A slasher that has a real 80's feel, and also pays tribute to 50's-60's B horror films.

47. U is for Ugly Sweater Party (2018) 5.5/10

A mass murderer gets killed during a police interrogation, but those detectives made one huge mistake: The murderer was wearing an ugly sweater! Naturally it's demonic and, ten years later, two bros on their way to an ugly sweater party at a Christian camp roll a hobo and steal it from him, unleashing the beast. Hijinks of the lethal kind ensue. Mildly amusing if you like that sort of thing. Why is that theme song sticking in my head?

48. The Queen of Spades [AKA Pikovaya dama] (1916) 7/10

I'm embarrassed to say I haven't read Pushkin's original story (it's been sitting on the shelf for decades now) so I can't say how faithful it is to the original, but from a horror aspect (as listed on IMDb) it's pretty light, even by 1910s standards. The story itself is interesting (I liked the build-up to uncovering the mystery of the cards) and the set design is impressive. Very much looking forward to reading the story after seeing this.

49. The Ritual (2017) 6.5/10

A solid start (set in Northern Sweden but filmed in the beautiful mountains of Romania - man, I need to get out there someday soon) that weakens as it goes but still worth a watch.

#BINGO B3 - Falling Down While Running

Image

This adds a curious spin on vampire mythology by suggesting that the Church had something to do with the very first vampires, but Carpenter generally just cherry picks the tropes and conventions of the genre in a random and senseless way: crucifixes are not a deterrent, but sunlight burns, etc. Most of vampire fights are pretty ordinary too; there are some decent effects though as the vampires are pulled out on chains into sunlight to kill them.

Another Stopover In Flavor Country: More Horror Anime
ImageImageImage
ImageImageImage

129-130a. Ghost Talker's Daydream E1-4 (2004)
130b. Muramasa (1987)
130c. Kiseichuu no Ichiya a.k.a. The Midnight Parasites (1972)
130d. Nidoto mezamenu komoriuta a.k.a. The Death Lullaby (1985)
131. Psycho Diver: Masei Rakuryu a.k.a. Soul Siren (1997)
132-134. Sazan aizu seima densetsu a.k.a. 3x3 Eyes OVA 2: Legend of the Divine Demon E1-3 (1995)
Here's another block of horror anime I decided to work in just cuz I like anime. Anyway, first up is Ghost Talker's Daydream, the story of a constantly weary and agitated spirit medium who works a side gig as a dominatrix. This one definitely has the feel of a manga that has been overly truncated with characters introduced into the mix rather quickly before moving on to the next story beat. The show seems to look for reasons to be pervy for no reason and the character models look off at random which seems to indicate rushed or cheap animation. Overall, it's just not very good. The only positive is that the main character's bitter personality is an interesting one if it had been developed out more. We get flashes of her back story but never enough to really completely flesh out the character.
Short short summaries:
Muramasa: From Osamu Tezuka, creator of Astroboy, Phoenix, etc. the animation here is very choppy whic his too bad. The story of a samurai driven mad with by the magical power of a supernatural sword is an interesting one. I'd like to see this expanded out and updated.
The Midnight Parasites: A barrage of bizarre, surreal nightmarish imagery. Dismemberments. Things eating things. Grotesqueries on parade. I dunno. It was interesting to watch though.
The Death Lullaby: Juxtaposing the bullying of a kid with a large tooth jutting out of his lower lip with the industrialization of the planet and it's ravaging of the environment, it posits how antagonism leads to mutually assured destruction. I thought this one was quite good. It uses a variety of experimental animation techniques and features some horrific imagery to convey the inner psyche of the bullied kid.
Psycho Diver: Soul Siren had potential but the plot was just too muddled to be good. Some may complain about the dated animation (although it came out in 1997, it looks like it could've been straight out of the '80s), although I actually kinda liked that aspect of it.
I thought while I was at it, I'd go ahead and watch the follow-up series of 3x3 Eyes which extends the running time of each episode from 24 to 45 minutes, which I think works to its advantage. This one finds Pai with her memories missing as Yakumo has been searching for her for several years. I would put this one on-par if not slightly above the first one, particularly in delivering genuine horror imagery. The episode about the demonic puppets is legit pretty creepy.

