I'll note that two ballots (by cinewest and magnusberhardsen) couldn't be counted as they didn't include IMDB links.

longsilence and Insomnius noted their ballots as partially ranked, which the spreadsheet used for this doesn't really allow for (nor do the rules stated in the first post of the thread), so I counted them as fully unranked. I do apologize for not catching that earlier - had I done so, I'd have given them the ability to chose whether they wanted to rank their whole ballot or have it unranked, but since most of the titles on their ballots were in the unranked portion, I just went with that.

Thanks !

Pleased to see great Asian films entering the top 20 this time around: The Terrorizers, The Horse Thief, Dust in the Wind, A Better Tomorrow.

Thanks for hosting this poll, Teproc!

There is some weird things going on with the list - where some of the placements are out of order, but idk if that's intentional or not...

I'm glad I was able to save a couple films - like Dobro pozhalovat. Although I completely forgot to mention Night Music is another high quality short film, but whatever, it still made the list.

Anyway, here's how my ballot did with their rank on the left, then my rank in parentheses, follow by my sad panda orphans at the bottom.

Rank: 18 - (01.) Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Rank: 08 - (02.) Le rayon vert
Rank: 34 - (03.) Ginger e Fred
Rank: 80 - (05.) Night Music
Rank: 91 - (06.) Blood Hook
Rank: 07 - (07.) Stand by Me
Rank: 01 - (08.) Blue Velvet
Rank: 53 - (10.) Big Trouble in Little China
Rank: 75 - (11.) Chopping Mall
Rank: 57 - (13.) Labyrinth
Rank: 06 - (14.) Castle in the Sky
Rank: 94 - (16.) Dobro pozhalovat! (Welcome)
Rank: 68 - (19.) BabaKiueria

Orphans:
04. Armour of God
09. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
12. Class of Nuke 'Em High
15. Cobra
17. Thrashin'
18. Killer Party
20. The Magical World of Disney: Mr. Boogedy
Cinema Safari (Currently working on Inyo County, CA + Zimbabwe upgrade) Help recommend me movies to watch) Letterboxd

Interesting results. Essentially, if I had not rewatched The Sacrifice it would have come in 2nd and what a duo to battle it out for 2nd (even if I never really understood the appeal of Aliens, such a ridiculous step down from the first, replacing tension with rather silly over the top action - might be one I should rewatch as well though).

Really pleased with how well In the Shadow of the Blue Rascal ended up doing. 28th with just 98 votes on IMDb is just incredible. Every film above it had 1,000+ votes, most 10,000+.

I'm also happy The Green Ray went upwards, though I would have hoped it would have enjoyed an even greater push here, especially with the number of users placing it as their no. 1. Speaks to tough competition. It is only 9 (!) points away from being tied for 5th.

Also nice to see a list of more than 100 titles as the end result.

Seen 57/105. These are the films I'm missing in the top 50:

18. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
31. River's Edge
33. Shadows in Paradise
34. Ginger and Fred
36. The Mission
38. Little Shop of Horrors
41. Highlander
42. True Stories
45. Street of Crocodiles
48. Crocodile Dundee
49. The Big Easy

Been meaning to see Ginger and Fred for ages, but late Fellini lacks some appeal. Might push it and the other final films through for the directors run. The Mission is another film I keep meaning to see. Not that interested in the rest, but will see Shadow of Paradise eventually. (Kaurismaki is not quite for me, sadly).

From the longer list I need to watch Caravaggio, and I have had Labyrinth sitting around forever.

Cool results, although the lack of enthusiasm for Kin-dza-dza! had me kyu-ing.

I don't mean to be a nitpicker, but I noticed a couple of discrepancies (seen above). Were there 53 or 56 participants? And were there 371 or 245 movies that received votes?

Agreed. And surprised that that one actually did better on the IMDb Classics Board years ago - it would seem to be a better fit here. Well, you never can tell, especially with Soviet comedy.

Seen 70/106, which surprises me - I thought I'd missed more of the films "popular" enough to make it here. Top 5 unseen:

23. Salvador
27. À l'ombre de la canaille bleu
30. À Flor do Mar
33. Varjoja paratiisissa
34. Ginger e Fred

Though I should probably count 37°2 le matin as I've only seen the shorter Betty Blue cut - and that I don't even really remember. Then again that's true for an especially large number of films from this year - the late 80s are the period where I really started to go to the cinema, and these are often the years I've seen the most from, and have forgotten the most from.
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion..

