I've sent funky a PM here as well (previous was on iCM). He has been online today.

I already have received two options from Lilarcor and Mochard.
tommy_leazaq, sebby and hurluberlu can do so as well if they want (by sending a PM). This could speed up the process.

It's two big-hitters from Europe/ROW and two lesser countries of the same in each group. Random draw in Round of 16 onwards.

First let's see how the countries are divided over the world and then we'll see how to make pots.

If we would start the 1st of December, managers would have roughly one month to select the movie for round 1. Is that enough?
Is it really necessary with a whole month? I guess most (all?) managers have at least one movie in mind when chosing which country to manage.

Some pick an obscure country and investigate, watch multiple movies etc......

Fair enough.

Is there a «no movies from 2019-20» rule or do we just use common sense? And do you have a list of all the previous WC movies? :)

No rule about year of release, but common sense says it's not in line with the purpose of the cup to select a big movie that was just released. If you want to select something underseen from 2019, I have no problems with that.

I understand not wanting to finish at Christmastime (though needing to watch two films next year instead of 4 or more this year seems like a no-brainer, especially since the films chosen in the final have often already been seen by a fair number of folks), but if we're going to start before January, could we at least extend the duration of the first few matches to allow for more participation? I think starting December 1st will be fine if we're given more time. We can revert to a regular schedule in mid-Jan, and still finish before mid-Dec 2020.

Just doing some research for the country I want to manage. I just wanted to see what the general consensus was for picking movies was. Is most peoples preferred method to choose a country they are familiar with or not that knowledgeable? Then are the movies generally chosen by the manager something they have seen personally or are going in blind with a movie that they think will be good? What other advice could be given to a new manager from those that have been before when making their choices?
I think most managers choose countries that they're familiar with, but not always. Some managers only have 1 movie in mind when they pick a country, with the intention of discovering more movies later.

Managers pick movies that they've seen, usually a movie that they like and/or expect other participants to like.
Ok well I have looked through my <1000 checks and have nailed it down to 22 countries (minus the US and UK of course) that I would be happy to give a movie from. Some are just 1 movie but if I make it through to the next round than I can work on that. Now just to see what countries are nibbled up before I get a chance, making my choice smaller due to those countries no longer being available.

Export your checked films and sort/filter out those under 1000 checks.

I just went to my checked movies on iCM (well actually just my favourites) and sorted them by checks.

Use this link https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/che ... checks&asc and just check a movie here and there to make sure you haven't gone past the 1000 mark

I think I could do that. I could remove the overlap between match 1A and match 1B for example. The schedule for 4-movie-matches last time was 4 weeks per match with 1.5 week overlap.

By removing the overlap between 1A and 1B:
1A: Dec 1st - Dec 29th
1B: Dec 29th - Jan 26th
Final ends at Dec 10th
(or maybe start one week later, so Christmas is around the middle of 1A)

Or by making 1A one week longer:
1A: Dec 1st - Jan 5th
1B: Dec 26th - Jan 23rd
Final ends at Dec 7th.
(or maybe start one week later, so Christmas is around the middle of 1A)

The downside of starting later could be, that we end up with the final around next Christmas if we have some delay during the process.

I think both options would work (slight preference for first option), as they give enough time to those who will be largely offline for 2-3 weeks during Christmas to still catch the films before or after with enough time. I agree with not wanting to start later in order to avoid clashing with Christmas next year.

As for my pick, I want India to participate in this competition and at the same time I would love to see someone else manages India this time as I have had the opportunity two times before and tbh, Im getting tired of my own selections of Indian films so it'd be refreshing to see someone else's take :) Also by seeing the number of new aspiring managers and the reduced number of countries, I don't really mind not managing this time.

So, I'll have a conditional pick. If India is not among the first 31 picks, I'll have the 32nd slot and choose India. If India is picked by someone else by then, I'll take leave from my managerial duty in this season.

I know this is making things unnecessarily complicated, but someone has to make Joachim's life bit difficult as a WC host as per usual norm. Since it's not going to be Monty, by everyone's surprise, I'll take the honors :P

Next:

Lilarcor picks Sweden.
sebby picks Poland.
Mochard picks France.

hurluberlu is the last of the eight to make his pick. Once he has posted his choice here, everybody has 24 hours to pick a country. Simply post here which country you want to manage. Pick a country that nobody else has picked yet.

Maybe it's the "Hide my online status" option. Same for klaus78, for instance.

Cheers, tommy! Hope that it sets an example.

Please, guys, diversity! Different kind of movies for the same countries!
I'm more for different countries; can't believe someone suggested Thailand for the 4th time, while so many Soviet ex-republics have been overlooked. <_<

Mario, can you easily post a list of countries that......?
a. competed all 3 times.
b. competed twice.
c. competed only once.

Some people weren't around when we had the first (and second) cup, so not everyone is aware of which countries had their spotlight yet and which not.

Thanks. I would appreciate that. By my count, there are still 13 countries that I would be interested in manage that I have not been taken yet... so anything that would help to narrow down which region I should pick would be great.

hurluberlu picks Italy.

After this post signing up as manager is open for everybody. You can choose one country that hasn't been chosen yet. Signing up is open for at least 24 hours. If we reach more than 32 countries in 24 hours, there will be some poll. If there are less than 32 countries after 24 hours, we'll continue till we have 32 countries and then signing up will be closed immediately.

You can choose by just posting here.

If India isn't picked, it will be the 32nd country managed by tommy.

Mexico for me.

Edit: I have a handful of movies that I feel comfortable to use in this competition and I have a handful of interesting stuff on my watchlist. But if anyone have some movie suggestions, feel free to PM me.
:)

I'll try to keep the list of chosen countries up-to-date at the bottom of the OP.