C'est Quoi ce Bordel?: French Splatter Trash from the '80s

135. Mad Mutilator (1983)
136. Folies Meurtrières (1984)
137. Il était une fois le diable - Devil Story (1985)
So I know nothing about these three films beyond the fact that they are all French, from the '80s, VERY low budget, VERY terrible, awash in synth and they all shamble along imbued with some kind of surreal dream logic where things happen for no reason and scenes exist to confound.
Mad Mutilator is almost certainly the most well-known of this bunch, being profiled in bad movie compendiums like The Bad Movie Bible and being shown as a featured screening at the Alamo Drafthouse by Bleeding Skull. The movie itself is a kind of slow motion trainwreck. Ogroff kills a bunch of people. Then some zombies and a vampire show up and kidnap Ogroff's girlfriend. The movie makes the confusing decision to them shift to Ogroff as the protagonist... Everything about this movie is awful from the laughable effects to the confusing, nonsensical script to the horrible direction and editing that makes the movie borderline incoherent at times. All this adds up of course to midnight movie classic status. Get enough drunk friends in a room together, and this is probably deliriously entertaining to watch. although watching it by myself, it gave me the feeling of swimming in a pool of molasses with bees stinging my insides.
Folies Meurtrières is definitely in good company with our buddy Ogroff. This movie has even less dialogue (almost none actually) and has the same 'crazy guy murders people for no reason' plot which then segues into a much more bizarre second half. There's not much else to really say here. It's somehow possibly even more low budget than Ogroff but has an otherworldliness to it, especially in the back half, that makes it more genuinely creepy.
Devil Story, the third in our tres merde trilogy, is the most talkative in the trilogy and is somehow even more disjointed and random than the previous two. It seems like the main plot is that of a deformed fellow in a Nazi uniform rampaging about and massaging the intestines out of folks' bodies with some gentle foot-prodding. but it has really random interludes which have nothing to do with anything like a mummy that shows up, a flying cat attack and a scene with a guy that insists on shooting a horse than goes on FOREVER (you will never want to hear a horse neigh again). What I'm trying to say is that this is pretty much the perfect capper to this triumvate of tripe.

138. Twitches (2005)
Well, my daughter likes witches, so I figured, 'hey its worth a try". The plot is basically Sister, Sister BUT WITCHES. Seriously. When I told my wife what it was about she started choking she was laughing so hard at the laziness of it. The whole thing is also almost distractingly predictable. They made it so obvious who the evil usurper was that I kept suspecting others just because I was seeing misdirection that wasn't there. but yea, I mean, I applaud Disney Channel for being one of the few to even attempt to make Halloween movies for younger audiences but geez, they're just so consistently mediocre to bad.

31. The Vampire Lovers (1970) - Roy Ward Baker
32. Twins of Evil (1971) - John Hough

Scars of Dracula is quite possibly the low point of all Hammer vampire films--at least of the ones I have seen thus far.

On the other hand, once the studio started to embrace more of the erotic themes in the vampire stories, they actually breathed a bit of new life into the genre. Twins of Evil felt like a mostly successful mash-up of light erotica and vampire film, with a sprinkling of Witchfinder General to spice things up a bit more. But more than that, the direction, editing, photography, costumes and sets are all better than Roy Ward Baker's Hammer movies.

This begins well, focused on three siblings terrorised by a doll disappearing and reappearing in strange places in their house with taunting messages written on the walls. Things become less interesting though as focus switches to the central husband and wife, with little in the way of chills and thrills as they only eventually begin to suspect something supernatural afoot. Towards the end, there is some decent gore though and a creepy hooded girl.

Looking forward to the next STAT-urday update, which should happen while I'm asleep if history repeats itself again. :circle:

46. 3 A.M. 3D (Patchanon Thammajira/Kirati Nakintanon/Isara Nadee, 2012)

I saw Sasanatieng's best-known film, Fah talai jone / Tears of the Black Tiger 2 1/2 years ago when last we did this challenge, and while I wasn't blown away by it I did really enjoy it, and it was something pretty distinctive and different from most everything else out there. So it's certainly made me interested in checking out some of his other work, and I'm sure I'll get to his next-best-known work, Mah nakorn / Citizen Dog - which looks like it might inhabit something like the same rough cinematic pasture - before long. But right now I'm still going through some horror stuff, and so I came to this film, which unlike the other two I just mentioned, he didn't write himself. And perhaps that's some of the difference, though the cinematography and set designs are also similarly - ordinary. Cuz this is just another dull ghost story where a young woman comes to a mysterious large house to stay, and soon finds out that one - or maybe more than one - of the inhabitants is not of this earth. I won't say I predicted the outcome exactly, but nothing is particularly surprising here, and there are no real exploitation elements - almost no gore, no nudity - to amp things up. It's basically a love triangle with minimal horror motifs sprinkled throughout, nice enough looking but not very distinctive, and with a distractingly always-mobile camera which can't even stay still for a brief conversation. Very ordinary.

