ICM Forum's Favorite Directors 2022 Edition: Due Sun January 8 (CLOSED)

ICM Forum's Favorite Directors, 2022 edition

Image

It's time to make out favorite directors list again. Submit an imdb list with as many directors as you like. You have until end of day Sunday Jan 8 to submit your lists.

If you do not have an IMDb account, PM me a bare bone IMDb links of your final list and I will create an IMDb list for you to post.

Half life will be 29, like last year.

I will assume your list is ranked unless you specify otherwise.
Other than a ranked list you can submit your list in one of the following ways:
- Unranked: All directors get the same number of points.
- Partially ranked: Top X is ranked, rest is unranked
- Group ranked: You have to specify the groups that go together, all films in the group get the same number of points. (eg: 11-20, 21-30, 31-50, 51-100)

Spoiler
I want to try to be consistent with directorial teams so we'll pick a director to represent each pair, the first one alphabetically.
A little change regarding pairs this time. Any directors mentioned in the collaboration will be part of the collaboration. If there are any pairs that I missed let me know and I'll update this list:

Thanks for starting the thread, Rufus. Fellow member matthew was kind enough to preposition my Top 60:
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls055577708/

My core list hasn't been reworked since about 2015, although I try to update the missing titles for the present directors every year and then. I miiight stretch them to 66, but I don't feel as easily connected to a certain directing style as I was in my wild cinephile days of times long gone. I do this mostly for aesthetics that speak to me, so even a good portion of directors which hit 9/10s and myriads of 8/10s in their works didn't always get included in my list. Best chances for inclusions by 2025 go to about half of the A24 directors at the moment ..

One of the few polls I feel comfortable with posting an old list.

If I'll find the time (I won't) I'll update it.

Why? :)
As I understand, the usual way to go is using the name which comes up first alphabetically (compare all non-related, non-brotherly director pairs in the list). By that, it would be Ethan.
On the contrary, Joel Coen is the one of both who could be nominated on his own since he released his solo debut The Tragedy of Macbeth last year. -_-
To make things more confusing in future, Ethan has also a solo documentary coming up, but that isn't relevant for our poll yet.

btw, the brothers will have made no feature together for 5 years now by 2023. (u)

Just thinking about the collaboration, I am considering the mentioning of any in collaboration would be considered as the group instead of just one person representing. That way, we can avoid the Joel Cohen situation a couple months ago. Let me know if anyone has objection.

I guess I'd be fine with that, but I'm looking at the fact that Michael Powell is the one you're supposed to vote for if you want to vote for Powell & Pressburger right now, so it makes sense to me that Joel should be the one to represent the pairing, since, like Powell, he has made a film out of the pairing, which Ethan hasn't yet. Not sure what to do once Ethan makes a film though.

Really interesting to see Graf listed this high up. I'm yet to see any of his films but Fabian is amongst my top remaking "should sees" from 2021, so this will definitely push it even higher up my watchlist. Also bookmarked The Friend of Friends. Munchen does not seem to be available with English subtitles.

Wrong Mark Rappaport ;)

Though this reminds me that I need to check out more of his films.

I considered making subtitles for it sometime but I very little time right now. I managed to watch 3 and a half feature films this december so far... I could see you really liking the Munich film though. It's the most obscure film in my top 100 right now, probably partly due to the inavailability of subtitles.

I think Fabian is a good intro into Graf though (it was what initially made me a fan) and all Michael Mann films should seek out Die Katze and Die Sieger. I think the former is better than anything Mann ever made.

Still don't feel confident enough to rank directors in any order that feels sufficient. Maybe next year.

RANKED

It is my intention to expand the list to a full 300, maybe even slightly more, but it takes time to put name-lists together and it seems wise to pose here at the moment lest I later forget.

Highest new additions to my list

34. Quentin Dupieux
65. Asghar Farhadi
94. Xavier Dolan
109. Wong Jing
119. Andrei Tarkovsky
124. James Cameron
196. Ti West
205. Alberto Cavalcanti
219. Kelly Reichardt
225. Yuen Wing-poo
232. David Lynch
235. John Farrow
243. Bruce McDonald
250. Sammo Hung
251. Johnnie To
254. Sergio Corbucci
266. Susan Seidelman
271. Liu Chia-Liang
292. Jean-Pierre Melville

Most of these are filmmakers who I was familiar with but for whom I had not seen my self-imposed minimum amount to include them until this year. Wong Jing was probably the only really brand new discovery.

You gotta be kidding!
I finally expanded my Former "Top 50" (with 60 names) to a Top 60 (with .. 64 names, of course!) just this Christmas. Half of my new entries are:
42. Asghar Farhadi
49. Quentin Dupieux

:woot:

(The other two #40 PTA because it was about time and... #63 ATJ, the Dane. Sorry! )
I also have Yorgos Lanthimos rather close to entering. Give it one more film and let's see.
If Ari Aster and Robert Eggers become more productive, the mid-2020s could open another slot.
OLD directors, on the other hand, I dunno. Would have to import stuff to Criticker to really get a idea what I've seen over the years. I felt like Fritz Lang would rise in my rankings because of some noirs I've watched but it turns out I didn't enjoy them that much as other noirs? Oh.
