Country Poll: Egypt [Deadline: October 1, 2023]

#1

Post by Fergenaprido »

Overview of the Project
Schedule

Google Sheet

September 2023: Egypt

Rules
* You may vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 titles.
* Feature films, documentaries, shorts, made-for-tv movies, direct-to-video movies, TV mini-series, and TV episodes from anthology series are all eligible.
* One country per film - IMDB is used as a guideline, but Fergenaprido will be the final arbiter for uncertain cases.
* All ballots are considered ranked unless otherwise stated.
* You must include a list of bare imdb URLs along with your ballot (preferably within a spoiler tag), otherwise your ballot will be disqualified.

Scoring
For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive the number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each successive title receiving one point less.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means #1 has 20 points, #2 has 19 points, and #20 has 1 point; a list with 5 titles means #1 has 5 points, #2 has 4 points, and #5 has 1 point.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted it the ballot had been ranked.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means each title would receive 10.5 points; a list with 5 titles means each title would receive 3 points.

Resources:
Egyptian films sorted by number of votes*
Egyptian films sorted by your rating on imdb*
Wikipedia article on Cinema of Egypt
*due to imdb allowing films to be attributed to more than one country, many titles in this filter may be ineligible for this poll if Netherlands is not the primary country of production. Decisions about uncertain films will be listed in the second post of this thread.

Many thanks to Rufus-T & gromit82 for the framework from the Year by Year polls, and to maxwelldeux for the Excel template.

Participants:
Fully ranked lists of 20 titles unless otherwise indicated

(unranked)
(2 ineligibles)
(12 titles)

Would The Square (2013) count for the UK and not Egypt?

Here's my list to start things off:

1. Al Hob Fawk Hadabat Al Haram [Love Above the Pyramid Plateau] (1985)
2. Sharia Muhammad Ali [Muhammad Ali Street] (1944)
3. La anam [Sleepless] (1957)
4. El haram [The Sin] (1965)
5. Siraa Fil-Wadi [Struggle in the Valley / The Blazing Sun] (1954)
6. Al-ard [The Land / The Earth] (1970)
7. Iskanderija... lih? [Alexandria, Why?] (1979)
8. Al-asfour [The Sparrow] (1972)
9. 678 [Cairo 678] (2010)
10. Thartharah fawq el-Nil [Adrift on the Nile] (1971)
11. Siraa Fil-Mina [Dark Waters] (1956)
12. Al Mowaten Bors [Citizen Gecko] (2014)
13. Al-boustaguy [The Postman] (1968)
14.

All the Egyptian films I've seen I've rated between 7.2 to 7.8, which might be the narrowest range for any country with more than 2 or 3 films seen. So I've yet to see a bad film from there, but also a great film. I could fill out my ballot with the remaining 6 films at 7.2 (Cairo Station, Curlew's Cry, Kit Kat, The Mummy, Egyptian Story, Life or Death), but I'm leaving them off for now.

I've got a few more lined up this month, The Square and Mercedes in particular. I might also squeeze in another Chahine or two, so should get my ballot to at least 15 films.

This one: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2486682/ ?

I have it lined up to watch this month, so I'll double-check the onscreen credits when I do. The first company listed on imdb is the director's company, but there is no country attribute listed. She's American, though, so it might be an American film in the end. I'll look into it and give a ruling here, and also update the imdb credits to reflect what is shown onscreen.

Yes, that's it. If it is eligible, it will rank third out of six films. If not, I'll just reach the minimum of five films. I still need to explore more in the way of Egyptian films, but it won't be for a while, unfortunately. I'll leave it in for now and edit it out later if need be.

Egypt is the only African country where I have seen more than ten films from, but I barely manage to get to five titles, with obviously a lot of Chahine...

Egypt
01. al-Momia [=The Night of Counting the Years} | Shalam
02. Awdat al-Ibn al-Dal [=The Return of the Prodigal Son] | Chahine
03. Bab el-Hadid [=Cairo Station] | Chahine
04. Siraa Fil-wadi [=The Blazing Sun] | Chahine
05. al-Ard [=The Land] | Chahine

I usually wait until near the end of the month to post my list, but since I already have 20+ Egyptian films that I like and I don't see myself watching any more this month, I'll post my list now and maybe entice someone else into checking out Karnak Cafe or Life or Death, two really great Egyptian classics.

I took only my stronger 3.5 scores, but I admit it is not the strongest list for me. Compared to other common classics of Egyptian cinema that I have also seen, and more recent commercial endeavours, these are all masterpieces though ;)

I was hoping to get a few more Egyptian films in before the deadline but that is looking unlikely now so here is my list as it stands:

1. Cairo Station
2. The Sin
3. The Blazing Sun
4. The Curlew's Cry
5. Cairo 678
6. Clash

I've enjoyed most of what I've seen from Egypt so far but I feel like I've barely scratched the surface and will be looking forward to getting some more recommendations from the poll results.

I can help you with that, filmbantha. I've seen an excellent 21-minute long short called "The Eloquent Peasant" after I noticed the film being insomnius' submission for the 500<400. I immediately put it in the second place and I hope Fergenaprido will see that too and change my ballot.

I second that rec, and it will be on my list unless I end up with over 20 potentially list-worthy choices (I still have a few I want to watch before the deadline). Even then it's a competitor.

Thanks both for the rec, I don't really watch short films though I'm sure others will be interested. I am on a strict self-imposed diet of feature length films only 😄. This 'short-sighted' mindset led to our talking images episode on short film bigotry - viewtopic.php?p=808717#p808717

I just listened to that in the last couple of days actually - maybe I'll post thoughts on it under the topic. Well, your loss :woot: - to be fair, that seems to be the ONLY older Egyptian short that has been even close to "widely" seen - most of the others that come up when you search for Egyptian shorts are pretty new and I haven't delved into any of them. Maybe I will now that I'm thinking about it, though I can't say the ones that I've read descriptions of seem that enticing.

As long as changes are made before I post the "final warning" update, I'll catch them. I always double-check the ballots for any changes between when they're first posted and when I start the final calculations.

I'm having a lot of computer woes, due in part to my increasing dimness. If someone could please add the ..

1. Bab el hadid / Cairo Station (1958)
2. Al midan / The Square (2013)
3. Al-mummia / The Mummy (1969)
4. / Crash (2016)
5. El Naser Salah el Dine (1963)
6. Destiny (1997)
7. Doa al karawan / The curlew’s cry (1959)

Also I've seen an Egyptian version of Gogol's Revizor/ The Inspector-general, but I can't find it.

For #4, do you mean Eshtebak / Clash (2016) ? I couldn't find one called Crash, though maybe I missed it. - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5599692/

I found many versions of Revizor / The Inspector General, but none from Egypt, unfortunately.

Found it -

Al-mufattish al-amm (1956)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1168649/

Did you want to add this in at #8 or elsewhere in your list?
