I have not, though I do rate the director (Kawalerowicz) so maybe, one day. Any good?

The '51 version is worth it for Ustinov's Nero.

It's been awhile, but yes I thought so. Just on the principle that nations generally interpret their own literature better than furriners do. Saw a Norwegian TV production of a Tennessee Williams play that was weirdly genteel. I especially avoid American remakes of foreign films.

XX. 1930s Disaster Movies
1. San Francisco(36)
2. In old Chicago (37)
3. Deluge (33)
4. The Hurricane (37)
5. The last days of Pompeii (35)

All but one follow the same formula: characters go about their lives, get into conflicts and what not, until a deus ex machina arrives in the form of a disaster. The exception is Deluge, which starts with the disaster (and a weird one it is, too, this being before plate tectonics were thought of) and is more in the post-apocalypse ballpark.

Of the others I liked San Francisco the least. The Chicago fire was enhanced by my new orange computer glasses. The hurricane was an anticolonial epic and I felt had some substance. The last days of Pompeii involved Christ and was explicitly not based on the Bulwer-Lytton novel.

XXI. Islam and the West
1. Valentino’s Ghost (2012)
2. Three Kings (99)
3. Blood and Oil: The Middle East in World War I (06)
4. El Naser Salah el Dine / Saladin and the great Crusades (Egypt 63)
5. A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia (UK 92)

Possibly my favorite set yet. #1 and #3 are documentaries (the portrayal of Muslims in Western media from Valentino on, and The Middle Eastern theater in World War I and how events shaped subsequent history.)
#5 dramatizes T.E. Lawrence's unsuccessful attempt to win Arab independence at the Versailles conference after WW I.
# 4 is an epic about the Crusades from the Muslim point of view.
# 2 is set in Iraq just after the Gulf War of 1991.

Seen earlier and highly recommended:
O.K. Mister (Iran 79) - surreal satire about Western commercialism in prerevolutionary Iran.

XXII. 17th-century England: Civil War, Commonwealth, Restoration
1. The Devil’s whore (UK 2008)
2. The Lady and the Highwayman (UK 89)
3. The exile (47)
4. Forever Amber (47)
5. The Vicar of Bray (UK 37)

Bunch of bodice-rippers except for the last one. #2 and #4 are set during the Restoration, the others end with it.

The Devil's whore, a 4-part minseries, was of particular interest to me because it's the first movie I've found that begins to do justice to the radical fringe during the Civil War and Commonwealth period. The Levellers loom large and our fictitious heroine also gets mixed up with the Diggers and the Ranters. There are historical inaccuracies (John Lilburne did not die in prison but became a Quaker, and Cromwell was not crowned king), but oh well.

The exile starred Douglas Fairbanks Jr. as Charles Stuart waiting to be restored to the throne. Maria Montez had a fairly small part but one would almost think she could act.

Forever Amber was THE naughty book when I was a young teenager but I never got a chance to do more than glance through it. The movie is rather boring except for George Sanders as Charles II.

The lady and the highwayman features a young Hugh Grant as Fanfan la Tulipe.

The Vicar of Bray is a 1-hour musical illogically set in Catholic Ireland. It turns the song on its head; Stanley Holloway's Vicar is anything but an opportunist. It ends where the song begins, with the Restoration. I found it a delightful oddity.

Theme#33: British Silent Docs

Image

1. The Battle of the Somme (Malins, 1916)
2. The Great White Silence (Ponting, 1924)
3. The Epic of Everest (Noel, 1924)
4. The Open Road (Friese-Greene, 1926)
5. Drifters (Grierson, 1929)

The two doomed expeditions of South Pole and Everest offer the most intriguing footage. Drifters is Leviathan the 2012 doc 80+ years earlier.

Theme#34: Classic Yakuza

Image

1. A Colt is My Passport (Nomura, 1967)
2. Rusty Knife (Masuda, 1958)
3. Blind Woman's Curse (Ishii, 1970)
4. Massacre Gun (Hasebe, 1967)
5. Graveyard of Honour (Fukasaku, 1975)

Two chances to admire the sheer ridiculousness of Joe Shishido's cheeks with Colt and Massacre Gun and these two were the pick of the pack, Suzuki-esque visual style, fun stuff. Blind Woman's Curse more exploitation with tenuous gang/yakuza links. Had to get a Fukasaku in for this theme, but this wasn't my favourite of his.

