Fish out of water (2009)
Semi-animated documentary examining the biblical texts usually used to justify homophobia. I didn't finish it because it was too late at night, but I did watch the biblical parts, that being a subject into which I know quite a bit about. I can recommend it to anyone interested in the subject, although of course it only scratches the surface.

s. Film (Fill'em) (1992) - 7.6 - fun short feature by a professor at my university. Saw this at CFMDC with my dad, and we both enjoyed it.
6. Red River (1948) - 8.2 - how this is on the list I don't know. There's a father-son bromance, but that's about it.
t. Beira-Mar [Seashore] (2015) - 7.4 - small quiet drama from the south of Brazil. Plot is odd, character development is inconsistent, but it's darn pretty to look at.
u. Fresa y chocolate [Strawberry and Chocolate] (1993) - 8.0 - A great film that I quite enjoyed; definitely feels like a film from the '90s, and it's quite camp, but it's got a lot of heart in it. An interesting look at Cuban society.

v. Broderskab [Brotherhood] (2009) - 7.4 - Good effort; didn't really believe in the lead character's choices/motivations/thought processes, but maybe they're realistic for a soldier returning to civilian life looking for a place to belong.

First I thought I haven't seen anything since this challenge started, except for the documentary I mentioned in the LGBTQQIAAP thread. But looking through my film log, there is actually more than I thought. :)

February:
1. Mannen som elsket Yngve (2008) - coming-of-age, coming-out-of-the-closet (but the book and movies do have sequels, so he's bisexual)

March:
2. Kongen av Bastøy (2010) - One of the teachers take advantage of one of the students.

May:
3. Team America: World Police (2004) - Gay scene is of course for laughs
4. Black Swan (2010)
5. The Hangover Part II (2011) - Intersexuals, but used for comedic effect

June:
6. Ballen i øyet (2000) - the main character has twin sisters, both lesbians
7. (A)sexual (2011) - Documentary about AVEN

July:
8. Pink Flamingos (1972) - Divine

9. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
10. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)
The man character Champ Kind does have gay suggestions in both movies without any reactions from his friends. They simply don't understand that he might be gay/bisexual. Both movies does explore diversity at work with the main characters being extremely conservative and sexist/racist. The second one do also have a gay character that we only see for one scene/musical number.

So it is possible to analyze this to bring depth to the Champ Kind character, but do we really think that the script didn't play this just for the laughs :/

:) It's my favourite cinematic niche; I even enjoy most of the trashy queer films. I've been neglecting queer films this year, though, so I need to catch bck up. Fortunately (sadly), there are many that are still <400 so I'll watch a bunch this month. Probably starting with Xenia tonight.
I'm also interested in the first two albajos mentioned. I'll see if I can locate them.
I had no idea there was anything queer about Anchorman. Maybe I'll get around to watching it after all.

w. Demolition (2015) - 8.0 - the queer character was a mild surprise, and did have a significant enough impact on the plot for me to include it here. I really liked how the main character responded to the 'coming out', though other aspects of the way the film dealt with him were off.
x. Jongens [Boys] (2014) - 8.2 - teen coming of age-coming out-first romance dramas are a soft spot for me; and this film is no exception. It especially hit home adding the sports element, and overall I thought it was beautiful to look at and sweet in tone. Will definitely rewatch at some point.

Well, the token gay guy is there, for one musical scene in 2.

Champ Kind's suggestions are few and far between. And maybe the movies doesn't deserve that level of analysis. It's not as extreme as Marlon Wayans' character in Scary Movie which is easily to spot even if he doesn't realize it himself.

There are so many comedies that use it for a few laughs. The doesn't really help the community that way...

Just finished Nights In the Garden of Spain (2010) - New Zealand: pretty pictures, but basically the usual cliches of a married man coming to terms with the life he chose to suppress when he married and started having kids. Only thing different about it (other than the technical skill) is the setting in modern Maori culture.

