking, both weirdboy and Knaldskalle have now counted Aerograd (1935) for this challenge. Both IMDB and ICM have this only as a drama, neither lists it as sci-fi or fantasy. Can we get a ruling on this?

There was some discussion on this in the Triples thread. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm fine including it here. It's tagged as sci-fi on TMDB, though from the descriptions of the plot I've read I'd call it more fantasy than sci-fi. Regardless, allowed.

1. Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)
2. El Incidente (2014)
3. Vinyl (1965)
4. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
5. The Orville: Ja'Lojah (2018)

8. The Mummy (1999)
9. Phoenix the Warrior (1988)
10. Devil Girl from Mars (1954)
11. Chopping Mall (1986)

In "honor" of albajos' Alice in Wonderland marathon, I thought I'd attack that classic plot line of "Russians are trying to capture that amphibious humanoid" with a (mostly accidental) double feature:

12. The Shape of Water (2017)

Well, I had some problems with the basic plot lines, but this was a stunningly beautiful film to behold.

13. Chelovek-Amfibiya AKA Amphibian Man (1962)

A young woman is rescued from drowning by some sea creature... turns out it's a scientist's son who was affixed with gills after suffering lung problems. What happens next? Not a great Russian movie for me, as it felt slow and clunky.

I'll of course accept whatever "ruling" is handed down, but it is listed on Wikipedia as a science fiction film and it does take place in the future (from the filming point): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category: ... tion_films

It's also listed as Science Fiction on TMDb.

Oh, and just to tease you a little... :) Radio Nederland's podcast 52 Episodes to Science Fiction Film Literacy: Aerograd is episode 8.

The defense rests.

[Edit: Oh, missed Maxwelldeux's response. Feel free to ignore this.]

It's light on the sci-fi and much heavier on the romance. Still not great, but if you're looking for a Russian/Sci-fi movie, it's there.

38. The Ewok Adventure (1984) USA 699 checks
39. Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985) USA 566 checks
Sci-Fi. Direct sequels to each other. I'm putting Sci-Fi on these simply because they take place on Endor and basically everyone is alien. But the first one is probably more fantasy, as the ewoks have a bunch of powers that are never explained. Simply we know nothing about Endor, the scriptwriters can do whatever they want, and they do, also to resolve a conflict.
With these two I think I've seen every full length Star Wars movie and special, and personally I found these worse than The Star Wars Holiday Special. That one at least had Jefferson Starship.

I also saw another today that after 2 hours goes from 100% reality into Dante's Inferno mode. (It's new, so I wont spoil the title). But the fantasy is not the main focus of that movie so I'll skip it for this challenge.

03. Iron Man (2008) Rewatch - A friend stopped by and we watched this since it was on TV. It may have been ten years since I have seen this one.
04. When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970) 6/10 The special effects are really good, but I can only hear "akeeta" and "neecro" so many times before I go insane.
05. The Orville S2E2 "Primal Urges" (2019) Another episode mostly about relationships, but this time only one and bringing back elements from the first season. More sci-fi than in the last episode and a lot of special effect shots that looked nice.