3 A.M 3D is an anthology, and it's one of those kinds with three separate sets of complete credits within the main body of the film, so it could well have been put together after all of them were done; given that there seem to be quite a few Thai horror anthologies in the past decade this seems as good a possibility as any, especially given how different the third story is from the first two. I guess it was shot in, or post-converted to 3D, hence the name; I of course didn't watch it that way (don't have a 3D TV and don't really like 3D anyway) but it seems pretty variable in how much/well it used the technique even from my 2D viewing, with the first and third segment much more overt in this use of it, especially the first.

"The Wig" involves a young woman, May, who slaves away making wigs for her family business all day while her sister parties and orders her around - until older sis bring a bunch of friends home one night, and one of them tries on a wig he shouldn't... this was, eh, ok I guess. Honestly looking at Apinya Sakuljaroensuk (as MInt, the partying sister) in her tight black pants and crazy-colored top was the best part of this, though the whole film (like most Thai genre films I've seen this month) is filled with attractive women, and men. But she stands out and does a good job with her bitchy role.

"The Corpse Bride" involves a young man working in a funeral home whose job is to help prepare the service for a young just-married couple who died in violence. Finding a video of some of their last moments he comes to believe he knows what happened - and he also starts to fall in love with the beautiful dead bride - but alas he turns out to all wrong about his assumptions as to their ends. DEAD WRONG! Also fairly meh.

The third story, "O.T." is a mostly comedic bit about pranking in an office environment taken to extremes; it's the only segment that has any humor to it and overall it was definitely the most fun for me - I like the office-prank kind of stories in general, particularly when you assume that the worst pranksters who don't seem to care if they're actually hurting their coworkers will get their comeuppance, and this falls nicely in that paradigm, though it does feel a little long and tiresome for what it is in the end. Still the best overall though it doesn't help enough to lift the film as a whole into positive territory for me.

The Adventures of Michael Myers, Laurie Strode and friends, Chapters 4-5

47. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (Dwight H. Little, 1988, TSZDT #851
48. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (Dominique Othenin-Girard, 1989)

Six years after the third film. Six years in which the slasher genre had gone from it's peak or near-peak into a fairly steep decline. What happened with this series? When III came out it was neck-and-neck with Friday the 13th, also debuting it's third film, and Freddy hadn't even shown his face yet; by 1988 Jason Voorhees was making his seventh appearance, and Freddy had come from well behind to tie Michael Myers with four. Strange that this series shows a gap of six years when clearly the genre was still quite popular. Was it all just because the third, non-Myers film, was a disaster commercially and with fans? Well, let's make up for lost time...

Part 4 takes place 10 years after the first film - hey the chronology is on track at least - and our Michael no longer has Laurie Strode to terrorize - she's dead you see, as Jamie Lee Curtis was a big enough star now that she didn't have to do this cheap shit anymore, so Laurie is safely out of the pic...oh, well, let's wait a couple of years and a career downturn and who knows what will happen? These films were always a bit bigger-budgeted than the Jason series, which is why you do have a name like Donald Pleasance (nearing the end of his long ride admittedly) and why there are slightly bigger names generally involved, and why these early films are at least fairly competent and have generally better production values. On the other hand they have less violence and nudity than either of the two main slasher competitors, which may be why the series as a whole really doesn't seem to have any more cultural cachet than the others - perhaps less, even, apart from the first film. I don't know, judging films like these is always hard - when you take out the kills and the minimal plot "developments", what's left? In this case we have Jason, sorry I mean Michael once again escaping the mental hospital he's been in downstate (upstate? does it matter) to go back to Haddonfield to terrorize the daughter of Laurie Strode, Jamie (11-year-old Danielle Harris in her first film in a career that's almost as strongly identified in the scream queen category as Curtis'), with Dr. Loomis once again on his trail - despite both of them being consumed in a fiery explosion at the end of Part II. See, it's not just the demonic slashers that are unkillable; elderly British doctors seem to do all right in this series as well. This is the first film not in 2.35 which I think is fine - I'm not sure that the wide aspect ratio generally serves this genre well; it's fine when somebody really attuned to it like Carpenter uses it but too often you have wasted space and close-ups and kills that lose their impact in a broader frame. It's more of the same really but the last act is more fun than the second film's I think and the very last moments are pretty cool. So um, by slasher standards decent enough.

