Country Poll: Brazil [CLOSED]

#1

Post by Fergenaprido »

Overview of the Project
Schedule

July 2022: Brazil

Rules
* You may vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 titles.
* Feature films, documentaries, shorts, made-for-tv movies, direct-to-video movies, TV mini-series, and TV episodes from anthology series are all eligible.
* One country per film - IMDB is used as a guideline, but Fergenaprido will be the final arbiter for uncertain cases.
* All ballots are considered ranked unless otherwise stated.
* You must include a list of bare imdb URLs along with your ballot (preferably within a spoiler tag), otherwise your ballot will be disqualified.

Scoring
For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive the number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each successive title receiving one point less.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means #1 has 20 points, #2 has 19 points, and #20 has 1 point; a list with 5 titles means #1 has 5 points, #2 has 4 points, and #5 has 1 point.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted it the ballot had been ranked.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means each title would receive 10.5 points; a list with 5 titles means each title would receive 3 points.

Resources:
Brazilian films sorted by number of votes*
Brazilian films sorted by your rating on imdb*
Wikipedia article on Cinema of Brazil
*due to imdb allowing films to be attributed to more than one country, many titles in this filter may be ineligible for this poll if Brazil is not the primary country of production. Decisions about uncertain films will be listed in the second post of this thread.

Many thanks to Rufus-T & gromit82 for the framework from the Year by Year polls, and to maxwelldeux for the Excel template.

Good question. Brazilian director, Portuguese setting and cast (I think), and one Portuguese and two Brazilian production companies, though no source indicates if any of them are the primary one. Any Portuguese speakers out there who could maybe find more information in the native language?

Exciting to see O Signo do Caos on your list Beavis. I might give that a try before the end of the month as I have not seen Sganzerla later work - which seems to be almost entirely focused on Orson Welles, with Nem Tudo é Verdade and Tudo É Brasil as well. (The latter does not have subtitles, but there is an English language version).

I'm hoping to watch a few more Brazilian films before the deadline and may come back to extend my list if any of these viewings prove fruitful. That being said, I'm currently unable to field a list for the Philippines Poll, so finding favourites from the Philippines is more of a priority than fleshing out this list:

1. Invisible Life
2. Central Station
3. City of God
4. Brainstorm
5. Carandiru
6. The Given Word
7. Elite Squad
8. Elite Squad 2
9. The Second Mother
10. Kiss of the Spider Woman
11. Assault on the Pay Train
12. The Man from the Future
13. They don't wear Black Tie

I'm going to say France. Most sources list it as a French-Italian-Brazilian co-production, with imdb listing the three main companies as 2 French and 1 Italian, with further support from 2 French and 2 Brazilian companies. It won the César for Best Doc, and won the Cinema Brazil Grand Prize for best foreign-language film (listing it as France/Italy), though it was also nominated for the Prêmio Guarani for Best Doc.

St. Gloede wrote: July 6th, 2022, 8:18 am Exciting to see O Signo do Caos on your list Beavis. I might give that a try before the end of the month as I have not seen Sganzerla later work - which seems to be almost entirely focused on Orson Welles, with Nem Tudo é Verdade and Tudo É Brasil as well. (The latter does not have subtitles, but there is an English language version).
clearly his best work ;)

I have seen only 6 of his movies, the other 5 al rated 3.5 stars, I do love his work in general very much
Added it in as my 20th, replacing one Sganzerla for another. Thanks for making me prioritise it.

I like the Pixote and Invisible Life love from some people. Invisible Life is a top 3-5 of the 2010s film in my book.

Welcome to the forum/country polls Renault (or is this just a new username?).

Both films look poised to land a spot on the final list, probably within the Top 20. We shall see!

Not sure about this one. Canadian-Brazilian production, filmed in both countries with Canadian producer & screenwriter and Brazilian director, and international cast.

Incidentally, just discovered it was partially filmed in my university city while I was there and never knew it.

I've posted here in the past, but I was having some trouble with my username before, and the previous posts all got deleted somehow. I'm not sure why, but yes, I'm the same RenaultR that was posting here earlier in 2022.

Okay. I have edited my post to include an additional film, and I have relegated Tyger down to a reserve just in case.

I'm going to say yes to both.

An argument could be made for Black Orpheus being French, but based on the limited production information I could find, I'm going to call it Brazilian for this project.

That leaves me stuck at 22 for the moment

Did something a little different for this poll, eliminating various films I had rated higher like Pixote, Central do Brasil, Bacurau, Four Days in September, Terra Extrangeira, Carandiru, Aquarius, Onibus 174, etc., in order to make room for all the filmmakers I wanted to give attention to, and my order could look somewhat different on a different day, but so it is:
