iCM Forum World Cup - Season 5 - Round 2 schedule

#1

Post by joachimt »

Welcome to the schedule of iCM Forum World Cup - Season 5 - Round 2.
If you don't know what this is, you can find everything about the World Cup here.

Rules in this round:
- You must watch both films of a match before you vote.
- To vote, rank the films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)
- The winner of each match will proceed to the next round.
- The winners of the match is the movie with the most #1-votes.
- If there's a tie the match will have a 3 day extension. If there's still a tie then, the next voter decides by sudden death.
- Don't vote in this thread. Each match will have its own thread according to the schedule.

Questions:

How shall I do the draw? I would propose this.
- One bowl for all #1 in round 1. One bowl for all #2.
- Managers shouldn't compete with themselves.

Did we decide on lowering the checkcount on each round? I can't find this.

- Countries with same managers cannot be drawn in the same group.
- Countries which already met in Round 1 cannot meet again until Round 3.

Which means Japan and France, Russia and Spain, Singapore and Brazil, Egypt and Canada cannot be drawn now.

As far as I know these will be straight 1v1 matches not groups, therefore I think Joachimt's idea is fine except with the added part that they can't go up against the country they competed against in their round 1 match

Then the group winners should be in one bowl, and the runners-up in the other, with same clauses I noted above.

I thought this was going to be 4x4 format.

This was indeed the winning format from the poll: 32 countries (later increased to 40 and 8x5), 8 groups of four (2 advance), then 4 groups of 4 (2 advance), quarterfinals, semifinals and final. - 62 movies in total

There was non consensus on that and no ruling.

Can we progress the rounds faster ? WIth most of voters on first or last week in the first round, it felt a bit of a dead game in between. Are people voting last really in need of 1 week/film or are they just procrastinating ?

I can't find the poll, but if you guys say so, I guess we will do groups of 4 then. In both cases half the movies proceed, but with groups of four better movies have a better chance of proceeding.
So:
- managers not competing themselves
- countries not competing same countries as round 1
- one bowl #1's, one bowl #2's
- checkcount<1000
- no directors that have appeared before in this season
- no movies from previous seasons
- runtime<180min

I also misremembered that it was 1on1s from here on in, but no complaints from me about groups of 4 for the second round.

June 20th deadline for submissions? Okeedokee. Expect mine on the 20th. :run:
I've got tentative picks for both countries, but I still want to explore more to see if something else comes along that I think will do better.

Works for me. If you're separating out #1s and #2s, does that mean each Round 2 Match will have two #1s and two #2s from the previous round?

And Canada & Egypt cannot be drawn together ;)

4 managers with 2 countries making it out of the first round... is that the most ever? (And maybe more depending on the final match)

If we were only watching WC films, faster would be fine with me, but with participating in other forum polls and challenges, and trying to watch non-forum-related films, I personally do find it tough to squeeze them all in a shorter timeline. I don't procrastinate, but it can take me 2-3 weeks to watch all the films for a match, especially this first round if I haven't seen all 5 films already. Just because I post at the end doesn't mean I waited until them to watch them all. :) I suppose others might be in similar situations.

That's the idea indeed. I don't think I'll bother doing four bowls based on ratings or something like that. It's hard enough as it is to group the countries without grouping countries again together or having managers compete themselves. I wonder how often I have to randomize it to have a grouping that fits all rules.

Yes, I will, using the rand() function in Excel until groups appear that fit all rules. Or do you suggest something easier?

We did four weeks per match in round 1 with one week overlap. That was five movies a match. With four movies a match in round 2, we could do:
- three weeks per match with one week overlap (6/22 till 8/24)
- three weeks per match with half a week overlap (6/22 till 9/3)
- four weeks per match with one and a half week overlap (6/22 till 9/10)
Or something like that. Any thought?

Let me check my inbox first.

About the pace:
Only responses say to go with three weeks per match with one week overlap, so let's go with that. In that case, I'll start each match on a Sunday, so we'll start the 25th.

Got 13/16 now. Only waiting for Ritesh and Fergenaprido.

I sent reminders. Fergy replied. I don't my message to Ritesh anymore, not in my outbox and not in sent items. Still here, Ritesh?

Last time a manager went AWOL, someone else stepped in to manage the country instead of replacing it with another country.

Perhaps tommy could step in:

I think UK is as good as those 3, if not better. And I personally like UK and Czech more than USA and France, but mostly due to the the huge number of duds I have seen from the latter.

Anyway, my original comment was just a joke. If they are interesting and intriguing enough , people wouldn't have forgot/ignored them in the first place.
Maybe you should contact Ritesh; he took over India just because some 1 post member took it first, never to appear again. So Ritesh didn't show any intentions at first.

If he's willing to give over India, that would include yourself in the game. But you have to ask him first.
Ah, That's fine. I've missed the train and let it be ;) Ritesh has done quite well with India before. So I would like him to continue.

That's Iceland and it was managed by 72aicm. So we could ask him to take over USA if Ritesh doesn't show up, right?

I agree. It would be unfair to USA otherwise. Also if Ritesh shows up after USA win 2nd round, he could re-take it.

If he's willing to give over India, that would include yourself in the game. But you have to ask him first.
Ah, That's fine. I've missed the train and let it be ;) Ritesh has done quite well with India before. So I would like him to continue.
I'm already a step-in for India, as after that quoted conversation Ritesh had given India up to me. So, I'm not really keen to take another and USA is not my strong suit anyway. I'm sure there are other interested persons here for USA.

Ah, my bad. Thanks for clarifying tommy. I had only remembered you offering to step in.

Mario's suggestion of 72aicm works for me too.

FYI I'm finalizing my Egypt pick tonight and my Canada pick tomorrow, so I'll meet the deadline of the 20th.

Just stumbled upon this thread by accident. I don’t mind «killing» a third country. Just quote me if that’s what’s up. Deadline is today?

As you can read from the post above, tommy wants to manage USA as he claimed he was the Ritesh's substitute.

I don't read his post like that. I think 72aicm can take over.

I'd bet I read he WAS keen to take it over, but maybe it was just me mixing up things, or he edited the post. Dunno.
