Jeez, that was really uncomfortable scene to watch in this #MeToo era. Made me really dislike his character - though he does get some nice redemption bits later on.
Yep, now that is totally unacceptable... and it prob seems very dated and I might not enjoy it now. Back then we laughed and laughed though.

JCVD fans should approach with caution here since the action legend only appears at the very beginning and end of the movie, and while his athletic kickboxing and dirty fighting tactics are certainly a sight to see, he has very little to do on the acting front. Also, despite being the most intriguing element here a la Bogie in Play It Again, Sam, it is only in the second half of the film that the protagonist meets the spirit of Bruce Lee (see above).

My college roommate's fav quote (no spoiler since this has next to nothing to do with the plot):

Nathan:
Alice, please? Your dog, Alice - it and my appetite are mutually exclusive.

Alice:
Well, what's wrong with the dog?

Nathan:
Simple: he's been licking his asshole for the last three straight hours. I submit to you that there is nothing there worth more than an hour's attention and I should think that whatever he is attempting to dislodge, is either gone for good... or there to stay.
That's so random. I don't even remember a character called Alice, or that dialogue exchange, and I watched the film less than 24 hours ago.
:D that's great... makes me laugh. That dialogue is probably the single most memorable for me (other than Sam Jackson almost running the car off the road when the woman jogs by or him screwing up the lyrics to the Dan Seals song). Come to think of it there are some memorable lines throughout... that's what happens when one of my college roommates plays the damn thing over and over. Probably seen that film 6 or 7 times and it's not even one of my favorites.
Shane Black scripts are relentlessly quotable. The Nice Guys and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang were two of my favorites from the last 20 years, and movies like The Monster Squad and Lethal Weapon were part of my childhood. I was so excited when I saw he was going to be doing the new Predator movie and then very quickly disappointed. It still had some good Shane Black dialogue but the narrative was just a mess.

Ah, I'll have to check The Monster Squad at some point in my life... been meaning to watch that forever and I was in high school when it was released. You'd think I'd have seen it. Saw a Charlie Martin Sheen flick from 1987 last night that I had never heard of either. My adolescent brain must have been on other things back then.

Jeez, you guys are watching a lot of movies lately. (D:) Oh wait. I forgot that most of you aren't living in a country in which the government has told you that you have to go work every single day for the rest of the year no matter how bad the Covid-19 pandemic gets. <_<
And here I am on the other side of the country knowing my job could be counted in the days or could be weeks (please note I am the Store Manager of a Salvation Army Family Store (for those non-Australians while we call this an op-shop you might call it something like a thrift shop). Far from a necessary business and part of an organisation about human life, I'm on the borderline of closing. But otherwise yeah I agree with your assessment.
At least your premier is telling parents that they should keep their children at home despite the fact that schools will remain open indefinitely. Over here, the advice being given out is that we should carry on, business as usual. Some parents are opting to keep their kids home, but a lot are not since both the premier and prime minister keep going on about how it is essential for schools to stay open despite the fact that we are the one institution exempt from social distancing (since it's not possible inside a classroom).
Before we go anywhere else with this conversation ( and probably it should be moved to the appropriate thread) I am not looking for a fight and if I was, I'm to drunk to see it through.

Anyway I wish my Premier had not said what she had and not enforced it through the schools. I now have to take my son to work as he isn't allowed to go to school even though it is open, as my wife has never been employed and therefore is home and can look after him (and to be honest my job isn't "essential" anyway) cause if I leave him home with his sisters his anger issues will maybe escalate and possibly cause more damage to my house.

Sorry Sol, I'm sounding off on you when I shouldn't, stressed and drunk is not a good mixture.

Sorry to hear that, Wayne. I didn't realise that you had issues with keeping your kids apart from each other. I also must confess that I can only view this from a teacher perspective since I don't have kids of my own. I'm not interested in a fight either, I'm just likewise really stressed and concerned with the way things are not working in anybody's best health interests by keeping schools open, and the more I read about stuff from our fellow forum members overseas, the more and more stressed I get.

On a lighter note, I absolutely love shopping at Salvos. There's where I have acquired most of my DVDs over the past few years. Some real treasure trove stuff out there. I must make it a point to come to Kempsey at some stage and visit your store. I've actually never been to New South Wales at all. Hopefully I can make a trip out there at some point when all this Covid-19 stuff is over.

Take care, and I hope you and your kids remain healthy in these uncertain times.

While both Brandon Lee and Dolph Lundgren have some solid action scenes here, the chemistry and banter between them is the film's best element, despite the occasional odd exchange (the size of each other's appendages). The film also progresses towards a memorably over-the-top spinning wheel climax, but the plot always feel secondary to the action with some weird extremes involving Lundgren's past history. Brutal electrocution scene though.

24. Tony Manero, by Pablo Larrain (2008) 7,5/10

A good film on a psychopath obsessed with Saturday night fever...

