After this year's update, I had 10 unchecked new entries, and now only 4 remain unchecked.
Unfortunately, Gamlet is the only one that really worth to enter the list.

It's disappointed that Battle of Chile does not live to hype. There should be more Latin American films in TSPDT 1000GFs and I'm glad that two of the new entries are Chilean, but I can't see anything special in Battle of Chile. Surely it is important in Latin American cinema but in terms of quality it is poorly made, and the camera work is awful.

The other new entries are so-so. Still, Airplane has some funny moments, and Scary Movies or other parody movies might not exist without the birth of Airplane, and Stephen Chow stole some ideas from it in A Chinese Odyssey.

And David Lynch has too many films on the list. I love his works but TPFWWM is a weak one.

1. Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me
2. Battle of Chile Part 2
3. Planet of Apes
4. Mauvais sang
5. Airplane
6. Gamlet

7. The Unbearable Lightness of Being
8. Ghostbuster
9. Rocky Horror Picture Show
10. Doomed Love (I doubt if I could complete it within this year due to the lack of the sub)

I hope you've watched it on Blu-ray (or BD-rip). This film is mind-blowingly stunning in HD.

As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty (2000) Jonas Mekas (10/10)

Mekas spends his time explaining himself throughout the film, but he never apologizes mind you, far from it. It's a declaration of intent, which goes as much for this film, as for anything else he's done. "I don't make films, I film." he says at some point. Earlier he muses, "I'm not a filmmaker, I'm a filmer." "I just need to film, I film for the ecstasy of filming."

I do not doubt his sincerity, but I will have to firmly disagree. (I once bought Mekas a beer and told the bartender that he was a great filmmaker, I now realize that he might have taken that the wrong way.) This is a man who's spent his life preserving film, thinking about film, writing about film, and showing films to others, as much as he's spent it filming. Whether he likes it or not, he's a filmmaker. The way he frames shots, uses light, the way he chooses what to film, or not to film. His careful, and poetic editing is reminiscent of Dovzhenko, and he clearly thinks about that stage at the time of filming, even if he only edits his footage 20, or 30 years after the fact.
What he means, I think, is that he would be content to simply film for himself, the way Salinger was apparently satisfied to simply write for himself in his latter years. It is probably for that reason that he explains throughout that these images mean everything to him, even if they mean nothing to you. It is not the fear of the filmmaker to be misunderstood, but simply a way to communicate his intentions. Of course his hope, which he makes clear at a certain point, is that these images, these memories, will echo our own. Because the film functions as a long reminiscence of years long gone, of a father's memories, of a husband's memories. Even though there is no room for sadness, only happiness and beauty, the film is a melancholic, romantic and bittersweet journey. It sure is beautiful.

P.S. Thank you to my cat Watson for staying by my shoulders, the entire movie. It made all that awesome cat footage all the better.

21 to go.

Moi, un noir (1958) Jean Rouch (5/10)

Nicely shot, very cool colors. The film was shot without sound on 16 mm, to give the filmmakers and protagonists the freedom to do what they wanted. That freedom is palpable and is really the best thing about the film. The problem is that the post-sync dub is done in such a carefree and amateurish fashion, that it pretty much ruins the film's positive aspects.

Interestingly enough, the success of the film and especially the post-synch dub -- which is an unsuccessful blend of poor lip-sync, narration, and audio commentary -- is what inspired the French New Wave, and specifically Godard for À bout de souffle, to shoot their films with the freedom that post-sync and 16 mm cameras offer. So while it's a groundbreaking and historically important film, Moi, un noir is a film I would only recommend to film historians.

20 films left to go.

177. Back to the Future
178. Rocky Horror Picture Show

Almost finish all new entries this year. The only one left is the unsubbed Doomed Love.
And The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Ghostbusters are all terrible films, which I hope they would only exist in this year's list and disappear next year.

On the other hand, La Roue is a true masterpiece. Look forward to Napoleon.

