The first few times I was thinking: How can they make money if they get someone else to pay for their bill? It took me a while to get that the waiter was into the scheme as well and they didn't actually eat any meal, so there was no bill to pay. I felt so stupid.
There was a brief scene showing them

I don't remember the order of things exactly, but I think that scene

didn't make me realize. I still thought: How can they get paid for having dinner and let someone else pay for it? There was another scene where the woman said something like "take it easy, we still have to drink coffee here for at least two hours". That's when I realized they were only having coffee.
I also didn't clue in until the scene that Armo mentioned, which I think took place after the one joachim mentioned. Still took me a while to figure it all out.

Saw Deveti krug two years ago when I was managing Croatia and considering it for my second round pick. Didn't feel like rewatching it again. It's an earnest tragic story that's good, but not great.

Filantropica has been high on my list for ages, so it's good to finally get around to watching it. It was pretty good, though at times I was a tad confused with what was going on with all the duplicitous schemes. Still, it was a decent black comedy, and if this film was the start of the Romanian New Wave that paved the way for some of my favourites, then I owe it that as well. I just wish the lead character wasn't so pathetic (though he did have some great moments, such as during the talk show).

Nomad was weird. Didn't really hold my interest, plus
Spoiler
I don't understand what happened in the hotel room. Was that the designer lady? Why was she in the same room? Was she a lesbian? Why did she whisper "I love you" on the phone? Also, the last 5 minutes were just ridiculous and spoiled any goodwill that had been building up within me.
The ennui of young lovers is occasionally interesting, but there was too much randomness going on for me to really enjoy it.

At this point it seems like Croatia's got this one in the bag, but I'll be happy if either Balkan nation wins this match. I don't think I've encountered a bad film from either country (yet).

1. ROM Filantropica [Philanthropy] - 7.5ish
2. CRO Deveti krug [The Ninth Circle] - 7.4
3. HKG Lie huo qing chun [Nomad] - 5.5ish

My favourite scenes from Filantropica is how the lead character handled that jerk, first on the barge and then later at the talk show. :D

1. Deveti krug (The Ninth Circle) - 1960 - France Stiglic
2. Filantropica (Philanthropy) - 2002 - Nae Caranfil
3. Lie huo qing chun (Nomad) - 1982 - Patrick Tam, Terry Tong

Nomad is like some weird HK version of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

Lovely round, one of my favorites of this edition of the world cup. Only good films, all strong 7s or weak 8 territory for me.

1. Deveti krug (The Ninth Circle)
2. Lie huo qing chun (Nomad)

I was planning to finish Filantropica tonight and watch Nomad as well, but I ended up updating my CV and submitting a letter of application. Sorry, Romania! I probably would have helped you.

What do you mean? The votes are very clear. Not a lot of variation. 11 of 29 people voted in the order of the ranking.

Image Deveti krug: 1.483 (44-14)
Image Filantropica: 1.931 (31-27)
Image Lie huo qing chun: 2.586 (12-46)

Number of #1-votes
Image Filantropica: 9
Image Deveti krug: 17
Image Lie huo qing chun: 3

Number of #3-votes
Image Filantropica: 7
Image Deveti krug: 2
Image Lie huo qing chun: 20

Those are very straightforward results.

Personally I don't understand why anyone would vote Lie huo qing chun at #1, so I think those three votes are three too many.

Deadline is over. This is the final ranking. Croatia wins. Congratulations to Mochard. Also thanks to clemmetarey and Smoover for their picks and the 29 people who voted this match.

It looks like it's mostly the perfect score participants who keep playing. There are 26 users who voted in every match. The other three votes this round are Gorro (19/20), Fergenaprido (18/20) and metaller (17/20). Casual voters seems to have become non-existent. Probably. When I said "soft porn without boobs" they were probably disappointed there weren't any boobs in it.

I enjoyed Nomad very much as a pivotal film of HK New Wave. I could appreciate the efforts of Tam to represent the Youth of the time, its energy and dreams confronted to the society, while exploring new forms of cinema (especially in shot composition and editing). Nomad has a lot in common with French New Wave Rozier's Du côté d'Orouët and Godard's Pierrot le Fou I thought. You might have to get over the typical local kitsch to enjoy it but if you pay attention, it is thematically a lot richer than the average 80s HK rom-com. The title comes from Deleuze's "Nomad Thoughts" about Nietzsche and personal accomplishment… tells a lot about the ambition of the filmmaker. If you only saw a soft porn… your loss…

The film which is ranked at the top gets 2-0 from each voter, the second 1-1, and the last 0-2.

I thought the English title came from the name of the boat (which didn't seem significant enough for the movie to be named after it, but I've seen stranger titles).

Sorry for answering late, it wasn't the HK movie for me, i watched it last year, and i'm always up for some HK 80's stuff, it was because of final exams week and me not watching movies