Theme#35: Newspapers

Image

1. Scandal Sheet (Karlson, 1952)
2. Deadline - USA (Brooks, 1952)
3. Absence of Malice (Pollack, 1981)
4. Defence of the Realm (Drury, 1986)
5. The Paper (Howard, 1994)

Films either directly about newspapers or with journalist as protagonist, in honour of Spotlight, one of the best examples for a while. Scandal Sheet easily the best here, quality noir with Broderick Crawford in fine form. Deadline USA of the same year is more earnest. Absence of Malice is a snooze, while Defence of the Realm stretches believability at times but quite a decent thriller. And who knew Michael Keaton been in the newspaper business for 20+ years? The Paper doesn't really offer too much plotwise, but it's likeable enough in a pretty 80s way.

The only ones of these I've seen, I think, are Drifters and Defense of the Realm. The latter impressed me at the time (when it came out on video) - the ending being more or less what I expected.

XXIII. Joan of Arc
1. La merveilleuse vie de Jeanne d'Arc (Fr 1929)
2. Joan of Arc (48)
3. Jeanne la Pucelle I - Les batailles (Fr 94)
4. Jeanne la Pucelle II - Les prisons (Fr 94)
5. Saint Joan (US/UK 57)

Watching them in this order was an arc - all good and each building on what went before. I didn't expect the restored Ingrid Bergman version to be quite so magnificent. (It never played in my home town because of the scandal going on at the time, and I guess was only released in buchered version anyway.) I feel a bit guilty about counting Jeanne la Pucelle as two even if they were released that way - I intended to watch Bresson's Procès de Jeanne d'Arc, but by the time I'd seen her trial (passion) 3 times I was too wrung out to want to go through it again. Shaw was a welcome comic relief (sort of) with Richard Widmark as a buffoonish Charles and Jean Seberg channeling Falconetti toward the end.

catch-up 'cause I keep forgetting to post these when I finish.

Theme#36: Concept Albums/Band Films

Image

1. Help! (Lester, 1965)

3. Head (Rafelson, 1968)
4. Tommy (Russell, 1975)
*5. True Stories (Byrne, 1986)

Most of these better on record than film. However, True Stories is not one of Talking Heads' best albums, but I enjoyed the film a lot.

1. Savage (Spielberg, 1973)
2. Someone's Watching Me (Carpenter, 1978)
3. The Jericho Mile (Mann, 1979)

*5. Special Bulletin (Zwick, 1983)

The best of these is by the director who went on to do the least interesting work. So it goes.

Bit of a tenuous theme, but I had a few on my watchlist that seemed to fit together. The one I liked best was the least weird. Most of the others just too much of everything. Nakashima in particular is painful, having seen this one and Confessions.

I thought Special Bulletin was Marshall Herskovitz (I sought it out on the recommendation of his nephew, a friend of my son's) but now I see he was the writer. Anyway, it should be better known.

Trying to figure out a theme to fit a bunch of disparate films is half the fun with this challenge. Then you go looking for a couple of others to round out the set, and come up with all sorts of strange discoveries.

XXIV. Kurdish directors

1. Bekas (Sweden/Iraq 12) - Karzan Kader
2. My Sweet Pepper Land (Iraq 13) - Hiner Saleem
3. Babamin Sesi / Voice of my father (Turkey 12) - Zeynel Dogan
4. Mahi va gorbeh / Fish & cat (Iran 13) - Shahram Mokri
5. Êk Momik, Du Momik / One candle, two candles (Iraq 2014, 105m) - Jamil Rosebiani
6. Bawke (Norway 06, short) - Hisham Zaman (Iraq-Norway)

I didn't plan it this way, but I guess that since we have both Iranian and Turkish official lists it's fitting that most of the films here are from Iraq. They include a humor-filled drama about two orphaned boys with an unrealistic plan to go to America to get help from Superman (#1); A "Mideastern" pitting the sheriff and the schoolteacher in a border village against the local crime boss (#2); a feminist romcom in which a young girl forced to marry a rich old man gains support from all the other female characters (#5); and a short drama about immigrants seeking asylum in Norway (#6).

In #3, a Turkish Kurd tries to find out the truth about his absent father from his mother.

