Year-by-Year Polls: Looking back at 2022 (Closed)

#1

Post by Rufus-T »

Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll looking back at 2022. It is time again to celebrate the movies from the previous year.

The Rules

The rule is slightly different from our usual poll. In addition to poll the films, we will include polls for the 4 acting categories (leading actor, leading actress, supporting actor, and supporting actress).

The eligible films are the following:

1) Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

2) Listed as 2022 according to IMDb

3) Listed according to IMDb prior to 2021 if the film released in 2022 in your country. These usually are 2021 films and sometimes 2020 films. If earlier than 2020 and I do not notice any 2022 release at any country, I may disqualify it unless you can justify the inclusion in your ballot. Some prefer to list only films that listed as 2022 on IMDb. That is fine too. Great thing about these polls are that they are accumulation of different opinion and taste within the rules.

4) To avoid duplicate entries in the higher ranking, any films that you listed in last year's poll would not be allowed to be listed again.

You may list up to 20 films for the film poll, no minimum number.

You may list up to 10 performances for each of the 4 acting categories. If you are not sure whether a performance is a leading or a supporting role, put it in the category you deem most fit. The split will consolidated later to the category with the most points follow by number of mentions and by higher ranked.

If you have an actor or actress in multiple films in your list, please list their performances for the different films at different slots since they are different performances.

Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but I will assume it's ranked unless otherwise stated. For ranked ballots it makes it easier if you use a numbered list.

Regarding IMDb links, since there may be many revision for some and that the poll includes the performance categories, I relax on this rule so you do not need to include the IMDb links as usual. You may if you want to, and does help me if you do. However, if the film you listed without link and has another film with the same name, please distinguish it by including the director or a link or some other way. Otherwise, I will choose the one with the most IMDb votes.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, well you get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

The scoring for the performances is the same as films except that the scoring is for lists up to 10 slots.

You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes.

Don't worry too much if you have not seen enough films. You are still welcome to participate. The result turned out to be quite decent every year with enough participation. The poll may help you keep up to date the recent films. It helped me every year.

After this poll, we will return to our regular Year-by-Year poll with 1954, followed by 1988.

Thank you and happy listing, and let's generate another awesome year-end list!

General feelings on the year for me are extremely positive. The first "normal" feeling year we've had since 2019, and even though 2021 had a large amount of releases and some new favorites, most of the widely discussed films were just holdovers that got postponed from 2020, and I wasn't able to see as much as I would've liked in the cinema. This year I was able to see all of my top twenty picks on the big screen, and most of my honorable mentions as well, with only one film from my lineup having been previously dated for 2020 but delayed until a later year.

Will add links soon.

Damn, I was hoping Gunnar would once again come to my rescue with some SHORTS recommendations.

I've only seen 3 movies from 2022, and only two of those are at my cutoff for list-making. I want to have at least five though, so any and all shorts recs will likely score high on my list if anyone has any - as I'd like to submit a list, but I don't have that much spare / free time available.

please & thanks!

For Minkin:

I haven't really explored beyond the Oscar nominated shorts, but here are some worth taking a look at:

The Red Suitcase
The Elephant Whisperers (around 40 minutes so not exactly short)
An Irish Goodbye
Stranger at the Gate
The Martha Mitchell Effect (also around 40 minutes so not exactly short)
Le Pupille
An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse
Ice Merchants

Loving our overlaps in the last couple of polls, Viktor!

Aiming to see De Humani Corporis Fabrica and Showing Up this week.

Afterwater was pretty far down my watchlist, but will try to seek it out before the deadline now.

Love your top 2

Sadly, I wasn't a fan of À vendredi, Robinson. It didn't strike me in any way, even though I had looked forward to it.
I've grown tired of Seidl, so I will probably not see Rimini. Though I did meet the lead actor at a film festival in Serbia last year. He had to pints of beer for breakfast.
Triangle of Sadness is one of my least favorite films from last year.

Looking forward to the Diop and Gomes films!

Hope you get to see Humani and Reichardt - though they are probably the polar opposites, haha.

It was my first Seidl so I was luckily not hampered by that. Perhaps it will go down in my esteem when I have time to seek out his previous work. Would others reading this say it is overly similar to what he has done before?

I caught De Humani Corporis Fabrica yesterday btw, it will make my list. I was wondering if it would make my top 5 for a while. It got a little repetitive, plus the amount of "gore", made me disengage a couple of times. Might have loved it even more at the cinema. Very unsettling, great tension and really beautiful, using the insides of human bodies as landscapes to travel through, while also giving more creepy Dying at Grace vibes by showing people near their deaths, already dead or people with severely degenerated capabilities. Fantastic choice of blocking, it makes it feel like you are an ethereal being looking on. The opening and ending felt slightly off though. In not sure we focused on a dog for the first 2-3 minutes given the content/theme, and the final sequence, which is very impressively done, felt more darkly comedic than the rest of the film.

L'Envol is supposed to come out on dvd/bd on August 8th with English subtitles so it wont be too long before it is available. It will be under the English title - Scarlet.

Seen exactly 20 movies from 2022. Only 3 were good enough to me to vote for. I'll skip this poll.