Part 5 picks up a year later; despite Michael having been shot at least 20 times and buried in the last film, Dr. Loomis - now taking it upon himself to spend time with the traumatized and now mute Jamie - isn't surprised when he resurfaces. Amazing how virtually nobody else takes the immortal and unstoppable nature of the killer seriously though, despite his having killed something like 25 people by the beginning of this film, over 10 years, and having escaped the psychiatric hospital twice, being shot dozens of times and burned, run over, buried, etc, etc. Death has no meaning in this universe, clearly - in retrospect horror franchises have been doing the same thing that superhero comics have done all along, which I guess is cool for the fans who can't bear to have their favorite characters go away. But it doesn't make for anything compelling as filmmaking most of the time IMO. I like the beginning, which for the first time since the first film is focused on Michael's point of view as he somehow gets out of his underground trap into a river and floats down to an old shack where an elderly codger - who apparently has no knowledge whatsoever of the outer world - takes him in and heals him up I guess (we don't really see it) until it's time for Michael to start slayin' again with the ol' chef's knife. Otherwise there isn't much of interest here - more teenager focus than in any of the other sequels to date, and thus more similar in some respects to Freddy and Jason - and the slayings continue, Michael continues to be unstoppable, and Loomis somehow continues to keep up with him. The ending for once leaves little doubt in the minds of even the horror novice that this creature from the pit of hell will be back... as long as the box office demands it.

Psycho 2 is honestly almost as good as part 1. A great study on mental illness and gaslighting, and Norman Bates is a conflicted character in such an interesting way.

This is #851, it's part 2 that is #245.

(And also, it should be TSZDT, not TSPDT :whistling: )

Thanks adwest - and welcome! I meant to say that earlier this month when I first noticed your posts. You are certainly diving right in with gusto.
Thanks! I really wanted to beat Maxwell for most watches on this challenge for some reason. Spousal rivalry is dangerous.
Well, you're trouncing him and a lot of others too in what is one of our most competitive challenges so rivalry is paying off! My son is just six and isn't allowed a lot of screentime but I'm looking forward to the days when he can compete in challenges with me. Since he already loves horror films (his second movie was the original Frankenstein, watched just about a year ago), I'm sure he will inspire me to dig even deeper.

Stat-urday Update #3

Welcome to the 2020 Horror Challenge - the scariest challenge of the scariest month of the scariest year. On the seventeenth morning of the challenge, we sit just past the halfway point. So far, we have 50 morbid challenge participants who have amassed a total of 1453 points. flavo5000 is out to a dominating lead, with adwest, psychotronicbeatnik, 1SO, Daviddoes, and VincentPrice rounding out the 60-watch club. Average number of watches at this point is 29.06, which would be good enough for 23th place.

(Either I'm killing it this year [unlikely] or y'all aren't double-checking me. Do keep an eye on your stats in the OP so I can correct mistakes.)

This is also the time where I like to start getting historical with the challenges. If we just all stopped watching Horror, this would be the 22nd busiest challenge of all time on this forum - and nine of the busier challenges were Horror challenges. We're easily on track to make this one of the five busiest challenges (we need only 661 points collectively to crack the top 5). Here are the 7 busiest challenge:
Horror 2017: 2926
Horror 2015: 2635
Horror 2018: 2602
Horror 2019: 2334
Horror 2016: 2114
Horror 2014: 2106
Horror 2013: 2103
Horror 2020: 1453

Films watched so far have ranged from 1896-2020. Here's a breakdown by decade:
Image

Bonus Challenges:

BC1 - Kill the Zombies!: My guesstimate at the start of this challenge was that we'd get to 200-250 zombies slain. So far, we have slayed 343 zombies, which is a great start for the first 17 days. This includes 6 of the top 10, and 55 of the top 100. Shutter is the zombie version of a dead horse, having been watched 7 times thus far this challenge, followed by Vampires (1998) and The Witches (1990)with five watches each. 34. Darkman (1990) - Early, mostly overlooked Sam Raimi comic book adaptation. This one is a fairly conventional "superhero" revenge / origin story, elevated by the makeup effects and some reliably grisly moments and setpieces strictly in Raimi's comfort zone. Liam Neeson and Frances McDormand are both serviceable in earlier roles from their respective careers, but neither give anywhere close to their best work here.

35. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) - Re-watch, after not having seen it the entire way through for at least a decade, and I've found that it has nearly identical strengths and weaknesses as Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula adaptation that I also re-watched for this challenge (this was produced by Coppola, but directed by Kenneth Branagh in between Shakespeare adaptations). While the costumes and set design aren't as gobsmacking or immediately eye-catching as the vamp flick, the tradeoff here is that I'm at least able to take this film seriously on a dramatic front and found the performances largely believable (punchlines aside, Robert De Niro gives an effective turn as the creature). However, one central flaw here is the pacing, which has this puppy constantly moving forward at such a breakneck speed, there's hardly any room to let a major beat play out and be effective before it's already moved onto the next two important plot points.

36. Altered States (1980) - More science fiction than pure horror, but I've made exceptions to count films far less disturbing than this was. In the sense that every element is designed to make the viewer as tense and uncomfortable as possible, this is a hearty success, but was there more to offer here than just the chill factor? Need to let this one sit with me for a bit but my first impression is generally positive, if mainly for the technical aspects at the moment.

10. It: Chapter Two (Muschietti, 2019)
A great cast in this one, but it's terribly bloated, with a lot of "scary" action that doesn't move the plot forward. Although it does have a few effective scenes, notably Jessica Chastain's visit to her old apartment, the scariness is a lot weaker than the original.

11. Deep Blue Sea 2 (Scott, 2018)

12. Ice Cream Man (Norman, 1995)
A fun bad slasher. Very goofy in the way it proceeds - at times it's like a children's movie, and then it will switch gears to have the ice cream man messing about with body parts. Despite the annoying score and poor pacing, it delivers what you'd want from an ice cream-themed slasher.

13. The Conjuring (Wan, 2013) Rewatch
There's nothing original here, but it does have very effective cinematography and sound design to sell the scares. Technically impressive, but I'm not keen on the humourlessness of the film or its portrayal of real life scammers as ghost hunting heroes.

The whisperer shit is the worst long-term storyline in the show's history. Most entertaining part of season 10 is watching Nadia Hilker try and fail to make facial expressions.

11. 3.5* - The Mortuary Collection by Ryan Spindell (2020)

After spending 10 years directing shorts, it's no real surprise that Ryan Spindell's first feature film is a horror anthology. He ended up writing and directing everything himself, so it's a bit more coherent and consistent than most other anthologies, but quality between the different stories invariably varies. The warp-around is about a mortuary where the keeper has a special interest in stories. When a young girl arrives hoping to land a job, she seems more interested in hearing the keeper's stories than getting her hands dirty. She's a little hard to impress though, so each story is a bit more grotesque than the next. The mood is Gothic and dark, but not too serious. Performances are good, the film looks very polished and the effects are top-notch. I do think the three latter shorts do run a little long. Some trimming there and maybe an extra short to add a bit more variation would've made it even better, but Spindell is clearly a talented man.