The real find was #4: A surreal creepfest shot on one 2-hour take by Shahram Mokri. Being Iranian, he has to make a horror movie without showing any horror, and does it brilliantly. (His earlier film Ashkan, the charmed ring and other stories (2009) is also delightfully strange.)

XXV. Napoleon
1. Anthony Adverse (36)
2. Monsieur N. (Fr/UK 03)
3. As Linhas de Torres Vedras / Lines of Wellington (Portugal/France 2012)
4. Der junge Medardus (Austria 23)
5. Eagle in a cage (US/UK 72)

#1 is an adventure/romance; Napoleon's role is small but crucial to the plot.
#2 and #5 take place on St. Helena, place of his final exile.
#3 - Napoleon is only represented by a portrait but his forces devastate Portugal until defeated.
#4 - pre-Hollywood Michael Curtiz; Napoleon in Austria. Based on play by Arthur Schnitzler.
I also attempted to watch Adieu Bonaparte (Egypt 1985) hoping I could manage the French subs for the Arabic parts and the lack of subs for the French parts, but I couldn't.

XXVI. Eastern European Communist-era musicals
1. Heißer Sommer / Hot summer (E Ger 68)
2. Upal / Heat (Poland 64)
3. Még kér a nép/Red psalm (Hung 72)
4. At zijí duchové / Long Live Ghosts! (Cz 77)
5. Veronica (Romania 72)

What most of these have in common is more emphasis on the group than the individual. #1 is a teen musical, #3 a sort of historical pageant, #4 and #5 children's musicals. The exception is #2, which is in-your-face absurdist, and isn't much of a musical at that (the two leads are supposedly songwriters but all we hear is different verses of the same song scattered throughout).

XXVII. Catholics (2010s)
1. El Club (Chile 15)
2. Spotlight (15)
3. The letters (14)
4. In the name of / W imie.... (Poland 13)
5. Jimmy’s hall (UK-Ire 14)

#1, #2 and #4 treat the subject of priests and sexuality in very different ways. #5 concerns the church's alliance with the rich in a more general social and political oppression of the poor. #3, a biopic of Mother Teresa, portrays the church in a more positive light.

Theme#41: Unloved Sequels

Image

1. Airplane II: The Sequel (Finkleman, 1982)
2. The Two Jakes (Nicholson, 1990)
3. TRON: Legacy (Kosinski, 2010)
4. Futureworld (Heffron, 1976)
5. Battle Royale II (Fukasaku & Fukasaku, 2002

Mostly unloved for good reason. Tron Legacy was okay thanks to soundtrack & visuals. Two Jakes and Airplane II weren't terrible but just pale in comparison and you'd always get more enjoyment from just watching the original again.

Theme#42: Soviet Montage

Image

1. One Sixth of the World (Vertov, 1926)
2. The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks (Kuleshov, 1924)
3. The House on Trubnaya Square (Barnet, 1928)
4. Nail in the Boot (Kalotozov, 1931)
5. Enthusiasm (Vertov, 1931)
Bonus rewatch: The Man with the Movie Camera (Vertov, 1928)

Basically an excuse to watch my shiny Vertov boxset but also some films that are broadly listed with montage film, though they were generally not as heavy on the montage style as Vertov/Eisenstein.

Theme#43: Poliziotteschi/Italian Crime

Image

1. We Still Kill the Old Way (Petri, 1967)
2. Il grande racket (Castellari, 1976)
3. Milano calibro 9 (Di Leo, 1972)
4. La mala ordina/The Italian Connection (Di Leo, 1972)
5. Lucky Luciano (Rosi, 1973)

The two Di Leo films actually part of a trilogy, didn't get onto the third. They sleazy and moderately fun, Calibre 9 probably the best example. The Rosi film is not really part of the genre

Theme#44: Southern Gothic

Image

1. Ruby Gentry (Vidor, 1952)
2. The Long, Hot Summer (Ritt, 1958)
3. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (Miller, 1968)
4. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (Eastwood, 1997)
5. Sweet Bird of Youth (Brooks, 1962)

I'm still not entirely sure precisely what makes a Southern film Southern gothic but I generally like things that are labelled it! (exception here being the long and dull Eastwood one)

Theme#45: Alice

Image

1. Alice in Wonderland (McLeod, 1933)
2. Dreamchild (Millar, 1985)
3. Alice ou la dernière fugue (Chabrol, 1977)
4. Jabberwocky (Gilliam, 1977)
5. Alice in Wonderland (Miller, 1966)
Bonus rewatch: Alice (Svankmajer, 1988)

One of my favourite themes I've done so far, variations on one of my favourite books. Really liked the trippy 1966 TV version in particular. The Chabrol film - loosely inspired by, rather than an adaptation of - was also a nice discovery. Finally it was a pleasure to revisit Svankmajer's take.

