1. La marche de l'empereur (2005) 6/10

Kind of boring, tbh, and I already knew most of the behavioural penguin stuff from watching other documentaries, but it was pretty and had cute penguins.

2. Little Dieter Needs to Fly (1997) 6/10

Fascinating story, pretty dull film. Herzog really needs to butt out with his narration because geez he puts me to sleep.

We don't need no stinkin' fictionShow
1. Manufactured Landscapes (2006)
2. Reel Injun (2009)
3. Lost Heroes (2014)
4. The Staircase e1: Crime or Accident? (2005)
5. Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story (2010)
6. The Staircase e2: Secrets and Lies (2005)
7. The Staircase e3: A Striking Coincidence (2005)
8. The Staircase e4: A Prosecution Theory (2005)
9. The Staircase e5: A Weak Case (2005)
10. The Staircase e6: The Prosecution's Revenge (2005)
11. Planet Earth II: Islands (2016)
12. Inside Hana's Suitcase (2009)
13. The Last Gladiators (2011)
14. Perfect Bid: The Contestant Who Knew Too Much (2017)
15. The Staircase e7: The Blowpoke Returns (2005)
16. The Staircase e8: The Verdict (2005)
17. The Staircase e9: Reopening the Case (2013)
18. The Staircase e10: The Last Chance (2013)
19. The Staircase e11: Looking for Closure (2018)
20. The Staircase e12: Between Anger and Despair (2018)
21. The Staircase e13: Flawed Justice (2018)
22. Woodstock (1970)

Double. Oh geez - a nearly 4-hour cut of a nearly 50 year old concert featuring music I'm only "meh" on. And me with my disdain of music documentaries. And I loved it. I have no idea why, but I loved it. I felt young again, felt the music in new ways, felt the love. It was brilliantly put together.

23. Warrendale (1967)

Triple. This reminded me to much of Titicut Follies. A fly-on-the-wall documentary about children at an institution for the behaviorally challenged. If you made me guess the director with no context, I'd have guessed Wiseman.

24. Waiting for Fidel (1974)

Double. This Canadian doc is about a trip to Cuba to try and get Castro to appear in their documentary. While it's an interesting intro to Cuba, it's 45 years old and not all that timeless.

25. Watermark (2013)

Double. This Canadian doc is the follow-up to their Manufactured Landscapes. This one is about water - it's effect on us, and our effect on it. They follow different uses of water all over the world and touch on a lot important issues worldwide with an underlying tone acknowledging climate change. All of this while including some amazing cinematography. Earth porn at its finest, they find the beauty everywhere they go. I vastly prefer this to Manufactured Landscapes - not that ML, was bad, but I'm much more interested in the subject material here and love the scenery so much more. A definite recommend and an addition to my favorites list.

26. Hunting Hitler: The Final Hunt Begins (2018)
27. Hunting Hitler: Clandestine Cache (2018)

Wife and I started this as a guilty pleasure during the documentary challenge last year, and this is the new season. It's fun - you just have to be up front about the fact that the cool part is the history and places and infrastructure about the nazi party during the war, and not the "Hitler totally escaped, man" part. But you learn cool historical facts, see some shockingly cool (and verified) evidence, and get to laugh at the overdramatization of it.

So you have to tell me, do you think he did it?!
I don't, but ultimately I don't think it matters. The case has been fully settled, so it is what it is. If he did it, he's been punished. If he didn't, not much can happen.

And the defense bias aside (which is interesting, because the filmmakers wanted to present both sides, but the prosecution stopped cooperating after a month), I think a lot of my opinion has to deal with the integrity of the Durham County prosecutors office. The District attorney who succeeded Hardin (Mike Nifong, who made a brief appearance in the Staircase) was disbarred... for doing exactly what the prosecution was accused of doing in this case in the Duke Lacrosse case. And that's not a coincidence I can live with.
I absolutely think he did it. But that was after looking at everything the documentary left out, including some pretty damning evidence and a pretty major motive.

12. Deutschland im Herbst (1978) a.k.a. Germany in Autumn
I'm not quite sure what to make of this one. Kind of scattershot anthology comprised of documentary footage, staged scenes, a Fassbinder rant and other seemingly random ephemera that paint a picture of Germany at a specific point in time.

13. Farrebique ou Les quatre saisons (1946)
Follows a rural family throughout the year in day-to-day interactions, taking a more fly on the wall approach. It was pleasant but hardly revelatory.

14. Primate (1974)
LOTS of discussion of ape semen... A standard Wiseman doc following primate researchers. People concerned with animal cruelty should probably avoid.

15. Moi, un noir (1958)
An interesting, freewheeling narrative doc following three Nigerian immigrants in the Ivory Coast working away their lives and dreaming of something more.