11. The Lobster (2015)
In the opening scene (so I don't spoil anything) the main character states that he had a experience in college. He asks if they can write that he's bisexual, but they only handle in absolutes, so he have to pick between heterosexual and homosexual. He has to think about it very long before chosing.

y. Xenia (2014) - 8.0 - cute road trip movie that's heavier than I expected. If I had been the older brother, I would have been just as exasperated. Really touching scene with the rabbit.
z. Simon (2004) - 7.6 - surprised this isn't on the cross-reference list. Funnily offensive, but never crosses the line. The actress playing the daughter was way too old for the role, though.
aa. Viktor und Viktoria (1933) - 8.0 - I hesitate to include this because this version isn't nearly queer as the 1982 remake, but I supposed crossdressing is inherently queer so I'll count it. Very different from Julie Andrews's film, but I enjoyed it well enough, especially for a film from that era.

12. Blue (1993) - "everybody got aids and shit"
13. The Last of England (1987) - Jarman again. In one scene a naked man is wrestling? Making out? with a fully clothed army man. Also a later scene with cross-dresing

ab. Winter Kept Us Warm (1965) - 7.6 - Very coded early entry in queer cinema, it's almost too subtle to notice. I like how even if you know the premise it has some nice surprises that challenge what you thought would happen. Also, this is apparently the film that inspired Cronenberg to become a director.
ac. Dap canh giua khong trung [Flapping in the Middle of Nowhere] (2014) - 7.4 - Decent Vietnamese film with a trans supporting character. It's never clear if he considers himself a woman or just like dressing in drag, but it's an honest look at young life in hard times, and never feels cliched or tokenized.
7. Fight Club (1999) - 7.6 - I don't consider this a queer film, even though it's on the list. Slightly homoerotic, yes, but hardly queer.
ad. No se lo digas a nadie [Don't Tell Anyone] (1998) - 7.4 - Could have been better, but overall nicely done. I could identify with the themes of self-loathing, fear of being found out, and wanting a better life, but I felt the ending a bit too pat, even if it was somewhat open ended. It also refused to acknowledge that any of the characters could have been bisexual instead of deeply closeted gay men, but I know nothing about Lima in the '90s so I can't really judge.

regarding Fight Club - The book was written by a queer man. Seems pretty clear that he's dealing with dual lives of LGBTQ people, and rage against an oppressive system that demonizes queer people and so the characters respond in a transgressive way against social norms. Granted, none of the queer content is overt or in-your-face in either the book or the piece, but it seems pretty clear that being queer and writing this during a time when Christian fundamentalists were actively targeting the lesbian and gay communities - seeking to make being gay illegal - is what makes it literary.

ae. The Normal Heart (2014) - 8.4 - Painful to watch, but beautiful. A job well done that plucks at the heartstrings without being overly sentimental. I would watch it again despite the depressing nature of the film.
af. Ich möchte kein Mann sein [I Don't Want to Be a Man] (1918) - 7.6 - Quite short, but really good. I did not expect such openness from a film of that era, especially from one during end-of-the-war Germany. And the straight man who was duped seemed to have no problem kissing another "man", which really surprised me. A good, decent film.

ag. Spotlight (2015) - 8.2 - not a typical queer film, but there are some supporting queer characters and the topic of the film is rife with queer undertones (overtones?). Great film, though.
ah. Goon (2011) - 7.4 - the last thing I expected from this film was a queer story, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised because what's more Canadian than hockey and gays? (answer: weird sex and snowshoes, or making love in a canoe; take your pick).
ai. Dans la maison [In the House] (2012) - 8.0 - Another reason why I keep seeking out Ozon's films; this was a beautiful story that played with your mind; both overt and covert homosexuality on display.
aj. La noche que mi madre mató a mi padre [The Night My Mother Killed My Father] (2016) - 7.8 - popcorn airplane film that was actually pretty good. Minor queer subplot used for humour.
ak. Tangerine (2015) - 7.6 - What a hot mess. Started out not liking it, probably because I went in with high expectations after all of the praise. Ended up enjoying it overall; unexpected Armenian sideplot was interesting. Will probably be THE trans film for the next few years.
8. Mulholland Dr. (2001) - 7.4 - A mindfuck that was initially uninteresting, and the plot shift left me buggered. After reading about the film and finally understanding (more or less) what happened, I liked it more, but it's definitely a film that will sit in my mind for a while. The lesbian scenes just seemed gratuitous, though, even if they were supposed to be mocking that gratuity.
9. Flaming Creatures (1963) - 3.6 - Groundbreaking? Absolutely. Good? Absolutely not.

