Finishing up the '40s and movin' into the '00s... With the aughts, I decided to do a decade of ridiculously titled movies. Dunno why. Just to keep things spicy, I guess.

Image
65. Cry of the Werewolf (Henry Levin, 1944)
This was a decent Universal-style werewolf picture made on a budget. It actually was more like Cat People than The Wolfman though with it's gypsies and curses and just the general B-picture feel. Not a bad film at all even though there are some improbably plot turns.

Image
66. The Phantom Speaks (John English, 1945)
This obscure B-picture has a decent if completely ridiculous, implausible premise. Basically we see a bad dude kill a stoolie and get the chair. Cut to a doctor exploring a hypothesis that schizophrenia isn't really a mental disorder but instead is the ghost of particularly willful dead people who take over the bodies of others. To prove his hypothesis, he allows the recently dead thug to take over his body. Naturally the thug starts killing off people responsible for his death while the doctor inexplicably keeps it all secret. It's fine but plays out super predictably. And like I said, you have to have some major suspension of disbelief going on to swallow the goofy premise.

Image
67. She-Wolf of London (Jean Yarbrough, 1946)
A series of murders are sweeping the city and poor Phyllis Allenby keeps waking up wet and muddy, afraid of what she might have done in the night. But is she really responsible? I have to say, the title of this movie is pretty misleading. It makes it sound like it's related to the other Universal Wolfman pictures, but really it's very much more of a mysterious suspense story, not unlike the aforementioned Cry of the Werewolf or Cat People. Still, it's pretty solid with a brisk pacing. I'd say it's worth a watch.

Image
68. Things Happen at Night (Francis Searle, 1947)
Trying to capitalize on the success of horror comedies like Abbot & Costello's run of films, this corny demon possession flick just doesn't work. The jokes usually fall flat and the effects are pretty terrible. Honestly I don't see a reason to recommend this one at all.

Image
69. The Creeper (Jean Yarbrough, 1948)
Huh, well here's another one that delivers a different film than the poster promises. While the movie appears to promise a "mad scientist creating werecats" kind of flick, it's instead another more cerebral, gaslighting kind of story. While it's not a great movie by any stretch, I've gotta give props to Janis Wilson for being in a perpetuate state of bug-eyed horror for most of the movie at the very idea of coming across a cat.

Image
70. Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff (Charles Barton, 1949)
Talking about both Abbott & Costello and misleading film titles, this A&C follow-up to their string of successful Universal Monster pairings just didn't really work for me. The humor seems to be primarily Costello reacting in his usual way to finding dead bodies everywhere. Yes, Boris Karloff is in it, but he really doesn't have that big a role. This is probably the weakest of the A&C comedy/horror mashups for being just too repetitive and not very funny.

Image
71. G-Men from Hell (Christopher Coppola, 2000)
William Forsythe and Tate Donovan play a couple of G-Men who are bumped off when ambushed on a sting and plunge straight into Hell where they trick Satan (played by Robert Goulet) into escaping via a dimensional portal or something. Once back on Earth they open a detective agency and try to solve a murder of their first client after being branded primary suspects themselves with a mad scenery-chewing Gary Busey hot on their tails. How is this not more well-known? The cast is killer, the premise is ridiculous, it's based on a comic book from well-regarded creator Mike Allred (Madman and iZombie) and it's just a whole lot of fun. This has "cult movie" written all over it. Somebody like Arrow or Vinegar Syndrome need to get on rediscovering this delightfully batshit movie.

Image
72. Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter (Lee Demarbre, 2001)
And speaking of movies that were built from the ground up as a cult film, this one features Jesus Christ teaming up with that mightest of Mexican luchadors Santo to dight vampires because.... I mean, does it matter? It's all very ridiculous and shot on the cheap on what looks like Super 8mm film stock entirely overdubbed, giving it very much a Hershel Gordon Lewis quality. It's a pretty entertaining movie that's legitimately funny at times. You probably know from just the title if you have any desire to watch it.

Image
73. Deathbed (Danny Draven, 2002)
You know, I was really hoping this was a Stuart Gordon=approved remake of the masterpiece Death Bed: The Bed That Eats. Unfortunately, it's not. And in fact, I can't figure out why Gordon would have his name associated with this lame, shitty movie.

Image
74. Druid Gladiator Clone (Matt Farley, 2003)
Um, so apparently there's this Matt Farley guy that has built a whole universe of stupid, low budget movies involving druids for some reason. This is one of them.

