395. Season of the Witch (1972)
★ ★ ½
George Romero’s least well-known horror film, probably because its 70s no-budget look is visually unappealing. It lacks focus for sure, with some sloppy editing and a couple of really long dialogue scenes. (The film exists in 3 versions: the 89min Season of the Witch, the 130min Hungry Wives and the 104min Jack’s Wife, which I saw.) Once again, Romero shows a mastery for using Horror as Satire, showing how a housewife’s boredom would lead her to witchcraft, which liberates her from domestic life. That aspect of the film, and how it all plays out is smartly-handled.

396. Return of the Evil Dead (1973)
★ ½
It was while watching Tombs of the Blind Dead that I realized much as I had interest in the films on They Shoot Zombies’ list, the only way I would complete it is as a batch where I could quickly move away from such uninspired choices. This film is better I think than Tombs of the Blind Dead, but that’s the 200 films between lowering my expectations.

397. The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973)
★ ★ ½
Having played Dracula 10 times, this is the last time Christopher Lee is up against Peter Cushing’s Van Helsing. (Appearing in over 30 films together, they would co-star one last time after this in House of the Long Shadows.) Lee always has great presence, but Cushing is the superior actor and this lesser Hammer Horror comes alive every time he’s on screen. Stakes couldn’t be higher with an older Count bored with this world using Satanists and the plague to bring about Armageddon. Fittingly, this is one Hammer film that doesn’t rush the ending.

398. House of Whipcord (1974)
★ ★
In the final twenty minutes I started to see the satirical angle to this British women in prison film. There's something definitely going on in the subtext about the systematic suppression of females done by other women who hide behind men to carry out their own revenge against pretty ladies having a good time. It took me so long because the film's surface is a pandering fetish picture. Not too violent and not at all scary, I can understand the film finding a cult of fans but I won't be joining in.

399. The Devil’s Rain (1975)
★ ★
”Absolutely the most incredible ending of any motion picture.” is a bold claim by the marketing department. While not remotely true, the ending is the best part of this film and the final twist is even better than that. Getting there, however, is no fun at all. There’s no cohesion to the scenes, a disaster of editing, with too much of what’s left performed without dialogue so that it’s boring too. The inexplicable star power includes Tom Skerritt, Ernest Borgnine, William Shatner, Eddie Albert, Ida Lupino and John Travolta.

400. Grizzly (1976)
★ ★
It's so Jaws that I could never let the film stand on its own merits. Moving the story to the woods and First Blood's color palette of green and brown, there isn't a single good shot involving the damn bear, which is described as being twice as big and strong as any bear in existence, but when you see it, it's just bear-sized. Christopher George does a good William Holden.

401. Island of Death (1976)
★ ½
Extreme film. I get the filmmaker was aiming for shock and sometimes he hits it in a memorable or satirical way, but there's a lot of aimless, poor filmmaking too. I've seen terrible versions of this type of film and this is often, but not always, better.

402. The Haunting of Julia (1977)
★ ★
The intense opening where a couple loses a child reminded me of Don’t Look Now and The Changling. What follows however is less about horror and more about being overwhelmed by grief. Mia Farrow gives a strong performance, but the director is more interested in watching her being sad then handling the supernatural moments, which pop in like an unwanted intrusion even though that’s the only time the film comes to life.

403. Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)
★ ½
Faye Dunaway plays an edgy fashion photographer who inexplicably has visions from the point-of-view of a serial killer. John Carpenter wrote the heavily altered script – 5 other writers credited on IMDB – but was busy making Halloween. (Ha!) I’d be interested in a remake of his original draft because the photography angle is interesting. The cop thriller with a number of suspects (and Dunaway falling in love with Tommy Lee Jones while everyone around her dies) is a barely coherent mess.

404. Prophecy (1979)
★ ★
Environmental pollution creates a mutated grizzly bear. Film wastes 75-minutes on one-dimensional character building, with only a couple of brief attack scenes. However, the final half-hour is Insane!!! The creature is far more extreme than the films ‘PG’ rating would suggest, and director John Frankenheimer flexes his muscle with tension and a couple of the biggest scares I’ve had all month. The film is also unintentionally hilarious, and it’s impressive that the movie is able to thrill and chill amid such bad moments and stupid character decisions.

100% Complete Again

416. Leprechaun (1993)
★ ½
I’ve dodged this bullet for a long time. On the slasher scale, Leprechauns surpass Chucky dolls at looking more silly than scary. That means you have to be really smart to write an effective film where your unstoppable menace is a Leprechaun. The script does a pretty good job laying down the rules – which I understand are quickly discarded in the sequels – but there isn’t one single laugh or one threatening scene to be found. Watching a young Jennifer Aniston run around in this nonsense was more entertaining than I expected.

417. Necronomicon (1993)
★ ★
Adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft stories with a meta-framing story. Starts very disappointing with a poorly-done, confusing sea creature story from Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Silent Hill). The 2nd tale is like a boring episode of Tales From the Crypt, but the finale is directed by Brian Yunza (Bride of Re-Animator), whose team of creative make-up artists push it to the limits. The audacious visual splatter of the last twenty minutes makes art out of gore, and its relentlessness is pretty entertaining.

418. When A Stranger Calls Back (1993)
★ ★ ★ - Okay
Like the original, the first 20 minutes is the best. Then it becomes mundane, though not as much as in the first film. The finale is really good, with a gimmick that makes the film a superior sequel and recommendable on its own.

419. Dark Waters (1993)
★ ★ ★ - Okay
Here’s where They Shoot Zombies serves its purpose. I don’t know anybody involved, in front of or behind the camera. It’s a UK/Russian production shot in English, though there’s very little dialogue. It’s a Folk Horror mystery with symbolic use of fire and water, witchcraft and strange nuns. For a long time, it didn’t make much sense, but there is a strong sense of vision that transcendeds plot confusion and a really low budget. It comes together in the end, and the horror imagery along the way held my interest.

420. Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995)
★ ★
The first half is so laugh-free and desperate that it’s kind of sad. I’m trying to figure out why the film gets better, including a staking scene I thought was consistently amusing. My theory is that I was determined not to quit so I started looking for any near laughs, and I did find them. Not a lot, but more than I expected.

