iCM Forum's Favorite Animated Feature Films; Nominations

iCM Forum's Favorite Animated Feature Films
Nominations
Image

We have done polls for our favorite animations 3 times before (in 2012, 2014 and 2019). But the results of those polls partly consisted of shorts and series. The last top 250 f.e. had 79 shorts and 3 series in it. Therefor the wish was to do a poll that focusses only animated features. And so we will.

A feature is a movie that is 40 minutes or more (this is the same definition we used for other polls, like debut features). The definition used for animated features by the Academy is;
An animated feature is defined by the academy as a film with a running time of more than 40 minutes in which characters' performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique, a significant number of the major characters are animated, and animation figures in no less than 75 percent of the running time.
Which seems as good a guideline to go by as any.

Deadline = 1 December 2023
  • Only animated feature movies of 40 minutes or more
  • Imdb-lists or iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, ask another user to help you out.)
  • Lists can be any length.
  • Each nominee can only be named once (of course)
  • Lists can be ranked or unranked or partially-ranked In a partially-ranked list, the top X films are ranked and everything after that point is unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked.

Some help:
Animated feature movies you rated on imdb
Like always it's up to yourself to decide the eligibility of all. Remember this is the poll for our favorite animated features movies, not our favorite movies with some animation in it. Also I noticed my results showed some with a run time of less than 40 minutes.
Participants (49)
Please check if your list is stated, ordered and linked correctly. And is set to public. For iCM lists you can also set it to "Friends" and befriend me. Don't edit your post, but make a new post or at least notify me of the edit in a new post.

Thank you for hosting another poll.
My list (ranked):

Not as diverse as I'd like it to be with the top 7 being Miyazaki's... I need to rewatch all those Disney classics to reassess them.

Thanks for running this! I was the person who suggested the idea last year when new poll ideas were being voted on, and in my head I imagined it as excluding both shorts AND episodic series that would otherwise be eligible (For example, a series like Gunbuster is only 180 minutes/6 episodes long or Over the Garden Wall, which is only 109 minutes/10 episodes long) because they weren't released as a singular "feature". I'm not the host so I'll leave it to Lonewolf to decide if he wants to officially exclude those or leave it to the participants discretion. Thanks again!

IMDB says L'horloge magique (1928) is 30 minutes, but it's actually 45 minutes.

Since they are not feature films, I don't see any reason or loophole to include miniseries.

I took this to mean that series would be ineligible:

Yes. Series, tv or mini, are ineligible. As far a I remembered we only discussed doing a poll without shorts when it was nominated. But I decided to exclude series too, cause they aren’t features. And I don’t want to have to check or discuss if I a series is episodic or meet any other criteria. So let’s keep it simple and do feature films only, like the title of the poll says. Shorts and series have enough opportunities to shine also.

Just to be sure (because I have quite a few high-ranking ones), anthologies are good, or are we excluding those too?

Yes they are eligible (if it is a movie that is longer than 40 min)

Didn't know I needed this poll, but randomly I DO actually often look at animation lists looking for features and get annoyed by shorts, series and miniseries being there. Excited

Will likely do a lot of views for this poll.

I came to animation late in life because I didn't like a lot of the high profile stuff so assumed it was all bad, Disney, Looney Toons, Pixar, Miyazaki, pretty much don't work for me. But when I got under that there was an Eden to be found.

A list i wanted to prepare a bit for, which actually throughout the year i actually kinda did given 88 of the 188 films i've seen this year are animation (though that includes probably quite some shorts as well).

I haven't gotten to around to everything i wanted to see, though i guess i could watch a few more this month (like 10). Mainly the newest ones that got some acclaim and a few animes/indie ones that i haven't gotten around too. And luckily, me not getting around to the mini-series doesn't turn out to be an issue, given they're ineligible anyways. Overall I more than doubled the amount of films i've seen from the last time we organized this list, and it's probably among the lists i have the highest completion rate for. I also surged a ton on the official animation/anime-related lists, so here we go.

Not sure if Timekeepers counts but it's listed as animation on IMDb so

You might be right. Or maybe I meant to vote for the horror movie with only 38 votes on IMDb that isn't even animated.

Born in 1970! Unfortunately, I can't remember the first film I saw. The following three films that I saw when I was young left strong memories: Krakatit (1948, Vavra), Dance of the Vampires (1967, Polanski), Paper Moon (1973, Bogdanovich).

In case you missed that, this is a feature-only list project and you need to remove the shorts of your list. ;)

Others have included shorts as well and I think there may be a tv series or two on at least one list. Hopefully they can be filtered out if they aren't removed.

I can and will remove all ineligible titles when calculating the result. But it will help a lot if people wouldn't include them in the first place!

That's exactly how I feel about animated films! I only like a handful of them (e.g. Perfect Blue, Akira, Have a Nice Day, Fantastic Planet). Can you recommend some films that worked for you? I'd like to see a few more before I vote here.

The Secret of Kells (2009 - Tomm Moore & Nora Twomey)
Gwen, le livre de sable / Gwen, the Book of Sand (1985 - Jean-François Laguionie)
うる星やつら2 ビューティフル・ドリーマー / Urusei Yatsura 2 Byūtifuru Dorīmā / Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer (1984 - Mamoru Oshii)
Isle of Dogs (2018 - Wes Anderson)
とつくにの少女 / Totsukuni no shôjo / The Girl from the Other Side (2022 - Yutaro Kubo)

What about "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"

In my humble selective perception is a significant number of the major characters are animated, and animation figures in no less than 75 percent of the running time.

@Lonewolf: what is your opinion on this?

Thanks

Well, he opened the thread with:
Lonewolf2003 wrote: November 1st, 2023, 11:23 am Like always it's up to yourself to decide the eligibility of all. Remember this is the poll for our favorite animated features movies, not our favorite movies with some animation in it.
And I think most of us will agree that the animated parts of Roger Rabbit and its relationship to the medium are easily significant enough to make it count for our poll.
