Year-by-Year Polls: Looking back at 2021 (***Closed***)

#1

Post by Rufus-T »

Let me get this started.

Welcome to the Year-by-Year Poll looking back at 2021. It is time again to celebrate the movies from the previous year.

The Rules

The rule is slightly different from our usual poll. In addition to poll the films, we will include polls for the 4 acting categories (leading actor, leading actress, supporting actor, and supporting actress).

The eligible films are the following:

1) Feature films, documentaries, short films, TV movies and TV mini-series, but not continuing TV series or individual TV episodes.

2) Listed as 2021 according to IMDb

3) Listed according to IMDb prior to 2021 if the film released in 2021 in your country. These usually are 2020 films and sometimes 2019 films. If earlier than 2019 and I do not notice any 2021 release at any country, I may disqualify it unless you can justify the inclusion in your ballot. Some prefer to list only films that listed as 2021 on IMDb. That is fine too. Great thing about these polls are that they are accumulation of different opinion and taste within the rules.

4) To avoid duplicate entries in the higher ranking, any films that you listed in last year's poll would not be allowed to be listed again.

You may list up to 20 films for the film poll, no minimum number.

You may list up to 10 performances for each of the 4 acting categories. If you are not sure whether a performance is a leading or a supporting role, put it in the category you deem most fit. The split will consolidated later to the category with the most points follow by number of mentions and by higher ranked.

If you have an actor or actress in multiple films in your list, please list their performances for the different films at different slots since they are different performances.

Your ballot can be either ranked or unranked, but I will assume it's ranked unless otherwise stated. For ranked ballots it makes it easier if you use a numbered list.

Regarding IMDb links, since there may be many revision for some and that the poll includes the performance categories, I relax on this rule so you do not need to include the IMDb links as usual. You may if you want to, and does help me if you do. However, if the film you listed has another film with the same name, please distinguish it by including the director or a link or some other way. Otherwise, I will choose the one with the most IMDb votes.

The Scoring

For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. So the top title on a list of 20 films will receive 20 points, the next 19 points and so on. If the list has only 10 films, the top title will receive 10 points, the next one 9, and so on. If there are 5 films on the list, the top film will receive 5 points, the next one 4, well you get the idea.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot if it had been ranked. If there are 20 films on the ballot, this means each one would receive 10.5 points.

The scoring for the performances is the same as films except that the scoring is for lists up to 10 slots.

You may update your ballot at any time before the poll closes.

Don't worry too much if you have not seen enough films. You are still welcome to participate. The result turned out to be quite decent every year with enough participation. The poll may help you keep up to date the recent films. It helped me every year.

After this poll, we will return to our regular Year-by-Year poll with 1962, followed by 1971.

Thank you and happy listing, and let's generate another awesome year-end list!

July Challenge: none
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

For obvious reasons, the amount of films and genres/styles/countries/etc that we got last year was much more plentiful than the year before - a longer list of possibilities and honorable mentions for this year, and I managed to see 18 of my final top 20 for the year in theaters. In terms of quality, I can't yet say if this year was better or worse than 2020 on the whole, but like that year, the top half dozen or so from my final list really exemplify the strongest aspects of what current cinema has to offer, at least from my perspective.

Ugh, I'm debating voting for Worst Person in the World, but I really like to be strict in voting only for films that were available in my country that year and not follow IMDB years too strictly since it causes films from the previous year with later release dates to be neglected.

I already resent The Father doing so well in the 2020 poll even though literally no one saw it in 2020 except festival-goers and Spaniards :folded:

Yeah, it's an unsolvable problem. Similar for Nomadland, which had no regular theatrical release in any country 2020. But we long agreed on both of them as 2020 films, can't vote for the respective top films in the following year ..
At least it evens out 3 years after or so. Then it's 100% the IMDb date, period. B)

Yeah I am definitely in favor of eventually re-running these polls a few years after the fact, with the strict IMDB rule in place.

This is assuming that we trust IMDb - which currently lists Oskar Fischinger's 1926 short Spirals and Jordan Belson's 1952 Mandala as 2021 films, and which continues to list Betty Boop cartoons made well before TV existed as TV shows, and lumps music videos in with feature films now.
It was the truth, vivid and monstrous, that all the while he had waited the wait was itself his portion..

Weell, these really are exceptions. And we're not that negligent plus the hosts do a great job and will decide if something's too fishy. But how often did that happen (for the final results), when you think about it.

The problem seems to me to be getting worse though - I see more and more oddities, errors, just plain wrong shit, and I wonder if anybody in charge there gives a shit. Not that I have a solution, just venting I guess.

Hosts generally do a good job, yeah, but people do have tendencies to think of IMDb as gospel sometimes - "Oh this film is listed as French therefore I'll put it on my French list", that kind of thing. A lot of people don't really put much thought into it and sometimes things do get past hosts. Not a big problem in the grand scheme of things, just irritating. And not really solvable because not everybody thinks the way I do

yeah but isn't that why this poll is in June the following year, to give time to catch up on things that might have been released in the intervening six months?