421. The Mangler (1995)
★ ½
A sentient laundry-folding machine is a pretty thin premise – and I already wrote about the killer elevator – so the script puts in so many subplots and distractions that the movie runs 106 minutes. Director Tobe Hooper justifies this by letting the actors run wild, a technique common with his less successful work. So when the massive machine gets up and chases after people by the end, it doesn’t seem that unusual.

422. Bad Moon (1996)
★ ★ ½
I have trouble watching animals in peril because an actor will know they are giving a performance while a dog has to be trained to behave in ways they may not understand. This is a werewolf story told from the point-of-view of a family dog who discovers, confronts and fights off the monster. It speaks well of the filmmakers that I had a difficult time with some scenes, because they didn’t look fake and the dog gets severely beaten. It’s a decent, little story but perhaps one that’s better to read than to watch.

423. Black Christmas (2006)
½
From the writer/director of that really good remake of Willard, this is one of the worst films in the wake of Scream. The Christmas period detail is decent (though not as good as Krampus), but the characters are hateful, the story is routine and the editing is choppy. Nobody seems to understand how bodies work, with people being busted up like they’re made out of pumpkin.

424. Hell's Ground (2007)
★ ★
Pakistani horror film aims at a lot of targets: zombies, backwoods folk, social commentary. It’s all quite crazy and alien, while at the same time being wholly derivative.

425. Left Bank (2008)
★ ★ ½
Slow burn, urban version of The Wicker Man and once I knew where it was going the story became sadly predictable. Has enough new wrinkles, including some really strong body horror and a well-acted relationship drama, but without the wholly original folk weirdness it’s just a pale imitation.

426. Vinyan (2008)
★ ★
Many reviews use the phrase Don’t Look (Apocalypse) Now, which is all too fitting a label. A couple travel to Burma, on the slim chance their deceased son was actually kidnapped. Along the journey, they slowly go insane while the strangeness of the jungle consumes them. The sound mix interestingly puts the atmosphere noise in the foreground and the dialogue behind it, adding to the dislocation, but I was never hooked by the journey.

427. Zombie Strippers! (2008)
½
Everything I feared with no good surprises. Looks so cheap too.

428. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
★ ½
One of the biggest problems with the original film is they didn’t have the budget to match the ambition. You can often see the strings on the nightmare visuals, but the film is made with passion. This is the opposite. Plenty of money for production values and a talented cast, but there’s no care, so the characters behave like pawns in a film and not real teenagers. Jackie Earle Haley is a better actor than Robert Englund, but the limp script gives him nothing to sink his talent into.

429. Wake Wood (2010)
★ ★ ½
Irish Horror starring Aidan Gillen and Timothy Spall left me deeply confused about what the filmmakers were going for. Domestic drama about a couple who lose a child and use folk witchcraft to bring her back has its emotions beaten and bloodied by numerous scenes of body horror and injured animals. Later on, the throw in some brutal murders – usually with the child involved – that would make Jason Voorhees queasy. There’s a definite tone here, which is why I can some people enjoying its originality.

366. Night Monster / House of Mystery (Beebe, 1942) #724 on TSZDT
Seems like a bog-standard Old Dark House mystery. Occasionally atmospheric, but there's a lot of dialogue and not much horror. There are some great actors in here but this isn't a good showcase for their talents.

367. Audrey Rose (Wise, 1977) #797 on TSZDT
Feels like its proper home is on daytime TV entitled Reincarnation on Trial: The Audrey Rose Story, except it somehow managed to attract Wise to direct and Hopkins to star. The first half is OK, but the second is a tedious court case that slides into dullness. Hopkins is the best thing about this, giving a surprisingly heartfelt performance.

368. Witchboard (Tenney, 1986) #799 on TSZDT
Some teens mess witha ouija board and then a supernatural force starts killing people. It's typical of the VHS era in that a safe and generic plot template is used to make sure that it doesn't go far wrong and holds the attention for the single watch of a rental customer, but there's not much to recommend it beyond that.

Image

369. The Man Who Changed His Mind / The Man Who Lived Again (Stevenson, 1936) #626 on TSZDT
A fun Karloff vehicle, which benefits from one of his most definitive mad scientist performances as well as a witty script. The film does suffer from a feeling that the story is being rushed through, and as often happens in these films the "good" characters are so flat and uninteresting it's impossible to root for them against Karloff.

370. Bad Moon (Red, 1996) #905 on TSZDT
An OK werewolf film that opens with its best scene of werewolf carnage and then never manages to top it. Telling the story from the point of view of the dog is a good idea, but they only partially commit to it so the story doesn't have the uniqueness it could have had. Nice werewolf costume and makeup, pity they just use computer morphing for the transformation.

371. L'Inferno / Dante's Inferno (Liguoro, 1911) #235 on TSZDT
This makers of this hadn't quite figured out how film works, so the narrative is told by title cards and the film is more a sequence of tableaux of Dante's vision. This film seemed to get quite a lot of hate on iCM, but I thought a lot of the images held an eerie power. I had a very good experience watching this with my 92-year-old Italian grandmother, who enjoyed it immensely.

372. Amityville II: The Possession (Damiani, 1982) #770 on TSZDT
At its best in the middle section, when it is arguably superior to the original Amityville (which isn't a huge achievement because the original is quite bad), but it never develops its ideas and goes into a terrible third act where it does an Exorcist rip-off.

373. The Mummy's Ghost (Borg, 1944) #486 on TSZDT
I liked the downbeat ending, and there's the usual entertainment from seeing the lumbering Mummy attack people, but the Universal horror films were out of ideas by this point.

I sense an update coming soon.

430. Macario (1960)
★ ★ ★ - Okay
With the 1001-2000 there are a lot more titles that don't neatly count as Horror. If I ever decide to tackle the list in earnest, I'll probably make two lists and Marathon the not-really-Horror titles separately. This is a very original story and fairly well told in terms of its use of magical realism. Not too compelling, but refreshing.

431. Baise-moi (2000)
½
I grew up knowing about this film, but I still wasn't prepared for the low quality of both the filmmaking and the acting. Now, I don't know how this turned enough heads to drum up any controversy.