XXVIII. Sea swashbucklers (30s to 50s)
1. The buccaneer (38)
2. Blackbeard, the pirate (52)
3. Fire over England (UK 37)
4. Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (51)
5. Captain Kidd (45)

All quasi-historical and/or based on real persons. Battles and swordfights galore.

The buccaneer is Jean Lafitte, helping Andrew Jackson win the battle of New Orleans during (well, after) the War of 1812. Robert Newton hams it up as Henry Morgan aka Blackbeard in the reign of Charles II. Lawrence Olivier saves England from the Spanish Armada. Hornblower (Gregory Peck) goes on a secret mission to the Philippines during the Napoleonic Wars. Captain Kidd (Charles Laughton, subtly menacing) gets his comeuppance from William III thanks to Randolph Scott.

XXIX. Indigenous narratives
1. Shorts:
1a. Taua (NZ 07) - 15m
1b. Warbrick (NZ 09 - 12m)
1c. Tama tu (NZ 05 - 17m)
1d. Weewar (NZ 06 - 8m)
1e. Two cars, one night (NZ 03 - 12m)
2. Boy (NZ 10)
3. Daughter of Dawn (19 20)
4. In the land of the head hunters/war canoes (1914)
5. Ukamau / And so it is (Bolivia 66)

#1 and #2 give some fascinating views of Maori life in various contexts. #3 and #4 are silents about Native North Americans. #5 was my favorite - suspenseful plot and haunting score. (This is opening response to Monty's unofficial challenge - more later perhaps.)

I regularly watch time travel movies on December 31st, and I couldn't fit them in anywhere else on the forum anyway :)

An approach I wouldn't have thought of. Has a kind of "degrees of separation" ring to it. One could start with, e.g. actors who have played MacBeth.

Theme#46: Swedish Cult

1. I Am Curious (Yellow) (Sjoman, 1967)
2. They Call Us Misfits (Jarl & Lindqvist, 1968)
3. Thriller - a Cruel Picture (Vibenius, 1973)
4. Giliap (Andersson, 1975)
5. A Decent Life (Jarl, 1979)

bit of a mish-mash with my choices here and I'm not sure you could call them all 'cult' but an interesting cross-section of 60s/70s Swedish films.

Theme#47: American Politics

1. Wag the Dog (Levinson, 1997)
2. Nixon (Stone, 1995)
3. Primary Colors (Nichols, 1998)
4. The Last Hurrah (Ford, 1958)
5. Bob Roberts (Robbins, 1992)

I started this set in the runup to the election. Impossible to watch these films without comparing to current events. Where films like Primary Colors and Wag the Dog just feel like they've been surpassed and belong to a different era of cynicism, Bob Roberts is the one which most clearly anticipates current events. A populist self-promoter from outside politics using a potent mix of celebrity, patriotism and rightwing rhetoric to rise to political power. As his opponent says at one point:

"I get vibrations from Mr Bob Roberts of a very disturbing sort. I haven't any idea who he is. I haven't any idea what he's like. I don't think I'm supposed to have any idea. I know that he proved to be a master of pushing racist buttons and sexist buttons, this and that. The politics of emotion. He's very good at that. What's behind it? I don't see anybody at home. But I will say that once or twice in the course of our debate I detected a slight whiff of sulphur in the air."

I think a few years ago it would've all seemed too broad, too much. Now he seems like a subtler warmup act for the creature now running America.

@brokenface - I've seen all these and Bob Roberts is definitely my favorite - so much so that I bought it when it came out on DVD, which I rarely do.

@albajos - I don't know any of the films OR directors, but #4 is a fun theme!