16. Cold Mountain (Anthony Minghella-2003) USA/Italy/Romania/UK 3 official lists 8,722 checks

I did like this period recreation of how harrowing life is for civilians during war, but the casting was ridiculous. We got episodic moments where it's like "Hey! It's Brendan Gleeson! It's Giovanni Ribisi! It's Natalie Portman! It's Jack White?!?" They were all good engaging performances, but it's like the movie itself was bored with the Kidman/Law love whatever thing that was the main plot.

17. Goldfinger (Guy Hamilton-1964) UK 15 official lists 34,558 checks

Probably the most Bondiest of Bond movies with all the tropes. The "seduction" of Pussy Galore is pretty galling.

Nervous to return to the farm where he grew up after coming out, a gay man convinces his friends to accompany him, only for them to end up victim to a pitchfork-armed killer in this horror flick. The movie looks superb throughout though with plenty of fog and multi-coloured lighting. The antagonist looks a little silly when seen in close-up, but with face obscured, he is a pretty creepy sight. This isn't great as a gay acceptance film, but as a slasher it is okay.

Directed by a team best known for their horror offerings, it is perhaps unsurprising that the very graphic titular scalping incidents are the film's best asset. As for the rest of the movie, it is fairly standard as far as rape revenge film go - though with a soldier helping her out, it is not quite as emotionally involving had it been her against the rest of the world. For all their scenes together, the pair do not bond much either. Excellent freeze frame end though.

The OP is looking good for me, flavo. Thanks for keeping this regularly updated. And yeah, not surprised about the peak giallo and spaghetti western years continuing to do well.

As per the title, this is always more of a film about Lily Tomlin than Julian Garner as the granddaughter - which is mostly a positive since Tomlin really delivers, mixing bitterness, assertiveness and humour. She also has some great scenes with Sam Elliott and Marcia Gay Harden, both also in strong form. The lack of focus on the granddaughter does not quite feel right though (her abortion becomes a mere catalyst). This is however still very engaging stuff.

Not a screw up at all, but I gotta ask.. What made you decide to have the years going back in time as the chart moves from left to right?

75. Night of the Living Dorks (Matthias Dinter, 2004)
This German horror sex comedy was pretty stupid and raunchier than I was expecting. Basically some nerds get turned into zombies and suddenly find themselves the center of attention. Expect gags like a handjob so strong that his dick comes off and they have to staple it back on. If you think that sounds hilarious then by all means, enjoy I guess.

Image
76. Die You Zombie Bastards! (Caleb Emerson, 2005)
Ok, this ended up being much weirder than I was expecting. The title made it sound like some low budget (which it is) generic zom-com. Instead it's something along the lines of the craziness of Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter that takes a superhero serial killer and throws him into the middle of a bizarre plot from a mad scientist to rule the world with zombies. The whole thing is a garbled mess, but it's never boring.

77. The Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell (Jonny Gillette/Kevin Wheatley, 2006)
This is another one that caught me off guard with how weird it is. Given that it was sponsored by National Lampoon I was expecting a more basic sex comedy with some horror elements like Club Dread. Instead we get a relentlessly weird post-apocalyptic mixed media travelogue blending sci-fi, fantasy, horror mockumentaries and even animation into a heady low budget stew that confounds and repels as much as it entertains. Still, it was more interesting than most of what I've seen presented by National Lampoon in the last couple of decades.

Image
78. Negative Happy Chain Saw Edge (Takuji Kitamura, 2007)
Yosuke is a high school boy who's somewhat listless and unanchored from life until he meets and falls for a mysterious girl who seems to be relentlessly pursued by a chainsaw wielding maniac. Will love conquer all? This was an interesting mix of typical Japanese romantic school drama with more over-the-top Sushi Typhoon-esque action horror. I liked it pretty well although it did feel a little repetitive in places.

Image
79. Retardead (Rick Popko/Dan West, 2008)
From the creators of Monsturd.... Actually, do I need to keep going? This is exactly what it seems like it would be.

Image
80. Lesbian Vampire Killers (Phil Claydon, 2009)
Ugh... This so painfully wants to be like Shaun of the Dead with vampires that it's sad. But instead of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost we get sad sack Matthew Horne and bumbling and obnoxious James Corden. This movie basically strips any exploitive promise a film with this title would have by having almost no nudity and the vampires spewing a milky substance instead of blood and instead replacing it with a string of unfunny one-liners. Bleh.