432. Tragedy Girls (2017)
★ ★
Horror Satire about two teen killers covering their rampage for Internet acclaim. There are moments where it comes really close, such as when they capture another serial killer (Kevin Durand) hoping for a mentor only to find to their disappointment that he's working without a plan. Would like to have seen a female director bring out the friendship more and I'll happily watch something else by this writer or director. Also Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead from Deadpool) has got the makings of a movie star.

433. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
★ ★ ★ - Very Good
I kind of loved this. Certainly put it above The Favourite, possibly above all other Lanthimos. The tone is mystery and intrigue with some of the stranger early scenes adding to the suspense and dread. The reveal scene is what I love about Lanthimos, an absurd idea, delivered with matter-of-fact seriousness. It can't possibly be true but every scene that follows backs up the absurdity. It's also a turn that will cross a moral line for some, yet Lanthimos balances it by cranking up his deadpan comedy. I wouldn't say it falls apart in the end, certainly not as much as The Lobster, but things get a bit unsteady.

434. Annabelle: Creation (2017)
★ ★ ½
I could rate this higher because a lot of the scary bits work, but it's a pretty crappy script (not The Nun crappy, just typical Horror film crappy). There's none of the lingering nightmarish feel like last year's The Haunting of Hill House, something to give a lasting fright instead a bunch of good jolts, but this would be a good Halloween choice after some drinks and bar food.

An attempt by AIP to cash in on the success of Price's Witchfinder General with spurious links to Edgar Allen Poe. It has the pleasures of hammy British actors, gothic atmosphere and a hodge-podge of folk horror tropes, but it's unoriginal and predictable.

375. Haunted (Gilbert, 1995) #948 on TSZDT
A familiar plot of a skeptic visiting a mansion to disprove some hauntings, only to discover that the ghosts are all too real. The film seems much more interested in Beckinsale's character (who is more eager to strip off and go skinny-dipping than a co-ed in a teen slasher) having liasons with the hero than the spooky goings-on, which is just as well given that none of the supernatural stuff is scary or particularly interesting until the last few minutes.

375. Haunted (Gilbert, 1995) #948 on TSZDT 4/10
376. Billy the Kid Versus Dracula (Beaudine, 1966) #720 on TSZDT
A cheap drive-in movie that strays into so-bad-its-good territory only occasionally, but the bizarre premise and presence of John Carradine ensure watchability. The number of idiotic things in this movie makes me think it would work better as a "party" movie rather than watching it alone.

377. Yeogo goedam II / Memento Mori (Kim-Min, 1999) #889 on TSZDT
I'm not sure the Whispering Corridors series has much appeal outside its target audience of Korean teenage girls, but this one does boast a good finale and tackles themes of homosexuality, statutory rape and suicide with sensitivity. I feel it comes undone by having the horror elements be minimal, and the plot driven by dull dialogue.
4/10

378. The Oblong Box / Dance, Mephisto (Hessler, 1969) #612 on TSZDT
There are some interesting elements about colonisation and slavery, but these only figure in the beginning and end of the movie. The rest is gothic revenge and body-snatching in a plot riddled with holes. Disappointly, Price and Lee never get to play against each other, but are stuck in separate plot lines that weirdly both involve unrelated body-snatching conspiracies. There's definitely fun to be had with the gothic tropes and the unconvincing horror, but a lot of potential is squandered.

379. The Invisible Man Returns (May, 1940) #631 on TSZDT
Vincent Price's first horror movie is an amusing follow-up to the Invisible Man but nowhere near the greatness of that film. The main problem is the film's shying away from unplesantness and tragedy - a clear example of the distaste for the horror genre that developed during World War 2. It's clear that the natural arc of this story is for the Invisible Man to gradually become evil, and the characters say as much, but the film refuses to commit so that it can move towards a happy ending.
5/10

380. The Return of Count Yorga / Curse of Count Yorga (Kelljan, 1971) #680 on TSZDT
This seems like it might have been an important part of developing the idea of the vampire as tragic romantic hero. Yorga is obsessed with a human woman, and he wants her to love him but doesn't want to turn her into a vampire. Why not is unclear. It wasn't until the following year's Blacula that this plotline would be given the explanation of the woman being a reincarnation of the vampire's lost love. Anyway, this wasn't as good as the first. It retains some of the creepiness, but the plotline now meanders and seems confused about what it wants to do.

I've been really lazy with challenges and such over the last few years so it was pretty funny to see I'd only watched 2 in the OP. I've watched a lot more, but just suck at posting about them. Anyway, I'm trying to focus on this list as much as possible now so I'll start posting about them. I've got a bit less than 30 unwatched in the main list currently, and 319 in the 1001-2000 list, but I'm also investigating beyond that to try and find some obscure goodies. I'm using the randomizer on the watchlist to make it a bit more fun as well.

If anyone wants to recommend me stuff, here's my watchlist: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/blep/mightysparks/. And recs for horror films NOT on this list also welcome!

Main list:
3. The Mangler (1995) 6/10 (ranked #707)
fter a series of blood accidents, a police officer begins to suspect the laundry folding machine is possessed. This is a lot more entertaining than you'd expect. The plot is obviously ridiculous, but it's not dull and dragging, eg like Sharknado, with only its 'unique' hook to keep you watching. Englund, Levine and Crutchley put in fun performances, particularly the relationship between Levine and Crutchley. It doesn't skimp out on the gore or deaths, it's not gross gore but silly and campy and full of blood. The woman playing Sherry, though, jesus. No way is she believable as SIXTEEN, and her entire dialogue is SCREAMS BADLY.

4. Devil Doll (1964) 5/10 (ranked #628)
A magician/ventriloquist, with a seemingly alive dummy, hypnotizes a wealthy heiress to marry him so he can take her inheritance. The story, and the twist, have been done to death so there is no originality here. Bryant Haliday's creepy and mysterious, yet charming performance is what keeps it together. There seemed to be actual genuine tension between him and the dummy at times, and it could've given the ending more weight if this was focused on more, instead of his weird seduction of the annoying woman. It also feels a lot older than it actually is.

Beyond the Canon
SpoilerShow
Shorts Selection
Danse macabre (1922) 6/10 (ranked #3375, appears on 1 list)
Two lovers try to evade death. Energetic with some cool editing. Doesn't really feel like a 20s film. Nothing mindblowing, but fun little short that should really be in more lists.

