I think an average of 8 movies per month is too much.

I already had a problem keeping up with 6.5 movies per month.
Slower means it would be 4 weeks with 1 week overlap or 5 weeks with 2 weeks overlap. I'll do some calculations about that....... later.
Round 1 with groups of 4, four pace-options:

1.
3 weeks per match, with 1 week overlap
Jan 1st - Jun 25
8.2 movies per month

2.
4 weeks per match, with 2 weeks overlap
Jan 1st - Jul 2nd
7.9 movies per month

3.
4 weeks per match, with 1 week overlap
Jan 1st - Sep 17th
5.6 movies per month

4.
5 weeks per match, with 2 weeks overlap
Jan 1st - Sep 24th
5.5 movies per month

Comparison with previous edition:
groups of 3
3 weeks per match, with 1 week overlap
Jan 1st - Aug 19th
6.3 movies per month

So maybe we should do something in between #2 and #3. We could do 4 weeks per match with 1.5 weeks overlap.
(that is if we indeed go with groups of 4)

something like that last option (even though I myself, and a small majority in the poll still, were for a slightly faster pace... :))

you could also just calculate it in days (maybe less confusing?). what about 25 days per match with 10 days overlap?

I would prefer a schedule where matches start and finish at the same day of the week each time, or maybe two different days of the week, like always on Sunday or Wednesday like last time in round 1.

If I count the two votes for "more than 2 movies a week" as "3 movies a week", then the average pace that's voted for is 1.63. I don't think there is enough ground to raise the pace too much. 8 movies a month might be a bit too fast.

Don't forget that you have seen more movies than most participants, so you had to watch less movies than most others.

3 movies a week is 12 movies a month right? or do I misunderstand something about that?
most votes go to 2 movies per week at the moment, which is about 8 a month in my book :)

Yes, you're right, but there are also people who want to go slower than last year. Most votes is not the deciding factor, I think. That's why I calculated the average.

Not really. Here's another way to look at the results: 15 out of 34 voters want a faster pace. That's a minority. 19 voters want the same pace or slower.

on average I watch about 50 movies/month
and when I dedicate myself to participate in a challenge or other forum-event, then I really go for it. so usually I'm able to see an entire round within a month or two
compared to that the pacing of the cup is reallly sloww
I actually hope I haven't seen a single movie yet this time, to get a bit more active, and make a lot of new discoverries

tonight I found a great entry for Brazil:
Viajo Porque Preciso, Volto Porque te Amo (2009)

I feel I haven't seen enough Brazillian cinema yet to make me a good manager for the country in the cup... but that movie almost makes me want to go for it!

I've seen only 5 Estonian movies (7 if you count co-productions)
a good example of a country that I would not consider to manage at all!
let somebody else, who has seen a considerable amount, tell me the undiscovered gems of that country!

Risttuules - 4,5
Spell to Ward Off the Darkness, A - 4,5
The Temptation of St. Tony - 4
Autumn Ball - 4
Free Range - 3,5
Somnambuul - 3,5
Jadesoturi - 3

You might wanna take it as your second country; I noticed that you gave 9/10 to Risttuules before, while Klass is my personal favourite. Seems to be that Mandariniid was one of the festival darlings back in 2013.
Anyway, there's an interesting flick from 1979, too:'Hukkunud Alpinisti' hotell http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204526/ so I guess this is one of the most interesting countries nobody has managed yet.

it's an interesting country for sure, but I'm no expert on it
Have seen Hukkunud also (very good 4 -star movie), although my database refers to it as a Sovjet movie
I have the DVD of Viimne Reliikvia by the same director in my collection, for years, still haven't got round to it...

Well, if you use the stats to your liking

You could just as well say that 24 want to faster/the same, while 10 wants it slower. Kinda pointless either way.

There are three categories. Faster, same and slower. With 15-9-10 votes. None of them has a majority, but the average vote is somewhat faster.

Personally I'm torn between option 2 and 3. The pace in 3 is better, but on the other side I don't feel like round 1 should last almost 9 months.

It's not my liking. I wouldn't mind a faster pace, because I normally watch 50 movies a month as well. I think the results reflect that votes are quite dispersed on this one and there isn't a strong ground for a faster pace. I'm afraid that raising the pace would mean loss of participants.

At least for me, I think that would be true. The ~6.5/month pace already frightens me a bit. But if there were ways to tie the World Cup into the official challenges, that would a) be awesome, and b) possibly encourage participation (I know it would for me).

Most people is a relative expression. On ICM i don't climb much in the rankings, recently even went down two spots, which makes it seem most people do.

But more seriously, i was just giving my personal perspective. If only the people who need a slower place because of many other commitments and not really being able to watch movies at all actually are heard, then any change in the format would be (equally) unfair. Sometimes a minority can be the loudest. I don't know if i am the minority or majority in this scenario, but since i like the world cup so much i thought my stance had a right to be heard aswell
.... But don't take all of the above that seriously either.... It's just my 2 cents is what i'm saying, not an atempt to offend or brag or something silly like that.

I watch about 10 movies a month, at the moment. But I still would find 2 movies a week for a tournament too many if I were at my average of before, about 20/month. I don't like my watching behaviour being mainly defined by others for more than half a year.

And of course, that's just my personal take. :)

Well, you can easily skip those groups that do not seem interesting to you, or you feel like it's unfair to you that you can't participate in every single one of them?? But hey, I know that if we're adjusted to tastes of few people who have busy personal life, this thing would be sluggish like a century and not many new films will be discovered by majority, ever.

And of course, that won't be the case only in 2018, but in 2020, 2035, eternally. You'll always be too busy to a lesser or greater extent.

Ditto.

Especially since I'm one of the ones who is least likely to have seen any of the films competing beyond my own selection(s).

Option 2 with 2 weeks overlapping is probably my preference. It's a bit too fast for me (I watch 25-30 films/month as of late), but with the overlap it would allow for significant bursts of activity in between when life gets hectic or when I have to travel for work.

Maybe the latter rounds could last shorter because they always consists of well-known films most people have seen. I don't think much, tough, say one day for QF, SF, 3rd place and Final match respectively. Only a suggestion.

Personally I agree and am also for less movies and shorter duration. But if we are going to do groups of 4, which seems likely, this seems like the best solution to me.

Doing a shorter duration cup would be the best way to keep attendance fairly stable throughout the event as well as attracting sufficient number of new participants.

Depends on what the pace is. If the pace increases significantly that will lessen the attendance (fewer people will be able to participate in each match) and scare of new participants.

I'm for the option that format-bitchin' regulars like Gershwin, monty, Lonewolf and PeacefulAnarchy take 5 countries to manage, and decide which films we others are going to watch coz I wouldn't even mind 128 countries at all.

Let's be generous.

I don't think having a huge Cup would work for the majority here (and I'm not even sure about having enough time to set aside for one myself over the coming months...). Sometimes less is more.

I don't get your question. I added all missing posters (out of 160 films in total) at CineMaterial later.
I don't get your reply.
I thought Mario was being pretty funny - for once.

I am aghast to see such a serious question treated with such sophomoric jocularity. Apologies can be made in a new thread or via PayPal.

Poop. :innocent:

I can't answer your original question - but I do remember that I joined the forum here during the middle of the last World Cup, and I was super confused and intimidated. Never actually participated in a single round, as I didn't know how or where to start. I want to participate as much as I can this time around, but I have a lot of other goals I'm also pursuing...
