1. Buud Yam (Burkina Faso)
2. Ne okreci se sine (Croatia)
3. Gavaznha (Iran)
4. Kholodnoe leto pyatdesyat tretego (Russia)

No strong favorites in this group, but high average level.

1. Ne okreci se sine (Croatia) - 8/10
2. Buud Yam (Burkina Faso) - 7/10
3. Kholodnoe leto pyatdesyat tretego (Russia) - 7/10
4. Gavaznha (Iran) - 6/10

Ne okreci se sine - Maybe because it is also centered around a father-son relationship, but this reminded me of Bicycle Thieves
Buud Yam - Plays out very much like a fairy tale
Kholodnoe leto pyatdesyat tretego - It was quite clear from the beginning who the hero of the story was going to be
Gavaznha - So much misery, rather depressing movie

I dunno how Joachim counts & adds additional votes to average ranking unless he goes from the beginning each time, which I'm lazy to do now.

Why? Your vote should have less influence than mine and Arthur's.

Quite a tight match, except the Russian entry. I just couldn't get in tune with it.

Excel. I only put in the new votes and the rest is a matter of lots of formulas.

Adding tarr's vote:

Average ranking
1. Image Ne okreci se sine: 2.15 (37-23)
2. Image Buud Yam: 2.45 (31-29)
3. Image Gavaznha: 2.55 (29-31)
4. Image Kholodnoe leto pyatdesyat tretego: 2.85 (23-37)

Tie-breakers, although they are not needed at the moment:

Head to head
Image Kholodnoe leto pyatdesyat tretego - Image Gavaznha: 7 - 13
Image Kholodnoe leto pyatdesyat tretego - Image Ne okreci se sine: 7 - 13
Image Kholodnoe leto pyatdesyat tretego - Image Buud Yam: 9 - 11
Image Gavaznha - Image Ne okreci se sine: 8 - 12

Number of #1-votes

Kholodnoe leto '53 7/10
Ne Okreci Se Sine 7/10
Gavaznha 7/10
Buud Yam 5(.5)/10

pretty arbitrary, and it's been a long time I've seen Russia, and the other two are low 7ish and pretty tied

I finished the sub (spent the whole day+ on it)
If someone will proof it that'd be dandy

"Knowing - feeling, more likely - that father is one of the most important and loving persons in the life of a boy, especially when he grows up and when he's about to find his own place in a complex, often contradictory world filled with danger, perplexed above all; feeling that in the times of war conflict and revolution being alone means being nobody - engineer Novak sets out to find his son. Once he sees him, he's all overwhelmed by joy: here's the being without whose closeness and intimacy life has no warmth or sense.
But right then, in the moment of rare happiness, Novak is faced with the enormous pain by finding out that his son has taken a path of inhumanity, that he embraced the concept of crime, the skills of fierce and cynical murders. Beyond the newborn joy, doubts and despair accumulate. But even then, as well as later on, the plan that is to be realized is obstacled with many questions: "Should I just leave alone, or go together with my son? He's a little Nazi now. Is it worth a try at all?"
Exactly these questions will make the decision: he must not let his son fall into the hands of enemies of the human kind. Having his son again - that means offering this child a possibility to enter real life, which is a fight for happiness and well-being of others; to win him again as a human value. In other words, to save him for others and himself, save a personality and free spirit."

Most of the regular participants have already seen the films & voted. Though imperfect subs didn't bother this film to win affection more than other did, obviously.

The difference between 2. and 4. place is, on the other hand, so small that a couple of votes can change the rankings. :o

Холодное лето 53 года / Cold Summer Of 1953

It took a while for me to get into it, but once the prisoners took over the town, it got quite suspenseful. That being said, it's a bit predictable and doesn't have much that stands out on the technical side of things. Pretty good, overall.

Ne okreći se sine [My Son, Don't Turn Around]

I wasn't blown away by this either. It's very basic, in terms of filmmaking; certainly nothing groundbreaking about it. It does have a strong ending however, that hits pretty hard.

No change in ranking since my last update. Burkina Faso and Russia are just a bit closer together. Gap between #2 and #3 has become bigger. But still a lot is possible with more than two weeks left.

Russia is not close enough to participate in the battle. Needs quite a few votes to get back, but it's possible. With five more wins than Gavaznha, it's back.

I didn't really care for Buud Yam that much. It's far from terrible, but it's the weakest one for me so far. The music was very cool, though. I still have Gavazhna to see before I post my rankings.