First Night in the New House (2015) 4/10 (ranked #3805, appears on 1 list)
A young girl investigates a strange noise she hears during her first night in a new house. Ok little student short that is clearly a student film. The shots and editing are super clunky, the acting is bad, and the ending is dumb. The muffled shots of the mother are just weird and it constantly draws attention to its amateur-ness but it is sort of endearing. Should stay unknown though.

It Took Guts (1979) 6/10 (ranked #4684, appears on 1 list)
A bored teenage boy on a hill decides to cut himself open. This is just a pointless gore fest, but you can tell the kids in it are just having so much fun making gore effects and being silly and it becomes a fun little ride. It must've been fun to watch while it was circulating in clubs in the early 80s.

Nightmare at Elm Manor (1961) 6/10 (ranked #6548, appears on 1 list)
A woman finds herself pursued by a creepy vampire in a mansion. Only exists for the sake of having a woman with big boobs run around naked, so it's kind of pointless though sort of ahead of its time. It's surprisingly nicely shot with some cool shadows and it's quite atmospheric. The dude is also pretty creepy but it doesn't even pretend it's about anything more than some boobies (it's amusing and fun though). Worth a watch though, and should be on more lists.

The Mechanical Cow (1927) 7/10 (ranked #5987, appears on 1 list)
Oswald and his mechnical cow try to rescue his girlfriend. I liked this and found it cute and kind of strange. The animation was really cool and I liked the sound effects/voices, it was just nice and really fun. It ain't horror though.

The Haunted Mouse (1941) 6/10 (ranked #3530, appears on 1 list)
A cat wanders into a ghost town and sets his eyes on a ghost mouse. This was fine, but nothing special. All the Looney Tunes things kind of feel the same to me. This was cute enough, kid-friendly and the ending was kinda cool.

Crestfallen (2011) 4/10 (ranked #5360, appears on 1 list)
A woman decides to kill herself. Another obvious student film, a bit more creative and interesting than the earlier film but feels pretty basic and like they couldn't capture good audio so just put music over it all. Not really horror though.

Bosko's Mechanical Man (1933) 6/10 (ranked #5955, appears on 1 list)
Bosko creates a robot to do his chores around the house, but it instead wreaks havoc. Another average Looney Tunes short, which is entertaining enough and the robot is sort of amusing, but it's not particularly funny or special. Calling it horror is a bit of a stretch.

Humbug (2016) 5/10 (ranked #6151, appears on 1 list)
A grumpy young woman is kidnapped by her jolly neighbour to get her into the Christmas spirit. This had some interesting ideas and the plot is fun and fairly well paced, but the poor acting and general low budget-ness of it held it back from being something really entertaining.

Lonesome Ghosts (1937) 6/10 (ranked #3337, appears on 1 list)
Some bored ghosts call up Mickey's ghost hunter service to have a little fun. The mirror scene was amusing and it was decent enough fun, though it's hard to not see Ghost Busters in it.

Skeleton Frolics (1937) 7/10 (ranked #3431, appears on 1 list)
The skeletons rise and begin to frolic. I actually liked this a lot more than Skeleton Dance. The animation is cute and fun, with some really cool sequences (eg, stealing the skeleton's head). Good kid-friendly horror, should have more votes.

The Contraption (1977) 5/10 (ranked #6798, appears on 1 list)
A man builds a contraption that is gradually revealed. Found this a bit boring and like it didn't take full advantage of the humour of the concept (the film's only line of dialogue made me groan), but it's kind of atmospheric and creepy with its sterile feel so would recommend it regardless.

Mickey's Mechanical Man (1933) 5/10 (ranked #5965, appears on 1 list)
Mickey builds a robot to fight for him, but it goes a little haywire. Thought the Bosko short was better than this and found this one quite boring.

Seiren (2015) 4/10 (ranked #3808, appears on 1 list)
A model is bitten by something during a seaside photo shoot and she begins to change. Pretty pointless, not that fun and pretty bad acting/dialogue all around. It reminded me of Contracted, which had plenty of issues of its own, but this wasn't as 'clever' or entertaining.

Turn Your Bloody Phone Off (2012) 5/10 (ranked #4568, appears on 1 list)
A series of indents shown at FrightFest to encourage viewers to stay off their phones. This is a pretty mixed bag and they're not really good, but somewhat amusing. I was kind of disgusted by The Pencil and I'm confused as to whether that makes it good (for just being totally disgusting and crossing the line) or bad for being really poor taste.

Making Friends (2011) 5/10 (ranked #5359, appears on 1 list)
A young lonely boy with a stutter goes out on Halloween to make friends. This was a bad film with an interesting idea, and since it's apparently adapted from a short story, I'd probably say go read it instead.

The Frog, the Dog, and the Devil (1986) 5/10 (ranked #5981, appears on 1 list)

A Nap és a Hold elrablása (1968) 5/10 (ranked #5950, appears on 1 list)
The sun and the moon are kidnapped by a monster. The animation drew me in at first, and if you like cool animated stuff that's a bit surreal and not focused on story so much you might like this, but gradually it just bored me.

Spooks (1931) 5/10 (ranked #2284, appears on 2 lists)
Flip the Frog seeks shelter in a haunted house. Not really that bad, but forgettable. I forgot to write about it, and I've already forgotten it after a couple of days.

Do pivnice (1983) 5/10 (ranked #5970, appears on 1 list)
A young girl goes to the basement and finds some creepy things. I thought I'd like this more, considering it's Svankmajer and has some pretty creepy/weird imagery (like the bed of rocks), but it lacked atmosphere and was dull.

Features

Crimes at the Dark House (1940) 5/10 (ranked #2496, appears on 2 lists)
A man kills the wealthy Sir Percival Glyde and takes his identity in order to inherit a large estate he has recently inherited, killing anyone who gets in his way. This isn't bad for an early horror/thriller, though the scares and tension are nonexistent. It's fast paced, and 'Glyde' is a hammy over-the-top villain with a silly evil laugh who is not shy about dispatching of everyone who stands in his way of getting his money. It's also surprisingly blunt with Glyde's sexism and creepiness, and his delight in murder, which make it a little more entertaining than the usual, but it won't change your life.