And with those last three I achieved a bronze on the BFI Flare official top list before the end of the year. Maybe I'll push for silver this year.

(bonus) City Lights (1931) Chaplin appear gay to a boxer he's about to meet in the ring to make him uncomfortable.
14.Victor Victoria (1982) - Homosexuality and a lot of cross dressing. And just a gay ol' time :)
(bonus2) Split (2016)
Spoiler: click to toggleShow
One of the personalities is a woman, but by definition, he's not really cross-dressing since he actually belives he is a woman during that personality.
15. The Danish Girl (2015) -
16. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) - Both movies is about sex change (surgically)

10. Boy Culture (2006) - 6.8 - not as dumbed down as I'd feared it would be. Been meaning to see this for a while. Glad I did, but feel no need to revisit it. Strange take on life as a prostitute.
11. In einem Jahr mit 13 Monden [In a Year with 13 Moons] (1978) - 7.2 - a really weird movie. Tragicomic at times, it's groundbreaking in the way that it treats it's main subject with such indifference and normality that half the time you forget that you're watching the life of a transperson fall apart, despite that identity being part of the core of the movie. Well made, but I just couldn't connect well with it.
ak. Saint Laurent (2014) - 6-7ish - finally got around to seeing the other YSL biopic from 2014. I think overall I preferred Yves Saint Laurent for it's acting, plot cohesion, and general focus, but damn, Saint Laurent was beautiful with three beautiful men at the centrepiece, often in various states of undress. The plot was rather thin, though.
al-i. Wer Wir Sind [Who We Are] (2016) - 5.8
al-ii. Agua [Water] (2014) - 6.4
al-iii. Miroirs d'été [Mirrors of Summer] (2007) - 6.8
al-iv. The Tormentors (2016) - 6.4 - been largely ignoring short films for this challenge, but I discovered a new site that showcases them so I watched a bunch recently. Nothig really that good or noteworthy, but Miroirs does feature a teenage Xavier Dolan two years before his directorial debut.

(bonus) The Last Emperor (1987) Eastern Jewel rolls down Elizabeth's stockings and proceeds to nibble on her toes. But they are high on opium.
17. Brokeback Mountain (2005) I was going to link to a review from a norwegian christian conservative newspaper, but they have set up a payment wall. Well, well, to sum up. "Destructive message. With an overtly gay agenda."
18. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) Fetish: SM, Submissive and Dominant.
19. Spotlight (2015) One of the victims (one of the first they interviewed) was molested because he was gay.
20. Moonlight (2016)
21. Little Miss Sunshine (2006) Frank Ginsberg fell in love with one of his students.
22. Transamerica (2005) Topical.
Do the BFI Flare list only consentrate on homosexuality? This should really be on a LGBTQ+ list.

A lot of films with minor queer characters this month, half of whom I wasn't aware of ahead of time.

