Doubling the Canon 2023 Update - Results!

#1

Post by Angel Glez »

Welcome to our annual update.

What is this?
Begun in 2007, Doubling the Canon is a yearly project which aims to expand the Film Canon as crafted by the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? website.

Who can participate?
Anyone can join. Filmmakers, FIPRESCI members or Sight & Sound voters were among our jurors in the past, they are welcome as well. ;)
Requirement for newbies: Please note that you will be requested to identify yourself, just to make sure that the poll is answered (only once) by cinephiles of good will.

Where?
In this thread.
In the scfzforum: https://scfzforum.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=937
Via e-mail: doublingthecanon@hotmail.com

What is new in this update?
Any film that is newly admitted to the Doubled Canon must be subjected to a revote after 5 years so we're going to revote the 2018 entries.

2022 update:
viewtopic.php?t=5829

Phase I: Nominations for titles not on either TSPDT lists (2000 Greatest Films + 21st Century top 1000) or the Doubling list.
Deadline: May 6.
Each participant can nominate a maximum of 12 films. Shorts, TV-movies, and TV mini-series are eligible. Every nominated movie goes onto the roster as a nominee. Films released in 2022-23 aren't allowed this year for our exercise.
sol, lineuphere and flavo5000 get respectively 3, 2 and 1 extra nominations.
Along with a list of the titles, please include the corresponding list of bare IMDb urls for the same films.
Please, don't edit your post! To change your ballot or add new titles you have to write a new reply.

Ongoing list of nominated films: See the post below.

Phase II: Ratings.
You're invited to rate the films you have seen (whether you have participated in the phase I or not). The nominees with the highest ratings make it into our list.
You can cast your votes anytime between now and Wednesday, May 31. Only 'write-in' updates will be accepted after the deadline.
Please, sign your ballot. Example: This is Angel Glez.

Rating system: 0-6 (3.75 was the cutoff last year)

Procedure 1: Just download the ballot (if you prefer I can send you the file) and email it back to doublingthecanon@hotmail.com
DDL (Excel file): https://we.tl/t-OCFcZkDvP5
Procedure 2: Online (PM me for details)

:imdb: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls568388251/
:ICM: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/doub ... /labraxas/
:letbxd: https://letterboxd.com/zzzorf/list/doub ... minations/

Don't remove anything, don't reorder. Untouched ballot with ratings, please.

After submitting your ballot, post a reply here to make sure I received the file. You can also add comments or statistics if you wish.

Early ballots would be appreciated. Then, if you watch new films or forgot to rate some, send me a 'write-in' ballot.

Thank you in advance for joining us in this game.

P.S.: If you know anyone adventurous enough (on or off the forum) that you think would also enjoy participating, feel free to invite them as well.

When I saw your name and quickfire response I was worried I had missed the boat on getting Malmkrog in!!!! For better or worse, I have nommed it now.

A good choice! I think I could make a thousand nominations :) So I chose some more obscure ones that still have gotten some recognition on this forum (I think) and might have a chance of getting in... regarding Malmkrog I'm not sure enough of us are on board (yet)...

First thanks for doing this every year... and like every year: this 610 are the revote-titles from 2018 + drop offs from the three lists + runners up from 2022?

I've put the nominations list in an iCM list. I'd be happy to keep this updated as nominations roll in?

was this in TSPDT or DtC previously? I'm struggling to believe I've missed the chance to nominate this 7 years running.

Related question, has anyone done an ex-DtC list, i.e. films that used to be in DtC but dropped out (and not in TSPDT 1-2,000 etc)

It was on 500<400 until last edition I think.
And it was nominated for DtC in 2018 but to no avail

L'ange was in the DtC list for years.

There is no such ex-DtC list, but I guess it is doable.

There are films included like Oslo 31. August, Palm Springs or Possessor... all three on the actual TSPDT 21st century list. It's an error, right?

Shockingly, no. The IcM list hasn't been updated, but they've all dropped off the list in the last update! It's a huge shakeup, and I would be shocked if a couple of these films didn't reappear in future years. Oslo in particular makes me quite sad to see gone.

Came here to give the information Panunzio just gave.

Although it does feel like an error that Oslo, Palm Springs and Possessor all aren't part of TSP21 anymore :teehee:

I watched it tonight, really neat movie. The cast is incredibly strong, if I had to call one out it would be Faye Dunaway. A real actors' film. There's just lots of really powerful moments that just come from hand gestures. Gray also seems good at bringing the sex appeal out of actresses, Theron here, Mendes in We Own The Night, a very similar film. The scene where Theron's character Erica apologizes to her stepfather for always rejecting his help and advice is electric.

You know it's weird when even Wahlberg does an amazing job lol. Amazing use of shadows too. Something about the darkness of Joaquin Pheonix's eyes in those scenes with dark lighting really stood to me.

I've got a preliminary 12 nominations sorted but I think I might wait to see if any of mine are nominated by someone else first (flavo already took one I had originally put in my list) as I struggled with some of my last choices so maybe I can sneak another one in. I'm just in two minds at the moment with what I should do. All the same I will have them up before the challenge starts to give them the best possible chance.

Thanks!
Ah okay thanks. And yes i'm with you and Torgo it really makes me questioning the lists quality, if these films (and especially Oslo) are not even Top1000 of these young century anymore :folded:

PS: And the Phoenix Suns win... what a fucking start in the day (in europe)

Sweet, there is another of my nominations taken by cinephage which makes room for another to take its place. It is paying to wait a little.