Theme#48: BBC Plays

1. Play for Today: Blue Remembered Hills (Gibson, 1979)
2. Play for Today: Hard Labour (Leigh, 1973)
3. Play for Today: Edna the Inebriate Woman (Kotcheff, 1971)
4. BBC2 Playhouse: Caught on a Train (Duffell, 1980)
5. Play for Today: Penda's Fen (Clarke, 1974)

I picked these based on writers/directors and funnily enough the two people amongst them who I thought safest bets were Dennis Potter (who wrote Blue Remembered Hills) and Mike Leigh who did Hard Labour and those two were the weakest of the bunch.

I have a slightly irrational loathing for adults acting as children in an exaggerated manner which is the whole premise of Blue Remembered Hills and that killed it for me. Hard Labour is grim and indeed quite hard labour to get through.

Edna the Inebriate Woman is also pretty grim but worked better. Written by Jeremy Sandford who was best known for Cathy Come Home and this has a similar Ken Loach feelm though directed by Ted Kotcheff (of Wake in Fright & First Blood fame), who I didn't realise had a pretty extensive TV career prior to film.

Caught on a Train is one which monty has namedropped so many times here I felt I had to include it in this theme even if it was the only one that was from something other than Play for Today. It's a very fine, slow burner character piece/allegory written by Stephen Poliakoff who I should watch more from.

Finally there's Penda's Fen which has a strong aura which grabs you from the start. Alan Clarke is another writer/director I need to explore more. That super-lavish BFI boxset is out of my price bracket, but I'll dig around.

Huh, been over a year since the last one. Anyways...

Theme #7: American High School
1. Easy A (2010)
2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
3. The Breakfast Club (1985)
4. Grease (1978)
5. Pretty in Pink (1986)

Also watched but didn't count (the thought of this came afterwards):
Mean Girls
Clueless

Have a soft spot for this kind of films. The John Hughes-related films were clearly the best of the bunch, the top spot going for Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which was just great. The Breakfast Club was also very good, though wasn't sold on all of it. Pretty in Pink was the weakest, but still good fun. And they all had really nice soundtracks.

Easy A was carried largely by Emma Stone's charms, otherwise just okay. Grease was just pretty crappy. Mean Girls was great, and Clueless also good fun. What was fun about these films was spotting now more-or-less established actors in their youth.

Quite a bit of diversity amid the chess games here - most similar were #2 and #5, both about chess as redemptive force in the lives of poor people of color - set respectively in Uganda and New Zealand. The prodigy in #2 is young girl from a poor village; #4 and #5 center on chess geniuses who are respectively bipolar (Maori) and autistic. #1 involves a tournament of early (1980s) computer chess programs, leavened by the presence of a New Age groupy-feely conference going on in the same hotel. In #3 two wealthy Indians pursue the game oblivious both to the needs of their wives and to political developments in their corner of the British Raj. And of course I couldn't leave the Russians out of the mix...

XXXIV. Aviation - non-war

1. Only Angels Have Wings (39)
2. Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (UK 65)
3. Sully (16)
4. The extraordinary life of Amelia Earhart (10)
5. Dirigible (31)

Again, a good variety in theme if not country.
#5 was most interesting to me because I know so little about serious lighter-than-air craft.
Amelia Earhart was one of the ghosts of my protected youth, along with Richard Halliburton and Ambrose Bierce - it felt so spooky that people could just disappear.

Yes, I would probably have seen 20 of those at the end of the month. Could probably divide them to 2D, 3D and stop motion. Or with humans, or anthropomorphians.

3. Three Outlaw Samurai (Gosha, 1964)

5. Samurai Spy (Shinoda, 1965)

All good, Three Outlaw Samurai was the best.

I had trouble with the Brazilian New Wave too.

XXXVI. Bears
1. Six bears and a clown (Cz 72)
2. Paddington (UK 14)
3. L’ours /The bear (Fr 88)
4. Grizzly man (05)
5. Ursul/ The bear (Romania 11)

#1 and #5 were circus comedies - I found #1 hilarious, #5 too frenetic for my taste. #3 and #4 involved grizzlies in the wild - #3 was staged with trained bears but quite a nice family nature film set in western Canada. (It evoked Ernest Thompson Seton's Biography of a Grizzly, which I read as a kid.) I didn't like Grizzly Man much. #2 was a fun family fantasy; I haven't read the book(s).
