ICM Forum's Favorite Music Videos
Nominations

Music videos.... we always wonder if they can or should be included on films polls ....

Not this time as this poll is simply dedicated to them !

Most oldies like your host will remember growing up with MTV and the golden era of video clips...

But we do hope to be reminded by the YouTube generation that music videos are still the thing and show us what kind of cinematographic (or not) video clips are released and shown theses days.

We hope to discover some cool moment of pure animated pictures but also some cool new or old music as well.

We are all used to check movies ... Let's check some music videos for a change as most are kind of an small movie condensed in a few mins.
--> It's the first time we attempt this Poll : make it count.

We'll see about the poll half-life depending on the lists we got from the voters.
Try to stick to the Music Video TAG @IMDB if possible, but feel free to fight for the alternative if you think it's Music Video-esque enought.

DEADLINE = End of August 2022, weekend of 2-3 September

IMDb- or iCM-lists are accepted. (If you can't make one of those, ask another user to help you out.)
Lists can be any length.
Each nominee can only be named once (of course)
Lists can be ranked or unranked or partially-ranked. In a partially-ranked list, the top X films are ranked and everything after that point is unranked. When not specified I will consider a list as ranked.

Question: What about live concerts (e.g. "Rammstein: Live in Berlin" & "Marilyn Manson: Guns, God and Government" & "Unplugged: Nirvana") or music video compilations (e.g. "Lest We Forget: The Video Collection" (Marilyn Manson) & "Closure" (Nine Inch Nails) & "Rammstein: Lichtspielhaus") or projects that are essentially visual accompaniment for musical albums (e.g. "Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem" & "Oddsac" & "Tool: Salival" & "Ghosts" (Michael Jackson) & "Umfeld" & "Nine Inch Nails: Broken" & "Trapped in the Closet") or more special projects are are somewhere between live concerts and performance art turned into cinema (e.g. "Das Auge des Taifun" & "1/2 Mensch")?

This would be their one chance to have a day in the sun among cinephiles.

The playlist is not precisely ranked (which it couldn't be since my list is still very much under construction) but it roughly is in accordance with the videos I value most in descending order. I tried to keep it reasonably varied so you don't have the same music artist 3 times in a row or something like that (except maybe towards the end, which nobody will get to anyway).
The bigger "music film projects" that in my eyes qualify for the list I all bundled together about 20 songs into the playlist so if you like to keep things short and sweet and flowing you can skip that section with ease. I do encourage people to watch them, though, provided you can stand the music.

Very very excited for this poll! My taste in music is somewhat limited to pop and more recent avant-pop and artpop artists, so I'm excited to see other people's lists and branch out more! I will definitely be adding to my list this month.

I know for a fact several of mine are tagged wrong on IMDB so I will defend my choices if necessary.

I've made a list of 155 music video's, unranked (alphabetically on artist name), but a lot of them don't seem to have an Imdb entry and I don't use Imdb anyway, so there is no way to submit this as a proper list unless somebody really dedicated is going to make that work...

Could at least be an inspiration to look into. I know I've probably forgotten tonns of great vids myself. I used to be more into them. Even after Mtv got lame, there was always https://videos.antville.org/ to go to on the Internet, as THE source for cool music! But I will never check these things on ICM... as they are not movies

Yeah, it's definitely a tough call. I'm on the fence with Streets of Philadelphia because it's so good even though it's very simple. I might add it later.

For me, I guess it's about the proportion of the video which just shows the artist performing and whether that performance involves doing something else. For example, I put Karma Police in my list because even though we see Thom Yorke singing video, it's not the focus and he's singing while taking part in a narrative scene (a bizarre one). David Byrne's Make Believe Mambo, on the other hand, I left off. I love the music, and it looks cool, but the whole video is just Byrne and friends singing and dancing around a filmset. Janelle Monae's tightrope I included because even though the whole thing is singing and dancing, there's some really complex dancing going on, along with plenty of other weirdness.

There's a part of me that wants to just forget this criteria and add whichever videos I like best, but I think I would end up with videos where I really like the music and the visuals wouldn't be so important.

Look at my n°1. It isn't even on IMDb and ICM and when you have watched that video,

you'll impossibly be able to say

the writing is bad
and that the visuals suck.

It's even experimental (in terms of filming). And the melody will take some time to grow.

But... there is no real consensus and some consensus is just fake or forced. I mean... it's just so subjective, there's no consensus around music videos.

In the 80s, 90s and early 00s almost everybody watched music videos. They were an essential part of pop culture. MTV's decision to stop showing music videos and replace them by reality soaps was the worst decision in television history.

It's one of the reasons why young people don't watch much TV anymore. I kept watching music videos on YouTube, and there are many good ones, but it's not the same. They don't belong to collective memory anymore.