The Power of Christ Compels You!: Exorcism in Film
ImageImageImageImage
139. Deliver Us from Evil (2014) TSZDT 1001-2000 #332
140. American Guinea Pig: The Song of Solomon (2017)
141. The Rite (2011) TSZDT 1001-2000 #321
142. Anomaly (2016)
While demon possession films have been around a long time, it was really The Exorcist that kick-started the sub-genre back in the '70s, creating a deluge of rip-offs in its wake. Ever since then, we've gotten a steady stream of exorcism films that prey on people's spiritual fears.
First up in this bunch is Deliver Us From Evil from director Scott Derickson (Exorcism of Emily Rose, Marvel's Doctor Strange). It's a demon possession flick by way of gritty crime procedural with Eric Bana as a cop investigating a series of mysterious deaths that seem to hint at something beyond the earthly realm being involved. With a weird priest in tow, he sets out to figure out who (OR WHAT!) is responsible. I'm actually not the biggest fan of possession films (they all seem to end up fairly generic, playing out very similar to The Exorcist ultimately), so when one comes along that offers a little bit different of a take on it, I'm appreciative. While this one certainly isn't without its flaws (it is definitely too false jump scare happy at times and the plot feels like it could use tightening), I didn't mind it too much even though it did devolve into some common tropes in the end.
The Song of Solomon, as you'd guess from the American Guinea Pig tagging, is basically a really gory, over-the-top take on exorcism. The plot is pretty typical but I'm sure what draws people to it is the promise of disgustingness. Honestly though, it seems to show more restraint as compared to many of these kinds of films. That is, until the last 30 minutes where it goes into gross overdrive with limbs twisting as bones protrude and the priest rapes the demon girl which results in a really graphic and rather unnatural C-section. I would think you'd know from this description whether you'd care about watching this or not. I just don't get much enjoyment from this kind of thing.
Those who love their good ol' Catholic exorcism romps will find a veritable buffet of delights with The Rite. A young priest is struggling with his faith and is sent to Italy to go to exorcism school (is this seriously a thing?). The regular course just isn't doing the trick so they have him shadow a hardcore Jesuit who specializes in exorcisms (Anthony Hopkins is optimal scenery-chewing mode). As one may surmise, directly forthwith we are treated to multiple demon possession sessions. So the idea of basically doing an Exorcist-like story but from the perspective of a skeptic who is losing his faith is actually a pretty good one. Unfortunately, the movie seems to be almost of two minds. The first hour may interest those who come into it with a more vested interest in a character study of a priest struggling with his beliefs but get turned off by the showboating exorcisms in the back half while hardcore horror buffs may get bored with it long before it gets to the razzmatazz. Overall, it's not a bad movie but could've used some more thoughtful editing to give it more tonal consistency.
Anomaly is very low budget with a pretty mediocre, straightforward demon possession/exorcism plot. It's shot competently but the acting is just awful and the plot meanders in the first half too much. Just avoid this one.

Demons in the Bushes: The Pinoy Slowburn

143. Pangarap ng puso a.k.a. Demons (2000)
144. Haplos a.k.a. Caress (1982)
145. Kinatay a.k.a. The Execution of P (2009)
My history with horror from the Philippines has historically been limited to the trashy grindhouse horror from the likes of Eddie Romero and Cirio Santiago, so watching these three more character-driven methodically paced films was a nice change.
Demons was an interesting one. Despite the title and the horror tag, it’s as much if not more a character study following a girl through the years, hearing stories of demons in the jungle while political strife wages around her. As she grows older, she falls in love with a young man where both the socio-economic and more literal demons seek to destroy what they have together. I’m not that familiar with the political turmoil in the Philippines in the ‘80s, so some of the subtext of this one may have been lost on me. Still, it has some narrative elements that interested me nonetheless. The pacing and magical realist symbolism reminded me of the films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul although filmed in a more flat, muted palette.
Haplos at first seems more like a more standard romantic drama that sets itself up as a sort of love triangle. But as things go on, something darker and more haunted starts to creep into the narrative, granting it a rather eerie, mysterious third act. I certainly liked things about it, particularly the way it’s filmed toward the end, but it could’ve used some tightening up in the first half.
Kinatay is a VERY slow burn, but one that has a rather shocking conclusion. The first hour plus of the film follows a newly married low income couple traveling around the city running errands before and after their wedding (which they seem almost casually indifferent to). Eventually the man goes to a strip club where a violent act kicks off a very dark, disturbing evening for him. This actually reminds me of a more disturbing, more succinct (although still entirely too drawn out) film like Jeanne Dielman. Honestly this one is something of a hard sell. I can’t say I enjoyed it, and the shaky, dark camera work (which suits the general tone of the film) makes it hard to really get into the characters themselves in a meaningful way.

146. Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School (1988)
I knew this one wasn’t going to be great the second I saw Scrappy Doo. Like The Reluctant Werewolf, this one mainly involves just Scooby & Shaggy who ends up at a school for monsters, helping the monster kids win at volleyball for some reason. There’s also an evil entity trying to corrupt the school in the third act mainly. In general this one feels even more episodic than many Scooby Doo movies with the last thirty minutes just sort of petering on without much purpose. I’m sensing a pattern of pretty much every Scooby movie before Zombie Island being crappy….

