Ok going to start with a relatively easy one...this will be my very first platinum and a draw for my favorite decade with the 80s (maybe a slight advantage to the 70s even).

The OFFICIAL iCheckMovies.com 1970s list, 30 coming in, 20 to go for platinum.

1. Flåklypa Grand Prix/Pinchcliffe Grand Prix (Caprino, 1975) 7.5/10 This is a gem; astounding that this was done without the help of CGI. I watched the English dubbed version and the voice acting was quite good as well.

Make that 19 to go...moving on.

Ryebass, sorry to be a spoilsport, but plats on the IMDb lists are notoriously unstable as the lists are updated 2x a week.

Duly noted 3eyes; didn't realize those decade lists were based on imdb.com. I will continue and see how it goes. I will be perfectly content with simply hitting platinum for even a fleeting moment lol.

Meanwhile...

2. Barry Lyndon (Kubrick, 1975) 7.5/10 Someone noted elsewhere that this film is essentially a classic painting set in motion (or something to that effect) and I wholeheartedly agree; unfortunately (and I love Kubrick intensely), the narrative lacks some oomph for me (I realize that for many the understated nature of the plot is a strength) hence the modest score.

3. Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes Aguirre, Wrath of God (Herzog, 1972) 7.5/10

Very effective at capturing the abject lot of a group of colonists, and what seems like an almost complete lack of humanity, and the kind of delusional world-view necessary to support it. My only critique is that the characters read as one-dimensional as they appear on the page of the monk's journal (perhaps the goal).

Soviet Mel Brooks (love Mel Brooks); just feel the jokes, both obvious and nuanced, would be funnier were I a Russian speaker etc. Still an interesting and fun ride.

Beautiful to look at; intensely morbid and eerie in ways most formal 'horror' fails to achieve.

9. Zerkalo The Mirror (Tarkovsky, 1975) 8.5/10

Breathtaking and haunting; what strikes me is that not a single frame or millimeter of film is extraneous but, rather, dense with meaning. Having said all of that, I must admit that I have only a whiff of a clue as to what the film is about. As impenetrable as any dense piece of music upon first or even second listening...I will have to revisit this at some point.

10. Dersu Uzala (Kurosawa, 1975) 6.5/10

It could be that I watched this over several days (stay-at-home Dad to a 2 year old boy), but this never roped me in. The setting was interesting and novel, but the story felt a bit familiar and 'Disney' (granted this is likely because later film was influenced by this work rather than the other way around).

Solid existential psychological drama, a la Allen but with absolutely zero room for levity; loved the many mentions of various piano pieces and their composers.

14. Angst essen Seele auf Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Fassbinder, 1974) 8/10

This film had been done prior, and certainly has been done since, but never quite like this; there is nothing Hollywood about this couple, not whatsoever, and that gives their relationship a funky charm that I couldn't resist.

15. Dawn of the Dead (Romero, 1978) 6.5/10

This is hard to judge in an honest fashion because I'm so smitten with the nostalgia associated with the 70's shopping mall setting: just glorious. That being said, this is some of the worst writing, acting, and choreography ever witnessed; I will say this for it, though, it's a welcome break from The Walking Dead, which takes itself far too seriously. A fun romp?

17. Stroszek (Herzog, 1977) 7.5/10

I noticed on the contemporary movie poster for this flick that it quotes a reviewer as calling this 'terrifically funny' etc., but I found little to chuckle at; I suppose the last ten minutes are a severely nihilistic rendition of the battered man and his true position in the scheme of things, despite all the formalities to the contrary. Definitely NOT Borat lol.

18. La Nuit Americaine Day For Night (Truffaut, 1973) 7.5/10

A fascinating series of 'is that really how they do that?' moments (like the little window set created solely for the shot that looks from window to window, or just the dependence upon studio sets in general); the caprices off camera are as fraught with drama as those in front. A fun movie, and Truffaut is such a confident and compelling presence.

At long last, I have finished off the Schneider 1001 YMSBYD.

I'll have to think about which list I may want to try and finish next.

Oh, I thought I already a made a post here about this but it seems I didn't. Anyway, I've started to work on the Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Pictures - Winners list recently.. I'll log my progress here.

1. Kolya (1996) - Pretty generic but not bad. Checked all usual checkboxes. Glad it wasn't sentimental. 6.8

2. Pelle the Conqueror (1987) - Had "The Tree of Wooden Clogs" vibe. Max was amazing. Liked the small sub plots. Didn't feel boring despite the lengthy runtime. 7

3. The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970) - My first color de Sica I guess. Nice film. Bit predictable though. Ending was very powerful. 6.9

4. Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (1978) - Surprisingly good absurdist comedy. Never thought Academy would approve of such plot. Like to explore this director. 7.2

19. Le fantôme de la liberté (Buñuel, 1974) 5/10

There were some clever bits (creepy guy giving young girls pictures of...indulgent architecture? hee hee), but overall felt like a disjoint collection of absurdities without any point (and not quite funny enough to forgive this).

