116. Vredens dag / Day of Wrath (1943) #673 on TSZDT
Beautiful and haunting cinematography, amazing performance from Lisbeth Movin, but the slow pace and long conversations hurt it. Although it deals with a witch hunt, this is definitely not horror and does not belong on this list.

117. Riget / The Kingdom (1994) Season 2, Episode 1

118. Roadgames (1981) #872 on TSZDT
Good performances Keach and Curtis keep this moving along, and towards the end things get tense, with a nailbiting climax. The effect of the tension is balanced out by a series of events that feel contrived. Despite the presence of a serial killer, the horror elements are light, and this is more in the mould of a Hitchcockian thriller than a horror.
6/10 (maybe 7 at a push)

Image

119. Chakushin ari / One Missed Call (2003) #655 on TSZDT
Miike does a decent job of directing, but the script feels like a rehash of overfamiliar J-Horror tropes, especially from Ringu, which also used the device of a haunted phone call. The events that accompany the haunting are overcomplicated and the ending is a long messy runaround in an abandoned apartment building. The best bit comes when one of the victims decides to go on a TV reality show at her appointed time of doom rather than wait around for her death in a creepy location.

80. Lake Placid
The David E. Kelly script is occasionally funny in a TV sit-com way, and there's way too much good cast, but every time the story combines its giant crocodile with either a helicopter or Betty White, it shows itself to be no better than Sharknado.

81. House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Geoffrey Rush is pretty cool at the beginning playing an eccentric, American, thrill ride creator. The demo of a new coaster has some clever, scary ideas you wish modern technology could match. The rest of the film removes the clever and never goes beyond the ideas phase. Nothing is properly developed. There's just a bit of this and a bit of that and the technology of the time could not do a proper smokey beast that changes form, let alone a creepy or scary one. I like all the cast but Chris Kattan, and I hope they had fun making the movie. It isn't much fun to watch.

82. Doctor X (1932)
I was hugely let down by Mystery of the Wax Museum, made by many of the same people including director Michael Curtiz, producer Hal B. Wallis and actors Fay Wray and Lionel Atwill. This film includes Lee Tracy, who is to comedy what Jim Carry is to comedy today, relentless and unfunny. Until the end this plays more like a black comedy and it takes forever to introduce everyone and get going. The film doesn't get mired in the logic problems of Wax Museum. Curtiz wisely leaves reality behind quickly which is great for the early Technicolor look and the freaky climax which contains strong horror imagery.

83. The Black Room (1935)
Most notable for Boris Karloff's dual performance as twin brothers. One innocent and the other evil. There's a prophecy about the innocent one killing his twin that manages to come true in an unsurprisingly surprise way. Though I don't seek him out, I like Karloff and don't think of him as a bad or limited actor, so watching his range here isn't much of an eye-opener. The plodding story is a bit of an eye-closer.

84. Dracula's Daughter (1935)
This direct sequel to the 1931 Dracula starts with police apprehending Van Helsing who stands over the body of his defeated foe. Van Helsing could stay alive with an insanity plea, but wishes to prove himself sane even though it would make him a murderer. This very interesting idea is never developed because there's the mysterious woman who is the daughter of Dracula and looks to a psychiatrist in the hope her urges can be cured. Unlike Count Dracula, when she gives in to the urge, her victim is of the same sex, giving the scene lesbian overtones. The vampire also acts her age while on the attack, giving the scene the even more overt feel of a sexual predator corrupting a young innocent. None of this is properly developed or explored either, but it's all very intriguing. Not the formula Universal monster movie I was expecting, though the moments of comedy are terrible.

85. Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)
From the director of many Sherlock Holmes films, and featuring a supporting cast pulled from that series including Lastrade (Dennis Hoey) again playing a clueless homicide Inspector. There's initial promise, and the way the story combines the two horror icons into the same universe makes sense, but as it stretches logic to create an inevitable monster vs. monster showdown I started wishing for more of a team-up where the two take on all the stupid villagers. As I feared, the climactic fight looks like a bad wrestling match. Atmospheric potential squandered.

86. Wake in Fright (1971) (Ted Kotcheff, #724)
Kind of the perfect advertisement as to why you should definitely not visit the outback of Australia. Gary Bond comes across an odd bunch of characters when he wants to take a plane to Sydney. The review at the TSZDT website mentions "Kafkaesque" and I'd agree. Not so much horror in the classical sense but the kangaroo hunting scenes are haunting and the whole thing in the end just starts to feel like a giant nightmare.

87. Ringu (1998) (Hideo Nakata, #45)
It's been ten or twelve years since I last watched this and it was definitely much scarier at the time. I don't know whether it's my age, the film's age or the fact that I wasn't really watching a lot of horror back then. The image of Sadako crawling out of the tv and then the screenshot above used to almost haunt me. Also watched the two sequels, Rasen, the Korean version and the Japanese tv version from 1995. They were all less intriguing than this one. Up next: the American remake and its sequel, plus Sadako 3D and its sequel.

86. Phantom of the Opera (1943)
One of the more well-known films from the Universal Horror Collection and starring Claude Rains as The Phantom. It's one of the more beautiful movies I've ever seen, with an attention to the color palette that shames most other films. Unfortunately, it's light on the Phantom and heavy with Opera, more of a Musical than a Horror film, and I still have yet to see an Opera scene I'm glad I sat through. A real shame because I liked the use of shadows and images of the Phantom running through the opera house with his thick cape trailing behind.

87. Son of Dracula (1943)
The Universal Monster movies are all very similar, leaving you to either admire the small differences or rebuke the entire body of work. Universal is to slavish to the mythology, so instead of some genuine scares or creeps we get all the expected imagery. This Dracula tale moves to the Gothic south, but tells the same exact story as Dracula. Lon Chaney Jr. plays the Count this time. I like his tortured soul performance as The Wolfman, but he's too genteel and low-key to fill the shoes of the charismatic Count. Louise Allbritton steals the film as a dark-haired vampy belle fascinated by death.

88. House of Frankenstein (1944)
The promise of a Universal monster mash-up gave me hope for awhile, with mad scientist Boris Karloff tying together Dracula (John Carradine), the Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.) and Franenstein's Monster. Plus there's Sig Ruman and I believe every actor who ever played Moriarty in the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films. How quickly it all falls apart. Dracula is only the warm-up story, concluding before Karloff ever gets to castle Frankenstein. The story beats are business as usual, with a particularly abrupt ending. I'm left thinking the actors were the only ones who cared.

