ICM Forum's Favorite Chinese Movies
2nd Edition

Nominations
Image

It's time to chose our favorite Chinese movies again.

Eligible countries/territories are
- China
- Hong Kong
- Taiwan
- Macao

DEADLINE = 7 February 2023
  • IMDb- or iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, ask another user to help you out.)
  • Lists can be any length.
  • Shorts, mini-series and TV-episodes from anthology series where the episodes are unrelated, are allowed. Tv-series aren't allowed.*
*A mini-series is 16 episodes or less, not multiple seasons, and not planned to be longer but canceled, and is intended as a single unified work and not episodic.
  • Each nominee can only be named once (of course)
  • Lists can be ranked or unranked or partially-ranked. In a partially-ranked list, the top X films are ranked and everything after that point is unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked.
Some help:
Movies you rated on IMDb from China, sorted by your rating
Movies you rated on IMDb from Hong Kong, sorted by your rating
Movies you rated on IMDb from Taiwan, sorted by your rating
Movies you rated on IMDb from Macao, sorted by your rating
Like always, use this at your own discretion; not all movies mentioned you might consider Chinese and some you would could be missing. (And I'm not Ferge, I'm not going to do background research on the production history of questionable movies ;), instead I will let the public decide if a movie is Chinese.)

Only 4 films, but i really love them, so it's more of additional moral support. Definitely an area that i want to watch more from, so i'll use the end results to guide me in that a bit.

Here ya go, a ranked list.

I've excluded movies that I consider to be Singaporean even though they came up in the search results as Chinese since you haven't mentioned Singapore in your eligible countries/territories

Not a region I've seen a lot of movies from. I was still able to put together a top 20 though.

Is there a participant who has selected a Macanese* movie yet? Some of Johnnie To's movies are situated in Macau and Joao Pedro Rodrigues "A Última Vez Que Vi Macau", but none of these are not Macanese movies by first production country I guess.

Thanks for lists so far, I picked some martial arts/Shaw fantasy titles and added them to my wish/watch-list. Though I have few on my own list, but never the less I like them a lot. The ones I liked most are rated 7.6 / ★★★½ in my database and that's just below the boundary to select them for these country-toplists...

*Macanese, I had to look it up, don't know the right adjective in Dutch either btw. I think 'Macaus'

Here's my list from the previous poll: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls070219933/

I haven't watched many Chinese films since then, so I can't think of anything to add.

I just put up my list and it has one movie from Macau in it, Roulette City (2012).

Er.... what's the deadline then? Assuming Feb 4th, not Jan 4th. Also, the Date in the header at the top of the site says Feb 2nd.

Singapore was included in our Southeast Asia poll a few years ago. :)

Roulette City's the one I was thinking of too.

There are also these films:
A Trança Feiticeira [Bewitching Braid] (1996) by Cai Yuanyuan
Sea of Mirrors (2019) by Thomas Lim
Tricycle Thief (2014 short) by Maxim Bessmertny
Dirty Laundry (2020 short) by Maxim Bessmertny - I saw this one on YT the other year when they had that COVID online festival. It won't make my list, though.

Here's a Macau film I am morbidly interested in: The Audition (2015).

Directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Robert de Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brad Pitt. Runtime - 16 minutes. Budget - $70 MILLION.

Description: Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio must compete for the lead role in Martin Scorsese's next film. According to Wikipedia, The Audition was financed by the Melco Crown Entertainment Limited to commission the opening of its Studio City Macau Resort and Casino. As advertisements for casinos are banned in mainland China, speculation arose that Melco used the short to exploit a loophole to promote the casino. With the short film's budget around $70 million, each actor was reportedly paid $13 million for less than two days' work.

Macau isn't listed as a production country, but the film is set there for the most part. It's a gem too.

Definitely January 4th. This poll is only for those smart enough to invent a way to time travel  :D

Seriously, deadline is 7th of February 2023 AD. I forgot I’m on holiday the first weekend of February

I don’t know who updates and makes the mistakes in the header.

His Father Knows Best trilogy? I think they're all Taiwanese-first productions, and 2 of the 3 made the Top 150 last time, so I think they are still eligible.

All Ang Lee films you feel are Chinese productions eligible. If you want to make it simple; the ones with originally Chinese titles are, the ones with originally American titles aren't from his filmography.
