ICM Forum's Favorite Performers, 2022 Edition

Welcome the 2022 edition of the favorite performers poll. This is the first time I am running this poll, so please be bear with me as I am working out the nitty gritty.

WHO ARE THE PERFORMERS
1) Performers has to be a human being: animals (Asta in The Thin Man), cartoon characters (Mickey Mouse), or props do not count
2) Performer must be an individual person. Group performers, such as the Marx Brothers or The Beatles are not allowed, but the individuals within the group are allowed.
3) Performers can be any actor or actress who had appeared in at least one feature film, short film, TV-movie, Mini-series, or TV show that require acting in a part (including enactment in documentary)
4) Appearance in only documentary or live performance in a show such as late night or stand up comedy or reality show as they appeared as themselves do not count.
5) Performers appeared only as voice over such as in narration, dubbed singing, or voice for animation do not count.

RULES
1) Please post a link of IMDb list of your favorite performers
2) The list can be any length
3) The list can be ranked, unranked or partially ranked, or grouped ranked followed as in the Favorite Director poll
- Unranked: All directors get the same number of points.
- Partially ranked: Top X is ranked, rest is unranked
- Group ranked: You have to specify the groups that go together, all films in the group get the same number of points. (eg: 11-20, 21-30, 31-50, 51-100)

For those who do not have an IMDb account:
You may ask someone with an IMDb account to create a list link, or once you have a final list set up, let me know (by PM or in a post) the list IMDb links of the performers in the order you want to list, and I will set up a list for you. Once I PM you a link to the IMDb list, you can't make the change. So, wait til you are sure of the list. You would have to post the IMDb list link if I create the list for you.

SCORING: Following the ordinary half life methodology. I haven't decide on the half life, depends on the length of most list.

DEADLINE: I set this tentatively for Sunday July 31. The actual deadline mostly likely will go beyond that day.
EDIT: New deadline is Sunday August 14

My Ranked Top 250

Similar to my director lists, I used a formula to calculate the ranking based on my average rating of the movies and (mini-)series they played in and are credited for on Critiker.com. So cameo roles and other small parts are filtered out since Critiker has a limit of 12 performers per title. It was also the easiest source to collect all performers of whom I've seen the minimum required titles.

In my calculations I made a distinction between female and male actors to compensate for the fewer opportunities for and shorter careers of most actresses, especially in the past. The minimum required titles I have seen for actors was 10 and actresses was 8. Also the averages and standard deviations used in the formula are calculated separately. In total 1934 performers qualified of which 63.72% is male. In my top 250 63.2% is male.

Using this method resulted in a list that includes many performers I would never have thought of to include and quite balanced in terms of Hollywood vs the rest of the world and old vs new. However, the top of the list is heavily tipped in favor of Bergman, Ozu and Kurosawa regulars.

I've thought about this, but it's very hard to make a list, and i think i'm going to pass for this one because simply it is hard to rank actors/actresses, there will always be some kind of bias towards American performers, performers in the 21st century and male performers (simply because i've seen less films by famous actresses because they seem to be in less films and it's hard to go for equal representation), as well as difficulties in balancing between films i like and films i like less, and also in major roles and minor roles.

I'm bad with actors/actresses and I'm not in the mood to do this anyway, for some 10 years now, but the thing is, I would be even unsure how. Going just by "guys I like from the top off my head" would be nonsense. How else would I lay foundations for a top list? How are others doing this?
Sure, I could browse some top lists of greatest performers online. There would be tons and tons of classic Hollywood actors (they like them b/w and DEAD). Those wouldn't be my personal favorites.
I could use sites like Criticker - or Letterboxd Premium, if I had that - and search for performers I've seen the most films with. That's one way to work with, although the top names would include a shit ton of current Hollywood mainstream names that are just there, lol.

What's the best way to do this as a first-timer?
(Don't bother tooo much with hints to provide help, it's more a tool for discussion. I most likely won't put up a list soon enough, sorry.)

I guess this is hard for a lot of people, or a lot of people just aren't interested, as the turnout seems pretty weak to me.

Speaking for myself, I think about actors in two basic categories -

1) which actors have given GREAT performances, or even multiple great performances?
2) which actors do I like seeing on screen? Personality, presence... that indefinable star quality?

Some people fit into both categories, and those I've ranked highest fit very strongly in one and reasonably well in the other, if not equally in both. I have lots of tough-guy actors on my list - Scott, Wayne, Bronson, Marvin, etc. All of these guys have given at least one or two really good performances, but that's not the main reason they're on the list; and conversely Meryl Streep and Daniel Day-Lewis aren't there primarily for their screen presence. Balancing the two is difficult but I guess I've cared enough about acting and followed enough actors for long enough that I can do it with a few of them at least.

As to where to start, I dunno - I started making a list maybe 10 years ago, never got very far on it, but did put a little bit into it when this poll was first announced, so by a month ago I had a fair bit of the work done. I suppose I just start mentally by asking myself questions like, whose filmographies would I like to complete? Who do I return to most often? Whose unseen films most interest me? Etc, etc. That gives me a decent list but filling in the character actors and supporting parts took a while. One helpful thing that worked for me personally was to look at some of my favorite films with big casts and just sort of go down the list. It's a Wonderful Life for example has 8 people that made my list and 2-3 more that are contenders. And with living actors it's even easier in some ways - which names make you think, oh I can't wait for that?

But I think ultimately you have to pay attention to actors to want to put in any effort into making this list; a lot of people here don't, which is too bad IMO but them's the breaks. This ain't the old IMDb classics board.

I wasn't originally planning to submit a list for this poll. Whenever somebody finds out that I am into cinema and acts who my favourite actor or actress is, I stumble. I don't have a definitive answer. There were a few names that I floated around back in the day, but it's a terribly hard to thing to really judge.