89. Isle of the Dead (1945)
Mark Robson's horror films (The Seventh Victim, Ghost Ship) always have a strong psychological pull, enough to be more Noir and less Horror than their titles suggest. This one is less successful, but it's good to see Karloff in a more original story. He gets one of his strongest characters, an overly-rigid general caught up in an outbreak of the plague, a foe he doesn't know how to fight. The disease kills indiscriminately, fanning the flames of supernatural superstition. Unfortunately, the storytelling isn't as clear as it should be, blunting the horror until the final 15 minutes, at which point it manages some solid hair-raising atmosphere.

90. House of Dracula (1945)
The last of the Universal Monster Movies before Abbott and Costello joined in is one of the dumbest, with some nonsense about spore gas that can cure The Wolfman while turning the helpful doctor into a Mr. Hyde-ish type. I wonder why Universal kept all their icons separated, with Dracula only appearing in the beginning and The Frankenstein Monster not coming to life until the climax. I continue to be most entertained by Lon Chaney Jr. as Wolfman and he's the bulk of the film, so that's good, but the franchise is running on fumes at this point.

91. The Queen of Spades (1949)
The film is a favorite of Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson, and while I see why, it's such a rigid and cold film. The direction is classy and elegant with occasional moments of deep shadow or heightened cinematic fantasy. There are scenes that reminded me of Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice, with music and imagery setting the world free... before the story fastened everything down like a tight corset.

This is the 2nd version of Queen of Spades I've watched recently. Already a thin story, this longer version is better paced because we get to live more in the moments. The heartbreaking hustle by Anton Walbrook's soldier is allowed to slide into the moral whirlpool instead of having to dive in with the silent version's "and then this happened". It's a film where the Queen of Spades story is what drags the film down. It's another version of The Monkey's Paw or any such deal with the devil and the Rosemary's Baby pulp doesn't suit the packaging, which is closer to Hitchcock's Rebecca.

92. The White Reindeer (1952)
Finnish story of witchcraft and vampirism. One of those films that's steeped in the culture of a rarely-filmed group, a fairy tale with documentary aspects. That's not going to satisfy many horror junkies, but the unique art direction and foreign customs definitely has its own appeal.

93. It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955)
One of those Ray Harryhausen creature features, and the effects are impressive. Many shots of the giant octopus are as good as the Kracken from Pirates: Dead Man's Chest. The human characters though are as bad as I've seen them for this type of film. They're only occasionally laughable, mostly just dull.

Italian arthouse vampire film, shot by Mario Bava, who took over as director at some point. Widescreen photography is expert, but I never cared about the story, aside from it being sexist, equating vampirism with a woman's need to remain young and beautiful so that men will continue to be around her.

95. El Vampiro (1957)
Mexican vampire story that works because it sticks to the basics and does very little that's illogical or stupid. For a time I thought this was going to be another remake of Dracula. The film's problem is that it doesn't offer a unique spin on the material, but this is a well-shot and well acted no-nonsense vampire tale.

96. Lake of the Dead (1958)
aka. De dødes tjern
Lots of good atmosphere surrounding this haunted lake next to a cabin in the woods, but like it ghost it drifts around looking spooky while never building towards anything. The bland ending only confirms this as a film with mood but no point.

97. Black Pit of Dr. M (1959)
aka. Misterios de ultratumba
A dying doctor tries to keep his promise of showing his best friend the afterlife, or maybe it's something more like life after death. Things get complicated. From the director of El Vampiro, this one is certainly more original but the writing is often unsure, unfocused or trying too hard to be clever. The great gothic atmosphere is still there, but the film needed half the twists and twice the scares.

Powerful and realistic, this film has a compelling documentary feel as a compelling documentary feel as it follows a psychotic killer released from prison. The horror is brief and brutal when it occurs but effective. The scope of the movie is small and I feel that it could have benefitted from more depth than just following a killing spree, but it does extremely well with the material it uses.

121. Valkoinen peura (1952) #957 on TSZDT
Some striking images and shots of the snowbound landscapes, but the shots didn't seem to tell the story in a coherent manner. All too often, important information would be left out, making things unneccessarily confusing.

122. Body Snatchers (1993) #841 on TSZDT
Transferring the setting to a military base probably seemed like a good idea, but because the conformity of the military is something that's chosen I don't think the body snatcher metaphor holds the same resonance and paranoia as it did for communism and communist witch hunts. Meg Tilly is really good in this and should have been used more than she was. Anwar is also good, but most of the male actors give dull performances and the little boy is truly awful, barely reacting to the horrific things he sees. There are a few scenes where Ferrara gets a good scare so it's quite watchable.

123. I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) #684 on TSZDT
I liked the cheesy 50s dialogue (especially the ridiculous stuff spouted by the mad scientist) and the werewolf makeup. Didn't like the lack of action or the quick and convenient ending.

98. Mill of the Stone Women (1960)
A mash-up of House of Wax and Eyes Without a Face, this Italian film isn't giallo, but it makes as much sense as Italian films so often do. Some creepy atmosphere and haunting, beautiful women, but I would gladly trade disorienting visuals for some narrative coherence.

99. Blood and Roses (1960)
I had doubt that in the modern age Roger Vadim’s 60s style of sexually suggestive storytelling could have any fans, but of course every filmmaker has their fans. It’s a beautifully shot film with some great colors, but for me Vadim is like watching late night cable – Showtime After Hours for my generation – with all the good stuff replaced by more talking about the good stuff.

Oh, this is about vampires and lesbian vampires. Or maybe it’s about insanity. (Open-ended narrative.) Vadim fans write about psychological complexity and sexual neurosis, but I couldn’t get past Vadim teasing the audience into thinking they might see a breast.

100. The Awful Dr. Orlof (1962)
I never knew there were so many versions of this type of story, a doctor who kidnaps women, using their skin to fix his daughter’s horribly scarred face. The mad doctor here has a henchman with a repulsive (but fake enough looking) bulging eye. The director Jess Franco, is known for sleazy exploitation, hardcore nudity and a lot of bad films. This is early work so it’s more a dull, average chiller with the occasional interesting shot and a strange, noisy soundtrack that reminded me of Eraserhead.

101. The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963)
aka. The Evil Eye
Regarded as the first Italian giallo, I cannot get past the sub-genre’s general disdain for narrative coherence. For directors like Mario Bava (who made this) a good moment of sensation or shock is worth any cost. Better to surprise, even if that surprise flies in the face of everything else. That said, this one’s a pretty good thriller in the Hitchcock mode with some great use of placing actors in the frame very deep or incredibly close. (Not close-ups of faces but things like arms and hands.)