19. Vamps (2012) - This was more of a comedy despite the presence of an odd severed head. The plot is two women in New York who happen to be vampires. It was directed by Amy Heckerling who is probably best known for directing Clueless. One of my favorite parts of the movie is a blood spit-take when a vampire is told surprising news while feeding. While not in anyway scary, I did enjoy the mixture of Clueless style comedy with morbid subject matter. The only big negative was some of the effects near the end of the film look very cheap.

With an Unman, Wittering and Zigo vibe, this gets off to an intriguing start with a new teacher unsettled by the private jokes his giggling students seem to share, the fights they seem to get up to, and just how close one student wants to get to him. As the movie progresses though, it becomes less about the girls collectively and more about the one student in particular. Darya Balabanova shines in the role, but this shift in focus is less interesting.

Better late than never...

1. Visions (2015 / Kevin Greutert) 4/10 Decades of Death 2010s
Isla Fisher plays a woman who relocates to a vineyard with her husband after a fatal car crash. She soon starts experiencing fleeting visions of violence, seemingly directed towards her, that no one else can see. The acting isn't that great. The unusual setting is probably the film's most distinguishing feature. It's got an occasional Hitchcockian vibe courtesy of the Hermanesque score and some of the paranoid sequences.
2. Dracula (1931 / Todd Browning) 6/10 Decades of Death / 1930s Kill the Zombies!
Probably the most famous horror movie I'd not seen. It's a film of impressive moments rather than a great work as a whole. I was struck by how Lugosi's voice at times reminded me of the reverse talking in Twin Peaks.
3. The Mummy (1932 / Karl Freund) 5/10 Kill the Zombies!
4. Matriarch (2018 / Scott Vickers) 2/10
A man and his pregnant girlfriend are left stranded in rural Scotland after their car breaks down. Fortunately, they're rescued and given shelter for the night by an elderly farming couple and their two grown sons. If you think, based on these few details, you could predict the way the plot plays out, you'd be right.
7. The Hunt (2020 / Craig Zobel) 6/10 Decades of Death 2020s
The umpteenth spin on the The Most Dangerous Game tale of 'people hunting people' for sport. This time it's done as a black comic satire on the modern American left and right wing's caricatures of each other: SJWs vs. Deplorables.
6. Malatesta's Carnival of Blood (1973 / Christopher Speeth) 3/10 Decades of Death 1970s
Standard early 70s weirdness. A family visit a bleak fairground built atop an underground lair stacked with copious amounts of polythene.
7. Chiller: Toby (1995 / Bob Mahoney) 6/10 Decades of Death 1990s
I seem to be inadvertently watching a lot of films centred around pregnant women here. This one is a creepy, low-key British TV movie. A pregnant woman loses her unborn baby in a car crash. She gets pregnant again but still hasn't gotten over her earlier loss... or he hasn't gotten over her!
8. Radius (2017 / Caroline Labrèche; Steeve Léonard) 4/10
High concept plot suited to socially distanced world. Following a car accident a man learns everyone he comes into a radius of around 10 metres with instantly dies. The film follows him as he tries to discover the cause of this curse and whether it can be removed. In execution it initially reminded me a little of the superior 2005 short film Still Life. It's professionally made but pretty bland. The suspense isn't helped by the fact that large parts of the film take place away from people. Then they cram in a lot of incongruent stuff into the last third.
9. Lost Hearts (1973 / Lawrence Gordon Clark) 7/10
The Ash Tree (1975 / Lawrence Gordon Clark) 8/10

Ghost Stories for Christmas: Number 13 (2000 / Pier Wilkie) 6/10
11. Vivarium (2019 / Lorcan Finnegan) 4/10
A young couple (Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg) are taken to view a house in a new development, left stranded there by the estate agent and unable to escape what is soon revealed to be an Escher-like labyrinth of hermetic suburban hell. Such a minimalist plot relies heavily on characters and performances. Poots is fine, but mismatched with Eisenberg; miscast as a gruff alpha type. The production design is the film's most impressive aspect, suitably minimalistic and aseptic, but the plot, essentially a modern update of Woman in the Dunes is often obvious and superficial. The backstory is also underdeveloped, there is very little set-up before the main plot begins, so it's hard to personally invest in the two characters. It's the type of film that you can imagine being profound in the hands of a Bergman or Antonioni 60 years ago, but now, in these hands, it feels a little trite.
12. Three Cases of Murder (1955 / Wendy Toye; David Eady; George More O'Ferrall; Orson Welles) 4/10 Decades of Death 1950s