Ajeossi (2010) 6/10 (ranked #4856, appears on 1 list)
A quiet man with a tragic past goes after a drug and organ trafficking ring when they kidnap a young girl from his neighbourhood. The pacing was a bit slow and the characters weren't really that interesting, but this felt like it should've been better than it was. It was difficul to have any kind of connection with the lead and his emo hair since he was just a silent fighty action man and his backstory was too little, too late. The action wasn't that compelling either, it felt restrained and artificial and didn't go well with the seriousness of the plot, which itself was dealt with with a little too much melodrama. Also not horror.

Unfamiliar with most of these so thx. Been putting off Ekusute and Henjel gwa Geuretel far too long so will try to prioritize these!

I could go on for quite a while, but got bored :D. There are some good films in there I wouldn't really approach as full-on horror films though (like Seom or Mon Seung).

1001-2000

Henjel gwa Geuretel (2007) 6/10 (ranked #1699)
After crashing his car near a forest, Eun-Soo is found by a young girl and brought back to her family's home where the children have a strange grip on their parents. This was pretty similar to the Twilight Zone episode with the kid and the teacher, but it finds a way to make the idea its own. The fairytale visuals are a little cheesy and while they do help with the atmosphere, they just don't work as well as they should. The film is mostly well paced, with the mystery behind the children keeping the film interesting until it's revealed and then the film collapses into a melodramatic mess. The lead could've been a bit more interesting and complex as he was a bit pointless.

Beyond the Canon

Proxy (2013) 4/10 (ranked #2230, appears on 3 lists)
After an attack causes a pregnant woman to lose her baby, she befriends a woman at a support group that reveals their true natures. Calling this a horror film is a real stretch, it's a thriller at best, and with that genre expectation I was left a bit confused. The film still isn't that good regardless, the acting is quite awful and the story plods along with loads of unnecessary moments. While the characters all have their interesting points and could've made for an interesting psychological drama about trauma, they're not fleshed out enough for their motives and actions to make sense.

Krisha (2015) 6/10 (ranked #4495, appears on 1 list)
A reformed alcoholic attends a family reunion after being away for a long time. So, this received one vote in TSZDT and it's not a conventional choice to label as a horror film since on the surface this film has a thin plot and is a straight family drama. However, it is understandably experienced as a horror film with some unusual choices, such as the intrusive score that at first made it seem amateurish but actually helped build the tension, played with the 'realism' of the rest of the film, and made the situations more uncomfortable. The acting was hit and miss, at times it feels really natural and flows well, but at other times feels ridiculous and contrived (such as the husband's discussions with Krisha, and the sister's confrontation with Krisha).

Nothing from the main list this time:

1001-2000

The Fourth Kind (2009) 6/10 (ranked #1453)
A psychologist finds evidence that her patients are being abducted by aliens. It's a little all over the place, and some of it works and some of it leaves you scratching your head, overall it's pretty enjoyable. The 'intro' by Jovavich stating the film is true leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth for the rest of the film. The 'archival footage' mixed with 'dramatization' idea is interesting except that none of the archival footage is convincing, and just brings attention to how cheesy the dramatization stuff is. The story is interesting, it's well paced and the mystery grips you, but the acting isn't quite good enough to make the psychological side of it more effective.

Ekusute (2007) 7/10 (ranked #1701)
A morgue watchman sells hair extensions that kill the people who wear them. Having not liked any of Sono's films in the past, I definitely wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. The plot summary suggests a message about beauty standards but it's not about any of that, and while that could've made for a good film, this is all the better for going its own way. Kuriyama is a likable hero, Osuji is hilarious, and even the kid is pretty sympathetic. The tone is weird, but it has a good sense of humour though it's not slapsticky and in your face, and the horror parts work fairly well too. The hair is genuinely creepy and some of the shots are super disturbing.

The Seasoning House (2012) 6/10 (ranked #1494)
A mute girl is kidnapped and forced to work as an assistant at an illegal brothel where other kidnapped girls are forced to work as sex slaves. This film is dirty and grimy and has some genuinely disturbing scenes but it doesn't have enough 'meat' and falls apart at the end. The build-up is slow and tense and claustrophobic and leaves you wanting more, but when Angel finally gets her chance to have revenge and escape, it's disappointing. Instead of cheering for these disgusting people to be killed, you're just left shrugging. Some of the 'fight' scenes are really weirdly shot and distracting as well.

Beyond the Canon

Acolytes (2008) 6/10 (ranked #2154, appears on 4 lists)
Three teenagers blackmail a serial killer into killing a man who did something terrible to them in the past. There were a lot of elements that I liked but it didn't entirely work for me. The three teenagers are annoying, because they're teenagers, and though that helps make their actions more believable it was also hard to care. The guy who looked like an anime character was the weakest actor of the lot and put me off. It didn't go in the directions I expected which was refreshing, but while the first half had some good moments of tension, the second half becomes muddled and loses its way.

Les 7 jours du talion (2010) 5/10 (ranked #2364, appears on 5 lists)
A man kidnaps and tortures the man who raped and murdered his 7 year old daughter. The main issue with this film is that it's too simple and doesn't do anything more with this concept other than the torture part of it. It's cool, calm and collected -- and there is no music throughout the film -- but it lacks tension. The gore is done well, but there's not enough of anything more for it to really make you feel anything. The main character says almost nothing while he tortures his victim, but beyond that the character isn't interesting enough to grow or change or draw you in to his psyche or his actions.

8MM (1999) 5/10 (ranked #5233, appears on 1 list)
A private investigator is hired to find out if a snuff film is real or fake. While this was relatively entertaining, it has aged terribly and is a bit of a drag sometimes. God, does it feel like the 90s though, geez; especially Joaquin Phoenix's character. The characters are overall quite weak stereotypes and the good guys are not really likable and the bad guys are not disgusting enough. Also, Cage's wife is the naggiest most unsupportive bitch ever, like holy crap, I was waiting for her to get kidnapped and murdered because I thought she couldn't be that unlikable and horrible unless we were meant to celebrate her death. It also felt like a noob dipping their foot in to depravity, which I guess in the late 90s was how the general public were, but now it just feels like it doesn't go deep enough into the psychology/consequences and doesn't make it something emotionally effective (eg, the LOOK HOW NORMAL I AM monologue at the end).

