It's the subject of Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique (2009), #47 on our list, as well as Beyond December 6 (1991), which can be found on the NFB's website (in French with English subtitles).

The Host's Hot Take
More or less these are the results I expected, with a few films I like doing better than I thought and the surprising omission of a few experimental staples. Léolo and La région centrale are probably the two misses that surprised me the most. The Grey Fox beats out Exotica for that final Top 20 spot in the master list, and there are an unsurprisingly large number of documentaries and short films in the final list; Canada might end up taking the crown in both categories by the end of it: 13 docs (14%) and 13 shorts (14%) (and 3 documentary shorts, two of which are animated). Compared to critics and award-givers, we've got a soft spot for Canuxploitation films not often seen elsewhere. Overall, we enjoy a wide-range of Canadian films, as shown by the fact that we have a top list of 94 films from 42 participants, which is almost many films as the big 5 so far (USA, UK, France, Germany, Japan) despite having fewer voters, and more than the comparable Australia (74 films from 46 participants). And with a number of unofficial films making the list, and already 5 entries from the 2020s, there's still plenty of Canuck cinema to explore. We've got something for everyone!

Can't complain about Cronenberg getting 10 hits either consider that The Fly and AHOV were ineligible -- that's very impressive.

I've never heard that before. I think more controversial films get made in the US than here, personally. But who knows.

I think it's pretty obvious why horror has such a big part in Canada's film history - it's generally a cheap genre, predicated on films being made more quickly and more cheaply than other popular genres because the films traditionally have a very large audience as a whole, but aren't necessarily individually enormous box office hits, and so Canada became an easy place for American directors/companies to film (alongside it's own homegrown product of course). And given that English is the dominant language, and that it borders the USA, it's all the more attractive. Lots of multinational low-budget productions were also made in Mexico, South Africa, the Philippines and elsewhere, particularly from the 60s-80s, but Canada was the easiest choice for many obvious reasons.

I've never heard the "controversial" thing either, probably something Laki's just getting out of a Facebook post or two or his own not terribly educated guesses.

Haven't seen it yet - it's been on the list since it came out but, mini-series and all, just haven't gotten to it. He's also in Last Night, which did get some votes; I don't remember how big his role is in that though, if I'm remembering right it's a big ensemble with only Don McKellar and Sandra Oh having roles that are at all large.

Polytechnique as with Elephant I found pretty wanting and objectionable. "We don't understand the subject so we will film a recreation".

Feels weird to have Videodrome sat next to the national day of remembrance message. The film contains a lot of sexual violence to women, although when I've looked it up some have decided that the movie is "feminist".

The main thing that shocked me with the results is just how under-seen Guy Maddin's Careful is.

Forgot to mention earlier, I'm at 76/94 (81%), so ahead of sol but just one behind OldAle . Guess I need to watch a couple more to get ahead! I only have Scanners on hand, though, so I'll have to check out which of the other 17 are available on streaming. My biggest gap are the 5 2020s films, all of which could be considered horror or horror-adjacent . Splice and Cave of Forgotten Dreams are probably the two remaining that interest me the most, though Beyond the Black Rainbow intrigues me (mainly because it's on both the Total Film Amazing Never Seen and 366 Weird lists), but I'm a tad hesitant to watch it (it scary? or just thrillery?).

I sent Sol the full list privately, and he's at 162/322, so just over 50%. I'm at 168. So of course I had to download Ale's checks to compare . He's at 152. If no one else beats this, it may be the first and last time I'll have seen the most (though I think I came close with Senegal). I'll take it.
