Year by Year Polls: 2015 (CLOSED)

#1

Post by gromit82 »

Welcome to the Year by Year Poll!

This poll is for the year 2015.

These polls are fairly simple. We work our way through film history selecting a different year each time, and you list your top films from the given year. Depending on the number of voters, the poll usually produces a list of around 50-90 films and is a great way of finding recommendations. You can also list other films outside your top 20 as honorable mentions or runners-up.

The Rules

- You can vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 films.

- Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies, and TV mini-series are all eligible, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

- We use IMDb dates for consistency, so a title should be listed on IMDb as 2015 (unless a specific film has been otherwise declared eligible). Note: I usually don't validate titles for eligibility until after the poll closes, unless a question has been raised about a specific title. So please make sure that the films on your list are eligible, or specifically ask on this thread about titles whose eligibility is in doubt. If you happen to see that someone else has an ineligible film on their ballot, please let them know.

- Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but for ranked ballots, your list must be numbered. Partially ranked lists (where a certain number at the top are ranked, and the rest are unranked) are allowed. Please make sure that what you mean to do with your list is clear.

- IMPORTANT: Along with a list of the titles from 2015, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films. Your ballot cannot be counted if the IMDb urls are not included. (And if you list only the URLs but not the films' titles, you'll significantly reduce your fellow voters' enjoyment of this poll, so please make sure to include both titles and URLs.)

- Please note, you must post your list of URLs yourself rather than having someone else do that for you.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points, and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, etc. You get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

The Deadline

This poll is currently scheduled to close on Sunday, May 28, at 11 AM US Pacific time. You may revise or add a ballot anytime until the poll is indicated closed in the subject header.

The next poll will be in June for the year in review for 2022, followed in either July or August by 1954. Our schedule is subject to change depending on whether Rufus-T and I have a third person available to conduct the polls. If we don't, I expect that we will be taking every third month off from the Year by Year polls so that neither of us has to run the poll more than once every three months.

Weird year for me. Was not in a great place mentally or career-wise throughout most of this year, and it for sure had an impact on my viewing habits. Oh, I still went and saw the same amount of films I normally would have, but I truly think my enjoyment and experience watching a decent chunk of them was greatly impacted by the not-so-great headspace I was in for most of the year. Therefore, in the past couple years, there's been plenty of films from this year that I've re-watched and gotten more out of with some time.

1. Spotlight
2. The VVitch: A New England Folk Tale
3. Carol
4. Taxi
5. Sunset Song
6. Songs My Brothers Taught Me
7. Inside Out
8. Cike Nie Yin Niang / The Assassin
9. Umimachi Diary / Our Little Sister
10. Mistress America

11. Steve Jobs
12. The Visit
13. Crimson Peak
14. Creed
15. Beasts of No Nation
16. Bridge of Spies
17. The End of the Tour
18, Saul fia / Son of Saul
19. Mad Max: Fury Road
20. World of Tomorrow

Will probably be tinkering with my list right up until the deadline, so I'll add links when I know for sure my list is where I want it to be.

Thanks to the batch of western shorts I just saw, 2015 is the year I've seen the most films from, surpassing 1937. There's an on-going battle between those two years. The only modern year I've done a deep dive. I had reached the 1940s and was getting a little bored with the classics project that year and decided to watch the modern year alongside the classic one.

That year I watched a ton of indie films, Bollywood, all the blockbusters, big international selection, lots of camp B-movies and mockbusters. That's when I really understood I'm mainly into mainstream movies, which is heavily reflected by my Top-20. Smaller movies felt like that. Smaller experiences. And I discovered a lot of pet peeves regarding modern movie making, especially on the indie scene, and my hate for vagueness in storytelling, empty sound ambiance, slow movies imagery, mumbling and all that grew. Felt like all the new film makers came from the same school. So since then I've mainly just kept up with the big movies and stayed away from the smaller films.

As someone who lives and loves in the past, my post-1990s film knowledge is severely lacking - having only seen 17 films from 2015, and only 11 of those are of "passing" grade (aka above a 5/10). I don't have that much time for features - as I'm focusing on the DtC challenge mostly this month, but the good thing is - that I can sneak in plenty of shorts in the meantime!