25. Un condé, by Yves Boisset (1970) 7,5/10

Michel Bouquet's thirst for revenge makes quite a good film...

26. The Don is dead, by Richard Fleischer (1973) 8,5/10

An excellent mafia movie, probably made obscure by the Godfather's success, but this movie has a lot of merits on its own.

28. Cruising (1980, William Friedkin): 7.5
29. The Annihilators (1985, Charles E. Sellier Jr.): 7.0 - Enjoyable low-budget 1980s Vietnam-vets turn vigilante movie. Four ex-soldier come together again to avenge the murder of one of their army buddies by a violent gang and help protect a community against said gang (training them like they are the 7 samurai themselves). The low-budget aspect shows, especially the acting is as wooden as often in B-movies, but the heroes are relatable average blue collar Joes instead of (almost) superhumans, the training of seniors, women and other "normal" citizens is a nice differentiating aspect and the action scenes are very solid.

We get little in the way of stunts and banter this time as the plot takes a long time to get going since the screenwriters awkwardly try to shoehorn the characters into a set-up similar to the first; Sally Field is even inexplicably once again engaged to the dimwitted Mike Henry. With the occasional breathtaking stunt work (driving in an amusement park that collapses around him) and an energetic Gleason, this is hard to dislike but pretty tepid.

Loved this one, which featured Bob Hoskins and had appearances by Michael Caine and a young Lester Freamon! The plot itself is pretty ordinary, about the relationship that develops between a high-end call girl and her driver, but beneath the plot are swirling themes of seduction, deception, and the fragility of surface appearances.

47. Victoria (2015)
A bizarrely terrible movie. For the first 45 minutes, a Spaniard and a German try to flirt awkwardly in broken English. Anyone who has stayed in hostels in Europe is familiar with this dynamic, which is as mundane as it is boring. Then, randomly, and for no apparent reason, a heist occurs. That's the movie. Also, the acting is pretty bad, and it's all shot in one take, though I can't figure out why.

Boasting an unfaltering European accent, Jack Black provides what is perhaps his most dynamic performance after Bernie here as he constantly charms and reassures everyone who he cons, even the agent sent to investigate him. The film's choice to play things for laughs never quite works though, with the curious ambiguities regarding the protagonist (how much he realised the wrongfulness of his actions) undercut by the comedy treatment.

Another Hitchcock under my belt. I liked this one - a lot of fun and pretty clever with some laugh-out-loud moments. Solid suspense (duh) and really funny to see world politics play out with hindsight.

Looking at what I have left, I think I can finish BC 1&2 - I have three more from BC1 completed but unreported (episodes of Dirty Money), which only leaves me 3 for BC1 and 2 for BC2. Go go go! :run:

13. Die Hölle / Cold Hell (Ruzowitzky, 2017) 4/10
Crime Wave: Attempted murder
14. Batman: Assault on Arkham (Oliva-Spaulding, 2014)
This is the Suicide Squad movie that the dire Suicide Squad film should have been. A good sense of pace, lots of well-animated action, and all the crazy squad members getting their moment in the spotlight and actually behaving like villains, all of which the live-action film lacked. It's not in the top tier of DC Animated films, and the jokes should have been a lot sharper, but is still a satisfying watch.
6/10

Crime Wave: Burglary (illegal entry into Arkham Asylum)

Image

15. Ocean's Eleven (Soderbergh, 2001) [Rewatch]
Been ages since I saw this. Falls short of greatness, but an expertly crafted heist film.
7/10

Crime Wave: Computer Crimes (Ocean's crew hack into the casino's systems to control cameras, reroute calls, etc.)

Image

16. Darktown Strutters (Witney, 1975)
Gene Corman jumps on the blaxploitation bandwagon. The plot is hard to understand, but seems to be a biker chick leading her gang on a search for her mother, during which she continually clashes with racist cops and what appears to be a chapter of the KKK lead by a mad scientist Colonel Sanders. In terms of direction, production and writing this is bottom of the barrel, but the enthusaistic performances and musical sequences with cameoing bands give the film a variety show feel that makes it bearable.
3/10

Law and Order: Police Raid

Image

17. Ocean's Twelve (Soderbergh, 2004)
After an excellent first movie, the crew are forced back together in a lazy and unbelievable ways to... well, the official description says they pull off three major European heists, but actually the only heist they successfully pull is to snatch a kid's backpack. The rest of the movie is a series of loosesly connected scenes where the cast clown around planning ever-more-elaborate heists while zany music plays. The final twist invalidates most of the movie.
3/10

There is less for John Malkovich to work with here as an older and more confident Tom Ripley, but he still turns in a solid performance, if one that stands in Matt Damon's shadow. The film benefits from a great Ennio Morricone score that sometimes seems to taunt the characters, and there are many intense moments throughout - particularly a train ride in which everything seems to go wrong. Maybe inferior The American Friend but still pretty good.