Rokugatsu no hebi
Seom
Mon seung

Like it:

The Tall Man
Henjel gwa Geuretel
Alone (2007)
Acolytes
Les 7 jours du talion
Jigoku Kôshien

Liked it long ago, but fairy certain I still like it:

The Seasoning House
Pon
Gurotesuku
Bunhongsin
Organ
Khun krabii hiiroh

Liked it, but long ago:

Pulse
Ju-on 2
The Fourth Kind
Unfamiliar with most of these so thx. Been putting off Ekusute and Henjel gwa Geuretel far too long so will try to prioritize these!
I'm sensing a Sion Sono theme here :)

I've actually actively liked pretty much every movie I've seen from him, horror or otherwise (Love Exposure is the breeziest 4-hour movie I've ever seen and Tokyo Tribes is ludicrous fun). I've had Guilty of Romance in my watch stack for a long time... Maybe it's getting about time to crack it open.

I've been doing something similar. I've only got one left on TSZDT to get back to 100% (which I may knock out today or tomorrow) and I've been working on the 1001-2000. There are actually some really good newer horror movies in there that just haven't been around long enough to end up on a lot of lists yet.

As for recommendations from your watchlist, here are some:
Zibahkhana (2007): Not actually a good movie but notable for being the first really gory movie from Pakistan. It's actually a lot of fun in the right mindset but really makes little to no sense most of the time.
Serial Mom (1994): Really fun movie. Kathleen Turner really digs into this role.
Halloween (2018): Pretty good. Not perfect...Has some really unnecessary stuff in it, but it could've certainly been much worse and at times captures a little bit of the magic of the original.
Gerald's Game (2017): An admirable adaptation of Stephen King's long thought unfilmable novel. I strongly recommend just shutting it off about 5 minutes before the end though because the actual ending is just stupid and unnecessary.
A Night to Dismember (1983): One of the most gloriously terrible incoherent messes I've ever seen.
Willard (2003): I actually liked this remake more than the original. Crispin Glover is pretty much perfect casting for Willard.
Annabelle: Creation (2017): The first Annabelle was boring and completely forgettable but this sequel is actually pretty decent with some genuinely effective sequences in it.
The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014): Another remake I liked more than the original, it has a Scream-esque vibe about it, basically revolving around copycat murders in the town where the incident the original movie took place.
Death Becomes Her (1992): Is it obvious yet I like horror comedies? I had a lot of fun with this one too. And the effects work was top notch for the time.
Pengabdi Setan (2017): I actually just watched this one for a movie lunch I host at work (we watch movies over lunch every couple weeks). Well paced, solidly made flick that is recommended if you dig Asian horror.
Pulgasari (1985): More of an interesting curio than actively good. It's a kaiju movie from North Korea, so that's kinda neat.
Scrooged (1988): Really? You haven't seen Scrooged? I really like Bill Murray and this one has him in top form.
Monster (2003): Very well-made flick on Eileen Wournos, the most notorious female serial killer. I recommend checking out the two documentaries on her as well.
Elfen Lied (2004): A nice throwback anime to the golden age of 80's hyper-violence. Honestly there are better horror anime out there (The TV series Monster I feel is a legit masterpiece and possibly the best anime I've ever seen, maybe even one of the TV series I've ever seen).
Uninvited (1988): Really bad. No joke. But hilarious.
Cannibal: The Musical (1993): Your enjoyment of this will depend on your love of Trey Parker & Matt Stone. Even in their very first project, their penchance for catchy showtunes and absurdist/tasteless jokes are on full display.
Le orme (1975): This was an interesting offbeat giallo that had a different vibe than a lot of others from the time.
The Man with Two Brains (1983): A great and somewhat underseen Steve Martin comedy that I think is actually funnier than The Jerk.

Also some anti-recommendations (meaning I strongly suggest avoiding these like the plague):
All the Guinea Pig movies: virtually plotless gorefests. a waste of time unless you just like to admire effects work
Megan is Missing: Very unpleasant found footage movie. Dull for a large portion of it's runtime and then it's incredibly uncomfortable, going for shock value.

Ok... I gotta stop... this is going on long.

Added all to my super long watchlist: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls048608434/

A few that I've been meaning to see for a while (my boyfriend wanted to watch Gerald's Game with me but I said I wanted to read the book first, now I cbf and am waiting until he wants to watch it with me, sigh). I avoided Annabelle, and I feel weird about watching sequels before the first films but I guess I'll have to get them over with at some point. Not expecting much, but hopefully the sequel is kinda fun.

Main list

5. Revenge of the Creature (1955) 5/10 (ranked #619)
The creature from the Black Lagoon is captured and turned into an attraction at an aquarium. As soon as the TV was turned off, my memory of this film almost completely disappeared. It was a real drag and there were so many irrelevant time-padding shots and scenes of animals and unimpressive underwater shots. The plot was just the typical 'monster falls in love with generic woman and tries to capture her in his primitive but honest ways' and is almost always a lame waste of time. The film is not terrible, it's just a completely formulaic and typical 50s B-movie and is completely forgettable.

6. Lust for a Vampire (1971) 5/10 (ranked #598)
An ancient vampire family stay immortal by picking off the innocent girls at a nearby finishing school, but a visiting author falls in love with their daughter. My plot summary makes this sound way more interesting than it actually is. The film's entire existence is to sleaze about young girls while creepy older men prey on them (and every vampire film ever). All the actors are pretty bad, and the actress playing Mircalla -- the most awful name I've ever heard -- makes the most hilarious faces. The story is nothing original and quite boring, the main character falling in love with the vampire woman immediately was laughably bad.

