ICM Forum's Favorite Action Movies
Nominations
Image

It's time to chose our favorite Action movies, again. Keep in mind this is the poll for our favorite Action Movies, not our favorite movies with some action in it.
Action films involve one or more heroes thrust into a series of challenges requiring physical feats, extended fights, extensive stunts and frenetic chases. Story and character development are generally secondary to explosions, fist fights, gunplay and car chases. Both historically and currently, action films have wide commercial appeal and enjoy box office success. The action film revolves around a narrative, to be sure, but more importantly than that, a hero; when a moviegoer thinks of an action picture, more often than not they are thinking of a specific actor (Harrison Ford, Errol Flynn, Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Lee, Steve McQueen, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, or Douglas Fairbanks Sr., to name but a few) and the obstacles their character(s) must overcome. Long the most popular of genres among male moviegoers, the action picture has been the dominant film genre of American and many foreign film markets (notably Hong Kong), since action translates across language barriers. It is impossible to think of the cinema without the action adventure film (Raiders Of The Lost Ark), the cop action film (Bullitt), the confined-space action film (Die Hard), the sci-fi action film (Aliens), the martial arts action film (Enter The Dragon, the action comedy (most Jackie Chan films), and the various other action subgenres too numerous to mention. Hollywood has continued to produce more action films than ever before, especially as advents in CG have made it cheaper and easier to create action sequences and other visual effects that once required professional stunt crews, dangerous staging, integrated use of props, and other complex, expensive elements. However, action audiences' expectations have been raised commiserate with the leveling of the movie-making playing field, and films where computer animation is not believable are often met with criticism. Additionally, a subgenre of action films have emerged wherein the filmmakers' efforts to continually strive for more and more absurdist, over-the-top action elements is an openly understood aspect of the cinematic experience, as with films like Crank. Some help:
Action movies you rated on IMDb
(Like always it's up to yourself to decide the eligibility of all. Remember this is the poll for our favorite action movies, not our favorite movies with some action in it)
  • IMDb- or iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, ask another user to help you out.)
  • Lists can be any length.
  • Shorts, mini-series and TV-episodes from anthology series where the episodes are unrelated, are allowed. Tv-series aren't allowed.*
  • Each nominee can only be named once (of course)
  • Lists can be ranked or unranked or partially-ranked. In a partially-ranked list, the top X films are ranked and everything after that point is unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked.

Unranked though , but still :)

Black Fire is my favorite Romano Kristoff movie (unknown action hero that deserves some celebration!)
It's a vietnam vet/american ninja type movie, very gritty, loved it when I was young and now of course it's got obscurity creds going for it.... haven't seen it in ages though. It's one of the hidden treasures from my 'videotheek' VHS heydays... hope it holds up (for you).

(... feel kinda bad now that I didn't put any Warhawk Tanzania movie in there... love me some VHS action hero's :))

Ranked and such. Could filter out some dubious entries I guess, but probably won't have much of an effect anyway, so the list is good to go!

I just want to confirm that this poll does not include films with the "adventure" tag on IMDB (i.e. "action" only)...?

IMDb tags play no role in the eligibility of a title. It’s up to each voter themselves to decide if a movie is an action movie. That said when a movie doesn’t have the action tag the changes it is an action movie are lower than when a movie does. While on the other hand not every movie with an action tag on IMDb is indeed an action movie.

Ok thanks. It won't make much difference for my list, but I wanted to check.

Interim information: I always have a hard time with the β€œAction” genre. What really is a classic action movie? I have now made a pre-selection of 621 films where IMDB has flagged these films with the word "Action". Now I have to decide for myself which of these films I consider to be primarily action films. As a rule, with these films I always look for a way to assign such a film to a different genre. So it will be a while before I can deliver my nominations.
Born in 1970! Unfortunately, I can't remember the first film I saw. The following three films that I saw when I was young left strong memories: Krakatit (1948, Vavra), Dance of the Vampires (1967, Polanski), Paper Moon (1973, Bogdanovich).

That's the same reason I haven't been rushing to make a list. Whenever I do get around to it, I definitely won't be relying on IMDb tags, which are scattershot.

Just a starting point, but here goes. Let's say... 1 - 12 ranked, for now.

Here's my list, ranked: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls525071326/

I had a tough time with this one, trying to stay true to the directive of action films and not films with action, but I found it hard to distinguish them sometimes, or remember them at others. In the end, I removed all films I had tagged as action in my database that didn't also have the action genre tag on imdb except for The Great Escape - the action sequences of that film are part of what makes it so great. I also added 10 films to the end of my list that wouldn't normally make my ballots, but which are fun action films that I like for their action but aren't necessarily great overall.

So there may be some marginal cases, but I think I'm content with this list. I don't know why I didn't submit a list last time.