an. Una giornata particolare [A Special Day] (1977) - 7.8 - quiet and poignant; better than I had expected.
ao. Kung fu [Kung Fu Hustle] (2004) - 7.8 - gay subcharacter that walks the fine line between actual person and caricature. I wasn't sure if I was offended or not, but it was still good.
ap. In Bruges (2008) - 8.2 - confused as to whether Gleason's character is supposed to be gay or not. Borderline queer film, but very enjoyable black humour.
12. Another Country (1984) - 7.6 - Nice quiet film with performances by young Everett, Firth, and Elwes. I enjoyed it, but also was left wanting more.
aq. Låt den rätte komma in [Let the Right One In] (2008) - 8.2 - very well done. The queer component almost seems unnecessary, but then it's adapted from a book where it's much more explicit, so it kinda makes sense.
ar. Torremolinos 73 (2003) - 7.6 - queer for it's somewhat subversive tone, slightly queer for a minor character who was perfectly at home with the rest of the cast.
as. Star Trek Beyond (2016) - 7.6 - the queerness is almost trivial, and I was aware of it beforehand, but I was expecting the reveal to come at the end of the film as an afterthought; was pleasantly surprised to see it came out within the first 20 minutes, and it was so completely normal. About time, Star Trek. About time.
at. Mary and Max (2009) - 8.0 - the queer part was heavily foreshadowed, but it still kind of worked.
13. Orlando (1992) - 7.5ish - Tilda Swinton is God. And Quentin Crisp makes a delightful Queen Elizabeth. Finally managed to find a copy of this and wasn't let down. This is criminally underseen.
au. Water (2005) - 8ish - A hijra character has a significant supporting role, and is treated in such a matter-of-fact way I almost missed it the first scene they were in.

26. Let Me Die a Woman (1977) - It's the International Transgender Day of Visibility today, and this even fit both official challeneges currently running.
There are documentary segments to this, but I can't really recommend it, as it is both sexplotation (Harry Reems is in it) and quite graphic showing actual surgeries. But with five movies seen by Doris Wishman this month, I should perhaps have expected this...

To be a 40-year old film now, this final quote from the film is quite bold today: "We look forward to the time when sex labels will no longer exist, and there will be only people." Strange to see that the 70s was much more progressive than the current situation. What happened?

27. Tokyo Goddofazazu (2003) - A homelsess cross-dressing homosexual is one of the three main characters

av. Juste la fin du monde [It's Only the End of the World] (2016) - 7.8 - Dolan adapts another play, but this one is much heavier on the dialogue. Not my favourite of his filmography (which I've now recompleted), but still a solid film that shows queer folk are just like everyone else with our follies and fallacies; if you didn't know the lead was gay ahead of time you might not even notice.
aw. Dying at Grace (2003) - 8.0 - one of the 5 patients is gay, and the scenes between him, his partner, and his parents are very tender. A very difficult film to watch (especially if you've lost family members in similar circumstances) but something I would consider to be essential viewing. Plus, this reiterates that we live and love and die just like everyone else.
ax. Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) - 7.6 - the token lesbian is back, still kind of raunchy and inappropriate, but her character arc is smaller here than in the first film. I don't know if Ashley and Jessica were supposed to be a couple or just standard chorus, and the "sexual confusion" between Beca and the German lead singer was somewhat interesting but went nowhere. It was laugh-out-loud fun at some parts and some of the songs/mashups were good, but overall not as good as the first one.

I didn't even mention Pitch Perfect 2 as her character is just like Ghostbusters or Power Rangers. She's just there. They don't make any points out of it.

An unexpectedly busy queer month for me.

