PeacefulAnarchy on Oct 22 2017, 07:00:00 PM wrote:How did the seeding/draw work last time?
It worked easier because there were 16 groups - Pot 1 were big-hitters, and the rest were seeded geographically by continents (crampled up together in a way that they fit the number of 16).

Now it's a problem because there's 12 groups, and to Europe objectively belong 8 slots in the Pot 1. But then there's roughly 16 countries left, and they have to be allocated to 12x12x12. How to do that?
That's why I suggested splitting it in four pieces, this time stronger batch of Europe / stronger batch of RoW / weaker of the Europe / weaker of the RoW.

Well, two countries pass the first round, so what it's not so important that each pot be perfect. What are your 8 objective Pot 1 Euro countries?
From a quick look at the countries these seem like reasonable Top 2 pots:

China (hurluberlu)
England (funkybusiness)
France (klaus78)
Germany (Lilarcor)
India (tommy_leazaq)
Italy (toro913)
Iran (zhangalan)
Japan (monty)
Poland (sebby)
Spain (beavis)
Russia (blocho)
USA (filmbantha)

Argentina (RBG)
Brazil (Gorro)
Canada (Armoreska)
Czechia (Carmel98)
Hong Kong (Smoover)
Mexico (Daviddoes)
Serbia (Mario Gaborović)
South Korea (mjf314)
Sweden (PeacefulAnarchy)
Turkey (XxXApathy420XxX)

Thailand (Lonewolf2003)?
Hungary?
Denmark?

You don't need 12 Euro in pot 1, if there are 12 European countries in Pot1+Pot2 you can assign each euro country to a group, and then the remaining pot1 countries get drawn to the groups with pot 2 euro countries and vice versa, so you get the geographic split without France vs Japan being possible.

For a start, Romania belongs to Pot 2 rather than Thailand, and I'd rather have Czechia instead of China in the Pot 1.
I could split all four pots by subjective thoughts on quality by each nation, but I try to avoid that 'cause it incites the avalanche of discussions like "naaaah, the country X is stronger than Y", you know.

I agree with Mario in the way the pots should be distributed. That way, we can make it so that no group has more than 2 European countries in it.
The real World Cup does something similar: "teams from the same confederation will not be drawn against each other for the group stage, except for UEFA where each group can contain up to two teams."

In a different situation, suggested by PA, more than two European countries wouldn't be put together either... but that system requires some heavy conducting by the draw-maker. He'd be forced to move countries back and forth until he manages to 1) not put countries from the same continent into same group, and 2) not put two countries managed by the same person into same group.

I am following the thread but don't have an opinion about picking any country over any other. To me picking any country seems counter-productive, as I would not mind random country seedings.

It's all about what you prefer: new countries that haven't competed yet, or usual suspects again. Or maybe finding some balance between the two.

So do we have 9 clear leaders yet? Or is it really close?

So, basically there's four countries (7th-10th place) fighting over three slots, while the remaining seven have little chance to qualify?

Why do you think that? I didn't say how close #6 and #11 are. Only the top 4 is quite safe at the moment, but the rest clearly hasn't been decided yet.

I've just sent my ballot.

By the way, my message with a second country proposal seems to be still unread. Is that a forum glitch? The country I chose is in the list, though. But it could be that someone else picked it as well.

Actually I'd manage Puerto Rico had someone translated Los peloteros or Dios los cria.... :( But at least there's a good documentary available, called La Operación.

I voted it pretty high, just for laughs, mainly, but, it'd be interesting to see if it'd get though. In all seriousness, I'm not too worried about what goes through, or what doesn't, so, I didn't put too much thought into my votes. (Even if all the ones I gave low votes go through, I'm ok with it.)

I also didn't give Puerto Rico my lowest scores, quite the contrary. I'd really like to see the smaller, more obscure picks. Specifically because the world cup gives me an easy way to see stuff I wouldn't have put on my watchlist for ages otherwise. A softly forced way to expand my cinematic horizon.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

 I would need to know the films that managers have in mind, otherwise all countries are potentially attractive.

My own choice for Puerto Rico would be terrible (only one set, dialogue heavy, allegorical content...) :P

Something wrong here. :whistling:
 I changed my username, and dropped that corny underscore. I can submit a second ballot, if you so chose. (That's what happens when you copy and paste.)
I removed the underscore from the managerslist, so it's fine now.
And no, you don't get another vote. :P

Actually, as it's this close, perhaps a short extra round over the weekend is in order where we only vote on these three.

The 10th-ranked country closed the about 0.1 points gap thanks to the final voterss, impressive.

Cant wait for the reveal!

Smoover just broke the tie. The difference between #9 and #10 is now 0.028 !!!!

@Armo: I'll only do such a short poll, if there is a tie. If it's just a close difference, so be it.

Another poll? Just have a tie breaking criteria like most 5s or something and decide the winner. Getting tired of all these polls honestly
