ICM Forum's Favorite Contemporary Black&White Movies
 Results

Image

Although almost since the birth of film there have been various color(ized ) movies for the first few decades black and white* was the dominant use. After the 1930s the use of color started to rise until it became the standard in the mid 60s. But even after that filmmakers still continued to make films in black & white, mostly for artistic reason. In this poll we chose our favorite contemporary black and white (b&w) movies.
*Yes smarty pants among us ;), black and white are also colors but for convenience sake in common language there is a distinction between color and black & white movies

B&W movies are movies that are primarily shot in b&w; a movie that has a little intro and/or outro in color but for most part is in b&w should count, in contrary one flashback in b&w doesn't a b&w movie make. There weren't exact rules for what primarily entails, this was up to each voters own judgement. In discussions before the general division between "normal/old" and contemporary b&w movies was set around 1968, because around that time color really became the standard world-wide. There wasn't a strict cut-off year either, but this was also up to the voters discretion. To sum up contemporary black and white movies are primarily shot in b&w and made after +/- 1968.

Please feel free to discuss the list, the films, and any entries that you're happy (or unhappy) about, whether you submitted a list or not, but please try to be courteous when doing so. Due to the nature of the list there are many people who dislike entries, so just saying you dislike a movie or don't understand other people voting for it doesn't really add anything meaningful. Contrary it could be nice to hear from people who didn't vote for a movie but still liked it anyhow. When quoting a post with images it's best if you remove the image unless it's directly relevant to what you're posting.

I mean, I guess it doesn't hurt that much if you pause the countdown midway through to reveal everybody's #1 that didn't make the cut, but it is far preferable to have this info at the start of the countdown in my opinion.

Also, pretty disappointed that we are only getting a mere top 100 out of this. I appreciate the effort it takes into compiling all this, but between our #1s not being highlighted and the very short list, this is a bit of an underwhelming start I'm sorry to say. :(

Thanks. I am glad to see that my #1 would have made the top 150 if we were adventurous enough to expand the list. It's one of those films you can't help but love if you are a fan of silent comedies - which I realise many users here aren't, but still.

Re: Laki's #1, it's a great film, and I supported it, but I wonder if the purists left it off their list because it's around 10% colour / 90% b&w.

Re: Caracortada's #1, I'd love to know if that's a vote for the right version or an error.

It's on autopost, so didn't see your reply before just now. You're lucky I just checked if the posting was working correctly.

I do what I can with what's given to me. You had one of the longest lists, most lists were very short. Average list length was 49.5. Half of the lists were shorter than 40.

Yikes. That's really  to me. Would love to know if that's due to folks not having seen a lot of contemporary black and white films or simply not liking what they have seen. There is certainly no shortage of readily available films out there that meet the guidelines for this poll. Especially with the very flexible start date as many countries were still regularly filming in black and white in the late 60s, so tons of '69 and '68 stuff eligible.

Personally that some countries were still filming regularly in black and white in the late 60s is the reason why I didn't add movies from f.e. Japan from the 60s to my list.

La Commune definitely nailed the look of early cinema judging from that screenshot. I thought somehow participants got confused and submitted a film from the 1800s at first glance (and the subtitle didn’t help!)