1001-2000

The Fourth Kind (2009) 6/10 (ranked #1453)
A psychologist finds evidence that her patients are being abducted by aliens. Annabelle (2014) 4/10 (ranked #1308)
A pregnant couple suspect a doll may be possessed when strange occurences begin to happen. Since The Conjuring films didn't particularly impress me, this spin-off was easy to ignore but with flavo's recommendation for its sequel, it was finally time to watch it. It's exactly what you'd expect for what it is and it's not enjoyable at all. The acting is bad, the story is all over the place, it's never scary or tense and when it almost gets it right, it throws a lame-ass jump scare in your face that obliterates anything good it had going for it. There were a few moments that could've been used to turn this into a really cool psychological thriller about postpartum depression and it decided to just be a pointless generic crappy piece of nothing.

Beyond the Canon

Acolytes (2008) 6/10 (ranked #2154, appears on 4 lists)

Elle (2016) 6/10 (ranked #7188, appears on 1 list)
After being raped by a masked man in her own home, a successful video game developer tries to uncover his identity. So many rape films lately, but this one was really interesting and for the first half of the film I thought this might be a new favourite. Unfortunately, the really strong characters and a great performance from Huppert are wasted when the story turns to poop later on. It was starting to take a really interesting turn when all the men started to seem like suspects but it didn't really go that route and the tension was snapped away. The first flashback is one of the most powerful moments I've seen in a film in a long time though. Not horror either.

100% once again.

435. Man Made Monster (1941)
★ ★
Promising start with stars Lon Chaney Jr., Lionel Atwill and Samuel S. Hinds. Plot involving Chaney given an overdose of electrical energy is well beneath their abilities, hardly any thought put into it. The effect of glowing, electrified Chaney quickly goes from cool to silly. Much better is the makeup showing the effects of the electrical overdose on his face.

436. The Mummy’s Tomb (1942)
★ ★
Universal had some classic monster movies, but most of the collection from this era use their icons to kill time and recycle plots. This runs one-hour and starts with a 10-minute recap of the last film, before presenting the most routine scenes of The Mummy lurking around at night, scaring people with his shadow.

437. Weird Woman (1944)
★ ★ ½
This one’s different. Voodoo and superstition are at play, and if they could’ve afforded to up the atmosphere it might’ve helped me get past the slapped together storytelling.

438. The Maze (1953)
★ ★ ½
Engaged woman is mysteriously dumped and she forces her way to the man’s estate to find out why. From there it’s some pretty good mystery and atmosphere leading to… I’ll just say the guy is under a curse, but not something simple like a Wolfman. The conditions of his curse are more imaginative, more extreme and hard to not laugh at when revealed. Possibly worth finding on YouTube to see what I’m talking about.

439. The Creature Walks Among Us (1956)
★ ★
Starts as a retread of Black Lagoon then presents an interesting idea about doctors operating on The Creature so that his lungs breathe air instead of water. That turns out to only be an excuse to reveal a much cheaper-looking suit and turn this into a reheated Frankenstein story.

440. The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism (1966)
★ ★
Christopher Lee brings a lot of charisma to the beginning and end of the film, but this loose adaptation of the Poe story looks cheap and rushed. Nothing seems particularly clever or thought out, including the potentially horrific opening where Lee is quartered by horses – the limbs detach like they’re Velcro – and the supposedly elaborate torture chamber, with traps hidden in secret passages.

441. The Return of Count Yorga (1971)
★ ★
The suburban vampire is back. Despite a poster selling Christopher Lee, Yorga is actually played by someone better resembling Ray Liotta. There’s a sense they were going more for fun this time, but there’s little sense of Yorga getting closer or further away from his master plan. One of the earliest horror films to pump up the sound mix and score, including a cheap jump scare. Also one of those annoying films where someone suggests it’s the work of a vampire and everyone laughs at them until it’s too late.

442. Haunted (1995)
★ ★
Based on a 1988 novel by James Herbert, though you might’ve guessed the material was a century older by how familiar it feels. As creaky as the doors in this over-lit gothic mansion. Extremely light on scary moments or violence, but gets the R Rating because of a high amount of nudity.

443. Tales from the Hood (1995)
★ ★ ★ - Okay
Cheesy but effective because the five stories have strong roots in real black problems. Gang violence, police brutality, racism and domestic abuse manage some social points as well as comic book style horror that reminds me of Creepshow. First episode is perhaps best, with some great blending of fantasy and graffiti, while the last suffers from jamming the black-on-black violent message down our throats with actual and staged news clips and photos.

I did the initial push chronologically so that it became more of an overview of the evolution of the genre. That way the bad films still had some value.

You still have...
X the Unknown (1956). I don't know how you are about the Quatermass type British films, but this is one of those.
The Mad Magician (1954). Vincent Price on one of his better days.

100% once again.

Noice! I watched Return of Count Yorga yesterday and got back to 100% myself!

Now it's time to start working on TSZDT 1001-2000 again. I've got a couple other lists I'm kinda working on occasionally as well like The Bad Movie Bible and the Nightmare USA exploitation checlist.

Yea, not gonna lie. What you have left is not the cream of the crop...

Um, The Mask has a cool, crazy part in the middle but is kinda boring otherwise. The ending of Devil's Rain is ridiculously entertaining but is pretty damn boring up until then.
Nightmares is an ok 80's horror anthology and Torture Garden is an ok 60's Amicus horror anthology...

I say just buckle down and power through the rest. Then enjoy a sigh of relief when you finish the last one.

Yea I’m so much more interested in 1001+ and working through the recs, but I’m trying to just power through now and get the list done. I want to work on other things too, but I’m always so much happier with films when I just focus on horror, so that’s what I’m gonna do. Though it will make the horror challenge less special...

I’m looking around for some good books on horror as well, just wanna fill myself with horror.

Nightmare USA is a great book on 70's and 80's horror and exploitation I would definitely recommend. Stephen Thrower knows his stuff. I also had a lot of fun with Sleazoid Express which is probably the closest you can get to walking through time square amidst the grime and grindhouses in its heyday. Arrow Video has also released a series of little books, each one focusing on a different movie or director. The ones I've read of those are good as well. There's a ton of others too but that'll suffice for now.

I’ll check those out, thanks for the recs!

Fourteen left on the main list now (though I also need to watch the first Memento Mori film as well). I'm not a fan of pre-70s horror so working through the 'classic' stuff is a bit of a drag.