102. The Sadist (1963)
Three people find themselves trapped in a junkyard with the title character and his giggly girlfriend. An important step in the evolution of Horror, the launch point for torture porn and bleaker horror fare. Also a really bad film, though it is largely well-reviewed. Cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond makes his debut and the super low-budget film, which is professionally photographed, but everything hinges on the performance by Arch Hall Jr. as the title character and I thought he was terrible. Other reviews compare him to Perkins in Psycho and Ann Savage in Detour. *shrug*

103. The Day of the Triffids (1963)
Silly nonsense about most of the world going blind just in time for an invasion by killer plants. Cult film is most interesting for casting Howard Keel in a non-musical role. The effects are overall lousy, the story is obviously condensed from longer source material. In this case a book, which differs vastly from this film. I can see where this might work given more time to develop logic. (The story's been remade twice as a mini-series.) Abrupt ending is a joke here too, but there are many laughs to be found throughout. That said, this is much blander a good/bad time than The Giant Claw.

104. Curse of the Mushroom People (1963)
a.k.a. Matango
Japanese weirdness, but maybe not so much if you’ve seen Hausu, Tetsuo and Naked Lunch. It’s a silly creature feature along the lines of Land of the Lost, but with some serious undertones from a country living through atomic fallout and urban crowding. You can see the mushrooms as a metaphor for something like drug addiction or you can just enjoy the group dynamics as they face off against a creature like The Thing, (not the cool 80s Thing, but the carrot-looking 50s version.)

105. Planet of the Vampires — a.k.a. Terrore nello spazio (1965)
Even for Mario Bava, this is amazingly bad. The costumes and cardboard sets are laughable, with colorful monitors and control panels that only add to the cheap-looking atmosphere. The plot is nonsensical and camp. I can’t tell if the comedy is deliberate cheese or if the straight-faced performances and direction that is so amateur just came out that way. It’s like watching a youtube video by a director with ambitious vision and no idea how to express it. This has a cult reputation, but I imagine Gods of Egypt is at about the same level.

106. The Blood Suckers — a.k.a. Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965)
Horror omnibus with Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough and Donald Sutherland. Less silly than others of this type, but not scary either. Too generic despite the cast. The film’s biggest failure is the premise. The stories are predicted futures, but each contains surprises that would go differently now that the characters know what to expect. Trying to explain this away just widens the plot hole.

107. At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1964)
First film in a series about an atheist gravedigger named Zé (aka. Coffin Joe), who uses the town’s religious and supernatural beliefs for his personal gain. The bearded creep has the particular look of a franchise character: a large top hat, black cape, really long fingernails and an odd pipe. Written and directed by star José Mojica Marins, the film is over-stuffed with under-developed ideas and largely amateur level in all three of Marins’ jobs, but there is something interesting about this character when he dares the spirit world to come and get him. The climactic sequence is genuinely spooky.

108. Castle of Blood (1964)
Haunted house film that’s as much psychological as spooky. The script is a cut above the norm with events from the past setting the table for the ghostly encounters in the present. The dual time lines would appeal to a number of modern filmmakers. I’m certain this was an influence on Crimson Peak. However, the story here becomes less clear as it goes and the acting more melodramatic. Barbara Steele has amazing presence and she’s the spitting image of Krysten Ritter.

109. The Kiss of the Vampire (1963)
Comfort food from Hammer. No name stars here, but some original ideas, which is so rare when it comes to vampires. Some things don’t work, but I appreciate the effort. Best scenes may be the opening where a solemn funeral becomes the spot for a vampire staking and the finale featuring an army of vampire bats. (It gets very Snakes on a Plane.) Would’ve been better with a stronger cast.

110. The Whip and the Body - a.k.a.La frusta e il corpo (1963)
More Mario Bava. I am 0 for 10 with him. You think even I would pack it in by now, but I often don’t realize it’s Bava until too late. It’s not that he’s relentlessly terrible, just continually disappointing. This time, even his bold use of color – often his saving grace – appears to be phoned in. Same with Christopher Lee’s performance, and that’s just sad. The score is the same four bars humped over and over.

124. Il tuo vizio è una stanza chiusa e solo io ne ho la chiave / Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key / Excite Me (1972) #753 on TSZDT
Hmm, I'm not sure about this one. It benefits and suffers from the whole gamut of giallo tropes: it's stylish and beautiful to look at but often luxuriates in the visuals at the expense of pace, and it has a rambling plot which ties itself in knots at the end but makes it interestingly unpredictable. I liked it more than Martino's All the Colours of the Dark, but not as much as Torso or The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh. Fenech's presence may just push it to a 6/10.

125. Raising Cain (1992) #858 on TSZDT
De Palma directs with his usual stylishness, but his steals from Hitchcock's Psycho are even more blatant than usual. The script needed to be better, because while it has plenty of good twists it takes a while for the film to gel (the second half is much better than the first) and there are some moments where characters act like idiots. Worth watching, but it's a lesser film from De Palma and a lesser madman performance from Lithgow.

126. Cosa avete fatto a Solange? / What Have You Done to Solange? / Terror in the Woods (1972) #535 on TSZDT
This is one the sleaziest and most salacious giallos, full of leering shots of "schoolgirl" nudity, and a disturbing sexual murder method. As usual the cinematography is beautiful and the giallo tropes are present and correct, with depravity and corruption affecting all the characters. The way the plot is set up is excellent, with some good twists, but the second half is too much of a standard procedural. I'd say this is one of the better of the "second tier" giallos: a solid film worth watching, but due to the way the plot resolves itself, it's not among the greats.

The worm attacks are amusing, and often striking in their use of hundreds of thousands of worms, but it starts slowly and doesn't run up the violence and craziness high enough.

128. Los ojos de Julia / Julia's Eyes (2010) #922 on TSZDT
Stylishly shot, and with some effective tension and scary moments, even though it's more of a thriller than it is a horror (several steals from Hitchcock and Wait Until Dark). There's a conceit of not showing people's faces to put across the effects of blindness, and it works well and doesn't feel like a gimmick. It suffers from a serious case of twist addiction, with new twists seeming to arrive every few minutes. It would be OK if they were all logical, but a lot of them defy credulity and coincidence. The cops and doctors also need to be idiots to make the plot work, but that's par for the course in these sort of films.

129. La tarantola dal ventre nero / Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971) #975 on TSZDT
Visuals are good and the Morricone score is excellent, but the film ended up being only a mid-tier giallo. It makes sense, but making sense is overrated, and once the red herrings have all been taken away, the mystery solution is ordinary and disappointing. I liked the sadism of the murders, but the execution of these was lacking. Giannini seemed uninterested in his role as the hero.

130. Paranormal Activity 2 (2010) #610 on TSZDT
The first was OK, but this is awful, with barely anything happening for most of the running time, a few plot points lazily dropped in, poor scares and stupid characters.