ay. Praia do Futuro [Futuro Beach] (2014) - 7.0 - I was anticipating this for a while, but it was rather disappointing. The story didn't really go anywhere, and it didn't give us anything to connect with the characters enough to be vested in their individual stories. It was nice to look at, though.
az. Strákarnir okkar [Eleven Men Out] (2005) - 6.8 - I was looking for this for a number of years, and finally found a copy. Thoroughly disappointed. I don't remember why it was so high on my watchlist, or what made me think it was going to be great, but it was rather middling. Still, I'm glad I finally managed to see it, and it was nice to see a film deal with homophobia, coming out, and professional sports. A for effort and intent, but that's about it.
14. Thelma and Louise (1991) - 8.4 - I kind of get why this is on the LGBT cross-reference list, but it's not a queer movie. Feminist and female liberation? Absolutely. Awesome road trip movie? Definitely. Lots of social commentary and subtext? Sure. Lesbians? straight white male fantasy. Still, it's an excellent movie, and a surprise favourite for me.
ba. Chocolat (2015) - 7.8 - Biopic about the French clown from the beginning of the last century. The co-lead (Charlie Chaplin's grandson, who inherited his comedic timing, looks, and demeanor) may or may not be gay, but we are led to suspect he is (as the Malaysian censors also believed as they censored out part of the film). Subtlety works sometimes, but in this case I think the character would have been better served if he wasn't neutered. The noble asexual homosexual is a tiresome trope, no matter how dedicated to his craft he was.
15. Ba wang bie ji [Farewell My Concubine] (1993) - 8.0 - Pretty. The history was a bit confusing, but the visuals were nice, even if I'm not such a fan of Chinese opera (as presented in the film). Probably something worth revisiting in 10-20 years with greater understanding of the context and backstory.
bb. Les deux amis [Two Friends] (2015) - 7.4 - Directorial debut of Louis Garrel. A hot mess. Garrel is hot, the movie is a mess. The female lead (Garrel's wife/ex at the time of filming) is fascinating and she made the movie worth watching. The two friends of the title... not so much. They have a weird bromance, and late in the film Garrel's character flirts with a gay hotelier for what I can only describe as narcissistic reasons that didn't really make sense to me.
bc. Moonlight (2016) - 8.4 - Finally saw this. Wanted to see it on a bigger screen than just a laptop; unfortunately there was no way it was getting a proper release in Malaysia. Saw it on an Apple TV at work. I think I need to resee this. I really like it, but I don't know why. The story wasn't quite what I thought it was, and the cinematography was not as amazing as I'd been lead to believe, but it was still a phenomenal film that hit me emotionally, despite not having so much in common with Little/Chiron/Black. I think I enjoy this as I read more reviews and analyses of the film, and will rewatch this in a few years to better appreciate just how groundbreaking it is. Time will tell if the success of this film will allow more films made about and by marginalized communities will get more exposure and acclaim.

1. The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) - I liked it plenty even tho wasn't fan of exclusion of some information at the end because makers thought it would stray the focus or something

City Lights (1931) - Chaplin acts gay to a boxer he's about to meet in the ring to make him uncomfortable.
Kongen av Bastøy (2010) - Molester
The Last Emperor (1987) - Eastern Jewel rolls down Elizabeth's stockings and proceeds to nibble on her toes. But they are high on opium.
Split (2016) - dual perosnalities, of which at least one is a woman.
Viskningar och rop (1972) - The maid is completely devoted to one of the sisters. But it seems more like motherly compassion than gay.

bd. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016) - okay raunchy comedy with a predatory butch bisexual character. Seems they couldn't figure out how to portray a sexually liberated/uninhibited/confident female character without turning her into an antagonist (but not quite villain). Frustrating.
be. Sangailes vasara [Summer of Sangaile] (2015) - teen lesbian coming of age/budding romance drama. Not really my style, but not bad by any means.
bf. Beauty and the Beast (2017) - the movie was banned in some countries for that? That was the 'exclusive gay moment' they were baiting us with? Pales in comparison to the animated version (at least in my memory; time for a revisit), and LeFou was only slightly less subtle than he would have been during the Hays Code era. Interestingly, I haven't heard anyone complain about the multiethnic cast in early Renaissance France, which is refreshing.
bg. Giant (1956) - it's on the list of 101 films gay men should see. Not really sure why; one character is coded butch, but that's about it. The film was good, though.
bh. Casse-tête chinois [Chinese Puzzle] (2013) - the end of the trilogy about Xavier and his women. His best friend is a lesbian, and she gets much more screen time and plot importance in this film, as does her partner and her love life. An interesting end to the trilogy.
bi. Intolerance (1916) - I'm not sure if the effeminate character is supposed to be gay or not, but if so, I was surprised at such a portrayal so early on in film, even if it was pre-code.
bj. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) - Not sure what I think of this film yet. I think I liked it. Bisexual love triangle is a major plot point, and it's very open and accepting of alternate types of love.

Watched La Sagrada Familia tonight. Has a secondary storyline about two men. Don't want to say more than that. It's an official check for Cinema Tropical.

Haven't been running across much queer cinema as of late. I've seen everything on the BFI Flare list that is available at my library. Need a lead on the newer films I should be watching out for.

Listen, Daddy. Teacher says, 'every time a car alarm bleeps, into heaven a demon sneaks.'
