The Host's Hot Take
Pretty expected results, I'd say, though it's nice to see that the forum has such a big appreciation for Japanese cinema, with no film getting more than 3 #1 spots, and producing one of our largest top lists for these polls, spreading the wealth among a number of films. Classic post-war cinema dominated, but 21st century films were the second-biggest bunch, showing two distinct time periods that our users tend to appreciate. Kurosawa and Ghibli did very well, naturally, with few other surprises among the results. Human Condition 1 & 3 making the top 20, and then 2 down at #50 is a bit surprising to me, but it's nice that all three made the final list. I'll add a few lists for popular directors, as it's a bit hard to see them in the top lists. Some surprising choices there, I think, in terms of which films garnered support and which didn't.

It was the first thing I noticed. Feels shocking to me. The second film is the best of the trilogy in my opinion. I know I'm in the minority there, but I'm surprised that the forum's regard for #2 is so much lower than for the first and third chapters.

In the main forum poll last year they were much closer: #11, #17, and #20. It's when you only have 20 slots that people have to start making tough decisions.

I love this so much.
Thanks for your work, for the whole country polls. Thanks to (and for) the Forum and their fantastic collected tastes. Thanks for Japan and their incredible film culture

Might comment on a thing or two tomorrow.
But for now:
1.: Human Condition 2 so far off - I understand it. Response overall isn't as strong as for 1 and 3. Additionally, some people might even only vote for Part 1 to represent the whole trilogy. I went for Part 3 instead, the one to finally break me. (joachim had a similar reaction to the movie, it seems.)
2. The insane director dominance in the Top 20, with a lot of the names continuing in the Top 50 and extending for the Top 100(+6). Those are TITANS. It wasn't this extreme for France, afair, maybe not even for Germany (at least it shouldn't if people voted right ), and I'm sure as hell it hadn't that look for the US of A.

I'm very happy with the list, thanks to all voters! Currently missing 9, highest one being Sound of the Mountain. I think I expected Ozu to be one of the top 3 most represented directors, but this top 5 is more aligned with my taste. No Kinoshita though? The main reason I haven't seen Imamura's Narayama yet is that I liked the original so much that I expect it to be lesser than... His films did fine in 500<400 too.

Yamadas is one of the best IMO and also one of the ones I can imagine working the best for you.

I'm always surprised by just how popular Seppuku is here, and interesting to see Kobayashi and Teshigara having the films that won this and the forum poll with Kurosawa coming in 2nd each time.

Happy 3 Yoshidas at least made the cut.