131. Auch Zwerge haben klein angefangen / Even Dwarfs Started Small (1970) #901 on TSZDT
Unpleasant to watch, this isn't so much a film as a practical joke on the viewer: a film to be endured and a grim rebuke to the idea of entertaining chaos. The irrational is portrayed as disturbing and unpleasant via lengthy repetition and a series of loosely connected scenes of chaos which range from banal to weird. While I was watching it I thought I didn't understand what Herzog was going for. When I'd finished it I felt like I did understand what he was going for, and I admire it, but I don't like it. I also wouldn't class it as horror.

132. Just Before Dawn (1981) #640 on TSZDT
Minor but interesting low-budget 80s slasher. With it's themes of civilised teens coming into contact with the hostility of hillbillies in the untamed wilds and finding they have to embrace savagery, it plays like Friday the 13th by way of Deliverance. The film takes advantage of some impressive locations and has a script that bothers to do a bit of characterisation of the teens, but the pretty scenery can't distract from the slow pace and scenes that of the teens messing about that do nothing but fill up time. A few more murders and more gore could have made this a stand-out slasher.

78. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998) 6/10
79. Due occhi diabolici / Two Evil Eyes (1990) Two episodes of an aborted TV show transformed into a two-story anthology. Romero's entry is mediocre, but Argento's entry is better and has some nice gore and a good performance from Keitel. 5/10
80. Baghead (2008) Annoying and boring indie film, with a pathetic ending. 2/10
81. El barón del terror (1962) Terrible B-movie with a few laughs from the silly monster. 3/10
82. House of the Long Shadows (1983) The biggest stars in horror come together as the supporting cast for the supremely smug and untalented Desi Arnaz Jr in a boring adaptation of a creaky stage play. To cap it all there are two awful twists that both ruin the story. 2/10
83. Deadly Blessing (1981) Craven ensures quality cinematography and a few scares, but the story is a mish-mash of different types of film that never seems sure what it wants to be. 4/10
84. Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) PWS Anderson has a good eye for video-game-like compositions, but the plot is a random selection of action scenes. 4/10
85. Incubo sulla città contaminata / Nightmare City (1980) Lots of good zombie attacks but the film was a patchwork of loosely connected events and characters with a bad ending. 4/10
86. De lift / Goin' Up (1983) Captures the flavour of everyday Dutch life, but too talky. 4/10
87. The Ambulance (1990) Snappy dialogue, good stunts and Eric Roberts. Has plot holes and is not really a horror. 5/10
88. La ville des pirates / City of Pirates (1983) Beautiful and melancholic, though loses its way in the middle. Not horror. 6/10
89. Shrooms (2007) Bad Irish attempt at duplicating the American slasher formula. Fulfils the bare minimum requirements for a slasher. 3/10

111. The Reptile (1966)
Not a lot of monster, but that’s probably for the best in the end because the actors are given a lot of story and what little of the monster we do see is undercut by the cheesy make-up. Contrastly, the makeup that shows the spreading infection from the Reptile’s bite is done very well.

112. Frankenstein Created Woman (1967)
Hammer with Peter Cushing once again playing the mad doctor. Like the monster, this outing is stitched together from bits of different stories. Nothing that stands out, but the expected Hammer class is in effect. Watching other countries go down fast on heaps of blood and sex, it's interesting to see the British be just as effective with a more suggestive approach.

113. This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse (1967)
Follow up to At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul has a slightly bigger budget, more time for writer/director/star Written and directed by star José Mojica Marins to develop those ideas, and a much more willing leap into all out weirdness, which makes this a more watchable experience. I now understand the cult around this character and am interested in watching more. Marins is the undisciplined punk relative of Jodorowsky. His technicolor vision of Hell is one of the great scenes of this Challange. You can find it online, but it plays much better in context.

114. Quatermass and the Pit (1967)
The foundation of the Quatermass films is ingenious, constantly shifting their preposterous plots while fighting each supernatural threat with science. The films seem more intelligent than others in the genre because the characters convincingly come off as smart. The constant twists unfold the story like a grand mystery. The end result is something like a solid episode of Doctor Who or The X-Files. Of the series (which can be experienced in any order), I have a special fondness for the pulp thrills of 1957’s Enemy From Space, but this one has the best mystery, the best effects and the best Quatermass.

115. Murder Party (2007)
First feature by writer/director Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room). Unlike Saulnier's thrillers, this is a comedy, though it features some of his original flair in regards to the presentation of violence. There are shocks in both the suddenness of death and the level of detail of some of the wounds. Besides that and the welcome presence of Macon Blair, there's very little that reminds me of Saulnier's later work.

Though the premise suggests torture porn, the story focuses on a group dynamic and not at all about pain infllcited on the guest. Having no money, Saulnier was smart to keep the location simple and the camera moves constantly to make the film more cinematic than usual first efforts. It also gives the film a manic energy I don't find in his more deliberate, tightly-controlled follow-ups.

116. Honeymoon (2014)
A micro-budget horror that plays mostly like a character drama about young love and the unease of establishing foundational trust. The two stars do a remarkable job bringing to life the initial excitements and hesitations of a newly married couple, which is key to the horror when one of them starts acting strangely. The pacing is un-rushed, which sets a nice feeling of the film taking place in the moment, like we're eavesdropping on an actual honeymoon. Of course, you know going in this is a horror film and there are small unusual moments that eventually flip the whole blissful vacation into a nightmare full of mystery.

117. As Above, So Below (2014)
I watch a lot of horror films and I've certainly seen films worse than this, but there's something about the arrogance and cockiness of these characters I found particularly grating. They break laws, disregard rules and constantly put lives in danger because they believe what they're doing is more important. Then the moment something goes bad they immediately get angry with each other. It's the kind of film where they break through to a forbidden place and don't hesitate to approach someone who appears to be in a trance that breathes heavy.

118. Housebound (2014)
New Zealand doesn't get nearly enough recognition for their wild plots and equally wild shifts of tone. South Korea is best known for it, but NZ have a wild style all their own. Peter Jackson described his own similar films as 'Splatstick' and that applies here too. It can be more serious (District 9) or less than successful (Black Sheep), but they has the same creative plotting as S. Korean thrillers, if not their more serious tone. This one starts with the novel idea of someone under house arrest in a haunted house and just piles on the crazy from there. By the end it doesn't even seem like the same film I started with, which is something I encourage but it's also somewhat too ADD. If it were a little less clever and more committed to the characters and the horror, I might've given it more than a mild recommendation.