So if anyone reading this could recommend me some 2015 shorts (<40mins), that would be supremely helpful for helping me have a more gainful list.

And of course a big thanks to gunnar for knowing me all to well (and answering to the call!)

Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah (40 minutes)

I've actually seen quite a few good (and mostly pretty obscure) shorts from this year. Most probably won't make my own list, but these are all at least worthy also-rans:

Les 3 boutons - Agnès Varda's last released short
American Reflexxx
Another Kind of Girl (listed as 2016 on icm, 2015 on IMDb. Whatever)
Bring Me the Head of Tim Horton - I mean, just the title alone makes it worthwhile - but it's Guy Maddin, so it's doubly awesome
Elgin Park (this one's 2014 icm, 2015 IMDb) - mid-20th-century Americana, in the form of a diorama made by a reclusive man
The Exquisiste Corpus
I, Dalio - should be right up the alley of someone interested mostly in older film, dealing with classic-era French character actor Marcel Dalio
I Thought I Told You to Shut Up!! - will have more relevance if you are familiar with David Boswell and his comic Red Fleming, World's Toughest Milkman
Life Smartphone
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion..

Seems so, at least here. Rather odd. It's the 135th most acclaimed film of the 21st century according to TSPDT and almost made the all-time top 1,000 (24th on the 1001-2000 list).

8 years after release, this super-acclaimed film stands on 4 ICM lists, of which 3 are the botched S&S list + both TSPDT, so all a very similar circle jerk; plus the mention by Rosenbaum, who's, well, Rosenbaum.
Not even 1000 IMDb ratings. 6 favs, 7 dislikes on ICM, no mention in <400 although it's eligible all the time. Even Letterboxd (who gladly hypes Akerman) has that film at only 3.7.

The "rather odd" thing is the #135 in TSP21, not that we haven't nominated it so far out of a dozen voters or so, if you ask me.
Of course I don't know the film or much about it, I just want to put the obscurity into perspective here. But the insomnii & co of the Forum are yet to vote, so a place in the Top 100 should be still possible. ;)

Please don't hate me... but I have it at #624 place on my list of favorite films of 2015. I liked Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 more... okay now I'm probable fishing for hate :P

This is what I had to say about it:

You get that Chantal Akerman loved her mother a lot. You feel for her, especially when you know she killed herself shortly after her mother passed away. But as a simple visitor into their home, No Home Movie (2015) was like visiting a distant aunt interacting in awkward polite conversation, where you keep looking at your watch and looking for excuses to leave.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Born in 1970! Unfortunately, I can't remember the first film I saw. The following three films that I saw when I was young left strong memories: Krakatit (1948, Vavra), Dance of the Vampires (1967, Polanski), Paper Moon (1973, Bogdanovich).

I'll try to watch it before the end of the poll gloede! Been meaning to for awhile, this is a good extra incentive.

I'm something of a fan of Akerman, but haven't gotten to it. Given my mental energy right now I'm not sure it's a good time for me to tackle it, but if I manage to feel better (highly unlikely before the poll closes, alas), it will probably be the top priority; the other two things I really would have liked to watch are both really long so they're out of contention right now.
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion..

2014 according to IMDb, how did we treat it in that poll?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0470752/

The Year by Year retrospective polls haven't covered 2014 yet, neither here nor in the predecessor polls on the IMDb Classic Film Board. The Classic Film Board did have year-in-review polls which were associated with the Year by Year polls, and Ex Machina did place in the poll for 2015 (and not 2014). But the rules were different for those polls, as people could vote for films in the year the film premiered in their own country. (A few films placed in the year-in-review poll in two consecutive years.)

So for purposes of this poll, Ex Machina is a 2014 film as it is listed by IMDb -- it's not eligible this time around.

If you are something of an Akerman fan you should love this one as it is a culmination of some many of the stylistic, emotional and narrative threads in her career, and a very powerful goodbye (even more so once we know what happened shortly after its completion).

Hope you are feeling better and that you'll find the time and energy to watch more films soon.
