Thanks PGonzalez. I understand a bit more where the cinematic value is in. I read the film in a much more pessimistic way.

thank you for that translation -- it's beautiful! i've no doubt there's a lot that's lost to non-portuguese speakers in monteiro's work. i wouldn't call him a comedian exactly. there's a huge melancholy there. also he's an absolute master of framing. every shot like a painting in this perfect work

I'm actually a bit surprised with how the voting turned out. I was hoping for some fourth places, but not as many as I've seen. I always thought that even if the film was lost in translation, the sheer beauty of the framing (as you said, every shot is mesmerizingly perfect) would be enough to pull it through. It seems it wasn't :P

I've seen two out of four, but tomorrow I'm leaving for holidays. I'd hate to lose my perfect attendance so far, but I'm not sure if I'll have time to watch the other two films.
Just letting you know.

1. Kuei-mei, a Woman
2. Pirosmani
3. The Great Journey
4. Recollections of the Yellow House

João de Deus' next adventure is a favorite of mine (it would have been an easy #1 in this group), though.

I enjoyed all the films in this round and found it really difficult to decide between the top two. I can't imagine that I would have ever watched these otherwise so thanks to the managers for selecting them.

1. Wo zhe yang guo le yi sheng
2. Pirosmani
3. Le grand voyage

It's been two days since I watched all. And whenever I thought of the rankings, I came up with different combinations each time. That's how I equally liked these films. All are "Good" films (but nothing broke the "favorite" threshold for me, though). Thanks to all the managers involved.

This current ranking is what I have in my mind right now, and might change in the very next minute. Ideally, I should vote at the very last minute possible but the chance of me coming here before deadline again is very slim so I'm going with this rank right now.

1. Recollections of the Yellow House
2. Kuei-mei, a Woman
3. Pirosmani
4. The Great Journey

1.Wo zhe yang guo le yi sheng (Taiwan)
2.Le grand voyage (Morocco)
3.Recordações da Casa Amarela (Portugal)
4.Pirosmani (Georgia)

Taiwan is a clear winner, Morocco/Portugal/Georgia is a virtual 3-way tie.

One of the closest rounds ever for me. Solid choices, but I wasn't super impressed by any of the films, while all had their distinct advantages. I have an easpecially hard time ranking the Georgian and the Portugese film, as they are really similar in nature, althoguh one with a likeable and the other one with an unlikable protagonist.

1. Wo zhe yang guo le yi sheng / Kuei-mei, a Woman - 7/10: Nice story about a rather strong willed woman and her family story. 7/10
2. Recordações da Casa Amarela: Poetical film about a loner, who is a quite a cynical asshole drifing through life, in the search of some meaning and a bit guided by his libido. Has some essay film touches, which I always greatly appreciate, as well as the sarcastic tone of the thing. 7/10
3. Pirosmani: Story about a likeable outsider artist that drifts a bit through life, just wanting to leave a bit of a legacy. Very striking mis-en-scene, fitting for a film about a painter. 6.5/10
4. Le grand voyage: This story about a boy driving his father to a pilgrimmiage to Mecca was a bit formulaic, but still solidly executed. The groth in character didn't feel very earnest, but rather because that's what a film has to do at such points. 6.5/10

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Sorry, guys, but you'll have to extend the deadline by a week to get my vote. I really did anything I could to get all films watched before my holidays, but I didn't manage in the end and I only have my wife's tablet here, without any download options.

Just be sure to watch Pirosmani eventually if you haven't, even if it's just for fun :)
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

So Recordadoes picked up two 3rd places after all, on 2nd page. It'd be cool if it placed 3rd without a matching vote

Afraid I'm not going to make the deadline this match either. Too much going on this month. But I will watch all four films, probably next week when I'm visiting home and have more free time. Hopefully I can get the next match in time as well, but it will be tight.

We'll count it. It's not going to even affect anything much. Of course there's a possibility a vote may affect eventual pot placement.

The timer's counting the other way.

I was working at the deadline. If he didn't add anything to his post, I wouldn't even have noticed mjf314 was late. Anyway, it doesn't really matter for the results, so I'll count it (doesn't mean I'll be counting Gershwin's vote when he comes back from holiday).

Result without mjf314's vote:
Image Pirosmani: 2.025 (79-41)
Image Wo zhe yang guo le yi sheng: 2.275 (69-51)
Image Recordações da Casa Amarela: 2.675 (53-67)
Image Le grand voyage: 3.025 (39-81)

Result with mjf314's vote:
Image Pirosmani: 2 (82-41)
Image Wo zhe yang guo le yi sheng: 2.268 (71-52)
Image Recordações da Casa Amarela: 2.683 (54-69)
Image Le grand voyage: 3.049 (39-84)

Georgia and Taiwan proceed to the 2nd round. Congratulations to tarr and mjf314. Also thanks to Pgonzalez and jvv for their work and the 41 people who voted this round.