I just want to mention that I really appreciate that this poll now happens in the middle of the year rather than the beginning of the year. It's immensely helpful in terms of giving me time to see movies from the previous year. And having a "New Releases" challenge before this poll also helped a lot. I hope we can continue doing that next year.

Out of 32 movies and three miniseries:

1. Pig
2. Passing
3. Nightmare Alley
4. 7 Prisoners
5. Prayers for the Stolen
6. The Power of the Dog
7. The North Water
8. The Last Duel
9. The Card Counter
10. Licorice Pizza
Spoiler
The Worst: The Matrix Resurrections

I'm sticking to the correct submission of year-of-production aka official first release, the way it SHOULD be (most people's i.e. 2015's lists will look laughable nowadays, since we're long past the "when will this film be released in my country" meager concern) / be as it may, I've also added IMDb links for op's convenience and I'm extremely shocked that West Shallow Story is (thus far) in more lists than Drive My Car or Petite Maman (I'm not even going to mention about those other, piss-poor remakes, all three of them Best Picture-nominated
Great year, as usual with almost all cinematic years (obviously, I'm against any demanding individual, and it seems there are many across this overpopulated globe :P ), I'm planning to edit possible alterations in the lists below, in case I watch a few more favorites, films and performances alike:

Exciting to see this finally happening. I will add my top 20 first, and then consider the other categories later.

I have already seen my 30+ most anticipated films of the year, so there are no films I'm very frustrated I have not gotten to see because I know/assume they are a likely contender for the top spots, however, many of my yearly favourites are complete surprises, such as Gritt, The Crossing, Playground and Taming the Garden from my top 10, all of which were quite far down my watchlist.

The top films I hope become available to me before the deadline are Vortex, After Blue, Fabian Going to the Dogs and Earwig.

My top 20:

1. Babardeala cu bucluc sau porno balamuc / Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (2021, Radu Jude)
2. Gritt (2021, Itonje Søimer Guttormsen)
3. Okul tirasi / Brother's Keeper (2021, Ferit Karahan)
4. Petite maman (2021, Céline Sciamma)
5. La traversée / The Crossing (2021, Florence Miailhe)
6. Rien à foutre / Zero Fucks Given (2021, Emmanuel Marre, Julie Lecoustre)
7. De uskyldige / The Innocents (2021, Eskil Vogt)
8. Un monde / Playground (2021, Laura Wandel)
9. Red Rocket (2021, Sean Baker)
10. Taming the Garden (2021, Salomé Jashi)

11. Gûzen to sôzô / Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (2021, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi)
12. Piccolo corpo (2021, Laura Samani)
13. Nitram (2021, Justin Kurzel)
14. Verdens verste menneske / The Worst Person in the World (2021, Joachim Trier)
15. Wildhood (2021, Bretten Hannam)
16. Futura (2021, Pietro Marcello, Francesco Munzi, Alice Rohrwacher)
17. Licorice Pizza (2021, Paul Thomas Anderson)
18. Große Freiheit (2021, Sebastian Meise)
19. Das Mädchen und die Spinne / The Girl and the Spider (2021, Ramon Zürcher, Silvan Zürcher)
20. The Power of the Dog (2021, Jane Campion)

In the past few weeks I have been catching up with 2021 releases and my list has changed somewhat significantly. There's a chance there might be further changes prior to the nomination deadline depending on how fruitful my viewings are over the coming weeks, and if that happens I will come back and edit it. For now here is my top 20 out of 147 films classed as 2021 on IMDB. My top four are favourites that I rated 8/10 and the rest are all a strong 7/10:

1. Dune
2. Last Night In Soho
3. Help
4. Old Henry

5. Red Rocket
6. Forgiveness
7. Two Witches
8. The Sadness
9. Parallel Mothers
10. The Last Duel
11. Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy
12. Pig
13. Beyond The Infinite Two Minutes
14. Malignant
15. Licorice Pizza
16. Ultrasound
17. The Card Counter
18. The Beta Test
19. On The Count of Three
20. tick, tick...BOOM!

Honorable Mentions:

Boiling Point
A Hero
Spencer
No Man of God
Absolute Denial
Midnight
Mad God
Lapwing
See For Me
Lamb

Looking forward to seeing the results!

It's immensely helpful in terms of giving me time to see movies from the previous year. And having a "New Releases" challenge before this poll also helped a lot. I hope we can continue doing that next year.
I am glad you are happy with the delayed start of the year end poll. I can safely say that this group in general, unlike the old CFB, does not follow up with the newly released films as much, giving that many rather follow the IMDb year. If I do the year-end poll again next year, most likely it will take place somewhere around 2nd quarter of the year. The only catch is if a film from previous year released in the early in the current year, it will be counted. For example, I held off placing A Quiet Place, Part II last year to be included in this year since it was released almost mid last year. It is up to the participants.

Again I like to emphasize that this is not an official 2021 list which may take place in 10 years for those around, but a snapshot of a 2021 year-end list. Anyone like to set up the list any way is fine. There is no wrong as long we just follow the rules. We just like to produce a decent reference list of recent films.
