iCM Forum World Cup - season 4 - manager sign-up thread

#1

Post by joachimt » October 18th, 2019, 8:16 pm

Welcome to the fourth season of iCM Forum's World Cup for movies. This is a tournament which starts with a bunch of countries for which movies are selected. After watching the movies, the watchers vote for them. Based on the votes countries proceed to the next round and new movies will be picked for that new round. This continues till we have a winning country.

After some discussion here, here, here and here, we decided the following.
- 32 countries
- First round will have 8 groups of 4 countries. The top 2 of each group proceed to the next round.
- Second round till final will have head-to-head matches.

The rest will remain the same.
- Each country will be managed by one manager who'll pick the movies.
- Everyone is allowed to manage a country.
- Managers can pick any country from the world. (Mario will probably keep track of "big countries" or countries that did well previously that haven't been picked yet)
- We'll start with one country per manager. If we have less than 32 volunteers, a second country can be picked by some (we'll see later how we'll do this, if it's necessary).
- Movies should have less than 1000 checks on iCM.
- Movies are shorter than 180 min.
- A director can't compete twice in the same season for a country.
- Movies from previous seasons are not allowed.
- In case of managers with multiple countries, no manager will compete himself.
- .........am I forgetting something here?

Schedule, pace and starting date will be decided later.

First step: Quarter finalists from season 3 get first pick
These eight users can pick a country they want to manage. The order presented here is the order in which they are allowed to pick. If you don't want to manage this year, that's fine of course.

02. filmbantha
03. funkybusiness
04. tommy_leazaq

Yes, you can. You first have to wait for the eight people mentioned above. After they selected their countries, anyone can pick a country. Then you just have to post here saying which country you want to manage. Once we reach 32, signup is closed.

I'd be in but only for Belgium though. I can't say I've seen enough movies from other countries with less than 1000 checks to warrant a manager position.
If it is already taken, no problem.
I saved Latin, what did you ever do ?

How long do we have to wait for Monty? Knowing him, he'll wait until the last possible second, just because.

I hope I don't have to set a deadline. If he doesn't respond, I'll send him a reminder tomorrow and mention a deadline.

Btw, when hurluberlu has made his pick, signup will be immediately open for everybody else. It will be open for at least 24 hours, so everyone in each timezone has a chance. If after those 24 hours there are more than 32 countries, we will have a vote on the countries. If after those 24 hours there are less than 32 countries, we'll continue until we reach 32 and then it will close automatically.

Just doing some research for the country I want to manage. I just wanted to see what the general consensus was for picking movies was. Is most peoples preferred method to choose a country they are familiar with or not that knowledgeable? Then are the movies generally chosen by the manager something they have seen personally or are going in blind with a movie that they think will be good? What other advice could be given to a new manager from those that have been before when making their choices?

I think most managers choose countries that they're familiar with, but not always. Some managers only have 1 movie in mind when they pick a country, with the intention of discovering more movies later.

Managers pick movies that they've seen, usually a movie that they like and/or expect other participants to like.

Does a manager need to have files for all the movies he/she picks?

As long as it's available online or on DVD, with English subs, I think it would be ok to pick it.

This indeed. As long as it is "available" to all (English subs if necessary), then it's fine.

Could we please start in January? The end of the year with Christmas and New Years is always so hectic and film-watching takes a backseat to spending time with family and friends (at least for me).

Agreed, probably an issue for many ICMers. I think it would also be nice for the managers to have some time to explore their chosen country before it starts.

I also think it's neater to have the 2020 iCM Forum World Cup to start in 2020. :folded:

Then better stretch the time for watching (add a few days to each of the round) and let us know all the 32 films earlier.

So perhaps give managers until mid-November to pick films and reveal the groups on 15th November? Then deadline for watching the first group of films somewhere in the middle on January?

I'll calculated the total duration of the tournament first. If we can finish it in 11 months or less, than it makes sense to start in January. If it's about 12 months it's either this Christmas or the next.

Guess what. I filled the schedule with the same pace as last season. I used a period of 1.5 weeks between the finish of one round and the start of a next round. That way if we start the tournament on January the 1st, it will be finished at December the 31st. :o

Thanks for doing the calculations. Just a suggestion, but if the first groups are revealed early (say 15th november), we might not need 1,5 weeks between the finish of one round and the start of the next round for the first group phase.

I agree it should not end during Xmas.

I'm not talking about time between matches, but the time between round 1 and round 2. So after match 1H, I'd give a pause of 1.5 weeks before starting 2A. The winning manager should have some time to consider his next movie. We could make it one week, but that would mean a manager only has 5 or 6 days to select a next movie. Most managers haven't got five movies lines up before the start.

If we would start the 1st of December, managers would have roughly one month to select the movie for round 1. Is that enough?