The spreadsheet does indeed allow for partially ranked ballots. There's an explanation in cell B2, if you're using the same spreadsheet as the others are. It's a bit confusing at first, but once someone re-explained it to me (Gromit or maxwell or Rufus, I forget), it works correctly.
Instructions for "Unranked?" Column:

Enter "yes" (without the quotes) next to the person for every entry if ballot is unranked.

If partially ranked, enter the number of ranked entries (e.g., if the first 3 are ranked, enter a 3 next to the person for every entry.

Leave blank for ranked ballots.
So putting a "5" for longsilence's ballot and a "2" for insomnius's, instead of putting "yes" in column B, should have calculated the points correctly for their ballots.

I think it's really sad to have their ballots missing (disregarding whether I like their choices or not). As much as I thank you guys for organizing the polls and keeping up with all the wild stats hassle - any Forum member would be willing to collect the IMDb links for other users' lists within 5 minutes. I would do that. (And I wouldn't alter their votes, trust me. ;) ) I don't want the poll hosts to have more work than necessary, but this could have been solved so fast .. if it were accepted, which it isn't (as far as I understand). Now their next chance to participate for that year is in a decade or so.

The rules for this are clearly stated in the OP, have been the same for every yearly poll for as long as I can remember, and Teproc even quoted their posts to remind them to add the links. They missed their chance this time, happens to the best of us. It's no different from someone like Roger who missed the deadline completely, they just happened to post their preliminary incomplete ballots (and Magnus even stated his list was unfinished). I think Teproc is in the right to exclude the ballots, and while I don't see anything preventing other folks from posting the URLs on someone else's behalf, I do think people should take the time to submit their own lists properly, instead of relying on others.

To provide a little more background on this, I've seen enough errors with people posting their own lists of links to be reluctant to accept a list posted by another person.

When we did the 1978 poll, the winner changed twice while I was counting the ballots. The original #1 was Autumn Sonata, but it turned out that someone had mistakenly put the link for that film on their list twice. So Days of Heaven moved into the #1 position, but I found that someone had listed a different film's URL twice and thus omitted the link for The Deer Hunter. After giving the Cimino film its correct link and points, The Deer Hunter moved into #1.

I don't believe that Torgo or most other participants would intentionally alter someone's vote if they posted URLs for them, but there are ample opportunities to make errors just by getting one or two digits wrong. If you enter https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090756/ that's Blue Velvet, but if you transpose two digits and enter https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090576/ that's De aanslag, and if you tranpose two digits from that and enter https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090567/ that's 52 Pick-Up.

The transposing thing is true, done it a few times myself, which is why I always click on my imdb links after previewing my post to ensure my URLs are correct.

I never thought about the duplicate thing though. I'll have to start looking out for that. Hopefully it was never an issue in any of the country polls so far. :crossed_fingers:

longsilence and Insomnius noted their ballots as partially ranked, which the spreadsheet used for this doesn't really allow for (nor do the rules stated in the first post of the thread), so I counted them as fully unranked. I do apologize for not catching that earlier - had I done so, I'd have given them the ability to chose whether they wanted to rank their whole ballot or have it unranked, but since most of the titles on their ballots were in the unranked portion, I just went with that.

Yeah, I just... missed that, and since the basic language of the post doesn't mention partially ranked ballots, I assumed it couldn't do it. I'll see later this week if I can recalculate it, but I think the changes should be marginal, as both lists had very small ranked portions.

Re: cinewest and magnus's ballots, I'm not happy not to count them, but it does take quite a bit of time to compile the results, and I did ping them (as well as others, who did add links) beforehand. The rules are pretty clearly stated, and I don't have infinite time on my hands and, as evidenced by this thread, I already get plenty of things wrong on my own without having to go search for the urls myself.

Cool results, although the lack of enthusiasm for Kin-dza-dza! had me kyu-ing.
Agreed. And surprised that that one actually did better on the IMDb Classics Board years ago - it would seem to be a better fit here. Well, you never can tell, especially with Soviet comedy.
It’s good and fun but not enough to place in the top 20 of such a strong year in my book.

I'd never heard of Kin-dza-dza until somebody mentioned it recently. It's on my watchlist to check out during the Sci-Fi Challenge.

Thank you for the results! Lots of variety and films I didn't know of.
There are several loved ones that I wasn't expecting to see making it: The Rose King, Mirch Masala, His Motorbike Her Island, To Sleep So As to Dream, Bound for the Fields
My most wanted: Betty Blue, Therese, Mammame, Comrades, and those animated films look like very interesting discoveries too.
