Country Poll: Senegal [CLOSED]

#1

Post by Fergenaprido »

Overview of the Project
Schedule

September 2022: Senegal

Rules
* You may vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 titles.
* Feature films, documentaries, shorts, made-for-tv movies, direct-to-video movies, TV mini-series, and TV episodes from anthology series are all eligible.
* One country per film - IMDB is used as a guideline, but Fergenaprido will be the final arbiter for uncertain cases.
* All ballots are considered ranked unless otherwise stated.
* You must include a list of bare imdb URLs along with your ballot (preferably within a spoiler tag), otherwise your ballot will be disqualified.

Scoring
For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive the number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each successive title receiving one point less.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means #1 has 20 points, #2 has 19 points, and #20 has 1 point; a list with 5 titles means #1 has 5 points, #2 has 4 points, and #5 has 1 point.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted it the ballot had been ranked.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means each title would receive 10.5 points; a list with 5 titles means each title would receive 3 points.

Resources:
Senegalese films sorted by number of votes*
Senegalese films sorted by your rating on imdb*
Wikipedia article on Cinema of Senegal
*due to imdb allowing films to be attributed to more than one country, many titles in this filter may be ineligible for this poll if Senegal is not the primary country of production. Decisions about uncertain films will be listed in the second post of this thread.

Many thanks to Rufus-T & gromit82 for the framework from the Year by Year polls, and to maxwelldeux for the Excel template.

This should be interesting because while Senegal has the third largest filmic output of all Sub-Saharan African countries (after South Africa and Nigeria), there are less than 200 Senegalese films out there according to Letterboxd. Not a complaint, more a comment/observation, and yeah I know I missed out on the discussion/planning phase, my bad, this will be interesting nonetheless.

OK here are some co-productions to consider -

Mandabi (1968) - the first feature in an indigenous language, it would be a shame for this to be ineligible
Toubab Bi (1991)
L'extraordinaire destin de Madame Brouette (2002)
Aujourd'hui (2012)
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion..

Opening this thread up early to help kickstart the conversation and hopefully garner more interest and encourage people to watch more films from Senegal so we don't end up with a Top List full of Sembene films. :D

With the Philippines looking like it will do just fine to get enough films for the final top list, this will be the second test (after NZ) to gauge forum interest in films from smaller countries. I hope I wasn't wrong in thinking that if any Sub-Saharan country (aside from South Africa) could do it, this was it. :fingers_crossed:

And so I might as well start off with my own preliminary ballot.

1. Moolaadé (2004)
2. Atlantique [Atlantics] (2019)
3. Ça twiste à Poponguine [Rocking Popenguine] (1994)
4. Camp de Thiaroye [Camp at Thiaroye] (1988)
5. Ceddo [The Outsiders] (1977)
6. Mandabi [The Money Order] (1968)
7. La petite vendeuse de soleil [The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun] (1999)
8. La pirogue [The Pirogue] (2012)
9. Xala (1975)
10. Félicité (2017)
11. Ndeysaan [The Price of Forgiveness] (2001)
12. Borom sarret [The Wagoner] (1963)
13. Aqua (1989)
14. Ousmane (2006)
15. Mossane (1996)
16. Toubabi Bi (1991)
17. Et la neige n'était plus... [And the Snow Was Gone] (1966)
18. Touki Bouki [Journey of the Hyena] (1973)
19. Hyènes [Hyenas] (1992)
20. Fary l'anesse [Fary the Donkey] (1990)
Spoiler
5/14 are Sembene. I got some exploring to do! 7/20 are Sembene.

And now back to processing the Brazilian results.

4,0 Touki Bouki (1973)
3,5 Baamum Nafi (2019)

First production company is Senegalese, so eligible. I've submitted a correction to imdb. I'm also planning to watch this before the deadline, so if something comes up in the credits to change my mind, I'll let y'all know.

Toubab Bi (1991)
Hmm, I have this on my ballot, but there are no Senegalese production companies listed on imdb. I'll have to double check my copy. TBD

L'extraordinaire destin de Madame Brouette (2002)
Wasn't expecting Canada to pop up there. 3 production companies from 3 different countries are listed, but not ordered. I'm leaning toward eligible, but I'll also try and track this film down and watch it and check the on screen credits. TBD, but probably eligible

Aujourd'hui (2012)
French-Senegalese production, with Berlinale listing France first, with 2 French and 1 Senegalese production company. Gomis himself is French-born of Senegalese descent and has worked in both countries. But it also won the FESPACO. So, I'm unsure, but will also try to track this one down. TBD

I think 'Wùlu' is a French-backed Malian film, shot in Senegal because of the security situation. French funding could result in a plethora of African films being ruled out.