Also, just noted as I was previously warned, the list has changed with a Pink Floyd movie suddenly taking position number 5? No clue how this list (dis)functions, but that really doesn't make any sense to me? I was expecting number 50 to be most likely to fall off/be replaced. So, still 2 more to go.

20. Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii (Maben, 1972) 6.5/10

The first 15 minutes or so are awesome, powerful stuff; ultra-cool setting (perhaps a tad pretentious I admit) and some great driving rock once things get rolling. BUT, there is this long-winded evolving soundscape thing that takes up most of the middle that had me checking the clock far too often. That bit may have been mind-blowing at the time, but not so much in retrospect. I can't fathom this film's inclusion on this list?!

21. Cet obscur objet du désir (Bunuel, 1977) 7.5/10

This is fun, funny, and clever. Rey is fantastic. Two stunning actresses. Embarrassingly, and this is no lie, it didn't fully occur to me until about 20 minutes short of the end that there were two entirely different actresses playing the same role.

My first Platinum, albeit likely to be short-lived given the volatility of this list (inexplicable given it seems to be THE OFFICIAL 1970's list on icheckmovies.com).

I'm giving it a go on the IMDB top 250 first, but it might take some time :whistling:
Having platinum once is fine for this challenge and I'll deal with updated, unchecked moves after. I don't like giving scores so I'll go with a  or

10. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) - 6.8. Sophia Loren was a bomb here. Also this is my first encounter with Mastroianni's comic roles and he exceled in every bit.
11. Antonia (1995) - 6.7. Another of those pleasant and harmless films with a bit overdose of feminism.
12. Black and White in Color (1976) - 6.8. Very good satire. Some of the portions were hilarious.
13. Les dimanches de Ville d'Avray (1962) - 7.4. The forum mafia film lived up to its hype.
14. Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970) - 7.1. What a background score by the Legend!! elevated the film by couple of notches.

1. The Great Escape
Didnt care that much for the things happening in the camp/prison but once the escape itself started I was very thrilled and enjoyed it a lot. Overall very fun movie to watch.

2. La Battaglia di Algeri
Didn't really interest me that much, but I don't know why. The bombing sequence with the women was really good though

3. Le salaire de la peur
Amazing movie from start to the end, and yes I did like the first 40 minutes of the film. I like how they established the living conditions of these people to make it more believeable for them to voulenteer for this dangerous job.

4. The Best Years of Our Lives
Incredible film. Loved the acting and screenplay. Most of the movies I've seen from the 40s (nearly all) suffer from a type of language and body language I don't like, like "overacting" or a stage play. I really can't get into that if its supposed to be a drama, but this movie had very believeable acting making it feel so realistic. I went into this thinking the runtime was very long, but the movie was so enjoyable that it didn't feel long at all.

5. Ben-hur
I had very low expectations for this from people saying its too long and boring, but I really liked this movie. Everything looked amazing and was well made, until
Spoiler: click to toggleShow
he started to look for his mother and sister. I would have liked it better if they had died instead because I disliked the ending with the Jesus part.
I barely noticed the lenthy runtime

15. Son of Saul (2015) - 6.8 - Camera work which follows him as a shadow really increased the tension and made me empathize with him
16. A Man and a Woman (1966) - 7.4.. Jean-Louis Trintignant can lift any film a level above. Nice romantic film and the BGM was excellent.
17. Madame Rosa (1977) - 6.9... I haven't seen Simone Signoret this graceful and haven't liked her more in any of her earlier films. She was amazing. Especially in the scene where she pretends to be confused between two kids.
18. Karakter (1997) - 6.7.. Nice film portraying estranged relationship with father. never felt boring despite nothing much interesting happens.
19. Jigokumon (1953) - 6.7.. Pretty colors and some below par acting. With the initial narrating thought it was going to be an epic action film. Could have been better had it been one, as the brief sword fighting at the beginning was choreographed well. Nevertheless, a good film.

Saw "Z" last night and secured my Platinum for Thriller 😀

Saw Enter the Void a few months ago that secured my first ever Platinum, which was for FilmTotaal top 100

As for imdb top 250 which I started on here, I got down to 12 movies and then the bollywood invasion happened pushing me up to 20 . I have no intentions of watching all those.

20. The Walls of Malapaga - 6.9 . Jean Gabin is born to play these kind of roles
21. Closely Watched Trains - 6.6 . Not upto my expectation and comedy also ddid not click with me but good Railway Station movie nonetheless
22. The Tin Drum - 7.2 . Nice!
23. Mediterraneo - 6.6 . Could not get much more feel good fantasy than this. I mean, in the middle of WWII, soldiers get to enjoy nice island with no enemy and free food and beautiful girl. Hmm.
24. Indochine - 6.2 . Bit long and not much interesting
25. The Counterfeiters - 7.4 . Never knew about this part of the concentration camp. A fine film.
26. In a Better World - 6.4 . Could have been lot better. Child actors have given fine performances.
