Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 4 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 4 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Mar 4th
Countdown till deadline

The countries that end at 1st and 2nd place proceed to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Ranked by lowest average ranking.
- In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
- In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between three or four movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? Fewest #4-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension (except when the tie is only between #3 and #4).
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament worksShow
We start with 48 films from 48 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 12 groups of 4. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 24 remaining countries will be divided into 8 groups of 3. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each group proceeds to the next round. The final 8 countries compete one-on-one in the quarter finals (with a new movie of course) and so on till the final.

1. Pădurea spânzuraţilor [Forest of the Hanged] (1964)
2. Megáll az idő [Time Stands Still] (1982)
3. 25 watts (2001)
4. Splish Splash Love (2015)

Splish Splash Love was the worst thing I've seen in 2017.
My father didn’t have the skill of a professional cameraman. The result? Avant-garde cinema.

Was afraid so. You told that when the movie was revealed as a WC entry. I hoped you would be honest enough to finish it. Not really fair to vote for a movie if you've only seen half of it.

1. Padurea spânzuratilor 6/10
2. Splash Splash Love 5/10
3. 25 Watts 5/10
4. Megáll az idö 4/10

I did not expect Splash Splash Love to be in my top two, but the others were even worse ^_^ I would be surprised if South Korea advances because I feel like Splash Splash Love was not a good nomination choice. Although, it is the most memorable film out of this group. I'm not going to go into detail about the other films because they're more meh'able than memorable.

I've seen at least two films in each of the first round matches (there's only 7 films I still need to watch), so I can say that all the other matches have at least one film I rated higher than 6/10, thus this is without a doubt one of the worst matches for me.

Oh come on! Even the russian subber translated this line as this:

Antitank Antiquarian, as my grandfather, as my father, in Vienna, in the basement of the house...

My toddler-level romanian is coming handy :whistling:

1. Padurea spânzuratilor (1965) 7/10

2. 25 Watts (2001) 5/10
Maybe my rating was a bit harsh, it was quite decent. It wouldn't change its rank though.

3. Megáll az idö (1982) 5/10
I lost interest after the first half.

4. Splash Splash Love (2015) 5/10
Very ballsy choice.

LOL I'll see about that.

Almost finished going through the subs for Padurea, only managed less than 1 hour yesterday, so was expecting that it would take me 3 days, but today it's much easier, though still somehow taking up most of the day. Took me too long to realize that the russian dub makes a bit more sense than the sub, so I have 3 versions now.

Well I tried but there's still so many places where neither version brings total sense to dialogue.
In some cases both have different things and neither seems definitely correct and most likely both are not.
Anyway even after watching it for 6-8 hours I cant say I like the movie and certainly dont think it belongs on DTC. :hmph: Although thats probably many movies for me.

Really poor effort by romanian subbers to bring their Cannes-winning movie to international audience.

If you find something in the first half making little sense, let me now and I'll consult the dub version. Also I just found a bunch more typos I missed, so fix if found! Also some timings seem to start just as the other ends. Subtitle edit doesn't paint them red, so I did nothing with that.
Timings were left untouched mostly.

Well, well! I just finished Splash Splash Love.

It's very saccharine, but besides it's just The Princess Bride meets Midnight in Paris, or something like that, tailor-made for 15 year old girls. I don't see why that would make it a bad movie. I guess it's even quite good for its standards. And the cinematography was solid.

Edit: and there's no way you can call this essentially worse than most Hollywood films. It's just aiming at a very mainstream and young public, but it does so quite efficiently.

Meh I'm all for silly movies mixing up the usual WC drama, but it's hard to find a good one. SSL was a typical community theatre TV production and way too long of course. There was the time when Italy went with that old people comedy (at least an official check then), then Mozambique and now this.

Lots of modern South Korean stuff, especially their music, is just mainstream American stuff that people like more because it's foreign.

EDIT: I mean hell, they even have laws against communism in South Korea. Can't get more American than that.

Yeah though the mini-series itself looks rather like a Hindi soap opera Bollywood type of thing. Only with Koreans.

1. Padurea spânzuratilor (Romania)
2. 25 Watts (Uruguay)
3. Megáll az idö (Hungary)
4. Splash Splash Love (South Korea)

Tough choices again. Thanks so much to tarr, mjf, clemmetarey, and toro for their submissions. It's been a pleasure.

Allow me to second that. It's pretty awful indeed - and don't get me started on those atrocious K-pop power ballads that are copiously featured in this train wreck. Gotta give Splishy Splashy one thing though - the production values are half-decent.

On a sidenote, I'm curious as to what convinced mjf this would make a strong contender with the users here...

I can't second it. It's not the worst I've seen in 2017, because I've seen it in 2018. :P
I have to admit there were some cute moments, but the whole thing was waaaaaay too long. In the end I was very close to not hitting the dislike button, because I enjoyed some moment, even though the music was horrendous. But then came the last 15 minutes. The movie was over, but it went on with some unnecessary romantic shots with even worse music. During the last minutes my wife walked in. She couldn't see the screen. I unplugged my headphone so she could hear the music. She immediately responded "OMG, that's awful. :yucky: Turn it off!!" I had to listen to that for 140 minutes. :(

Really, I tried going into this open minded. I had low expectations because of the first responses here, but I really tried to give it a fair chance. 4/10

Still need to see Padurea and 25 Watts. Seen Megall a while ago. 7+

Image Padurea spânzuratilor: 1.727 (25-8)
Image Megáll az idö: 2.182 (20-13)
Image 25 Watts: 2.273 (19-14)
Image Splash Splash Love: 3.818 (2-31)

So far it looks like Megall and 25 Watts will be battling for 2nd place.
