Country Poll: India [CLOSED]

Post by Fergenaprido »

Overview of the Project
Schedule

Google Sheet

November 2023: India

Rules
* You may vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 titles.
* Feature films, documentaries, shorts, made-for-tv movies, direct-to-video movies, TV mini-series, and TV episodes from anthology series are all eligible.
* One country per film - IMDB is used as a guideline, but Fergenaprido will be the final arbiter for uncertain cases.
* All ballots are considered ranked unless otherwise stated.
* You must include a list of bare imdb URLs along with your ballot (preferably within a spoiler tag), otherwise your ballot will be disqualified.

Scoring
For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive the number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each successive title receiving one point less.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means #1 has 20 points, #2 has 19 points, and #20 has 1 point; a list with 5 titles means #1 has 5 points, #2 has 4 points, and #5 has 1 point.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted it the ballot had been ranked.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means each title would receive 10.5 points; a list with 5 titles means each title would receive 3 points.

Resources:
Indian films sorted by number of votes*
Indian films sorted by your rating on imdb*
Wikipedia article on Cinema of India

*due to imdb allowing films to be attributed to more than one country, many titles in this filter may be ineligible for this poll if India is not the primary country of production. Decisions about uncertain films will be listed in the second post of this thread. Try these filters that only include films with India listed as the first production country: All films & Films you've rated.

Many thanks to Rufus-T & gromit82 for the framework from the Year by Year polls, and to maxwelldeux for the Excel template.

I'm sorry this looks more like a "rank the director" post, I guess it shows my negligence in catching up on Indian cinema and my fanboyism for Ray.

I'll look into those later.

In the meantime, msainy, you can add a backup #21 just in case it's not eligible and you don't remember to come back and update your ballot later.

Indian film is close to my heart because when I was a kid they used to stick a tonne of Indian movies on UK's terrestrial Channel 4. It was at the time of a lot of migration from India. I often used to stay up watching them in wonder.

I will go with a top 10 for now. I had hoped that this would be in January so I could catch up on my Indian dvd pile over Crimbo, sux to be me. I will see if I can find time to catch up with childhood favourites like Chaudhvin Ka Chand.

O Horizon (2018 - The Otolith Group)
भुवन शोमे / Bhuvan Shome / Mr Shome (1969 - Mrinal Sen)

I apologize in advance for my ignorance of Indian films. I don't know very many films and only a few that I consider to be "good" or better.
Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of Bollywood cinema either.

01. Pather Panchali (Pather Panchali, 1955, Satyajit Ray)

Born in 1970! Unfortunately, I can't remember the first film I saw. The following three films that I saw when I was young left strong memories: Krakatit (1948, Vavra), Dance of the Vampires (1967, Polanski), Paper Moon (1973, Bogdanovich).

I'll look into those later.

In the meantime, msainy, you can add a backup #21 just in case it's not eligible and you don't remember to come back and update your ballot later.
I can't decide if The River is more French or American - French director, and was considered a foreign film in America, but American producer, and the production company has no country attribute. It's the only film of both the producer and the company. For the sake of argument, I'll consider it French, but it's not Indian, so not eligible for this poll.

Bride & Prejudice is British, so also not eligible for this poll.

All sources I can find indicate this is an American film; unless someone can find more information to the contrary, I'm going to consider this one ineligible.

Thanks for the clarification. I won't update my list just yet in hope I can slip in a few watches before the deadline. This thread already has a lot of promising recommendations :)

Hmm, looks like it has something to do with the new display of advanced search results. Thanks for the new link MD - I'll have to figure out how to get what I'm looking for with the new formatting, so that it still filters out tv shows and other ineligible titles.

Not sure what you're referring to; your ballot is fine. If you do watch some of those films, you can edit your post and add them to your ballot before the deadline if you'd like. :)

Titles, mentioned by me, were Soviet box-office wonders, with number of tickets sold is similar to numbers of Titanic/Star Wars in North America.

I may be missing something because I don't see those titles on anybody's list. Maybe the person edited their list after your comment?

Yeah possibly. But I still feel like Fergenaprido should add them in the OP as ineligible.

I didn't see them in a list, so I didn't look at them. No need to be rude about it.

Jago Hua Savera is not Indian at all, and I don't see it mentioned as such anywhere.
A River Called Titas is listed as an Indian-Bangladeshi co-production on IMDB, as a Bangladeshi film on Criterion, and with little production information listed elsewhere. There's not even a company credit on imdb and I had a hard time discerning any such credit on the version available online. The director himself was Indian, but that's not necessarily indicative of production, and I can't find concrete information on the producers (some of whom aren't even listed on imdb). If anyone has other information, I'd be glad to receive it, as I don't see a definitive answer either way.
