Country Poll: Germany [Deadline: May 30, 2022]

#1

Post by Fergenaprido »

Overview of the Project
Schedule

May 2022: Germany
(including West Germany & East Germany)

Rules
* You may vote for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 titles.
* Feature films, documentaries, shorts, made-for-tv movies, direct-to-video movies, TV mini-series, and TV episodes from anthology series are all eligible.
* One country per film - IMDB is used as a guideline, but Fergenaprido will be the final arbiter for uncertain cases.
* All ballots are considered ranked unless otherwise stated.
* You must include a list of bare imdb URLs along with your ballot (preferably within a spoiler tag), otherwise your ballot will be disqualified.

Scoring
For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive the number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each successive title receiving one point less.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means #1 has 20 points, #2 has 19 points, and #20 has 1 point; a list with 5 titles means #1 has 5 points, #2 has 4 points, and #5 has 1 point.

For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted it the ballot had been ranked.
I.e. A list with 20 titles means each title would receive 10.5 points; a list with 5 titles means each title would receive 3 points.

*due to imdb allowing films to be attributed to more than one country, many titles in this filter may be ineligible for this poll if Germany is not the primary country of production. Decisions about uncertain films will be listed in the second post of this thread.

Many thanks to Rufus-T & gromit82 for the framework from the Year by Year polls, and to maxwelldeux for the Excel template.

Participants:
Fully ranked lists of 20 titles unless otherwise indicated
Deadline: 11:59:59 p.m. May 30, 2022, UTC -10 (Hawaii Time)

ffs, Germany with all its funding. The results of this link are ridiculous. (Not blaming you, just IMDb's fault of not allowing us to separate into main/secondary attributes)

What about Das weiße Band?

Holy ..! They will not be making them like this anymore?

Yeah, I know. :( That's why I have that disclaimer with the asterisk.

I suppose I could also provide a link to a filter of films that are both German-funded AND feature the German language, if that would help. But, like countries, if German is spoken at all in the film, even just a few words, it will show up in the results (about 20,000 titles less, but still a lot of filler IMO). Not to mention Germany's been making more English-language films as of late, for some reason.

- - - - -

As for The White Ribbon, it seems to be an Austrian-German co-production, with different sources indicating which country should be first. Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia:
Michael Haneke has said the project was in development for more than ten years.[6] The initial version of the script was written as a television mini-series for the Austrian broadcaster ORF, but when no co-producer who was willing to invest in the project had been found after five years had passed, Haneke decided to put the project on hold.[7] Eventually revived as a feature film, the production was led by the Austrian company Wega Film. It was also co-produced by X Filme (Germany), Les Films Du Losange (France) and Lucky Red (Italy).[8] The film received financial support from the Austrian Film Institute, various local funds in Germany, the French CNC and the Council of Europe's film fund Eurimages.[9] It had a total budget of around 12 million Euro.[7]

- - -

With a fully German cast and setting, as well as co-production by a German company, it has been discussed whether the film should be regarded as an Austrian or German production. Haneke himself has expressed indifference on the question: "In the Olympic Games the medal doesn't go to the country, but to the athlete." The general feeling is that it is primarily a Michael Haneke film.[18]

- - -

The film was a nominee in the category Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards. Its submission as an entry of Germany rather than Austria was the source of some controversy,[34] since the Academy would have accepted it as a submission from either country. Martin Schweighofer, head of the Austrian Film Commission, expressed misgivings about the decision: "The discomfort arises because of the vague rules of the Academy. In essential functions the film is Austrian." It has been reported that the American distributor, Sony Pictures Classics, pressured Germany to submit it rather than Austria because the Academy had nominated Austrian films two years running and three in a row was considered unlikely.[35]
So it seems it's primarily an Austrian production based on that, with German (and other) funding coming later, even though the story is set and filmed in Germany itself. IMDB has X Filme and Germany listed first, but that could just be an error by whoever added the info. I'll check my copy of the film later and see what information I can find in the onscreen credits, but for now I'm leaning toward this being an Austrian film, and thus ineligible.

I know the film was nominated for and won a slew of Lolas (German Film Awards), but it's also likely the same would have happened at the Austrian Film Awards had they existed at the time (the Austrian Film Academy was created in 2009, the same year the film was released, and had their first ceremony in 2011 for films from 2010).
Edit: The film did win a bunch of Romy Awards, which are run by the Austrian newspaper Kurier, and I think might be analogous to critics awards in other countries.

And for once I'll get my nominations in early, though there are still plenty of German classics I have yet to see, and I plan to fit in at least another half dozen before the deadline.