Image
81. Fade to Black (Vernon Zimmerman, 1980)
Eric Binford is a lonely hardcore film fan who works at a film preservation warehouse who thinks his luck has changed when he meets and scores a date with a gorgeous woman that looks like Marilyn Monroe. But when she accidentally stands him up for his date, it sends him mentally on a downward spiral that takes him on a path of revenge against those who have wronged him. While this is often lumped in with other '80s slashers, it's really more of a dark character study more like Maniac. It's over halfway through the movie before Eric starts to kill but it works because the movie has been focused on getting to know him and understanding his motivations instead of following a bunch of random yahoos getting wasted at a summer camp. It's not perfect though. It does have some tonal issues in places (the Psycho parody comes out of nowhere for instance) but in some ways I kind of relate to this film geek.

Image
82. Indecent Exposure (Gary Graver, 1981)
For those who don't know Gary Graver, he's as celebrated for his cinematography work as he is derided for his career in the adult film industry. He is perhaps most known as being Orson Welles' go-to cinematographer the last couple decades of his life, working on films like F for Fake and The Other Side of the Wind (which he also makes an appearance in). While his adult films are definitely adult films and not something reaching for high art that happens to have extreme sex scenes. Indecent Exposure in particular is a pretty straight forward, campy sex comedy involving fuck romps amidst photo shoots. It's not deep but it is shot well as expected from Graver.

Image
83. Secta siniestra a.k.a. Bloody Sect (Ignacio F. Iquino, 1982)
This one is not what I expected either. For some reason, I had pictured a more austere slow burn Euro horror that offered more of a gothic, simmering atmosphere. Instead Secta Sinestra is a garish, ridiculous and at times overtly silly gore-powered demonica dance that feels like Joe D'Amato making Rosemary's Baby. Not necessarily a bad thing actually. I had fun with it.

Image
84. Blood Beat (Fabrice A. Zaphiratos, 1983)
While this one starts slow, the third act is glorious. Any movie that has a samurai ghost showing up murdering people on queue with a woman's orgasm is ACES.

Image
84. Silent Madness 3-D (Simon Nuchtern, 1984)
So I decided to go all out with this one and watch it with old school red/blue anaglyph 3D turned on. Honestly this fairly standard slasher about a mentally deranged fella accidentally discharged from a psych ward (yea, seriously... this movie has some of the most incompetent hospital staff I've seen in a movie) who then goes on a killing spree. Also I was a little disappointed in the 3D too. I mean, if you aren't gonna bother with making a compelling plot, at least cram in as many silly, stupid 3D effects as you can. But really other than a couple of moments where a blade flies at the screen or a sequence in an air duct, it doesn't take advantage of the 3D much other than a little additional depth of field. Pretty disappointing overall.

Not a screw up at all, but I gotta ask.. What made you decide to have the years going back in time as the chart moves from left to right?
Eh, kind of a screw up. I somehow accidentally checked the Reverse Axis Order box.

Do you make it start on 1914 on purpose ? I have reported 1906 and there were a couple of 1913 I think.

I did originally to make it easier to read. Just haven't updated back to 1906 yet.

18. Wind River (Taylor Sheridan-2017) UK/Canada/USA 4,268 checks

It's been a while since I've watched a cold weather police procedural and I was really enjoying this for the majority of it. It subverted my expectations but not necessarily in a satisfactory way.

19. High Plains Drifter (Clint Eastwood-1973) USA 4 official lists 5,345 checks

A really inspired subversive western from Clint Eastwood. There are no heroes in the west and Eastwood is ruthless here.
Too late, my time has come. Sends shivers down my spine, body's aching all the time

While there is a lot of action here, especially towards the end, it is the quieter bits that really resonate. Particularly potent is the title character reuniting with his father. There is an amazing shot that travels 270 degrees around his head as he remembers his childhood and then the camera keeps subtly moving whenever he and his father converse. The resentment of his brothers, who see themselves as the "real sons" cuts deep too. The songs though? Not always.

Madly in love with her new girlfriend, a wedding photographer becomes conflicted when asked to choose between her lover and her gay best friend in this British indie drama. The basic plot is not especially remarkable, but T'Nia Miller is very solid in the lead role and while the way the film is spliced around her vlog does not always work, she gets some very intimate moments. Indeed, this is a movie more of interest for representation than its story.