119. Starry Eyes (2014)
For a while, this walks side-by-side with The Neon Demon. While lacking Refn's uber-style, it tells a grungy version of the cost of being famous and how there are beautiful women who will sell their soul to achieve it, who are convinced they must sell their soul. It turns out Neon Demon's quick nod to horror is the preferred path for such material. Starry Eyes goes into full on slasher territory and loses all credibility, becoming more interested in the presentation of bloody violence than anything horrific or suspenseful. Any character development becomes a neglected idea.

120. Mama (2013)
I don't know which key creative person had final say, but they didn't have confidence in the director at all. Every scare is bumped up with a shriek and a pounding thud. You don't even have a chance to be frightened on your own with the sound mix smacking you in the head every time. There's also the problem of Mama's character design, which is more silly than scary thanks to a long twisted face and too much weightless CGI. Jessica Chastain's talent comes through, but she is largely wasted.

121. Maniac (2012)
Maniac is largely shot in first person point-of-view, but not in a strict style like Hardcore Harry. The filmmaking is very smart about using edits to jump ahead in time, or warp the frame using effects in a way that simulates Wood's feelings of not being in control of his actions. Sometimes, the camera jumps outside completely, looking at the killer completely disconnected from what he is doing. The effect doesn't come off as a cheat or as showing off and it shows director Franck Khalfoun clearly understands the material. The effects are definitely serving the story here, and it creates a film you want to talk about afterwards, especially in terms of the way you are made to partake in the violence.

122. The Bay (2012)
The premise is intriguing, an environmental apocalypse that creates millions of dead fish, thousands of dead birds and now threatens the local human population. The footage is in the vein of End of Watch or Chronicle, because it comes from a variety of sources the story is able to cover the disaster from a number of viewpoints and locations. Barry Levinson comes up with a couple of big scares, but I'm surprised he went as far as he did with the body horror. (Mark this as one of the worst films to eat a meal to.) The gore is surprisingly graphic and the level of medical detail is uncomfortably icky. I like that Levinson's not making the same type of film over and over, but this doesn't come off like a comfortable fit. Actually, it's a lot like any other low-budget found footage horror you might see from an inexperienced director.

123. Citadel (2012)
More supernatural than I was expecting, but it's an interesting idea that's executed all wrong. The horror elements are frequently fumbled.

Formulaic and slow, but the creepy mansion adds atmosphere and there are a few moments of tension.

134. Paranormal Activity 3 (2011) #558 on TSZDT
The last of 17 found footage films on TSZDT. Slightly better than the second one because of some creepiness in the last few minutes. Otherwise it's long stretches of dullness and some weak scares.

135. Long Weekend (1978) #510 on TSZDT
Both characters are unpleasant and stupid, and Marcia is insufferable. They're supposed to be an unlikeable pair, but they're killing animals and arguing right from the beginning so the audience never has a chance to engage with them, and the animal attacks are too rare and brief to enjoy their torment. It's a well-made film though, that captures the atmosphere of the uncanny, with good cinematography of the beach and a slow drip of increasingly sinister mysteries.

136. The Hamiltons (2006) #897 on TSZDT
Amateurish. The idea is interesting, as it seems to be aiming for a thoughtful examination of family relationships twinned with bleak horror, but it misses the mark badly with an stupid and insipid script, ugly camerawork/editing and poor acting. The guy playing the eldest brother is probably the worst actor I've seen in a film this month; he can't even stand in a scene without looking awkward. Some incest and splashes of gore stopped me hating it.

137. Willard (1971) #838 on TSZDT
Excellent cast but poorly directed. Fun performances are balanced out by bland camera shots and a lack of atmosphere. The remake had better visuals and rat wrangling/effects, but (with the exception of Crispin Glover) not as good a cast, so they're about even. I might even give the edge to the remake.

138. Alligator (1980) #501 on TSZDT
Creature-feature shlock but put together in an enjoyable fashion. The plot is stupid and formulaic, but the cheesy dialogue and acting was funny and tons of people die in an enjoyable way: munched by the alligator, flattened by the alligator, blowing themselves up trying to kill the alligator... It's also fast-paced, so there's not much downtime between alligator attacks.

139. Dead & Breakfast (2004) #818 on TSZDT
A chaotic horror comedy that performs impressively on the horror and action front with lots of gore and and a genuine uncertainty about who is going to survive, but has a curiously misplaced sense of humour. The jokes are pitched somewhere between spoof and sitcom territory, but tend to fall flat as though the punchline never arrived. There's also some incongruous songs which were mainly useful in making the plot clear. In a desperate attempt to save the comedy, sitcom-style pizzicato strings play intrusively to signal "funny" conversations. It's rare that I think a failed comedy film suceeds as a bad movie, because by definition it can't be unintentionally funny, but this one ploughs along at such a fast rate, and with enough good zombie action that it is fun despite being a comedy desert. A cast of reliable performers help.

A traditional English ghost mystery given the Disney family film touch. There is some good work with photography and lighting to create a cosy but spooky atmosphere, but the story was not compelling, with milquetoast scares and a lack of threat hurting my interest in the proceedings. Reading up on the production history, I can't place the blame on the director because apparently there was constant meddling by Disney execs at script and filming stages to tone down aspects that were perceived to be too scary. There are also two alternate endings: one of which was unfinished, and one that was released but was pulled after being "laughed off screen". All three endings have their own problems, I don't feel that any of them were better or worse than each other.

141. Bloody Birthday (1981) #945 on TSZDT
Fun, but throwaway, addition to the "evil kids" subgenre. Some fun terror caused by the kids, despite there not being much of a narrative or the horror not being particularly horrific. I partiularly liked the all-out attack of the finale.

142. Alone in the Dark (1982) #662 on TSZDT
It's slow at times, but a top-notch cast for the maniacs and the presence of Donald Pleasance's amusingly naive psychiatrist makes it enjoyable to watch, as well as a couple of stand-out scenes of horror/tension, though not enough to make this a classic. The script also wends its way through several horror genres, which makes it quite interesting to see unfold, despite there being one late twist that was obvious to me from the moment they set it up.

143. The Wizard of Gore (1970) #852 on TSZDT
Amateurish splatter. The slow pace and repetitive nature of the gore wizardry completely killed my initial amusement.

144. Shock Waves / Almost Human (1977) #586 on TSZDT
Not enough Carradine or Cushing. They movie is reasonably good when they are onscreen, but they only appear briefly and the remaining film is nondescript characters running around on an island chased by slow-moving zombies.

Padded with inane high school drama, disco dancing and one drawn-out stalking scene that goes on for ten minutes. I also had difficulty telling apart the actors playing Jamie Lee Curtis' boyfriend and brother; for a brief scene I thought there was some sort of incest subplot going on.

