This is match 2A of the third season of iCM Forum's Film World Cup.

Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 3 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 3 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Sep 9th
Countdown till deadline

The country that ends at 1st place proceeds to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Ranked by lowest average ranking.
- In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
- In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between all three movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? Fewest #3-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension (except when the tie is only between #2 and #3).
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament worksShow
We start with 48 films from 48 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 12 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 24 remaining countries will be divided into 8 groups of 3. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each group proceeds to the next round. The final 8 countries compete one-on-one in the quarter finals (with a new movie of course) and so on till the final.

1. The Last Command - 8/10
2. Alexandre le bienheureux - 7,5/10
3. Strawman - 7/10

I thought Alexandre was going to be the silliest movie of this round, but it used the comedy to make a solid case for freedom (from the rat race) in the end, while Strawman used a quite serious setting to play around with silly Japanese guys, loads of kids and shenenigans with a bomb… maybe some stuff got lost in translation (the subs could be better) but it felt too much like a kids movie for me. Still well made though… but Last Command is clear winner here.

2. The Last Command - 8.1
3. Dao cao ren - 7.2

Didn't expect to like Alexandre le bienheureux this much. Thanks for the pick! Straight into a high placement in my <400 list.

I was thinking the same thing.. It's definitely going to be on there (I've looked at a lot of the lists, and quite a few people have included it), the question is, at this point, how high? That was before the World Cup.

Luckily for France it was selected for group A, because that one finishes before the 500<400-deadline.

Nah, I'm sure it would've already been on the list regardless. With it's World Cup draw, it's just going to be higher than it would've been otherwise.

Not so fast. Last season we had a movie with five #1-votes in a row from the first five voters and it lost and still even isn't an official check. Anything is possible in this game.

They didn't back the same movie however and Alexandre still got 2nd both times. Mutually exclusive votes.

Barring something unforeseen, this should be my first World Cup round I've voted in. I may be an unpredictable wild card here...

I fully expected to rank The Last Command last while watching it (it was the last film out of the three I watched and the film bored me within the first few minutes)... but then I reached the ending. Better than a scarecrow but can't beat the dog.

1. Alexandre le bienheureux 7/10
2. The Last Command 6/10
3. Dao cao ren 6/10

Man that animated gif from Strawman posted above could have really used some spoiler tags. Kind of took the suspense out of the film.

1. 稻草人 [Strawman] (1987)
2. Alexandre le bienheureux [Alexander] (1968)
3. The Last Command (1928)

Copied from hurluberlu's post. Thanks.

Extremely strong round!
The Last Command is my favorite (it can easily beat 90% of the films in Round 1), but the opponents are too nice, and I am a fan of comedy.
I know Joachimt made the draw randomly, but it is interesting to see the similarities between Strawman and Alexander. Both feature a farmer/farmers as the lead, with a group of villagers being the supporting characters.
However, there is more content in Strawman, though I agree that some of them might be lost due to the poorly translated English subtitles (and I who made the subs is the one to blame, sorry for my poor English. Still, I hope Strawman can end up like Back to Back, Face to Face.) Strawman is actually a black comedy and satire on the mindset and value of Taiwanese people during the Japanese occupation period, and in fact it is the film inspiring Jiang Wen's Devils on the Doorstep.

ps. Alexander will be an addition on my 500<400 list. Luckily the match starts before the deadline of the list submission.

Yeah that is the idea, "bienheureux" is the adjective used for blessed in French versions of the bible: Blessed are the pure in heart… it is part of the irony.
