iCM Forum World Cup - Season 5 - Round 1 schedule

#1

Post by joachimt »

Welcome to the schedule of iCM Forum World Cup - Season 5 - Round 1.
If you don't know what this is, you can find everything about the World Cup here.

Rules in the group phase:
- You must watch all 5 films of a match before you vote.
- To vote, rank the 5 films from most favorite to least favorite. (note: you're ranking the individual films, not the countries)
- The top 2 of each group will proceed to the next round.
The winners of the match will be decided using these rules:
  • Ranked by highest average ranking (= lowest number).
  • In case of a tie between two movies, head-to-head determines the winner (how many people thought A>B and how many thought B>A).
  • In case there's still a tie after the previous rule or there is a tie between three or four movies, most #1-votes determines the winner.
  • Still a tie? Fewest #5-votes determines the winner.
  • Still a tie? The match will have a 3 day extension (except when the tie is only between #3, #4 or #5).
  • Same rules apply to determine second place, of course.
- Don't vote in this thread. Each match will have its own thread according to the schedule.

Wow, only seen 6/38 (8/40 actually but I obviously checked my two picks), should be interesting but I expected a bit less homework for this 1st round

I've only seen 3 of these films excluding my own two picks, very excited to start delving into everyone's choices. There's some that have been on my radar for a while but a lot that I have never heard of - this looks promising.

Seen 2 other than mine so hopefully I can get through the other 36 with no problem.

On a side note the English name for 339 Amin Abel Hasbun. Memoria de un crimen. (At least according to Kanopy) is 339 Amín Abel Hasbun - Memory of a Crime

I've seen 15/40 but not even one from the least obscure group, A.

Some records were tied or broken; Icelandic film is by far the most recent one (from this year, 4 years newer than Dogman who held the record), while the Dominican film tied the 1-check record with Albanian movie from previous seasons (apparently only their managers have seen them before it started).

Seen 10/40 including one dislike. Some really good choices for most countries though (films I would have chosen if I was managing them too).

Starting at 6/40, including my two picks, with another 15 I already had watchlisted. This will give me the kick in the pants to watch some of the ones I've been putting off for ages.

Round 1 to take half a year??? Some wartime pace.
Not even a total blackout and romantic life will make me fail to catch up with these movies.

Personally I'm glad with the low pace. I constantly have to make choices which movies to watch on MUBI and TUBI before they disappear from the service. Squeezing in other movies rarely fits.

Just contacted DimitrisPsachos to help me with translation of my Cyprus' entry (some lower lines are missing)... He refused but apologized, and said he had some arguments with other icm members... I didn't know about that, I guess that's the reason he left this place.

I wonder what was the issue, and who was involved. :(

For reference: He didn't leave, he was banned. He consistently broke rule 1 (along with other rules), received verbal and official warnings, and after it was clear he did not take heed was informed he would be placed on temporary bans if he continued, which he did. The temporary bans had no effect and he made it clear in PMs he would continue to break rule 1 and did so because he did not respect the rules.

Very frustrating case as he is clearly knowledgeable about cinema and I would have loved to have him post here. He is permanently banned, but if he ever changes his mind on the rules and would like to moderate how he speaks to others we could always reconsider. We hate banning people, and it is only done when it is clear there is no other option.

Yes I noticed with many people that they see easing back or calming the situation as weakness, unfortunately. Even in everyday life, if you don't live in a big place like myself we often meet same people here and there, so why crossing the street or staring down if you're likely to spend all your life within same community? Clear the issues with everybody and say hello at least.
But I could see the problem with rule 2 for example; once I was hanging out Saturday night I told some people that "----------" and some simp called me an "arrogant jerk" in a threating tone. No doubt I would be penalized in virtual world (here, that is) as well.

Not to derail the topic at hand, but regarding the rules and moderation practices:

Rule 1:
1. No personal abuse or attacks should be directed at another user. Arguments can get heated, but never personal.
It is not even calming the situation that's the issue, heated debate is perfectly acceptable, and even aggressive/angry discussions are tolerated. What is not tolerated is personal abuse. I.e. keep the conversation about the topic and stay off the person. Name-calling, direct personal insults, etc. is just not welcome, productive or healthy for discourse.

Re: Rule 1 and Dimitris - We kept trying to explain to him that there are so many ways to put down arguments and even be rude/aggressive if he really wanted to without breaking the rules, but he sadly had a specific wish to insult people's person.

Rule 2:
2. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, etc. will be tolerated
This rule is essential to ensure that everyone feels welcomed and are not harrassed/attacked just because of who they happened to be born as/who they are. This is a film forum so there is no need whatsoever to generalise or deride people by their gender, race, etc. If a user is racist, sexist, transphobic, etc. or have views that could be interpreted as such under the rules all they need to do is park that at the door and take it somewhere else (the same goes for all the rules).

I took the liberty of moderating out what you quoted above (for the reference of this conversation it was fairly mild, but generalising people by X gender and making an absolutist statement about something X gender does) as yes, if reported that could indeed have been seen as a violation of Rule 2. We rarely get reports of Rule 2 violations, and I can't actually remember a remotely recent report connected to sexism off-hand (someone else might have handled it if there was) so language/views of this kind don't seem to be used much/if at all here.

-

I think the rules in general are extremely basic and very easy to follow, which is why we also rarely have reports and almost no one has trouble following them.

Maybe try reaching out to kingink instead? I know he's done translations in the past, but I don't know how to get ahold of him. Last check on icm was 8 months ago and he hasn't been on the forum in over a year, but he's regularly rating films on imdb (2 just today) so he's at least active somewhere.

He's already seen the film (unlike Dimitris), so he'd have to step out of his daily activities just to please me. I hate when I have to beg for someting, so I'll just let the subs as they are.

I managed to find the translation of the main theme song, which is damn beautiful
Spoiler
, however google translate gave me something ridiculously out of line. I thus decided not to add anything that only resembles translation, sort of.

starting my watchlists for 2023 and the world cup now... heads up for the next round: is Bir Cänub Shähärindä (1969) really only available on YouTube????

When I stream that, I risk Youtube forcing commercials ad random et nauseam or the stream reducing in quality because of weak wifi... so I would really appreciate it if somebody is able to get this here, or somewhere, in a more stable form!!! please

Don't worry about me missing a starting date or deadline. My phone is automatically going to remind me of every date for round 1. I just wasn't home yet earlier today. Weekend away with with and kids and just got back.