1. Sommersturm [Summer Storm] (2004)
2. M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder (1931)
3. Good Bye Lenin! (2003)
4. Das Boot [The Boat] (1981)
5. Das Leben der Anderen [The Lives of Others] (2006)
6. Der Untergang [Downfall] (2004)
7. Lola rennt [Run Lola Run] (1998)
8. Die Brücke [The Bridge] (1959)
9. Sonnenallee [Sun Alley] (1999)
10. Spielzeugland [Toyland] (2007)
11. Das Rad [Rocks] (2003)
12. Schwarzfahrer [Black Rider] (1993)
13. Viktor und Viktoria [Victor and Victoria] (1933)
14. Spur der Steine [Trace of Stones] (1966)
15. Unter den Brücken [Under the Bridges] (1946)
16. Ich war neunzehn [ I Was Nineteen] (1968)
17. Der junge Törless [Young Törless] (1966)
18. Rivers and Tides (2001)
19. Freier Fall [Free Fall] (2013)
20. Die Bergkatze [The Wildcat] (1921)

Runners-up in case of any disqualifications
21. Ich und Kaminski [Me and Kaminski] (2015)
22. Heaven (2002)
23. Faustrecht der Freiheit [Fox and His Friends] (1975)
Spoiler
Normally, my favourites from a country are pretty clustered in a few decades, but Germany's one of the few where they're fairly evenly spread out, with at least one film from each decade showing up except the 1910s (and 1970s only in the runners-up, but the 1970s in general are a weak decade for me).

Clear case for this early Haneke flick, it doesn't even have Germany listed anywhere.

Okay, you took Mozart away from us... but Das Weiße Band is a german film.
Beside it is a german story with german actors/actresses filmed in east germany - the german company X-Filme carrired over fifty percent of the budget and it was the german oscar-contender for "best foreign film". Totaly acceptable that all the other Haneke films are austrian (or french)... but not this one :folded:

Gordon_Gekko wrote: May 6th, 2022, 6:43 am Okay, you took Mozart away from us... but Das Weiße Band is a german film.
Beside it is a german story with german actors/actresses filmed in east germany - the german company X-Filme carrired over fifty percent of the budget and it was the german oscar-contender for "best foreign film". Totaly acceptable that all the other Haneke films are austrian (or french)... but not this one :folded:
I'm with this, by the way, and am going to nominate Das weiße Band with an asterisk * or something (runners-up for replacement included, in case Ferg can't be convinced).
The Oscar nomination for Germany is a really strong argument imo.

some cool little cult selections there!
you might like Die 120 Tage von Bottrop (1997) which has a great underground feeling to it
(or, something totally different, Traumstadt (1973), Germany has a lot to offer in that way)

from my own list there are also a few that take arthouse into transgressive places
9 - Der goldene Handschuh - 2019 - 4,5
15 - Die Berührte - 1981 - 4,5
20 - Der freie Wille - 2006 - 4,5
But your selections made me think more of Schlingensief (and the underground scene of Berlin in the 80's... but I don't have much to reccomend there, maybe Fräulein Berlin (1984) but it seems I am the only checker and that is hard to find...)

Thanks, Beavis! I had some of those films you recd on my watch list, but I added the rest. I've also been looking for Frontstadt 1983 for awhile now... that one has been elusive. I think that might exemplify the early 80s Berlin scene as well.

"München" - Unfortunately not, no.
'Passion' and seemingly Reble's entire life's work can be watched in great quality on his website (it says "preview" but it's the complete film).

'Acht Stunden sind kein Tag' was on my work-in-progress list, but got the boot to make room for films from lesser known filmmakers. It definitely would have been my RWF film (or mini-series) of choice, so it's nice to see it getting some mentions
'Seelische Konstruktionen' is my favorite Fischinger, too.
I take it "Ketamin" isn't online?

Ketamin played at the Oberhausen film festival in 2009 and then in a travelling programme of highlights from that festival that somehow ended up at my local cinema. That's how I saw it and so I don't know a good way to see it now.

Have a few eligibility questions:

Germania anno zero https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039417/
Kameradschaft https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0022017/
Autumn Sonata https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077711/
And Roland already asked about Die Marquise von O...

Wow, not for a second would I have considered Höstsonaten ..
English Wikipedia says: "Due to his battle with the Swedish tax authorities at the time,[n 1] Ingmar Bergman produced Autumn Sonata through his West German company, Personafilm GmbH, with main financing from Lew Grade's British ITC Film, and shot the film in an old film studio outside Oslo in Norway.[2] Although formally a German production (with the German title, Herbstsonate, being the official original title), the dialogue is in Swedish, most of the crew and actors were Swedish,[3] and the world premiere was in Stockholm.[4]"
I hope that's enough to rule it out :geek:

Yeah, me either, until it came back on the IMDB West Germany search. Then I looked it up, and Sweden's not even listed in Countries, only: West Germany | United Kingdom! (For reasons you elaborate above.)