The League of Gentlemen: Escape from Royston Vasey (1999 / Steve Bendelack) 8/10
16. Open Windows (2014 / Nacho Vigalondo) 4/10
Elijah Wood is the stalker/fan of Sasha Grey's movie star, unconvincingly roped into spying on her through his laptop by a mysterious hacker, leading to an increasingly far-fetched series of plot twists taking place around the city over the course of one night. The combination of media, voyeurism and seedy glamour is reminiscent of De Palma. It's all hamstrung, however, by the clunky central gimmick of most of the action taking place through the computer screen.
17. The Night Stalker (1972 / John Llewellyn Moxey) 5/10 Kill the Zombies!
Minor cult classic, The X Files meets Kojak. Well written and acted, but with an underwhelming central mystery.
18. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988 / James Signorelli) 6/10 Kill the Zombies!
Extreme '80s cheese that holds up better than a lot of its type, thanks mainly to a self-aware script ably carried by Cassandra Peterson's wisecracking sex bomb protagonist, like a reincarnated Mae West.
19. The Dunwich Horror (1970 / Daniel Haller) 6/10 Kill the Zombies!
20. Death Line (1972 / Gary Sherman) 4/10 Kill the Zombies!

Key: (IMDb rating / icheck rating / my rating) 7.3 is above average on IMDb, 4% is above average for icheck, and 7 (out of 10) is above average for me.

Oct. 16. The Lodger (1944) 7.1 / 3.8% / 5

This is a fictionalized story about Jack the Ripper (who was never caught or identified in real life), and the third film from the novel of the same name. I don’t know the book, but I dislike how the film is written: Jack is introduced as a new lodger in the home of a fairly wealthy old Victorian couple. He is not explicitly shown to be The Ripper, but the movie bends over backwards to imply that he is by making him hilariously creepy. But it’s not a comedy so the hilarity is at the movie’s expense.

A typical dialogue in the film is something like:

Lodger: “I’m going out to walk the sinful, filthy streets until 4am with my big bag of scalpels.”

Old couple: “Oh do be careful Mr. Lodger, that medical knife killer is still on the loose.”

Lodger: “Wonton women must be purified for their devil deeds. Goodbye.”

Old couple: “What a curious fellow.”

Zero suspense. The movie could’ve been a mystery-type thriller by either slowly revealing the lodger as the killer or by presenting us with several suspects and mixed clues. Or it could have explicitly shown him as the killer, but heightened the tension by presenting him as charming and harmless to the characters most in danger.

Or something else. It’s not my job to write movies. This was not poorly made though, and it had a nice gas-lit noir atmosphere.

Oct. 17. The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) 7.3 / 5.7% / 5

This was the first film adaptation of the Lodger novel, by none other than Alfred Hitchcock. Thought it would be interesting to watch for comparison. I would not in a hundred years be able to identify this silent film as a Hitchcock, however, it may not surprise you that Hitchcock is much better at creating uncertainty and tension. It might as well be from a different book. The lodger is presented as young, handsome, and dark but not as freakish or obviously guilty, and yet he more quickly invites suspicion and polarizes the other characters. Hitchcock’s movie casts doubt on the identity of The Ripper and moves the story in a very different direction than the 1944 version.

Ultimately though the artifice of old silent films is more demanding and less entertaining to me than the merciful simplicity and naturalism of these new-fangled "talkies." I can’t say I really enjoyed watching this.

The notion of oblivious role play game participants comes with potential here, but the players catch on to something being amiss very early on; the rules of their game are also confusing. The film benefits though from an actual eerie-looking baboon and a creepy music score. As a satire though, the project fails. The students are hunted down by an animal that they have been inhumanely experimenting on, but the film wants us to root for THEM?

My history with horror from the Philippines has historically been limited to the trashy grindhouse horror from the likes of Eddie Romero and Cirio Santiago, so watching these three more character-driven methodically paced films was a nice change.
I have seen one great horror film from the Philippines, and it's called The Road (no Cormac McCarthy connection). It's not for everyone (see: the IMDb rating) but I found it genuinely creepy and atmospheric and loved the way the story unfolded.

A lie ain't a 'side of the story.' It's just a lie.