I could maybe think about a solution to the No IMDB problem ... if people keep using an clear separator between the Artist and the song's name. Beavis used :, Laki used - ... So far so good ... i'll take a look if i can handle the extra work ... : no garantee yet

The : is what imdb is using, so i stuck to that. But it is already causing a problem with a bandname also containing one: Yourcodenameis:milo

Thank you, that would be awesome!

I've already noticed that some music videos with no IMDb / ICM entry already have been named twice so it probably would be worth it at the end (even if it might be some work, but i think excel can "detect : or - "the clear separators" as you mention, but if such a separator is used in the titles or band name it might cause some confusion, i'll quickly check my list whether there are any out of place separators).

You barely have like four music videos from the 2010s so apparently nothing can be a pinnacle of a music video experiment in 2022 anymore, since everything will be too lame for you. Secondly, the four ones are definitely not more experimental than the ones i've named. Rude Boy by Rihanna experimental?

It isn't a simple as say, good luck mastering the choreography for a shot in reverse music video... Sounds easy, is hard to execute.

My point being: "herding for music videos" makes even less sense than herding for film in general.

Maybe say it doesn't appeal to you or that you follow blindly music video critics (if that even is a thing? a music video critic)? But don't tell the visuals suck, because that absolutely isn't true.

One thing this doesn't have which "don't be so hard on your own beauty" does have, is a story, is choreography and the filter is also less amateuristic. It's basically a timelapse on repeat (look at the swans).

Also RYM disagrees with you. It's currently 324th best music video of all-time there, and we aren't talking about the most known artist (since they usually get more votes because people know more about them).

wow, i have never seen such a beautiful music video. Usually i do not care for music videos that much, but this video caught me off guard.
The effects, the nature, their expressive dancing, their costume ,the music and the camera...
It is artful but not artificial, simple but not low quality, quirky but very intimate.
on top of that the reverse effect adds a mysterious tone to their singing.
it feels so studied and perfectly put together without loosing it's simplicity. artists often want music videos to be over the top or artsy to the point where the emotions or the production style feels forced or incoherent. but this video does not feel to me this way at all.
And I am just blown away by how the colour effects and the tone of the music create such a nostalgic feeling.

To be fair, i think you can extend this observation to "music in general". I feel like there's no music or little music left in our collective memory today, since due to the rise of streaming services for listening music, more traditional ways of listening music have disappeared, and there's little "collective memory" or consensus making left today in the area of music, simply due to the huge libraries of music available to us. If someone wants to listen to some korean house music or to brazilian soul, there's nobody stopping them from doing so (if they are connected to the internet). That's a huge part in explaining why people feel music has become worse over the years, not just "music is bad nowadays" or "i was more up-to-date with music in the past and was raised in a different era". Music today is a very differentiated and fractured field of domain with tastes often not really overlapping throughout a number of styles since few people have been able to build experience to get used to those new styles, since the mainstream ways of discovering music all have disappeared or mainly restrict to electropop today. And I believe in the theory that one has to be exposed to some styles for a certain amount of time before one can appreciate them fully or enjoy them.

Yup, couldn't agree more. Well, except I'm not sure that it's why young people watch TV - I think there are a whole lot of reasons for that. But collective joy in culture generally is something that seems to be slipping away; not that there was ever anything that was TRULY universal, but it seems we're farther from it than we've been in my lifetime. Splintering.

Is there a ruling on whether only "official music videos" are eligible for the poll? Or is it any video that uses a song as the soundtrack? For example, I'd like to nominate this video which uses the audio for the song "Pink Batman" by Dan Deacon:

With people putting a lot of "home made" stuff up on youtube, it is sometimes very hard to tell what is official or not. The amateur works can be very well done indeed. But I personally wouldn't want to poll youtube vids... the music vid genre in itself is already a borderline subject...

I almost put this Beta Evers video in my list, but luckily I read the youtube description just in time... it had me fooled / I wouldn't mind if she declared it an official vid

Is this official enough?

It's basically a fan made video made by some Russians (one of those directors now directs short films and moved to the US after the positive reception of this video, and is now in LA as well as studying something to do with film).

Grimes was impressed and declared it her official video afterwards. (see tumblr post: https://actuallygrimes.tumblr.com/post/ ... echnically )

PROTIP / fan wish: if some of you have the energy to set up Youtube playlists for your nominations, that might be able to attract other voters for your top picks .. or entertain dumbasses who will never come up with an own list out of laziness.

At least it would be a super cool feature for the result list, how long it ever may get. (I guess 100, but 200 or so music videos would still be completely bingeable for most of us Forumers)
