Country Poll: Japan [CLOSED]

#1

Post by Fergenaprido »

Overview of the Project
Schedule

October 2022: Japan

Rules
* You may vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 titles.
* Feature films, documentaries, shorts, made-for-tv movies, direct-to-video movies, TV mini-series, and TV episodes from anthology series are all eligible.
* One country per film - IMDB is used as a guideline, but Fergenaprido will be the final arbiter for uncertain cases.
* All ballots are considered ranked unless otherwise stated.
* You must include a list of bare imdb URLs along with your ballot (preferably within a spoiler tag), otherwise your ballot will be disqualified.

Scoring
For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive the number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each successive title receiving one point less.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means #1 has 20 points, #2 has 19 points, and #20 has 1 point; a list with 5 titles means #1 has 5 points, #2 has 4 points, and #5 has 1 point.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted it the ballot had been ranked.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means each title would receive 10.5 points; a list with 5 titles means each title would receive 3 points.

Resources:
Japanese films sorted by number of votes*
Japanese films sorted by your rating on imdb*
Wikipedia article on Cinema of Japan
*due to imdb allowing films to be attributed to more than one country, many titles in this filter may be ineligible for this poll if Japan is not the primary country of production. Decisions about uncertain films will be listed in the second post of this thread.

Many thanks to Rufus-T & gromit82 for the framework from the Year by Year polls, and to maxwelldeux for the Excel template.

In case Dersu Uzala is ruled out:

or maybe
21. Tokyo Sonata (2008, Kiyoshi Kurosawa)
Yeah, I'm calling Dersu Uzala Russian for this project, so not eligible.

I have rated a total of 1167 features currently on MM, with next to these 20 another 54 with the almost perfect 4,5-star score, making Japan one of my favorite movie countries. According to LB I have seen 1340 movies from Japan, but that count includes shorts and all kind of co-productions that cannot really be called Japanese, including recent films like Nope and Annette...

A few years ago I made a list of my 50 favorite Japanes movies on LB, with a very similar but still slightly different ranking:

Thanks for your participation in the "Favorite anime + films directed by guys called Kurosawa" poll, Teproc! Your vote has been counted.

But yeah, I totally understand it and it's already obvious from the lists of airdoll and Onderhond - Japan's animated output alone is so good that it gives physical pain to remove a title for their also perfect life action features.

Yeah, my ballot is basically Ghibli + Kurosawa (amusingly both) + Paprika, but hey, can't help what I like. Other great Japanese films (of which there are many) will have to wait for a broader Japan poll to get my vote.

5. Princess Mononoke
6. Laputa: Castle In The Sky

Going to add my own ballot for now, though I've got a half dozen films I'd like to see before the deadline. I've got a robust Top 20 as it is, though, so won't be upset if nothing new breaks in. 3 of my top 20 are new watches from this year, however, so there's still plenty of great Japanese films for me to explore. Might also rewatch a few of the Ghibli films where I originally saw the English dub

1. Kaze no tani no Naushika [Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind] (1984)
2. Shichinin no samurai [Seven Samurai] (1954)
3. Hauru no ugoku shiro [Howl's Moving Castle] (2004)
4. Toki o kakeru shōjo [The Girl Who Leapt Through Time] (2006)
5. Tōkyō goddofāzāzu [Tokyo Godfathers] (2003)
6. Tsumiki no ie [The House of Small Cubes] (2008)
7. Tengoku to jigoku [High and Low] [Heaven and Hell] (1963)
8. Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi [Spirited Away] (2001)
9. Kakushi-toride no san-akunin [The Hidden Fortress] (1958)
10. Bakemono no ko [The Boy and the Beast] (2015)
11. Suna no onna [Woman in the Dunes] (1964)
12. Shitoyakana kedamono [The Graceful Brute] (1962)
13. Ohayō [Good Morning] (1959)
14. Mononoke-hime [Princess Mononoke] (1997)
15. Samā uōzu [Summer Wars] (2009)
16. Koe no katachi [A Silent Voice] (2016)
17. Kimi no na wa. [Your Name.] (2016)
18. Ikiru [To Live] (1952)
19. Yōjinbō [Yojimbo] (1961)
20. Seppuku [Harakiri] (1962)

Accepting that my list by no means is definitive and that in particular i barely have seen any classical Japanese cinema, i'll still do a top 20. I expect some other users will be the other way around with a good contribution to classical cinema. Of course i'm by no means an expert on modern Japanese cinema either, however i've seen far more than from some other countries.

1. Your Name. (Makoto Shinkai, 2016)
2. The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (Isao Takahata, 2013)
3. Angel's Egg (Mamoru Oshii, 1985)
4. Love Exposure (Sion Sono, 2008)
5. Helter Skelter (Mika Ninagawa, 2012)
6. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Hayao Miyazaki, 1984)
7. Kiki's Delivery Service (Hayao Miyazaki, 1989)
8. Belle (Mamoru Hosoda, 2022)
9. Wolf Children (Mamoru Hosoda, 2012)
10. Confessions (Tetsuya Nakashima, 2010)
11. Himizu (Sion Sono, 2011)
12. My Neighbor Totoro (Hayao Miyazaki, 1988)
13. Kawaki (Tetsuya Nakashima, 2014)
14. Like Father, Like Son (Hirokazu Koreeda, 2013)
15. Why Don't You Play in Hell? (Sion Sono, 2013)
16. Hana to Arisu (Shunji Iwai, 2004)
17. Antiporno (Sion Sono, 2016)
18. Tokyo Tribe (Sion Sono, 2014)

I'm not sure about this one.
Chinese director, Chinese location and crew, Chinese language title and dialogue.
IMDB: Japan (1), France (2), Hong Kong (3), but the production companies are listed unordered and are from Japan, Italy, and France.
According to Variety: Hong Kong (1), France (2), Japan (3), but the production company is French with Japanese and Italian companies co-producing.

So France and Hong Kong seem the best bets for now, unless it's one of those situations where France is providing outside funding to an international director, which could make sense here if the government of Mainland China didn't want this film to be made.

I couldn't find much other info online. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