146. Yi boh lai beng duk / Ebola Syndrome (1996) #893 on TSZDT
Hong Kong Category III gross-out that would have benefitted from more narrative drive. As it is, it seems to stand in the shadow of Untold Story which succeeded in being both sicker and more compelling. It occupies a strange position in between gross-out comedy and serious horror where events aren't really funny, but are performed in a broad comic manner. A decent watch for gore fans, there's definitely entertainment in the parade of cannibalism, rape and lethal disease, even if it's not genuine amusement.

147. The Last Wave (1977) #805 on TSZDT
Slow and eerie, and while that does contribute to an eerie atmosphere, but I would have preferred more apocalyptic visions and weirdness and less of Richard Chamberlain staring at rain. The high quality of the acting, cinematography and singularity of vision are enough to make me recommend this. I don't feel this is a horror film, but more of a contemplative mystery drama in the vein of Picnic at Hanging Rock.

148. Parents (1989) #677 on TSZDT
Well directed, with a good mix between sinster foreboding and the cosiness that the well-realised fifties setting provides. Its theme of syngenesophobia is explored in an interesting way with suspense and mystery, and there's also a subtle satire on the corruption behind the facade of fifties innocence (not just domestically but in the US foreign policy of the time, as the father's job as a developer of defoliants makes explicit). Parents is much better at hinting at the horror than it is at showing it; the film loses its way at the ending, which makes sense but feels more flat and abrupt than the rest of the film deserved. Good fifties soundtrack too.

149. La frusta e il corpo / The Whip and the Body (1963) #576 on TSZDT
It looks and sounds great, but the story was slow and relied heavily on hoary ghost story cliches. Two of the best things that the film has going for it: Christopher Lee and the sadomasochism are limited in their appearance and they weren't able to get Lee to dub himself, so we lose his marvellous bass voice. I liked the idea of using a ghost story to explore sadomasochistic psychology, but I didn't find the realisation to be satisfactory.

150.C.H.U.D. (1984) #767 on TSZDT
This had a strangely complex narrative web of characters who all get involved with the CHUDs (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers). It's not well-written enough to make all the leaping around between different storylines work, but at least they attempted something different. Other than that, this is a fairly by-the-numbers monster movie, with a bunch of plot holes and not enough horror action until the last act. The CHUD effects are good.

124. The Watcher in the Woods (1980)
As you might imagine, horror and Disney do not work well together, but there's a fair amount of spooky atmosphere, mostly from shots of something watching the characters from deep inside the woods. It gets to the point where things feel scary enough - like in the screenshot - and if there was made by another studio, they would be able to push out a few more genuine terrors. In fact, the film's troubled production is because director John Hough (Twins of Evil, Escape to Witch Mountain) was too good at his job and the studio got cold feet during filming and started dialing everything back to a more family-friendly level.

125. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969)
Largely decent Hammer Horror because it lets Peter Cushing do anything and everything and he delivers one of his most commanding performances, with intelligence, charisma and a small bit of knowing comedy. If only the rest of the cast could match him. Also, there’s a terribly out of place rape scene. It comes out of nowhere and has no lasting effect on any of the characters, because it was added later against the wishes of the filmmakers. Wonderfully gothic finale that I wish was longer.

126. Horrors of Malformed Men (1969)
Like walking into Mulholland Drive having never seen a David Lynch film before, and I still honestly don't have a solid opinion about it. (I don't think I've been this unsure since I first watched Barton Fink.) I recognize some brilliance, and also a few things that don't work. Mostly my problem is the plot, which lurches down the path with as much logic as Dawn of Justice, but going against this film for lacking logic is like going against Eraserhead for the same.

127. I Drink Your Blood (1970)
A Grindhouse film made by people with some knowledge of how movies work, but it’s still thoroughly exploitation, which is my least favorite type of horror. The plot is initially reminiscent of Last House on the Left, but with a lot less rape and a novel twist. The good family takes revenge on the evil hippies by infecting their food with rabies. The contamination spreads, turning the film into a zombie movie, the fast moving 28 Days Later type.

It starts off well enough: Matheson did some good work in scripting the realistic reactions of people to a series of vampire killings. Eventually it slips into standard vampire film cliche with the lone hero hunting down the monster. The fact it looks like such a typical 70s TV episode is also a problem: the film doesn't always have enough going on to distract from this, although there are a couple of scenes of vampire attack action that are exciting.

152. Burnt Offerings (1976) #461 on TSZDT
Bored and annoyed me. The characters all have to act unrealistically in order for the plot to work. Incomprehensibly, this beat Carrie and The Omen to win the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film in 1976. Stephen King loves the book, so the similarities with The Shining stand out strongly but just make this one even more pointless.

153. Nadja (1994) #992 on TSZDT
When it works it's cool in a 90s fashion. The ennui of the vampiric existence works well when analogised with the disaffectedness of the NY bohemian set. It was interesting to watch, but a couple of problems stop me thinking too highly of this: firstly the overuse of an effect that combines pixellation with low shutter speed - I'm not sure if this is supposed to represent how the vampires perceive the world, but it's not used as a first-person viewpoint, simply applied to long sections of the film. Secondly, a lot of the film is long conversations about boredom and existence, with not enough attention paid to plot or action, and when the action does arrive it seems lacking in impact. Acting from Löwensohn and Fonda is entertaining, there's a good flashback sequence that makes use of old Bela Lugosi footage, and a fun cameo from David Lynch.

154. Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam / The Golem (1920) #288 on TSZDT
Beautiful expressionist set design and special effects, I particularly enjoyed the demon-summoning scene. But the film does feel sluggish and has an unsatisfying outcome to the story.
Spoiler: click to toggleShow
The golem's rampage is brief, and the guy who brought it to life just asks the rabbi's daughter not to tell anybody he did it. Huh? It just killed her lover, at least two other people and burned down her house.
It felt as though it was an important part of film history, but has aged badly.

155. 13 Ghosts / Thirteen Ghosts (1960) #792 on TSZDT
I've never been much of a William Castle fan, and this is one of his weaker gimmick-films. It moves along at a fair pace and it has camp entertainment value so it's not boring, but the ghosts don't get to do much, and we don't learn much about them. The characterisation and threat of the weird ghosts was actually one thing the remake did better, but that failed in different ways.

128. Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny & Girly (1970)
Annoying family of immature, immoral cuckoos runs its one joke – murder is just a game - into the ground fast and then keeps going until it achieves some amount of interest from its unbending one-note performances.

129. Scream and Scream Again (1970)
An indestructible serial killer who behaves like a vampire created by a mad scientist funded by Neo-Nazis, and unlike the last film this one isn’t aiming for laughs. Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, a brief cameo by Peter Cushing and Michael Gothard (The Devils) as the club-cruising killer kept me from hating this more.

