Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 3 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 3 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Oct 21st
Countdown till deadline

The country that ends at 1st place proceeds to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Ranked by lowest average ranking.
- In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
- In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between all three movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? Fewest #3-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension (except when the tie is only between #2 and #3).
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament works
We start with 48 films from 48 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 12 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 24 remaining countries will be divided into 8 groups of 3. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each group proceeds to the next round. The final 8 countries compete one-on-one in the quarter finals (with a new movie of course) and so on till the final.

Not a fun match for me. Lake Tahoe might have done better if it wasn't for the constant black screen used.

Burkina Faso has a decent chance. I expect it'll be my #1 as well, but I'll rewatch the others at least partially.

1. Tilaï 7/10
2. Natvris khe 7/10
3. Lake Tahoe 5/10

I only had to watch Natvris khe from this group. I felt like a lot was lost to me in the translation, not getting the humor, references and whatever. I was going to rate it lower if it wasn't for the last 15 minutes, which were great.
I watched Lake Tahoe a few months ago and I remember being bored.

Well, while it is still to early to tell, Burkina Faso could become this season’s dark horse, just like Chile and Egypt.

2. Lake Tahoe - 6/10
3. Natvris khe - 5/10

So I'm watching Tilai and I'm like this looks familiar, maybe I should have checked if I had seen it already! Either way I upped my rating from a 6 to a 7. I thought it was the best of the 3 entries in this round.

Fun fact: I actually live about a 2.5 hrs drive from Lake Tahoe and I got married there!

Honestly, Georgia should go with Repentance (1984). It is a more all-rounded Tengiz Abuladze work.

1. Lake Tahoe (This is one my favorite contemporary Mexican films. I love the everyday-ness of it and the focus on the not special things of daily life. This is something very present in contemporary Mexican cinema, the quotidian. That everyday stuff that happens that we go through without even noticing it. It was, also, seen to a degree in the Uruguayan film and started in Mexico around Amores Perros)

2. Natvris khe (An interesting yet convoluted movie. Too many interesting characters not enough focus on any of them)

3. Tilai (I know everyone here has been loving it and I definitely think is worth watching but there's nothing special. I've only seen a few handfuls of African films but this is the weakest I've seen so far)

This is an exaggeration. Lots of people don't post ratings or comments, just the rankings. Among the ones that posted ratings, I noticed quite a few mediocre ratings, also by people who ranked it first. This is not a very strong match.

That might be the case "loving" might be an overstatement, but as I believe you posted the majority has ranked Tilai #1 and there are few #3 on top of it being a runaway winner. I know most don't post reviews and a lot have considered this a weak round but it's still blowing the competition, meaning=people love Tilai wayyyyyyyy more than they do the other two.

P.S. This is a film forum, there should be discussion. Pointless rankings kind of mean nothing. People should feel strongly about the way they vote and try to convince others or defend their opinions. As mentioned in another thread, WC films are a way of promoting films some people feel strongly about and that should be reflected in the way they speak about them. This forum shouldn't be mere arbitrary ranking of films; we all have a reason we voted the way we did.

Sure, it would be nice if everyone at least wrote a few lines about what they thought of the movies.

I wrote a few lines myself, but not about Tilaï, because I haven't seen it recently, so it's hard to give opinions about it. It probably wouldn't have gotten my vote in other matches, but Natvris khe was mediocre (except for the last 15 minutes) and hard to follow and Lake Tahoe was just boring. I don't get why people would like that movie.

1. Natvris khe

I thought this would go full Kusturica at a point with the animals, the cleavage and oddball characters. Which would not have been bad, as I find most of his films funny, but I am also pretty satisfied by the turn of the film to something melodramatic. It gives the film an extra dimension. Not sold on all the side characters such as Pupala, like Joachim says it could be a translation issue.

2. Tilaï

Also a strong film, in my top 20 list of African films. RIP Idrissa Ouedraogo.

3. Lake Tahoe

I tend to like slow films AND coming of age stories, but this doesn't do much for me.

1. Tilai
2. The Wishing Tree
3. Lake Tahoe

All in the 6.5 to 7 range. I like African landscapes so Tilai gets the preference. Wishing Tree was having great visuals. Tahoe did nothing wrong but just didn't offer anything new to me.
