Voting Rules:
- You must watch all 5 films before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 5 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)

Voting deadline = Feb 26th
Countdown till deadline

The countries that end at 1st and 2nd place proceed to the next round. The ranking of the match will be decided using these rules:
- Ranked by highest average ranking (= lowest number).
- In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
- In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between more than two movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? Fewest #5-votes determines the winner.
- Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension (except when the tie is below #2).
Here's a quick summary of how the tournament works
We start with 40 films from 40 countries. Each country has a manager who determines which movie will be watched. In the first round the countries are divided into 8 groups of 5. From each group the countries that end up at #1 and #2 proceed to the next round. In the 2nd round the 16 remaining countries will be divided into 8 matches of 2. The managers pick a new movie. The winner of each match proceeds to the next round. This continues till the final.

This was the most consistent and impressive round yet so thanks to all of the managers for their picks which range from good to very good. The top two films will easily make my 500<400 list and the other three would have likely placed higher in either of the previous groups.

1. The Sin - 7/10

I'm surprised that The Curlew's Cry appears to be the most renowned Barakat film on the forum as this was a much stronger outing. I'm a sucker for a bleak/depressing storyline and this film hit all the right notes, as well as being bolstered by some strong camerawork.

2. What A Wonderful World 7/10

Sol knows more than anyone that I love stressful cinema so this was a surefire way to appeal to my sensibilities. I had no idea what direction the film would go in and soon found myself on the edge of my seat, where I stayed for the remainder of the film.

3. Ilo Ilo - 6/10

This was an engaging slice of life drama with two strong female leads. I especially enjoyed the parallels between the relationship of the parents compared to the maid with their son, it was amusing to see the male characters resorting to poor behaviour in the face of various obstacles whereas the women took a more constructive approach to overcoming their challenges.

4. Escape To Berlin - 6/10

The opening segment of the film was the highlight for me and I would have loved to have watched how events unfolded within the village. Once the escape began, the split narrative took away from the build up of suspense though it was still an enjoyable ride.

5. 339 Amin Abel Hasbun - 6/10

This was an eye-opening account of an important event that was sadly hampered at times by its direction and editing. The performances are fine but the interrogation sequences were shot in an unimaginative fashion and I found myself losing interest during these parts. The final moments were great though and overall it was an enlightening viewing experience from a country I know little about.

There seems to be a diverse range of voting patterns on the films in this group so I'm certainly intrigued to see how the results pan out here.

So far only Dominican Republic is staying behind. For the rest it's very hard to predict how this will end.

I absolutely love El haram, it's my favorite film from this first round out of what I've seen so far and it made me so happy to see it on the list! That's the only one that I had seen before the World Cup, the rest were all first-time viewings:

1. El haram
2. 339 Amin Abel Hasbun. Memoria de un crimen.
3. Flucht nach Berlin
4. Ilo Ilo
5. Ce lume minunata

2. El haram - 7.5
3. 339 Amin Abel Hasbun. Memoria de un crimen - 7
4. Ce lume minunata - 6.5
5. Ilo Ilo - 5

Not my kind of movies this round... took me a while to finish ;)
the bottom spot is more clear than the top one, but I chose the one with most action and forward momentum in the end, 'cause that's the most enjoyable, I guess...

Image El haram: 2.643 (33-23)
Image Flucht nach Berlin: 3 (28-28)

Head to head:
Image Moldova - Image Singapore: 8 - 6
Image Moldova - Image Egypt: 6 - 8
Image Singapore - Image Egypt: 8 - 6

So still a tie there. Then.....

Number of #1-votes:
Image Moldova: 4
Image Singapore: 4
Image Egypt: 4

Can you believe this?! Then the next...

Number of #5-votes:
Image Moldova: 2
Image Singapore: 1
Image Egypt: 2

So at the moment Singapore is on top with #2 and #3 exactly tied.

It says '26th' in the name of the topic but it's actually 27th around 11am. I see no problem if those hours are set a little later, if you can't make it on time.

There's a countdown timer in the OP. The match ends then. No extensions. This match is very close. Wouldn't be fair to count a goal that was made after the final signal from the referee.

Deadline is the end of the 26th on Hawaii.

Can't say I'm not disappointed with how poorly my pick has gone over in this round I was at least hoping for it to do a bit better then it has, I knew I should have gone with Phillipines as my second country but I wanted to give the lesser country a chance.

I will say though it was up against a strong pool here with great selections from every manager with no movie I disliked, even to the point where I had to vote the Egyptian movie over mine.

We had 25 votes in 1A and 24 votes in 1B. So far in 1C 17 votes, so I expect a few more. Anything can happen. Looks like El Haram will make it to first place. Second place is impossible to predict at this moment. Only one vote can shake it upside down.