130. Mark of the Devil (1970)
So glad this batch was spread out over a week. This is an exploitation knock-off of The Witchfinder General, and I didn’t like that film either. Uses the real-life horror of spoiled men with power who declare witchcraft to gain land and sexual favors, but is mostly just an excuse to show numerous scenes of graphic torture. What it lacks in not having Vincent Price it makes up for with Udo Kier.

131. Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970)
Hammer to the rescue, delivering the goods when the Marathon is on a downturn. Stretching for a sequel, this ends up one of the more inspired ideas for a Dracula film. I wasn’t impressed with young Christopher Lee’s first Dracula performances, but he owns the part now. Too bad he’s still just supporting the rest of the cast and often has to compete with Hammer’s heaving bosoms. Two common Hammer negatives lower the grade here: Powerful Dracula becomes awfully vulnerable and easy to defeat in the last five minutes and the end credits come up in a terrible hurry.

132. Hatchet for the Honeymoon (1970)
Calling this Top 5 Bava isn’t saying much. Mostly a bland early variation of American Psycho that becomes an even more bland ghost story with a largely expected ending. I don’t think Bava is always bad, he just only has a few good qualities most of the time and hasn’t made a single good film. Not giving up

133. The Wizard of Gore (1970)
As bloody and amateurish as Herschell Gordon Lewis is, there's an innocence and joy to him that makes his work easier to like than it should be. The Ed Wood of Grindhouse.

134. Even Dwarfs Started Small (1970)
I give this latitude knowing this is Herzog so there must be meaning to the allegory and not just the rough early work of somebody creating and then capturing a societal microcosm collapsing into chaos. Never mind that this doesn’t really count as Horror, it’s too experimental for me as a feature-length movie. I do like one reading I found about the cast being dwarfs because social order has mutated to unmanageable proportions, and I love the image of the car forever moving in an endless circle.

156. Et mourir de plaisir / Blood and Roses (1960) #607 on TSZDT
A loose adaptation of LeFanu's Carmilla story with the supernatural qualities made ambiguous, and a focus on psychology. The realisation of this is very pretty, with a couple of standout scenes: a striking nightime scene where Carmilla discovers her ancestor's tomb (see screenshot) and a surreal dream sequence. These two scenes are the only times that it fully delivers on the psychological depth and fairytale horror qualities that it's aiming for. The rest of the film is pleasant but often focusses on banalities. I watched the European version (reading the Wikipedia page, the US version edits it down and features narration to remove the ambiguity).

157. La chute de la maison Usher / The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) #339 on TSZDT
Amazing cinematography and a dark and chilly atmosphere for the whole running time. There are a series of unique bravura shots that capture a feeling of melancholy and sadness: that screenshot of candles superimposed over a tree-lined road for a funeral procession is one that sticks with me. There's not much else going on, but still an excellent piece of cinema, despite some modelwork for the house that could have been better. I didn't think much of the Rolande de Candé soundtrack that I listened to it with: it fits the slow scenes, but at the climax when it should be getting faster it's just repeating the same piece of music again.
7/10 (might be higher if I saw it with a better score)

158. The Day of the Triffids / Invasion of the Triffids (1963) #679 on TSZDT
The triffids have a camp value which makes their attacks enjoyable and the film has a feeling of brisk movement between scenearios, but otherwise this was a bad adaptation that never managed to convey the horror of the world going blind and falling into chaos. The decision to junk most of the book's plot and add in a lot of sci-fi cliches is probably to blame for this.

159. Kim Bok-nam salinsageonui jeonmal / Bedevilled (2010) #785 on TSZDT
It has a languid pace and a grim outlook but this is a well-told and high-quality vengeance tale typical of Korean cinema, with impressive acting and camerawork and a satisfyingly bloody denouement. As a Korean horror morality tale about selflessness, it has now been outclassed by Train to Busan, and as an addition to the gory Korean vengeance genre this is in the shadow of Park Chan-wook's Vengeance trilogy and I Saw the Devil but this has interesting things about it in its own right.

160. Das Wachsfigurenkabinett / Waxworks (1924) #854 on TSZDT
A silent anthology film, featuring tales about three tyrannical figures: Sultan Harun Al-Rashid, Ivan the Terrible and Jack the Ripper. This was entertaining and has impressive German expressionist set design. While it doesn't feature as many stylish shots as some other silents, there are still a many standout moments, such as multiple reflections of a man in the facets of a gem, an expressionist Baghdad all curves and steps, and the multiple exposures in the Jack the Ripper tale. The stories are flimsy, but generally acceptable. What prevents me from according a higher recommendation to the film, or classing it as horror is that the three tales are respectively a comedy, a drama, and a horror, and they are unbalanced in terms of length (40 mins, 37 mins and 6 mins) so that horror only makes up 7% of the runtime. The Jack the Ripper bit was easily the best, so to have it snatched away so quickly felt disappointing.

161. Bijitâ Q / Visitor Q (2001) #758 on TSZDT
Sick, unpleasant and completely fascinating. The weird amorality and perverseness of the story it tells is in the manner of a moralistic family film, yet with filled with grotesque and harrowing events make it seem like it comes from a universe where morality is completely backwards. I feel like Miike is satirising the limited perspective and cosy happy endings of the family film genre. Its low-budget feel and digital aesthetic isn't the most pleasant to watch, but make the film seem like a home video gone wrong suits the subject matter and brings an immediacy and realism that's complemented by the performances.

135. Count Yorga, Vampire (1970)
Bringing vampires into the 1970s and Los Angeles, though it doesn’t get lost in period detail, playing out as a small town suburbia vampire story. This is refreshing, the acting is pretty good and I liked the PG-13 approach to sexuality, realizing that teasing can sometimes be more appealing than graphic nudity. The downside is there isn’t much to the film, with lots of sitting around and talking about vampires. It’s amazing to realize that because of cinema, books and plays most people already know more about vampires than most other subjects.

136. House of Dark Shadows (1970)
I was hoping I didn’t need deep knowledge of the Dark Shadows TV Series to follow this. All I can say is I’m glad I saw the Tim Burton movie. Even though I was still somewhat lost and confused, I could recognize the show was doing something different with vampires, playing down the gothic trappings and giving them real-world anxieties. Also, Joan Bennett has a small role and I’m always down for some Joan Bennett.

137. The Vampire Lovers (1970)
Somebody at Hammer said “lesbian vampire” and the whole room got excited. Too bad that was the end of inspiration. The usual Hammer film production values are there and there’s a lot of beauty for the male gaze to enjoy, but this is a really routine vampire film and not even that perverse about its subject matter.

