4. Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (1927)
"5-6. Shorts (122m):
Wintergartenprogramm (1895, 7m)
The Capture of roma (1905, 6m)
The Fall of Troy (1911, 31m)
Mabel's Married Life (1914, 17m)
Rowdy Ann (1919, 21m)
The Goat (1921, 23m)
Death's Marathon (1913, 17m)"
7. The Battle of the Somme (1916)

I think this was my mistake for watching it now, but it's hard to appreciate this when I'm in the middle of Band of Brothers. I find it impressive they got the footage they did for this documentary, but the footage they have isn't all that interesting. Lots of marches and staged artillery fire. Ended up feeling longer than it was.

SpoilerShow
1. Furcht / Fear (1917, Robert Wiene) 4/10

2. Thomas Graals bästa film / Thomas Graal's Best Film (1917, Mauritz Stiller) 5.5/10

3. Unheimliche Geschichten / Eerie Tales (1919, Richard Oswald) 4.5/10

4. Daddy-Long-Legs (1919, Marshall Neilan) 5/10
5. Vingarne / The Wings (1916, Mauritz Stiller) 6.5/10.
An earlier version of Dreyer's Michael. Hits many strong notes, but a little too basic.

6. Madame de Thèbes / The Son of Destiny (1915, Mauritz Stiller) 5.5/10
Solid melodrama.

7. Sången om den eldröda blomman / Song of the Scarlet Flower (1919, Mauritz Stiller) 6/10
Had great expectations, but turned out to only be a moderately good melodrama. A shame given what Stiller had already made at this point.

8. Meyer aus Berlin / Meyer from Berlin (1919, Ernst Lubitsch) 6.5/10
Fittingly cheeky for Lubitch in this era, but surprisingly flat and ordinary cinematically. The Oyster Princess from the same year looks spectacular, this looks almost a little ugly in spots. Still very fun, though the comedy is too exaggerated.

9. Goluboy ekspress / China Express (1929,
With spectacular shots, action packed mayham and great soviet montage this propaganda film may be a bit too heavy, but watching the slave revolt extent from the back compartment to the front was a great experience (and will remind you of a few very recent outings). 8/10.

10. Seven Footprints to Satan (1929, Benjamin Christensen)
At time so absurd that it comes across as brilliantly surreal, and with the final twist everything will certainly make sense. I can see why many would find this insanity great, but it just struck me as far too thin and silly, especially the opening, and from a cinematic perspective it could certainly have been far more visual. Note, this is a horror comedy, and expect to be entertained. A good effort for sure. 6/10.

11. The Jack-Knife Man (1920, King Vidor)
Pretty standard sentimental fare with a weather-beaten but good-hearted poor/tramlike man, and a child to care for. 6/10.

Early Ozu work. I tend not to connect with movies centered around children, and this was no difference, but I thought this was good nonetheless. I liked the camera work and how the story advanced without relying too heavily on cards. And it ended up being a sweet story, which helped.

Strong batch there, I would definitely recommend Rayon de soleil to everyone here. Beautiful cinema. I have not seen Eternal Love. Will make it a priority. Have you seen Herbier's Little Devil May Care btw?

Not only is the Danish prince a woman in this German incarnation, but she has grown up living public life as a man after her mother lied about her gender at birth to avoid challenges to the throne. This in turns leads to some curious plot deflections as Hamlet secretly pines for Horatio and genuinely has no romantic interest in Ophelia. The film never truly capitalises on Hamlet's gender identity struggles though and always far more about her father's death than her struggle with being forced to live as a man. Very curious, but a bit of a missed opportunity.

Sorry, everyone. I've had too many things going on IRL to watch anything, really, and man, today was just one thing after another. I updated the standings.

Henny Porten gives a solid performance for the most part as the female protagonist here, with some particularly good shots in which she just sits and stares blankly without the need of any title cards to fill in her feelings (see above). Fritz Kortner fares far less well opposite her though; the way he tends to madly wave his hands (and chairs) in the air when emotional is far too theatrical. It is also very hard to sympathise with his unethical actions. Whatever the case, the film benefits perfectly moody sets designed by The Man Who Laughs's Paul Leni.

While this silent film is full of melodrama with Alexandra Sorina especially over-the-top as the pianist's distressed wife, the psychological horror angle is riveting. Conrad Veidt is fine in the lead role and his nightmares are haunting as all his fears and worries about his hands materialise with some excellent dissolve editing special effects as giant arms reach down to him and as large disembodied faces laugh at his woes. The film runs a little long with much more time dedicated to the melodrama than horror, but this remains an engaging display of human anxiety.

7. don't change your husband (demille 1919)
8. ich möchte kein mann sein (lubitsch 1918)
9. le avventure straordinarissime di saturnino farandola (perez 1913)

born on board a ship that soon sinks, cast to the waves by his parents, young saturnino is raised on an island by a colony of apes. feeling an outcast as he never grows a tail, he leaves to embark on a series of adventures. after becoming a ship's captain, he meets a beautiful girl whilst scuba diving.

Image

sadly she's eaten by a whale, which runs aground and is sold to an aquarium in melbourne. when the whale vomits her up, it's keeper refuses to release her and thus begins the aquarium war. saturnino returns at the head of an ape army and frees his lost love, still in scuba gear. i guess she was part of the exhibit

Image

now married, the pair travel to siam to recover a sacred white elephant, where they are briefly captured by amazons! mrs saturnino engineers their escape and they are made fabulously rich on their return of the idol. next up the headwaters of the nile, where they rescue some princesses mid sacrifice. oh but you have to see saturnino's lion hunting suit

Image

after a visit to america to divert niagara falls, and be captured by indians, there's a fantastic air battle with phileas fogg

This F.W. Murnau melodrama does not really focus on solving its central mystery, instead spending copious time on unnecessary subplots (fox hunting in the rain) and awkward comic relief (a gluttonous kitchen boy). The baroque mansion interiors are the film's best asset, but the film boasts disappointingly drab visuals in general. There is one effective nightmare scene with a disembodied clawed hand (see above) but otherwise it is hard to believe that the same visual artist behind this film would deliver the breathtaking Sunrise a mere six years later.

Strong batch there, I would definitely recommend Rayon de soleil to everyone here. Beautiful cinema. I have not seen Eternal Love. Will make it a priority. Have you seen Herbier's Little Devil May Care btw?
I second Gloede's recommendation for 'Rayon de soleil', and I would pair it not only with 'Menschen am Sonntag' with which it is often associated, but also with Carné's short 'Nogent, Eldorado du dimanche' - they would make for a very sunny and sensual triple-treat!

Yes, I've seen L'Herbier's 'Le diable au coeur' and love it; a slightly less formalist film than his other silent masterpieces, warmer too, with an unforgettable Betty Balfour at its heart.

Hope you find Lubitsch's dreamlike venture into pure amour fou as exhilarating as I did.