Yeah, I don't like any of those.
Unbearable Lightness -- always disliked this film.
Ghostbusters -- very funny in its day (for me as a kid at least), but just quite dated now.
Rocky Horror -- Watching this by oneself and judging it as a film is like judging a carnival by walking through it at night when the lights are off and no one's there.

My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

Thanks, just the motivation I needed to watch a seven hour portuguese mini-series.

If I were to summarise it in one word, that word would be dreary. Enjoy!

Why?
Because of the film or because of the sub?

I download all 6 parts and I'll watch it next weekend. Not a fan of Oliveira so I have no expectation.

Great, I mean I have loved some Oliveira films, but I've also been bored silly. So we shall see.

Arrebato (1979) Iván Zulueta (6.5/10)

I think the film had a cool premise, although I'm not entirely sure what the premise was. There are some pretty striking moments in the film and the mood is fun at times, but it's overly long and drags and drags and drags. The ending was good though. I think part of the problem is that Zulueta doesn't have the cinematic talent to back up his ambition. Some serious editing could have helped too, about 30 minutes could easily go.

Malu tianshi (1937) Muzhi Yuan (8/10)

Very charming film, a bit clunky at times, but it more than makes up for it. It does a pretty good job of avoiding pathos too.

18 films left to go.

Cairo Station (aka The Iron Gate)(Bab el hadid)(Chahine, 1958) -- Chahine is quite good in an unexpected lead role for a director to take on. The film is somewhat interesting in terms of its historical-cultural context, and the direction is occasionally worthy, but mostly the film feels slight and a tad plodding. The female lead is also over the top and annoying without any interesting qualities that I could discern.

Last update was in November 2014 Oo
Since then I've gone from 560 to 633 but, in addition to some phases of barely and film viewing, I've focused mcuh more on obscure films :)

Now I decided I could work on TSPDT a bit more active again.

Watched in 2016:
279. Walkabout 1971
280. The Man Who Fell to Earth 1976
281. Menschen am Sonntag 1930 — a.k.a. People on Sunday
282. MASH 1970
283. Steamboat Bill, Jr. 1928
284. Moartea domnului Lazarescu 2005 — a.k.a. The Death of Mr. Lazarescu
285. Marnie 1964
286. D'Est 1993 — a.k.a. From the East
Current recommendation: Mutter Küsters' Fahrt zum Himmel (1975)

Woah, it's been a long time since I was on here last and yet I've hardly watched any TSPDT, so by coming here and logging the very few I have seen I hope it will kick start me on this challenge. One day I shall conquer them all but for now here's the latest to be added to the list.

#680 - Harakiri (Kobayashi)
#681 - Marketa Lazarova (Vlacil)
#682 - The Wild Child (Truffaut)
#683 - The Man Who Fell to Earth (Roeg)
#684 - Rosetta (Dardenne)
#685 - The Red Circle (Melville)

TSPDT has had an update since my last entry so my total number is really #684, so I lost a film in the past year but it could be worse.

Anyway of the films I did see Harakiri was just a pure treat from beginning to end and my first Kobayashi film (it won't be my last) Marketa Lazarova was a truly amazing experience and not one I was expecting, an epic in vision, scope and execution, totally recommended. Truffaut delights at every turn and The Wild Child proved to be another assured, restrained and poised piece of work, I'm slowly beginning to understand the beauty of Truffaut and he's becoming a firm favourite.

As a massive fan of both Roeg and Bowie I can honestly say I was left a little disappointed by The Man Who Fell to Earth, which I found a little opaque and stand offish for it's own good. Pretension has often been thrown at Roeg and for the first time I felt that criticism had some merit which was a shame for me as I adore a lot of his work. Anyway Rosetta helped to map the course the Dardenne's films have taken with one of their earlier works Rosetta showing why it won the Palme d'or and why they are rightly celebrated among some of the finer directors working today.

I'm a sucker for Melville and The Red Circle oozes style and panache, I can't get enough of those trench coats and drab colours, the cool jazz and existentialist angst. What a wonderful film.

Oh, I've been working on this list since finishing the 1001 BYD list in mid-May. I didn't realize there was a challenge for it.