138. The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971)
Another fine example of Folk Horror and probably the closest film to The Wicker Man yet, (which means fans of The VVitch should put this on their Watchlist.) I'm going to have to revisit this because it took me a while to understand that the random, unfocused plot is a deliberate decision. Because I'm such a fan of classic structure, I was having particular trouble finding the story thread, but once I gave into the messiness, the buildup of each small, strange event snowballed into a major apocalypse on the small village where the story takes place.

139. Scars of Dracula (1970)
Hammer is starting to lower their standards. There are some surprising moments of brutality, but aside from Christopher Lee, the acting is a lower quality and the situations often teeter on unintentionally funny, especially when it involves Dracula’s ability to command some silly-looking bats.

140. Blade of the Ripper (1971)
A Good giallo film?!? And from the director of the incompetent Torso. Embraces the gimmicky plots of Italian Horror with a twist followed by a double surprise reveal and then another double twist. Obviously, plot logic can’t possibly survive all these turnabouts, but there’s a fun to the boldness of it. Fast moving thriller that’s mostly a series of suspense set-pieces in the back half. Film is also gleefully sleazy, which helps in this rare instance.

141. Strange Things Happen at Night (1971) — a.k.a. Le frisson des vampires
Jean Rollin walks the line between Horror and Softcore Porn. He’s visually more interesting than expected, but in the battle between telling a story and getting characters naked, storytelling doesn’t even put its hands up. They Shoot Zombies has 5 films by Rollin. I’m curious to know how he rates so highly.

162. La residencia / The Finishing School / The House That Screamed (1970) #515 on TSZDT
Some evocative gothic art direction and the ending is spooky, but the slow pace and lack of interesting things happening killed my enjoyment. It ends up feeling like a giallo-lite, but if it had been a giallo there would have been all the deaths, blood and nudity that this film is so coy about showing.

163. Rituals / The Creeper (1977) #880 on TSZDT
It's like Deliverance but not as good. Where Deliverance had something to say about cossetted city dwellers coming into contact with the savagery of the wilds, this has a fuzzier subtext about the Vietnam war turning people into killers. There is some decent tension, especially in the climactic fight, but for the most part it moves slowly and the killings happen offscreen. Interesting that this is halfway between the survival horror of Deliverance and the 80s slasher formula, both in the time it was produced and in the way its structured, so that it is a slasher with cast of middle-aged men rather than the cast of mixed-sex teens and twenty-somethings who populated the 80s slashers and it does make it a bit hard to tell the characters apart, as it's not well-written enough to make them all unique.

164. The House on Sorority Row / House of Evil (1983) #656 on TSZDT
A mostly unoriginal slasher: it doesn't take any risks and sticks closely to the slasher formula, with the deaths at regular intervals so the proceedings don't get boring. However that decision pays off in delivering an unmemorable but acceptable film. The one touch of innovation is that it has a cool last act where the final girl gets drugged and things become a bit surreal. Unusually this is a slasher with an all-female cast, and like Rituals suffers the problem it's hard to tell all the characters apart. By their failures in this area, these two films have impressed on me how the slasher formula reliance on stock characters allows easy character delineation without the need for detailed characterisation.

165. Riget / The Kingdom (1994) Season 2, Episode 2

166. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920) #411 on TSZDT
Good telling of the Jekyll and Hyde story with a brilliant dual performance from John Barrymore. When he's onscreen, and especially as Hyde, the film gets a lift. I liked the way the film mixed in Picture of Dorian Gray so that Jekyll's serum is not an attempt to purify his good self, but an attempt to experience evil without consequences. The camerawork lets it down, with the director seemed a bit loath to use close-ups, which meant that I initially missed how Hyde died and had to rewind it. Nice use of artwork on the intertitles too.

167. Rinne / Reincarnation (2005) #717 on TSZDT
Heavily influenced by The Shining, this incorporates lots of flashbacks and layers of reality with ghosts possessing, so it really needed a director skilled at clear storytelling. Unfortunately, that's not Takashi Shimizu's style. He tends to just concentrate on spooky set pieces (which are handled effectively here), so things become confusing, and Shimizu attempts to remedy this with some morphing effects to show who's possessing whom but that undermines the scariness.

Ah, but there's a lot of films that will fall off the bottom of TZDT1001-2000 and never appear again. By watching films that are unlikely to reenter (mostly bad recent films that were overrated and will be forgotten), it would be possible to build up points that people still on TSZDT will not have access to at the cost of enduring a lot of bad films.

I'm speeding up right now because I want to finish TSZDT by the end of the year, but I'll slow down after getting some of the easier checks on TZDT1001-2000. I estimate it will be about 7 years before I have both lists finished.

A man wakes up in a confined concrete space and endures a series of tormenting obstacles as he tries to navigate it. The best thing about it is the successful communication of pain and claustrophobia that the protagonist is experiencing. I don't feel the concept was explored as thoroughly as it could have been; the awkward 48 minute length feels like a loss of confidence in the subject and a brief scene showing "reality" near the end feels like a loss of confidence in the ambiguity. However, there's still plenty of scope for interpretation, and this remains a curious and intriguing work.

169. Il mulino delle donne di pietra / Mill of the Stone Women (1960) #868 on TSZDT
Some pleasant gothicness that makes good use of some misty Dutch canals, though the story is slow and creaky. This is made up for somewhat by an excellent climax. Some entertainingly hammy performances by the villains (and their dubbers) are balanced by some bland performances from the heroes.

171. The Cat and the Canary (1927) #396 on TSZDT
Excellent opening, with some beautiful lighting and atmosphere setting the mood and an interesting set-up for the mystery, but it starts to coast after the first appearance of the monster, about twenty minutes in, before pulling things back for an exciting all-action ending. Plenty of mildly amusing moments throughout, but there was a lot of unrealised potential for it to have been both funnier and scarier. There should also have been more characterisation so that I cared about the identity of the villain.

172. Marebito / The Stranger from Afar (2004) #960 on TSZDT
This is an OK film, but a remarkable achievement for the eight days it took to film it. There isn't enough cosmic horror on film, and this fusion of Lovecraft, Machen and Bulwer-Lytton is a worthy attempt to conjure up some of that fear. Unfortunately, the plot doesn't quite gel together: there's supposed to be some ambiguity over whether the protagonist is delusional or the events are really happening, but it gives too much confirmation to both possibilities, leading to bafflement. Despite this, there are scenes and events that are genuinely disturbing and nag at the mind with their sinister implications. With more time to work on this it might have felt less rushed and been more satisfying.

I'm marathoning TSZDT and hope to be done by next Summer. As for 1001-2000, I'll pick at it now and then but my next focus will probably be Noir.