Main list

7. Gorgo (1961) 6/10 (ranked #715)
A giant sea monster is captured off the coast of Ireland by sailors who sell it to a circus in London, and its mother comes to find it. Monster movies like this generally don't work for me at all, with Cloverfield being the only one I'd call a favourite. Gorgo was one of the better ones, though it was still pretty mediocre. The 'twist' about it being a baby and having a mother coming to look for it, though it's been done before, helps make the monsters a little more neutral over villainous scary beasts that are just on a needless rampage (or a metaphor for the damages man makes on nature or whatever). There were some pretty cool shots of mist, fire and smoke, as well as not skimping out on shots of the destruction and chaos on the streets. That kid was annoying as hell though.

8. Audrey Rose (1977) 6/10 (ranked #786)
A man who lost his daughter in a car accident tries to convince a couple that their 11 year old daughter is the reincarnation of his deceased daughter. The idea is intriguing and it starts to build tension at the start, with Hopkins' stalking the kid, but as soon as the court case begins all that tension goes out the window. The case is too ridiculous to take seriously and makes the 'supernatural' going ons just seem really dumb in contrast. The girl's acting is also all over the place; she is awful most of the time, but pulls out a couple of surprises in the mirror scene and some of the screaming scenes. It's bit too melodramatic and it's never really ambiguous but also never really direct, and difficult to take seriously.

9. The Terror (1963) 5/10 (ranked #723)
After a lost French soldier is saved by a mysterious woman, he attempts to uncover her identity at a castle owned by an elderly Baron. After watching, it was no surprise to discover this film was largely improvised and mostly shot within a few days. It feels totally incoherent, which at times gives the film an eerie and detached feel, but doesn't really work and the exposition dumps don't help. It's slow, repetitive and hard to get involved with. It looks quite good though, and it's interesting to see a young Jack Nicholson - though his characters' awkward way of talking was weird.

10. The Mad Magician (1954) 6/10 (ranked #833)
An aspiring magician hopes to hit the big time with his latest invention but after his employer takes it from him he turns to murder. The plot is basic, simple and silly, and there's nothing particularly special about it in any way. What makes it work is mostly Vincent Price, who is really fun to watch and looks like such a regular dude here which makes him a bit more likable and sympathetic when he's pushed to his limit. All the other actors do an ok job in their roles and make it decent fun to watch. Could've been a bit better with less melodrama and more on gore, but it's just an easy, light B-movie.

11. The Return of Count Yorga (1971) 5/10 (ranked #680)
Count Yorga falls in love with a teacher at a nearby orphange and aims to make her his vampire bride. Though I remember liking the first Yorga film, I have no memory of it now. Yorga is actually a pretty cool pompous douche vampire character and Quarry plays him well. It was hard to tell if some of the humour was intentional or not, and tonally it was hard to tell what it was trying to do. Some moments really worked, some were really bad, and others were questionable. The vampire zombie women were so lifeless and dopey, and that 'home invasion' scene could've been pretty brutal if they were more menacing.

12. X the Unknown (1956) 4/10 (ranked #905)
A radioactive mud-creature escapes from the center of the Earth and terrorizes a Scottish village. This feels like it goes for twice its actual length, it's a real drag. Keeping the monster off-screen until later in the film is cool, until it's revealed as a really disappointing lump of mud. The special effects are good for the time and still retain a kind of charm, though are kind of funny now. And the mud, while it looks alright, has no 'character' of its own. It had elements of a decent slasher/monster movie (The Blob which would do it all a bit better), but it was too talky and just bland.

13. Notre-Dame de Paris (1956) 4/10 (ranked #465)
A gypsy girl is accused of witchcraft and a hunchback tries to protect her. Geez, this was a tough slog. Having not been interested in any portrayal of this story so far, it's not really surprising this was impossible to enjoy. Esmeralda's character was not in the slightest bit charming or interesting, and she sometimes seemed like a bitch and then would be saving people's lives and she was just awful. The hunchback just being a bit disfigured instead of a monster was kind of nice, but he seemed like a weird drunk and he was difficult to buy as a nice guy too.

14. Torture Garden (1967) 5/10 (ranked #800)
An anthology telling the unlucky futures of some fairground visitors to Dr Diabolo's attraction. All of the stories were kind of fun, they were just done in a really 'meh' way. The first one, about a wealthy man trying to get his inheritance, was too randomly 'supernatural' and the cat wasn't creepy enough. The second, about an aspirating actress trying to make it, had the potential to be an early 'They Live' but didn't really go far enough with its concept. The third, about a possessed piano, had a really unlikable lead character but I couldn't tell if it was on purpose or if she was just a 'nice girl'. I wish the piano had a little more 'character', though the scene where it moves is cool. The final story, about a Poe collector, was pretty uninspired and I'm not a fan of Poe-based stories in general, so this one did nothing for me.

15. Body Parts (1991) 6/10 (ranked #998)
After losing his arm in an accident, a psychologist receives an arm transplant from a murderer. This is a decent, yet typically cheesy 90s-style, horror with a ridiculous plot. Jeff Fahey is likable enough, Duncan is pretty unnerving as his ambitious doctor, though some of the other characters are weird and annoying (particularly his lame-ass bitch of a wife. What is it with 90s thrillers and crappy wives?). Though it manages to be entertaining, it doesn't do anything new from other films with this kind of plot. It never really explores the potential psychological aspect and the supernatural aspect is not creepy or 'believable' enough to elevate it above average.

16. The Return of Dracula (1958) 4/10 (ranked #909)
Count Dracula takes on the identity of a man he murders and moves in with his distant family. Well, this was a real WTF entry in TSZDT that really gave out 'The Room' vibes. This could possibly be enjoyed as a 'so bad it's good' film, but despite a few chuckles it's kind of so bad it's bad. The dialogue is hilariously stupid, such as this wonderful interaction:

- We just came back from a funeral, it was very depressing.
- Sorry, I hope it was no-one close.
- No, a little girl we all knew and loved.

The acting is similarly terrible, particularly from the overly dramatic mother (also the bearer of the first and third lines above), with Norma Eberhardt's Rachel being wooden and dull. Lederer is a pretty lame Dracula and comes off as a weird creep.

Your ratings are actually a little higher than mine on a couple of these interestingly enough. Especially Audrey Rose which I just found incredibly tedious and creepy in all the wrong ways.