Yep, I ruled on this back during the French poll. Either way, not eligible for this one. :)

No worries. The last three countries of the year will be bigger ones and should elicit more participation. :)

I don't think anyone was going to vote for 'Wùlu' in a poll on French cinema, heehee. I'm just saying I'd have it as a Mali/France or France/Mali production rather than a France/Senegal one. It was shot in Senegal but it's a a Malian story.

I'd like to vote for it when we come to the Mali poll, but I'll make my case for it then. I agree that it shouldn't be eligible here.

I might have been the only one, then. :D

Maybe I'll revisit it when we have a poll that includes Mali, but for now I prefer to just kick it down the line until then. I dun wanna deal with it now. :ph43r:

Senegal is the African country I have seen the most from (even counting Egypt), but that still only amounts to 15 (more than half consists of Sembene films ..), of which two are favourites, and then we quickly get to good but not great territory. I'll add in two almost great films just to be able to submit a top 5:

1. Hyènes (1992, Djibril Diop Mambéty) 9/10
2. Camp de Thiaroye (1988, Ousmane Sembene, Thierno Faty Sow) 8.5/10
3. Atlantique (2019, Mati Diop) 8/10
4. Touki-Bouki (1973, Djibril Diop Mambéty) 7.5/10
5. Le franc (1994, Djibril Diop Mambéty)

Looking forward to the results and hopefully finding some more great films.

That surprises me, I thought for sure you'd have seen a good number of Egyptian films over the years, but it's the same for me too. :D
Senegal (16 of which 5 are Sembene), Egypt (11) then South Africa (9).

No problem. :)

I'll probably start asking for suggestions for 2023 around October, after the main forum poll and challenge schedules start to shape up, so be ready to let me know your opinions in that thread around that time.

Senegal

01. Touki-Bouki
02. Félicité
03. Atlantique
04. La Petite Vedeuse du Soleil
05. La Noire de...
06. Guelwaar

Maybe there's an eligibility issue with Félicité ? The Senegalese production company was mentioned first at the films credits (which for me is decisive in my personal database), wikipedia calls it a Senegalese production. But it's maybe Congolese, Tanzanian or even just French...? In that case just ignore this title and move 3-6 one place up. edit I just noticed you've included that title yourself... :D

Yeah, it's a rare African film made by one country but taking place in another. Didn't realize it had so many countries listed, or that seemingly French companies are first on imdb, but when I saw it I definitely remember it being a Senegalese film. I saw it on a plane, though, so couldn't verify credits afterward (those screens are so small the credits are usually impossible to read). Digging a bit deeper it's a co-production mainly between France and Senegal, including from a French institute that specifically funds foreign filmmakers working with French producers, so I'm going to continue to consider it eligible. It's also making me rethink my Wúlu decision, but I'll deal with that later. :innocent:

And your URLs don't work Yume (do you mind if I don't put the spaces every time?).

Only 385 movies from Senegal according to IMDb. I've seen 17. Only four of them I rated 8+. Not enough for me to participate.

Are you including shorts in your count of 17? I know people sometimes forget about them, but they are eligible for these polls.

Yes. I followed your link in the OP and also did an advanced search on IMDb myself (country =Senegal, Restrict to titles I've seen).

Are you including shorts in your count of 17? I know people sometimes forget about them, but they are eligible for these polls.
Yes. I followed your link in the OP and also did an advanced search on IMDb myself (country =Senegal, Restrict to titles I've seen).
Well, at least you tried. :)

P.S. The link in the OP is an advanced search, so what you did you should have given the same results unless you also included tv-series and other formats that are excluded for this poll.

Sorry for the delay, I missed this while I was on holidays.

Senegalese-French co-production, it is eligible for this poll.

Can't make a top 20 for Senegal, but I can piece together a top 10 and given that I doubt I'll see anything else before month's end, here's my measly list:

1. Xala (1975)
2. Manadabi (1968)
3. Saloum (2021)
4. Félicité (2017)
5. Hyenas (1992)
6. Black Girl (1966)
7. Borom Sarret (1963)
8. Le Franc (1994)
9. Atlantique (2019)
10. Ceddo (1977)

RANKED - though very hard decision between #s 1 and 2.
