For Spiritually Significant plat:

After Life (Japan 98) - 7 to go

This sticks with me. The premise is that the dead come to a sort of way station where they are asked to choose one memory to take with them into eternity; all others will be erased. The place is staffed by those who couldn't or wouldn't choose. Hmm. Rather than lose so many memories, they help others sift through theirs so as to arrive at a deeper level. Not a bad way to spend eternity.

4. Barfi! (2012) - 1/10

The few scenes were obviously homages rather than plagiarism. But still, he's no Chaplin, Keaton, Kelly, and I think there was a Kitano scene too. Him doing the scenes just ended up being quite boring. Quite a few scenes was similar to The Notebook, and because of that this film had the same shitty melodrama. This being 2.5 hours made it even worse.

5. Maratonci trce pocasni krug [The Marathon Family] - 3/10

I guess it's the same as Who Sings Over There in a sense that I didn't feel like this was a mafia film, but it was still quite annoying.

I'm pretty sure the final three films (Süt kardesler, Çöpçüler krali, and Saban Oglu Saban) don't have subtitles, so unless you guys know of any I'm done with this comedy list. They all had Kemal Sunal too lol.

5. Maratonci trce pocasni krug [The Marathon Family] - 3/10
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

4. Des hommes et des dieux (2010) Xavier Beauvois (8/10)
5. War Horse (2011) Steven Spielberg (5/10)
6. A Separation (2011) Asghar Farhadi (7/10)

These three get me a plat on 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (It's my yearly redo, I've done it about 4 times due to the updates every year.)

Des hommes et des dieux was really good, did a good job of recreating a time and place convincingly and compellingly. The actors were all great.

A Separation was well conceived and directed, but some aspects felt a little bit whorish and facile, it was tugging on a couple of heartstrings a bit too hard for my taste. I also thought the film made the husband much more sympathetic than the wife. And the other couple's intentions were really messed up, so it was really hard to have any kind of sympathy for their plight. Especially the husband who was just an uneducated brute. No subtlety there. Having said all that, I'll admit that the film was entertaining and compelling.
Interesting article by Rosenbaum: http://www.jonathanrosenbaum.com/?p=28977

War Horse was a very mediocre Spielberg venture, I wish he had let Edward Zwick direct this one. It felt like a dumb American remake of Au hasard Balthazard with a horse. He did a nice job of stereotyping the entire European continent. Also the convention of French and Germans speaking with a stupid accent instead of their own language needs to DIE!!! Highly manipulative, the number of near deaths experience for the horse were highly annoying. Nice cinematography and production design though.

7. The World (2004) Jia Zhangke (JR: 75)

Ok, my next list currently contains a bunch of unobtainable titles, Rosenbaum's essential movies, but I will do my best. Currently there are 16 titles that I can absolutely not locate (well except if I'm willing to take a day trip to Paris to see Barrabas) and 1 without subtitles Amor de perdicao. That means I have 58 movies to watch before I have to sadly move on until further notice.

8. Porto da Minha Infância (2001) Manoel de Oliveira (7/10) (JR:74 to go)
9. Die Zweite Heimat - Chronik Einer Jugend: 1 - Die Zeit der ersten Lieder (1992) Edgar Reitz (8.5/10) (JR)

I decided to bite the bullet and tackle one of the biggest challenges ICM has to offer, Reitz' 26 hour epic. If you haven't seen part one than that's 40 hours for you. However I loved the first Heimat and so far this one is just as much of a winner. This one is composed of 13 movies of around two hours each. The first one centers around a young musician making the transition from his native village to the Grosstadt, Munich, to study music. It is extremely well observed and captures all the hope and romantic notions that come with the territory with great flair.

disappointing two to end on, but so it goes. It's all about the shiny platinum.

2. Kôchiyama Sôshun (Yamanaka, 1936) 5/10 - was probably missing some significance, but just didn't get into the plot or characters of this one.
3. Simon Killer (Campos, 2012) 5/10 - not sure why this particular film got onto MoC. it was quite stylish in look and had a great soundtrack but the lead character just isn't really compelling enough to carry the whole film. However, Mati Diop

I decided to kill 2 birds with one stone. IMDB's thriller and crime lists are now done.

6. Eskiya (1996) (Crime, Thriller) - 2/10

*insert post from the comment page for this film* The inside jokes there are certainly better than this film. Some shots are decent but it was very poorly written and acted.

The Minnelli episode from Three Loves, Mademoiselle, was really good. And the first segment which was like a mini red shoes was pretty good too. James Mason was great and Moira Shearer was made for Technicolor.

4. Eureka (Jap 2000)
Astonishing in a watching-the-grass-grow sort of way. A long slow film that totally held my interest.
Spiritually significant 4/8Show
1. Wandarâfuru raifu / After life (Japan 98)
2. Make way for tomorrow (37)
3. Fiddler on the roof (71)
4. Eureka (Jap 2000)
Meanwhile I picked up two IMDb plats without trying, but no matter - these too shall pass.

This was a great string of movies, the Rosenbaum picks keep delivering big time.

Die Zweite Heimat is very easily one of the greatest cinematic accomplishments of all time, a work of incredible ambition, subtlety, insight, depth, knowledge and wisdom. Simply beautiful, a towering achievement.

FilmTotaal top 250 is my next goal (just one left for tomorrow, Fassbinder too)

7. High Fidelity (2000) - 3/10

Indie bullshit with Jack Black doing easily his most annoying performance.

8. The Scarlet Empress (1934) - 7/10

Great performances, sets, and camerawork. Marlene in the first 30 minutes was so wide eyed O_O

9. Garden State (2004) - 1/10

I should have listened to Kas. I could say that it's the usual quirky indie bullshit, but this film is a lot more annoying than that. Not only that, but it felt so try-hard too. Although I did end up laughing a lot in one scene because it reminded me of this:

Platinums Obtained: 4Show
IMDB Comedy: Done (all with subs)Show
1. Ko to tamo peva [Who Sings Over There] (1980) - 4/10
2. Munnabhai M.B.B.S. (2003) - 1/10
3. Hababam sinifi tatilde (1978) - 1/10
4. Barfi! (2012) - 1/10
5. Maratonci trce pocasni krug [The Marathon Family] - 3/10
IMDB Thriller and Crime: DoneShow
6. Eskiya (1996) (Crime, Thriller) - 2/10
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.