16. The Real Story: Scream (2013)
Essentially a doc about the original Gainsville murders that inspired Kevin Williamson to write Scream. They really aren't terribly similar to one another but it does its best to compare and contrast them regardless.

17. VHS Massacre: Cult Films and the Decline of Physical Media (2015)
A very messy, poorly organized doc purportedly about the death of VHS but working in random Troma plugs and looks at indie filmmaking in general that seem to have little bearing on the primary focus. Regardless, it still had some entertainment value.

How'd you like Wishful Drinking? It's been one of those I'll watch "next week" for a couple years now...
Well, there wasn't many surprises here. Most of her anecdotes I have heard before. But she has been very open with her addictions throigh the years with Postcards from the Edge etc. so there have been many celeb news about this.

But she manage to keep it fun. And the minutes just run by.

Just a general statement, I'm wildly susceptible to suggestion on Documentaries, so if there are any docs any of you want to promote, point me to them, and it's highly likely I'll watch them.

(And yes, Black Roots is already high on my watchlist.)

I never reveal spoilers so I basically just write a elevator pitch

But so far I woild recommend
Family (2001) Denmark
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0294567/reference

The director tries to connect with his father after 20 years.
It's interesting to see how glad his cousins are to hear from him. But the more closer relations he talks to the more reluctant they get.

It's probably hard to find though.

Just a general statement, I'm wildly susceptible to suggestion on Documentaries, so if there are any docs any of you want to promote, point me to them, and it's highly likely I'll watch them.

(And yes, Black Roots is already high on my watchlist.)

22. Woodstock (1970)
23. Warrendale (1967)
24. Waiting for Fidel (1974)
25. Watermark (2013)"
26. Hunting Hitler: The Final Hunt Begins (2018)
27. Hunting Hitler: Clandestine Cache (2018)
28. When Jews Were Funny (2013)

Double. Canadian documentary about the old Jewish comedians and about just how funny the older Jewish generation was. This ended up being pretty funny, with some fantastically dry and dark humor coming through. An easy fun watch.

29. Planet Earch II: Mountains (2016)

Earth porn at its finest. Snow leopards are cute!

30. Being Canadian (2015)

Double. A Canadian doc about what it means to be a Canadian. Covers stereotypes about Canadians, their relationship with the USA, and Canadian humor. A decent enough watch, but not worth going out of your way for.

31. My Millenial Life (2016)

Double. This Canadian doc was about millenials. And how people who do weird things and make stupid decisions have a tough time. "Ermagerd, I realized after moving that I couldn't life on $7.50/hour in New York City." Or the girl who was in more debt to her friends for concert tickets from the past year than I spent on my wedding. It was just stupid and a waste of time.

32. Hunting Hitler: Nuclear Nazi Weapons (2018)
33. Hunting Hitler: 150 Feet Below (2018)
34. Hunting Hitler: Dead Drops (2018)

It's fun to see them connect dots of random WW2/Nazi facts I know. Each episode is ~20% new/key info and ~80% overexplaining/overdramatizing, which is a ratio I can live with.

Doc, You Meant Aries?Show
1. Stories We Tell (2012)
2. Being Different (1981)
3. The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (2011)
4. Waco: The Rules of Engagement (1997)

5. Was It Only a Paper Moon? (1997)

Image

A conspiracy documentary that questions whether the moonlanding in 1969 was faked. The filmmakers raise a handful of interesting ideas, but the low budget and amateurish production values hinder them from properly making their case. The film mostly consists of voice-over narration over shots of diagrams and written articles, with an occasional protruding pencil (see above) pointing to things. There are some photographs in the mix too, but they are described to us as opposed to the filmmakers highlighting or circling anything.

That's my problem - not streaming on common platforms, and wicked hard to google with that title. I'm not seeing it anywhere...
It is on a DVD called Nordic View alongside 4 other documentaries. But outside of Norway and Denmark it's probably hard to find regardless. They are all subtitled but it depends how much they managed to sell to other libriaries abroad.

This is my favorite challenge of the year by a wide margin, and the one I'm most successful at getting my wife obsessed with. I tend to turn a lot of challenges into documentary-ish challenges.

Of course, I've watched 2 narrative films this month, and those only because we were decorating for Christmas.

Okay, I’ll name a few :)

Memorandum (1967)
My favourite «Holocaust survivor revisits» documentary. It’s official and very underseen (50 checks). Available online and it’s Canadian so you can double dip.

The Work (2017)
Set inside a single room in Folsom Prison, three men from the outside participate in a four-day group-therapy retreat with a group of incarcerated men for a real look at the challenges of rehabilitation.
If you watch this, I dare you not to cry Maxwell!

I Am Another You (2017)