Like Burney, I'm not actively trying to watch movies from different years so I'm more "slow" here. Maybe at the end of the month, I'll try to willingly complete a decade or two ^^

This might sound a bit like Death Wish from its plot summary, but it is more closely aligned to John G. Avildsen's Joe with a focus on his concerns about his daughter and limited actual vigilante action. In fact, if anything, the movie about how gun ownership further deteriorates his already fragile mental state rather than provide the safety and security that he thought it would. Stefano Satta Flores absolutely shines in the leading role whatever the case.

This gets off to a great start with kaleidoscopic visuals and some quick-witted humour from how overworked the male protagonist is. Things get a lot less inventive once he arrives in the wilderness and once he encounters Clara Bow. She definitely gives her best and is very vibrant throughout, not afraid to stand up for herself, but her romance with her husband is undernourished and her boredom in the wilderness/desire to leave is never well built up.

20. Scoob! (Tony Cervone-2020) USA/UK/Canada 359 checks

Had pretty uneven writing as it mixed some pretty clever jokes in with some pretty bad jokes. Wish they had scaled it down to something smaller, but I gues they want to build a Hanna-Barbera Universe or something. Meh.

21. The Expendables (Sylvester Stallone-2010) USA/Bulgaria/Spain/Germany 1 official list 26,963 checks

Big dumb action with a huge cast. It tickled the nostalgia center for my brain.

22. Ten Canoes (Rolf de Heer, Peter Djigirr-2006) Australia 1 official list 568 checks

Really enjoyed this. A fable that brings you into the world of Aboriginal Australians.

Cause I'm a 21st Century Digital Boy. I don't know how to live, but I've got a lot of toys

Finishing the '80s and heading into the 2010s for the last decade of my first 100!

Image
86. Silip (Elwood Perez, 1985)
Oh shit... This Filipino exploitation film is bound to offend most who watch it for one reason or another. Starting right out of the gate with a brutal real murder of a bull, the movie is a torrent of sexual frustration that comes to a head in a cascading series of violent acts. I actually thought it was quite good but definitely would not recommend it to all but the stoutest of constitutions.

Image
87. Aenigma (Lucio Fulci, 1987)
This was overall a solid Fulci flick but I have to say, slugs are just not very threatening at all...

Image
88. Dream Demon (Harley Cokeliss, 1988)
I thought this was a solid British horror film with a terrifically grotesque Timothy Spalding and some nicely surreal and bizarre dream sequences that succeed where Nightmare on Elm Street films from the same time period failed.

Image
89. The Dead Next Door (J.R. Bookwalter, 1989)
This one feels like a super low budget version of Romero's Day of the Dead at times. You have the militaristic guys, the scientist doing experiments on slow talking zombies... But it does find it's own more tongue-in-cheek voice and is a pretty good example of how to do practical effects well on the cheap.

Image
90. The Shrine (Jon Knautz, 2010)
This one had a nice sense of atmosphere with an interesting premise by the end. The biggest letdown was the incredibly stiff acting from the leads.

Image
91. The Theatre Bizarre (Tom Savini/Richard Stanley/Buddy Giovinazzo/Karim Hussain/David Gregory/Douglas Buck/Jeremy Kasten, 2011)
It's an anthology flick and like most anthologies, the shorts are a mixed bag. Richard Stanley's Lovecraftian short was a solid one. Buddy Giovinazzo (Combat Shock)'s "I Love You" was a fitfully appropriate tale for grand guignol theatre. Tom Savini's was ok but felt needlessly disjointed. Karin Hussain's might be one of the most technically accomplished and unique as well as being notable for it's extreme eye trauma which I know will bug some people. It does come across a little overly artsy for its own sake at times though. Douglas Buck's was a nice mood piece but felt a little insubstantial. David Gregory's "Sweets" was possibly the most actively gross of the lot. Finally the wraparound story with Udo Kier as an automaton master of ceremonies at a creepy grand guignol-style stage show does a solid job of setting a certain overarching mood. Overall, this was a pretty decent anthology.

Image
92. Entrance (Dallas Richard Hallam/Patrick Horvath, 2012)
Hm... As a movie-going experience, this one tried my patience. It was intentional but it doesn't change how I engaged with it. Still, if you hang in there, it does have a well-done third act that adds to what came before.
