Voting Rules:
- You must watch both films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Feb 8th
Countdown till deadline

The winner of the match is the film with the most #1-votes. Of there's a tie at the deadline, there'll be a three day extension.
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament worksShow
We start with 48 films from 48 countries.
The winning country from each match advances, and will be represented by a different film in the next round.
There are 5 rounds. In round 1 there are 3 films per match (only 1 advances). In rounds 2-5 there are 2 films per match.

For those interested, and available, 678 is on Amazon Prime.

2. 678 7/10

The English title of Il posto is The Job, maybe you can add that Joachim.

I don't vote for underdogs by default, but for films that left stronger emotional impact on me. I noticed there are some users here who less cherish that aspect, it's not all about technical prowess IMO.

However I have one big remark to Il posto:
Spoiler: click to toggleShow
why is that possible relationship not further developed? Did Olmi think it's unnecessary? Wouldn't it be an excellent move to enter the scene in which Antonietta and Domenico try to take a next step, but it ends as a failure? Only thing that happens is a casual talk in the hall.
678 was good, but I felt that the police investigation case should have been more developed; it all just ends in a rushed scene at the stadium. Additional 10 minutes would do good to the story.

Very easy round this.

1. Il posto (1961): 8.8
2. 678 (2010): 5.2 - It's about an important subject matter, it all of course is horrendous that this stuff really happens and Egyptian society is like this. The subject matter made my blood boil, but so does reading an news article about this. Execution wise this is poorly made.

While being devastated by them not ending up together at the party, I think the film ending like this perfectly suits the movie. It fits with the whole theme of end of youthfull dreams and hopes.

1. Il Posto
2. Cairo 678

Cairo 678 had a really good approach to a difficult subject matter and had an strong impact on me, it would have won several rounds for me personally. But Il Posto is one of my all-time favorites so...

I'm not a fan of either films. Il posto dialogue
ExamplesShow
"It's hot in here."
"No, it's not hot."

"I might go to night school."
"Where there's a will, there's a way."
"Yeah, that's true."
Still #1 for me because of the cinematography.

2. 678

678 is okay but very much a message movie. Il posto is a favourite. No difficulty in choosing, and I wonder if this could even be the first complete whitewash round - 10-0 now

It looks like Il posto is going to win this one.. What's the largest "come from behind" victory?

Don't know what you mean by "come from behind".

The biggest victory in the one-on-one-matches is Lucky Star which won from Suite Habana with 17 votes difference (25-8).

In the group face, the biggest difference between #1 and #3 is 26 votes:
ImageSzerelem - ImageIndependencia: 30 - 4
ImageSzerelem - ImageBorgman: 20 - 14
ImageIndependencia - ImageBorgman: 6 - 28

However, one movie managed to have a 30-votes difference with #3 but didn't even win its match:
ImageCourt - ImageCabascabo: 31 - 7
ImageCourt - ImageAraya: 21 - 17
ImageCabascabo - ImageAraya: 4 - 34

How far behind has a film been and still managed to win.
So after 15 votes it was Film A 11-4 Film B but at the end Film B ended up winning then it came from 7 votes behind to win.

Btw, if you're going by ratio, how would you solve it mathematically if Cairo 678 doesn't get any votes. ^_^

Yes 19-0 and 119-0 is same ratio but then it comes the number of winner's votes as second parameter.

I think it's dubious to speak about Egypt return 'cause we all know it won't happen.

Sure, but it's fun talking about it.

I just went through the results of this season. It hardly happened at all that a movie was more than 2 votes behind, but won after all. The biggest gap was in 1I:
ImageTange Sazen yowa: Hyakuman ryo no tsubo - ImageGamperaliya: 28 - 6
ImageTange Sazen yowa: Hyakuman ryo no tsubo - ImageLesnaya pesnya. Mavka: 24 - 10
ImageGamperaliya - ImageLesnaya pesnya. Mavka: 13 - 21
In the end it was a clear victory for Japan, but it started with a 5-0 advantage for Mavka.

#1 Il posto (1961, Ermanno Olmi)
#2 678 (2010, Mohamed Diab)

The test with an hour to compute 520*(1/4)*(1/5)*100 and some people actually getting it wrong, is entirely preposterous, unless it's meant to reflect juvenile hyper-stress in exam conditions where one'll mentally elongate the time required for what's actually a very easy and petty question to justify one's own shortcomings and vapidness..., or a satirical cue, or a comment that the characters are a few standard deviations to the left on the IQ distribution. Anyway, I just felt like I needed to point that out.

whom shall we find
Sufficient? who shall tempt with wand’ring feet
The dark unbottom’d infinite Abyss,
And through the palpable obscure find out
His uncouth way, or spread his aerie flight,
Upborn with indefatigable wings,
Over the vast abrupt, ere he arrive
The happy Ile?

Nur dein Auge – ungeheuer / Blickt michs an, Unendlichkeit!
Close the world. ʇxǝu ǝɥʇ uǝdO.
